MFound: Quadrangle story gets another “leg”

http://collegemediamatters.com/2008/11/11/abstinence-sells/

Abstinence Sells
November 11, 2008 by Dan Reimold

*** begin quote ***

A chaste scoop has prompted major buzz around The Quadrangle student newspaper at Manhattan College. According to The New York Times, a recent front-page piece outlining the school president’s support for a student abstinence organization received three times the normal traffic on the paper’s Web site and briefly became the talk of the campus.

*** end quote ***

[JR: Amazing that it was picked up. I'd say it is not that "abstinence sells", but that folks are looking for reassurances that traditional values help steer a "safe course". Morality aside, for those who don't believe in such "tribal stories", the "abstinence ethic" prevents one from catching some very bad STDs. And, some of those bugs will kill you. Never mind all those "self worth" issues that girls, and boys, face from immoral behavior. Some might say my "wizdumb" is from not being able to find that "free love" of the Sixties. I'm sure if I was supposed to find it my Mom, and later my Wife, would have directed me to it. Abstinence is part of finding your soul mate, imho. Thirty Eight Wedded years later, I see this whole issue a lot differently. Time for folks to stand up for what's "right". I'll stop now. Any more and I'll have to move it to be an "editorial" endnote.]

Why I Love My Husband

*** begin quote ***

I woke up this morning and rolled out of bed—I couldn’t sleep. I gazed on that sleeping man next to me, and I started feeling all mushy and sentimental like. And I started mentally ticking off all the things about him that I love. So I thought I’d post it here, just so I could show my love for him. He deserves it for putting up with me.
Yeah, I’m feelin’ all mushy and sentimental today. It’s a nice feeling.

1. I love that when he is in bed and it’s too hot for him under the covers but he knows that I like to snuggle up to him and get nice and toasty warm that he just barely sneaks out of the blankets so that his back is exposed and keeps him nice and cool, while I still get to snuggle into him and keep nice and warm.

{Extraneous Deleted}

86. I love that when I mentioned to him today that I was going to make up this list, he said, “It’s about time you posted something about me” and then he gets pissed off when I do post something about him. That just cracks me up double.

Well, ok, I could go on and on, and maybe I’ll do some more later :-) But basically, marriage is made up of all the little things that add up to more and more years with Mr. Right. And all these little things and more add up to almost ten years now. Hard to believe, but I can hardly wait to see where the next ten take us.

Manhattan College Engineering Students Win Scholarships From Prestigious Industry Group

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College electrical engineering students Margery Hines ’09 and Robert Stigliano ’09 have been awarded scholarships from the Association of Old Crows (AOC), a nonprofit professional group that promotes careers in the defense industry.

Hines, from Staten Island, N.Y., and Stigliano, from Mineola, N.Y., were each awarded $3,000 toward tuition for the spring 2009 semester. This marks the 19th consecutive year that a Manhattan engineering student has won scholarships in this academic competition, which is open to all computer and electrical engineering students who are residents of New York City, Westchester, Nassau or Suffolk Counties. Only three scholarships were awarded in 2008.

A banquet to honor the winners will be held on Friday, Nov. 14 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, N.Y. Dating back to 1989, Manhattan engineering students have won more than $40,000 in scholarships from AOC in competition with some of the finest engineering schools in the metro area.

AOC is an international organization with more than 14,000 members and more than 100 corporate participants who are focused on the science and practice of electronic warfare and related disciplines.

*** begin quote ***

Well day 2 and all is well, he has been behaving well at night, but some sleep adjustment is required.

We took him to the pediatrician today for his first look over; he is 7lbs 4 ozs and if born today would be in the normal weight range. He is also 49.5 cms long or 19.5 inches, so all in all a good first doctor’s trip.

I couldn’t help myself and have added photos we have taken over the past few days, both leaving the hospital but also some of our wonderful James, so you get to see Fran and Erin etc. who we rave about so much (see the photo link below).

It was hard to say good bye as they have been our constant friends and guides during the past 16 weeks. I have already put myself down to go back to the NICU Dad’s nights next spring once James is ok, if anything I learned that I can pass on and help anyone else who go through the same ordeal or sad to say worse, I will gladly do so.

We must also thank you as well for the constant friends you have all been as well to us during this journey. Your kind words of encouragement and gifts we dearly dearly appreciate.

Father Chris: your parish ladies’ fine knitting is proudly used by James nightly (see the
photos link below )

Thank you all, so very much and we will update the blog as we said as time goes on.

Ok back to the feeding……

You my friend are an idiot! First of all it’s “Dreams From my father”, and second that passage is nowhere to be found in the first chapter. Get your **** straight before you say anything, you ****** loser!

[JR: Editorial note. This was NOT a drive by comment. He left an email address. I thanked him for his comment and tried to point out how he had missed several of the salient points. He seem to feel that I was "empowering" him as opposed to trying to set the record straight. Interesting that he couldn't compose a single sentence without profanity. Obviously not a Jasper. Sigh, so people with no sense of humor or understanding are out there to be prayed for.]

*** begin quote ***

Dover, DE (LifeNews.com) — The Catholic bishop that oversees the diocese where Joe Biden worships says he will not deny the incoming vice president communion over his pro-abortion views. Bishop W. Francis Malooly’s decision stands in contrast to one made by Bishop Joseph F. Martino, of Biden’s hometown Scranton, Pennsylvania.
