POSITRACTION: WHAT CAN ONE PERSON DO?
http://www.sharingandcaringhands.org/history.htm
*** begin quote ***
Sharing and Caring Hands was founded in 1985 by Mary Jo Copeland of
Minneapolis. Before 1985 Mary Jo had been a regular volunteer with an
organization that help the poor. She was an innovator in this work,
especially in the area of organizing outside volunteers to help. In
spite of her best efforts, however, Mary had been often been frustrated
with the bureaucratic nature of the organizations and she saw many who
needed help slipping through the cracks. In 1985 she was recognized for
her volunteer service by local TV station KARE as one of their
“Eleven who Care.”
With a $2,200 stipend that came with the award she was determined to
begin her own outreach to the homeless and the poorest of the poor. Her
plan was to provide services through volunteers, to give local churches
and organizations an opportunity to serve. To provide charity with a
human face, with true compassion.

Hot stuff! No gooferment involvement at all. Seeing a person like this just makes me sit in awe of the woman.
Not everyone can be a “Mother Teresa”. But we can be
“assistants”. Here’s a “Let The Moth Out”
candidate!

Rockland Scholar-Athlete: North Rockland’s Diana Lorentz

Ask people who know North Rockland’s Diana Lorentz and
they’ll probably tell you she takes a real modest approach and
doesn’t like to say much about herself. But for someone
who’s played varsity tennis since eighth grade and has gone 62-0
in league play, what else needs to be said?
*** and ***
Lorentz, who has a 95 academic average, will continue playing tennis at
Manhattan College, having recently signed her National Letter of
Intent. Even though she has high hopes about playing in the pro circuit
one day, she just wants to concentrate on her next four years for now.
“I see myself playing some pro tournaments as I get older,”
Lorentz said. “But I’m just going to focus on Division I
tennis and see what happens.”
The Journal News Rockland Scholar-Athlete of the Week program honors
students for their academic, athletic and community achievements. Each
week a winner is selected from the nominees submitted by athletic
directors. Only seniors can be nominated and the award can be won only
once.

JEmail: Breen, Jerry (MC1971) cites Steve O’Hagan’s recent death from lung cancer
From: Breen, Jerry (MC1971)
Date: November 16, 2008 6:52:35 PM EST
To: John Reinke
Subject: new project from Jerry Breen

John: Here’s the cover art for a new project I’m working
on. It’s a book called “Dreams from My Sa-Mekh”.
Basically, it’s a parody of Barack Obama’s memoir
“Dreams from My Father”, except that it’s written by
a half-Vulcan/half-human Starfleet officer (like Spock).
“Sa-Mekh” is the Vulcan word for “father”. Just
like Obama, Spock was always somewhat conflicted about his mixed
ancestry. So there’s a lot of potential for humor there. If any
members of Star Trek Nation (or anyone else) would like to keep up with
the latest developments as we go where no Jasper has gone before, they
can send their email address to me at N E W br ee n — at —
com cast dot net and I’ll send periodic updates straight to their
tricorder. Or just check out my website at www.newbreen.com for the
latest news. Yours in Jasper, Jerry Breen MC’71
P.S. On a serious note, I was saddened to hear of my old friend Steve
O’Hagan’s recent death from lung cancer. At Manhattan back
in the 60’s, Steve and I were both members of the
“B.V.D.”, the Brothers of Visual Drama (the film club).
Though we were few in number, we entertained and enlightened many by
showing an incredibly diverse selection of films, everything from
Michaelangelo Antonioni to Ingmar Bergman to Richard Lester, including
such hard-to-find films as Leni Riefenstahl’s notorious
documentary “Triumph of the Will”. Steve’s obituary
in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution mentioned his love of Irish culture
and his love of sailing, but Steve also had a great love and
appreciation for the art of film. Fortunately, I was able to reconnect
with Steve by phone earlier this year and we had a nice conversation. I
didn’t realize we’d lose him so soon. He was a truly nice
guy and a great Jasper. - FJB

Manhattan College Students Work To Establish Mentor Program At New Explorers High School In South Bronx
RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College students David Ellison
’09, Dinorah Pena ’10, Emily Murtaugh ’09 and Ayana
Rainford ’09 have started to make strides toward the creation of
a permanent mentor program at New Explorers High School.
The four communication majors will travel to the South Bronx high
school on Monday, Nov. 24, to speak with 60 juniors about the
importance of going to college, staying motivated and keeping a
positive attitude.
“As Manhattan College students and members of the Riverdale
community, we wanted to try and give back to children from the Bronx
neighborhoods who are about to undergo the same experiences that we
have; applying to college, preparing for and taking the SATs, and
choosing the best university to continue their education,” says
Ellison, who also serves as editor-in-chief of the College’s
student newspaper The Quadrangle.
The Manhattan students plan to talk about their personal struggles with
getting into college, common misconceptions about college and the
importance of perseverance. They will hold a workshop on how to fill
out applications and financial aid forms, and the difference between
high school and college life.
For more information about the program, please contact Ellison at (401) 230-5520 or {Extraneous Deleted}.

REMEMBERANCE: O’Gara, Br. Andrew [MC1967]
http://independent.gmnews.com/news/2008/1120/front_page/003.html
CBA recalls a ‘gregarious and thoughtful man’
Brother Andrew O’Gara, 80, led academy for 30 years
BY JAMIE ROMM Staff Writer
The man whom many credit with making Christian Brothers Academy what it is today, Brother Andrew O’Gara, died on Nov. 8.
According to people who knew him, he left his mark on every person who set foot on the CBA campus.
“I think for anyone who has graduated, Brother Andrew was
CBA,” CBA basketball coach Geoff Billet said. “He was one
of the first people you met freshman year and was the first to know
you, your name and your family. By November of each year he knew
everyone.”
Billet, a former student and star basketball player for the school,
came back to his alma mater 13 years after graduating to take over the
basketball program and work in the marketing department.
{Extraneous Deleted}
O’Gara became the first president of Christian Brothers Academy
in 1991, a position he held until his death. Prior to that appointment,
Brother Andrew had been principal of CBA since 1979.
Brother Andrew’s 30 years at CBA were a time of unprecedented
growth and major capital campaigns transformed the appearance of the
school, according to the school Web site.
{Extraneous Deleted}
In 1946, he received the habit of the Brothers of the Christian Schools
and the religious name Brother Andrew of Mary. After studies at
Catholic University and Manhattan College, Brother Andrew served as
teacher and administrator at La Salle Academy, New York City, and
Lincoln Hall Catholic Protectory for Boys.
{Extraneous Deleted}
Billet said that in a final tribute, O’Gara’s casket was carried throughout the building at CBA.
“To see all of the students lined up throughout the building
really was a tremendous send-off,” Billet said. “He spent
the last 30 years of his life here and it’s a strong dedication
to the man to have his body carried throughout the place he cared so
much about.”

JR, your closing comment about the real purpose of the Civil War being
to hang onto the southern taxable base. rather than the popular
misconception of being a war to end slavery, is once again right on the
Libertarian mark. That misconception is equivalent to the one about
Lincoln issuing the Emancipation Proclamation to end slavery, when his
real purpose was more targeted at being intended to end slavery in the
South, so that Southern slaves could not be used as soldiers against
the Yankees in the “War of Northern Agression.”
Unfortunately, the descendants of those former slaves are still being
enslaved by their so-called “leaders” and their own
political ignorance. Since the 1964 Civil Rights Act (which was put
through with the full support of Republicans and opposed by Senator
Albert Gore Sr. and the Democratic Dixicrats), fifty years of American
blacks voting as a taken-for-granted voting block for Democrats seems
to have not helped them much financially. Seems like you need to think
like a rich guy to become a rich guy, since the rich are the ones (not
the gooferment) that creates jobs and financial prosperity. The only
persons I ever saw get a job from poor people were “community
activists” who were paid to keep the “hoi ploi”
conned.

The email is referring to my response about a drive by comment. Here it is to refresh your memory.
[JR: Always nice to hear from someone who spells worse than I do. And
such a `literate" contribution to civil discourse. On, and no surprise,
it was a `drive by' comment (i.e., no return email address). Folks like
that don't want to have to defend or explain their words. I don't think
he does O any service this way. Flies and honey? And, I'm sorry to say
that Candidate O has some unexplained issues in his rather sparse
credentials (e.g., birth certificate; PhD thesis; medical records; tax
return). Not that facts matter to anyone. Certainly not to the liberal
media, who once again are the cheerleaders for the Liberal Candidate.
Any way, normally I'd just ignore this and move on. But, he did bring
up an interesting point about the Civil War. He thinks it was about
slavery. Silly person. The Civil War was about taxes plus empowering
and enriching the Northern elite. Slavery ended peacefully in the rest
of the world. And, slavery was going to end due to bad economics . But,
we can't have that discussion, because the commenter just drove by! We
wuz robbed of that opportunity to learn. Maybe next time.]

DId you have good seats ?? :-)
My old undergraduate college gets credit for that game … Where do
you think they got sneakers for a bunch of big guys to wear on a
Sunday then close to the field ??
In addition to me, Captain Video and Rudy Guiliani as alums … the
first Orange Bowl … the seventh inning stretch …

the Jaspers’ b-ball locker room for the sneakers. Had the
Giants’ equipment manager stayed on Manhattan Island and asked
Nat Holman at my CCNY for the sneakers, the equipment guy would have
been forced to stay for a lecture by one of our eight future Nobel
laureates. Sorry, but I was not at the Sneaker Game. I was a Brooklyn
Dodgers (football) fan at the time or was it the Staten Island
Stapletons? It was a long time ago. You know, just as the 1934 game was
the Sneaker Game because of a halftime adjustment, can’t we call
the 2007 SB the Banana Game because Pam Oliver told the viewers that
the Giants players were fed bananas during halftime to correct
electrolytic imbalances caused by the desert heat. I think the bananas
had just as much impact in 2007 as the sneakers did in 1934.

“There are over a billion Catholics in the world. If Catholics
decided to wear the color blue tomorrow, everyone would be
like…Blue is a cool color.” And that made me have this
crazy idea…. What if all of us Catholics actually did that? So I
decided in honor of our mother Mary, on December 8th, which is The
Feast of The Immaculate Conception, we will all wear the color light
blue. Please help me accomplish this goal! Invite all your Catholic

Mary…that’s cool too. Join us in this movment and be a

Career accomplishment I’m most proud of: Over the years,
I’ve been able to attract, develop, and retain talented people
and am proud of my Sterling Commerce team. In any economic climate, the
difference between A and B players is game-changing.
Most important career influencer: Jane Vaughan, senior VP of global
operations at SAP, pushed my critical thinking abilities and broadened
my perspective. I continue to grow as a result of the principles she
instilled in me. Jane is one of the most accomplished and brilliant
executives for whom I’ve had the privilege to work.
Decision I wish I could do over: I believe in thinking things through
before acting. I’ve been fortunate in my personal and
professional life not to have taken any significant missteps.
I’ve learned from those minor mistakes I did make. I take
calculated risks and always leverage and learn from the mistakes others
made before me.

Please pass this on.
