POSITRACTION: Blind high school runner

http://www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-plaschke22-2009feb22,0,907227,full.column

From the Los Angeles Times
Blind high school runner, and her team, are a sight to behold
Simi Valley Royal High senior Alyssa Rossi, blind since birth, is able to compete thanks to the help and sacrifices of teammates.
Bill Plaschke

*** begin quote ***

In Simi Valley, across a grassy field in the lengthening shadow of nearby hills, they ran together.

Two girls, side by side, stride for stride, connected by the stretched cotton of a gray belt and the giant arms of innocence.

One girl is blind.

The other girl is teaching the rest of us to see.

One girl, Alyssa Rossi, born without vision, is the newest senior runner on the Royal High track team.

The other girl, Nicole Todd, is the sophomore teammate making this possible.

Rossi runs a mile, Todd runs with her, gently guiding her with the gray belt that is connected to a thicker black belt around Rossi’s waist.

When Rossi slows, Todd forsakes her own training schedule and slows.

When Rossi speeds up, Todd runs even faster to watch for bumps and curves.

When Rossi grows breathless and has to stop, Todd stops too, even if the sophomore could use more work.

“At first I wondered if this was the best thing for me,” Todd said. “Then I realized, this is not about me.”

She smiled, and you want to wrap the sports world in this smile, one born of the basic instincts of teamwork, one that glitters with the very best of sport.

JEmail: Toner, Mike (MC1972) disagrees with my endnote

Re: JASPER JOTTINGS Week 15 - 2009 April 12 ENDNOTE

*** begin quote ***

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) — Pennsylvania Sen. Bob Casey, considered by some to be one of the few pro-life Democrats in Congress, is defending his repeated votes for international abortion funding.

{Extraneous Deleted}

Or pretend to be deciding for people in other countries. It’s “genocide on the quiet”!

*** end quote ***

Dear John,

I believe the vote was a good one. However, I believe that people of good will can debate that point ON ITS MERITS and not by simply demonizing it as a vote to fund abortions - which it definitely was not. The vote allowed funding to go to organizations which offer abortion counseling among other services. Now you can certainly argue that this allows other money to be used for abortions etc - but you can’t make it sound like the vote was - up or down - shall we use taxpayer money to fund abortions in other countries. As our great Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan pointed out - everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own set of facts…

Thanks, as always for your much appreciated JJ work…

[JR: I took the liberty of pruning the endnote. And, I appreciate the response. Gets lonely here in the "VIRTUAL JASPER JOTTINGS NEWSROOM". That being said, I think we disagree. First, as a little L libertarian, I have to object to my money being used to fund anything overseas. Second, one can not segment services offered saying a little genocide is OK. Third, since the D's are now back in control, we are going to have more of the "sacrament of abortion", we have to start fighting now on every "trivial" vote. On the merits, funding overseas imperialism even if it's supposed to be charity and any taint of immorality poisons the whole "pool". Philosophically, even if Casey wants to donate his OWN money to such a charity it calls into question his "catholic" credentials. (That's the thrust of the endnote.) Voting to use MY money does even more, imho. That's the facts. The vote WAS to use my taxes to offer abortions overseas. I find it reprehensible on so many levels, it makes me sputter. As you can tell. We'll
have to agree to disagree agreeably on this one.]

Howard Rose

Howard Rose, of Northumberland Avenue, is a 29-year township resident. He is the owner of Brier Rose Books on Cedar Lane and for more than 25 years was an administrator at Fairleigh Dickinson University, Cardozo School of Law and other academic institutions. He has a bachelor’s degree from City College and a master’s in counseling from Manhattan College. Rose serves on the planning board and the financial advisory board and is a member of the board of directors of Teaneck Comes Together. Both of his children attended the district schools, K-12.

Rose believes that his background in academic administration, which includes fiscal management, will be an asset to the board.

He favors curriculum reform but prefers to build on existing programs rather than fashion new ones.

“Instead of trying to re-invent the wheel, we should be greasing the axle of the wheel we have already in order to facilitate student instruction,” he said.

The ACT Initiative is a step in the right direction, Rose said, but he seeks greater accountability, noting that for several years the board has informed residents that the results are not yet available. “Change unmeasured is change unconfirmed,” he notes.

Rose also seeks to improve communications between the district and parents. “We need to spark a sustained dialog by ongoing programs that teach parents the educational skills to engage their children.”

Ex-Grumman test pilot, executive Thomas Kane Jr. dies
BY REID J. EPSTEIN | reid.epstein@newsday.com
    10:23 PM EDT, April 12, 2009

*** begin quote ***

Tom Kane traveled around the world on Navy ships and selling military aircraft for Grumman Corp., but he was always a Long Islander at heart. Kane, 75, died Saturday after a brief battle with lung cancer at Christa House in West Babylon.

Born Aug. 13, 1933, in Hempstead, Thomas Joseph Kane Jr. graduated from Hempstead High School and briefly attended Manhattan College in the Bronx before moving to Bay Shore and starting work at his father’s import-export company on Wall Street.

While commuting to work on the 7:33 a.m. Long Island Rail Road train from Babylon, Kane met Jane McGinnis, who took the train to an uptown ad agency.

On Oct. 20, 1956, they married.

“That’s how we got to know each other, on the train,” Jane Kane said Sunday.

“We figured out that we were the same background, both Irish, and had the same interests. It just was meant to be.”

After the wedding in Babylon, Tom and Jane Kane drove his Buick from Long Island to Southern California, where for three years he served at Navy bases and aboard the USS Princeton, from which he flew Navy fighter jets.

Attorney James Kosch of Allendale, a partner in LeClairRyan of Newark, was a young lawyer at McCarter English in Newark about 25 years ago when a senior member of that firm decided someone ought to “learn this environmental stuff.” Kosch was the youngest guy at the table, and the senior member pointed to him and said, “You!”

Since then he’s developed a specialty for cases related to environmental issues, including toxic-tort defense, “green” construction, alternative energy and nanotechnology.

Last year he joined the Newark office of national law firm LeClairRyan. It wasn’t the first time his path crossed that of LeClairRyan founder Gary LeClair. They had faced each other on the football field in high school, when LeClair played for Northern Valley-Old Tappan and Kosch played for Hawthorne.

Kosch, 53, has been involved in numerous community organizations in Bergen County, including serving as president of the Allendale Recreation Commission and vice president of the board of trustees of the John Harms Center for the Arts.

He spoke with The Record recently about his football connection, issues in environmental law, and his all-time favorite lawyer movies. (Interview edited and condensed for space.)

NORWICH – A few years after we graduated from college, one of my best friends went to Brooklyn Law. He used to call me late at night when he finished studying. (As I was two time zones away in Colorado, I think I was probably the only person he knew who was up as late with the exception of his classmates.) Every time we talked, he’d tell me that he thought I should go to law school, too. I’d laugh at him and tell him he was out of his mind. But secretly, the idea appealed to me. I just didn’t want to admit it.

As it turned out, it wasn’t John (who is now, incidentally, an assistant district attorney in the Bronx) who finally gave me a sneak peek at what it’s like to be a lawyer. That dubious honor went to another Manhattan College grad: Michael Ferrarese of Lee, Emerson and Ferrarese in Norwich.

From time to time I get appreciative feedback. As part of the process, I get told when the GuestBook is being taken down. I usually take a quick look just to see and say a quick prayer. Today, found a pearl.]

Fellow Alum, St. Margaret’s of Riverdale, Manhattan Prep, Manhattan College: Have not seen Joe since our infamous summer of ‘53. During spring break, 4 of us…Joe, Paul Higgins, Tom Walsh & myself travelled to Spring Lake, NJ to scout job opportunities for the summer. Returning home to Riverdale empty handed, we met again one Fri. in early June to try our luck @ jobs in Cape Cod. Joe negotiated the purchase of a ‘32 Ford convertible, w/a rumble seat, for $50 (partnership) & we left the next morning for the Cape. Unsuccessful at finding jobs commensurate w/our experience & talents, we returned to Riverdale & immediately headed for another try at Spring Lake. Joe landed a waiters job @ the Warren Hotel, Paul as a bartender @ the “Sandpiper” in Sea Girt & T. Walsh & I as lifeguards on the beach. It was a grand & glorious summer, which is burned indelibly & favorably in my memory bank. Joe’s roots were deep in Riverdale & is now assured safe passage when welcomed by Mick O’Hagan at the Pearly Gates.

Comment on MObit: Taylor, Mark [MCfac]

By MaryAnn McCarra-Fitzpatrick

My sincere condolences to Dr. Mark Taylor’s wife Anya, his sons, and his entire family.

I had communicated with him only recently so I am shocked and saddened at this news.

Does anyone know where he will be waked or where flowers/donations in his name may be sent?

I will remember him, and his brilliant words, forever.

MaryAnn McCarra-Fitzpatrick

Could St. Louis lose its Catholic hospitals under new federal abortion legislation?
By Tim Townsend
ST. LOUIS POST-DISPATCH

*** begin quote ***

A proposed bill promising major changes in the U.S. abortion landscape has Roman Catholic bishops threatening to close Catholic hospitals if the Democratic Congress and White House make it law.

The Freedom of Choice Act failed to get out of subcommittee in 2004, but its sponsor is poised to refile it now that former Senate co-sponsor Barack Obama occupies the Oval Office.

A spokesman for Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., said the legislation “is among the congressman’s priorities. We expect to reintroduce it sooner rather than later.”

FOCA, as the bill is known, would make federal law out of the abortion protections established in 1973 by the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe vs. Wade ruling.

The legislation has some Roman Catholic bishops threatening to shutter the country’s 624 Catholic hospitals — including 11 in the Archdiocese of St. Louis — rather than comply.

Speaking in Baltimore in November at the bishops’ fall meeting, Bishop Thomas Paprocki, a Chicago auxiliary bishop, took up the issue of what to do with Catholic hospitals if FOCA became law. “It would not be sufficient to withdraw our sponsorship or to sell them to someone who would perform abortions,” he said. “That would be a morally unacceptable cooperation in evil.”

But even within the Catholic community, there is disagreement about the effects FOCA might have on hospitals, with some health care professionals and bishops saying a strategy of ignoring the law, if it passes, would be more effective than closing hospitals.

[JR: When will the Church protect the modern day serfs. Not with “social justice”, that’s for sure.]

[JR: Sorry, but war is war. At some point in time, the “moral majority” has to put a stake in the ground. Didn’t do it with education. Didn’t do it with sex abuse. Didn’t do it with taxation. Didn’t do it with abortion. Didn’t do it with CINO politicians and communion. When do they fight the “tyranny of the King”? (Wrong century!) We need Holy Mother Church as an ally to us serfs!]
