The RAF bomber pilot who single-handedly recovered the body of the co-pilot and comrade he lost on Berlin raid 60 years ago

*** begin quote ***

Crammed together in their unwieldy aircraft and utterly dependent on one another, the bomber crews of the Second World War forged friendships that often only death could break.

Which is why Pilot Officer Reg Wilson never forgot the night more than 60 years ago when he lost two friends in the night skies over Germany.

*** end quote ***

No one left behind! NO one forgotten. You can, at any age, make a small difference. A moral obligation fulfilled. A comrade remembered. A duty completed.

Sadly, I hope I haven’t forgotten any such obligtions.

Weekend course brought about career-path clarity
Posted: October 19, 2008

*** begin quote ***

For the first 10 years or so of my professional career, I worked in the heavy construction and geotechnical engineering businesses. My father and maternal grandfather were both civil engineers and our family owned one of the largest construction companies in the Caribbean. It was expected that I would follow in the family tradition and ultimately play a role in the management of the business. I studied civil engineering at Manhattan College and worked for a variety of construction companies during college summer vacations.

*** and ***

My big break came unexpectedly. I read that a local community college was conducting a weekend long course in dealing with midlife career change. I promptly enrolled in the course and it was terrific. It prompted me to take a comprehensive inventory of my talents and professional tools. I also was urged to isolate those things that gave joy to my life; my passions so to speak. I was determined to try to earn a living from those things that I was most passionate about — music and sports. And at the end of the exercise, I wrote a generic job description of what I was seeking from employment opportunities. Every position I have held since 1977 has satisfied that three-page precis that I wrote that day. It has been the road map for my professional life.

*** begin quote ***

I’ve had a lot of run-ins with homelessness over the years, most especially in college. First, at Manhattan College, where it’s pretty much the standard in the city and second at UCSC, where the lifestyle and nice weather lent itself to beach bums. I know how easy it is to become desensitized to it, to lump people into the category of “lazy” or “drunk” or “unmotivated” and not think of them as dimensional or human. Because the sadness would be too much.

After watching a crippled man work his way off the subway once, I turned my face into Brian’s jacket. “Doesn’t it physically pain you sometimes to watch someone with a handicap? It’s like you want to help, but there’s nothing you can do. You can see their struggle, but you can’t-” Maybe it’s that helplessness and hopelessness that prevents me from giving the way I could.

*** and ***

One homeless boy I met on the beach. His parents abandoned him when he was twelve and ever since he’d been shuffled through a series of bad foster homes, until he was finally released at eighteen, penniless and without support, the same as a prisoner. With nowhere to go, he drifted from sunny locale to sunny locale - Hawaii, California…getting food and sun where he could. I rubbed lotion onto his back so he wouldn’t get sunburned and he admitted he hadn’t been touched in months. He shivered beneath my hands.

Is it the wrong thing to give? Is it the right thing to give? Who’s in most need? (And is it always about need?) With the economy being what it is, everyone has a sad story. All day long at work, I hear peoples’ sad stories about losing their jobs and their homes and their kids and their dignity. And they’re always asking for the same thing in return - money. But I’m not sure money is always the answer. I think there are other things - smaller things, kindnesses like a making someone a good meal or helping them move furniture into a new apartment, that are worth more. From working in a law office, I know that everything has its price - your life itself has a dollar price, but isn’t there another less calculable, indefinable price to a human life?

I feel like I’ve cracked my moral compass somewhere along the way. I don’t know my top from bottom. I want goodness in my life - good food, good people, good travel, good books, but sometimes, even knowing the right choices, I make the wrong ones anyway. I associate with the wrong people or get lost in bad habits. I look for people who are callous or cold or impersonal and then wonder how I got myself in that position and why I can’t find real love…true, heart-rending love, that’s rarely selfish and always kind.

I need to re-center. I need to slough off the bad skin and start fresh. I need a vacation from it all. I need to give from a pure, unselfish place. I need you.

*** end quote ***

[JR: I see a lot of mentions of "manhattan college". It's often impossible to discern "Jasper-nees". I found this piece poignant . Almost too sensitive for it to be written by a fellow Jasper. Submitted for it's value; if not for its Jasper origins.]

Luis Flores: Former Manhattan College Star Looks For A City to Call Home
by Ari Kramer (Analyst)

I am a junior in High School in New York City. I play baseball for my school team. I enjoy College Basketball and Major League Baseball. I love the Yankees and the Manhattan College Jaspers. I play guitar in the band Sunnyside Up. Three of our songs can be heard at www.myspace.com/thesunnysideup

*** begin quote ***

Now known as a journeyman, Flores attended a Manhattan College game in 2008. By the end of the game, rumors that the former Jasper was in the MVP race in Greece had fully circulated Draddy Gymnasium.

Another rumor, which was being spread around a Jaspers basketball fan blog, claimed that Flores participated in the Minnesota Timberwolves training camp earlier this month. Given that he is not on the preseason roster, but is instead on Hapoel Holon’s roster, implies that Flores did not make Minnesota’s preseason team.

Hapoel Holon is just another Israeli basketball team that will succumb to Macabi Tel Aviv about nine times out of ten, but Flores sees this as an opportunity to stay in shape and possibly try out in America next year.

Flores, now 27 years old still has the hope that someday, preferably in the near future, an NBA team will find a way to use him as a 6′1″ shooting guard. Until then, the former Scarlet Knight, Jasper, Rocket, Maverick, Warrior, Nugget, Roseto Shark, Emilia, and Olympian can soak up the sun at the beach in nearby Tel Aviv, eat falafel, and play basketball.

McCarthy wants to boost investment

Thursday, October 16, 2008

By Bettina Thiel

Editor

*** begin quote ***

John McCarthy’s main concern is trying to bring new investments to the state of Connecticut.

The former diplomat is running on the Democratic ticket for the state Senate’s 32nd District. The incumbent is Rob Kane of Watertown.

“Our state ranks last in trying to attract new investment,” McCarthy said, “but it ranks first in young people leaving because they can’t find jobs.”

McCarthy would like to take a more regional approach in solving the state’s economic and budget woes.

The state needs a state-wide investment policy to look at what kind of development it wants to support, and in which location.

“We don’t do that,” he said, and added that many other states pursue an active investment strategy.

The Department of Economic Development does not work closely with the towns.

“What happens is Seymour will be competing with North Carolina,” he said. “That’s not fair.”

Broadening the state’s tax base will allow the state to tap greater sources of revenues and help get a handle on rising property taxes.

McCarthy also thinks it is time to take a look at the state’s income tax distribution. By instituting higher tax rates on people who make $250,000 or more, the state will be able to redirect that income to where it is most needed.

Connecticut is one of only a few states that tax pensions at full value. McCarthy would like to exempt Social Security income and pensions from the income tax.

As for small businesses, he said he supported a health care bill that was passed by the last assembly but vetoed by Gov. M. Jodi Rell.

It would have created a health plan for small business employees and nonprofits.

Biography

McCarthy moved to Woodbury 12 years ago after he retired from the foreign service.

During the 1990s he furthered economic cooperation worldwide while serving as director of the U.S. State Department’s Office of Investment. In that position he “concluded bilateral investment treaties with several nations and led the U.S. delegation to an ongoing United Nations Conference on multinational corporations,” he writes in his online biography.

He also served as economic counselor at the U.S. Mission to the European Union in Brussels, working to expand trade, investment and energy cooperation with Europe.

Since his retirement he served on the board of trustees of Save the Children USA for six years, was chairman of the International Save the Children Alliance from 1999 to 2002, and was president of the Washington Art Association from 2002 to 2006.

He now is on the Woodbury Democratic Town Committee and the board of the World Affairs Council in Hartford, and is a volunteer at Waterbury Hospital and the Children’s Community School in Waterbury.

His wife, Marija, is a painter. They have a son and two daughters.

McCarthy has a bachelor’s degree in history and political science, an Honorary Doctor of Law degree from Manhattan College and a master’s degree in Public Administration from Harvard University. He was born and raised in New York City.

Oxford residents had a chance to meet with him at the Made in Connecticut Fair last weekend at Colonial Tavern.

PRAYERREQUEST: Can you bleed?

REPORTING LIVE FROM THE NEWS DESK
IN THE VIRTUAL JASPER JOTTINGS NEWSROOM …

From “Caitlin Anne Martin” caring bridge site: [Caitlin is the daughter of Martin, Margaret (MC1998)]

*** begin quote ***

Good morning all! I am happy to report that Caitlin is doing relatively well,

{Extraneous Deleted}

I am also writing to ask for you to consider donating blood for Caitlin. She has needed a couple of transfusions recently, and we do not know if that is indicative of things to come as her treatments progress. Its always somehow reassuring to see “Donor Directed” on the blood bag. Its reassuring to think that folks we know and that a piece of our friends are sustaining our daughter. As it turns out, my brother Martin’s girlfriend, Lauren, was the donor who gave Caitlin her last blood boost (I teased her that it means we are blood relatives now), and I know because she was the only donor for Caitlin in the last two months. So if your health and will incline you, please consider donating blood at Sloan. Again, they still prefer that immediate family members NOT donate for Caitlin in case she ever (hopefully not) needs a bone marrow transplant. The details are below - you need to make an appointment and need to mention that this will be donor directed blood for Caitlin Martin when you make the appointment. Thanks for thinking of us!

*** and ***

CAITLIN MARTIN Blood & Platelet Donations

4 year old Caitlin is currently a patient at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. Her treatment for leukemia requires blood and platelet transfusions.

The Martin family would deeply appreciate your donation of blood and/or platelets and hopes you will ask others you know to donate. Donations not used by Caitlin will be released for use by other patients many of whom are children.

Designated donations for Caitlin must be made in the Blood Donor Room of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center

Please visit www.mskcc.org/blooddonations for complete information about donor eligibility and the donation process for blood or platelets.

For answers to questions and to schedule an appointment that is convenient for you please CALL:

Mary Thomas @ 212-639-3335

Coordinator, Blood Donor Program

thomasfm@mskcc.org

Appointments are necessary- All blood types are acceptable

The Blood Donor Room Is Open Every Day

Fri Sat Sun Mon 8:30am - 3:00pm

Tues Wed Th 8:30am - 7:00pm

1250 First Avenue (between 67th/68th Streets)

NYC - Schwartz Building lobby

FREE parking is available for donors at our garage corner of York Avenue.

Whole blood donations take about 1 hour and can be stored for 30 days after testing.

Platelets take approximately 2 1/2 hours for the entire process and can be stored for only 5, 2 of which are used for testing. Therefore it is important to spread out the donations so they do not all expire on the same dates.

# - # - #

[JR: My first introduction to blood donations was at Manhattan College. One of the Engineering Brother Profs, (I think it was Br. Barry Austin), announced that they were running a blood drive up at Plato's Cave. And, ended with the classic line "You guys are really dumb, but probably not too stupid to bleed correctly." I'd assume that with 1500 readers we could muster enough "bleeders" help out a fellow Jasper. Now don't everybody run down at once. I assume that the lady cited will do some "air traffic control".]

Peco hires business development chief

Business First of Columbus

Peco II Inc. has hired an executive from a Texas telecom products maker as its business development chief.

The Galion-based communications power systems maker on Monday said it hired Al Cioffi as vice president of business development. He is in charge of developing new markets and striking partnerships for Peco.

Cioffi arrives at the company from Richardson-based Eltek Valere, where he was vice president of business development and product management. The company was formed last year when Norway’s Eltek ASA bought Richardson’s Valere Power for $130 million.

Cioffi earlier served in an executive role at Dallas-based Reltec Corp. and was a manager and designer for AT&T Bell Laboratories. He received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Manhattan College and a master’s in electrical engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of New York University.

At Peco, Cioffi arrives weeks after the company said its board has begun considering “strategic alternatives” for the business, including an acquisition, merger or sale. Peco (NASDAQ:PIII), which employs about 180 workers, lost $9.2 million on $26.7 million in revenue last year.

Subject: Fwd: NRO: Lives Depend on your Vote

I believe that this is an impotant issue and everyone in my address book, Christian or Jew, black or white, is getting a copy. If you don’t agree, just delete it but maybe, it will start you thinking. It’s worth reading even if you don’t agree. It is a bit of deep reading but might help form some arguments to oppose these views. I’m waiting for some real philosophical, ethical opposition in a debate type statement, not a rebuttal saying this is a lot of hogwash or propagana! There’s the challenge.

[JR: On a personal note, it's hard to imagine any Catholic, any purported "Catholic", or any one who aligns with "Rights" "overlooking" this aspect of O. If you're looking for the Devil's Advocate, then one could make the argument that "No one has ANY rights unless and until they are able to fight for them and then exercise them. You have to fight for, and use them. Might makes rights! You'll give me 'free speech' because if you don't I'll punch your lights out! No fights; no rights. No usages; no rights!" Hence, there is no "right to life" because that baby can't fight for its right. Therefore, the abortion issue is moot. A very brutish world. But one different ethic.]

[JR: Here's a sad commentary!]

http://www.americanthinker.com/2008/10/obamas_culture_of_death_and_th.html

*** begin quote ***

Most analysts agree that it will not be possible for Barack Obama to win this election without the votes of the majority of Catholic voters. Measured at approximately 25% of the American electorate, Catholic voters often determine electoral outcomes in a number of important battleground states. And overall, the candidate who garners the majority of their votes, wins the national election.

According to polling data internals, the Catholic vote is still absolutely up for grabs. It’s currently split right about down the middle.

And Barack Obama has made no secret of his intention to override the Pope’s authority in seeking the Catholic vote.

*** end quote ***

# - # - #

Dear John,

The NY Times has an Obit for Steve today (10/23) that does not mention Manhattan.

His late brother Hank worked with me in the Court System. Hank went to Fairfield and was the first one to bring the Clancy Brothers to a College Campus before they took the nation by storm. An interesting family.

May He Rest In Peace.

Mike

[JR: Thanks, Mike. Much appreciated. Can't get that depth of remembering from the obit. ]

CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER, RETIRES AFTER 17 YEARS

For 15 years, Martin also oversaw the management of the Foundation for Physical Therapy and two other subsidiary corporations under APTA.

“Chuck has been an outstanding team player, role model and asset to the APTA and his leadership and good humor will be missed. He was always a source of sound advice and quick wit to the staff of the many departments he lead, as well as members of the board of directors, component leaders, and Foundation for Physical Therapy staff and trustees,” said APTA Chief Executive Officer John D Barnes. “Chuck earned the respect and friendship of everyone he met along the way, whether on APTA staff, within the physical therapy profession, or among his association peers. A member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) since 1991, Martin currently serves as a facilitator of various ASAE online courses. A former member of the ASAE Finance & Business Operations council, Martin is a frequent workshop and roundtable presenter and has conducted 11 ASAE Peer Review visits. His land-based retirement pursuits will include his favorite sport of golf and spending time with his wife Carol, two children and four grandchildren.

APTA (www.apta.org) is a national organization, representing physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students nationwide. Its goal is to foster advancements in physical therapist education, practice, and research. Incumbent faces challenge for judgeship

By Ariel Zangla, Freeman staff 10/24/2008

*** begin quote ***

KINGSTON - Two candidates are vying for a 14-year term as a state Supreme Court justice in New York’s Third Judicial District.

One-term incumbent Republican Anthony Carpinello of Rensselaer County is being challenged by Democrat Patrick McGrath, a Rensselaer County Court judge. The winner of the Nov. 4 contest will preside over state Supreme Court cases in a district that includes Albany, Columbia, Greene, Rensselaer, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster counties.

{Extraneous Deleted}

McGrath, 55, has been Rensselaer County judge since 1994. He graduated from Manhattan College in 1975 and Albany Law School in 1978. In 2006, he was appointed acting state Supreme Court judge in the Third District.

His previous experience includes serving two four-year terms on the Troy City Police Court beginning in 1985, serving as assistant Rensselaer County district attorney from 1980-82 and serving as deputy chief clerk and chief clerk of Albany County Surrogate’s Court from 1978-80.

“I bring 23 years of trial experience,” McGrath said. He said there is a real need for trial court judges in the Third District because there are only six covering seven counties.

McGrath said he is not interested in going to the Appellate Division because he enjoys trial court. He also said he was the first judge to establish an upstate drug court, in 1997.

McGrath is running on the Democratic and Working Families lines. He and his wife, Louise, live in Troy with their four children, Patrick, Molly, Alison and Timothy.

ENDNOTE: A moral outrage

http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2008/10/obamas_other_big_lie_in_the_de.html

October 19, 2008
Obama’s other Big Lie in the Debate
Laura Dykstra

*** begin quote ***

When he was a state senator Barack Obama voted three times against the Illinois Born-Alive Infants Protection Act (IBAIPA).

*** and ***

Here is a little off teleprompter quote from Obama during that senate debate on what he really thought about a helpless newborn baby: He stuttered:

<Begin Quoting Illinois State Senator Obama>

“nonviable fetus; that if that fetus, or child — however way you want to describe it”… “let’s say, movement or some indication that, in fact, they’re not just coming out limp and dead.”

<End Quoting Illinois State Senator Obama>

As a state senator, Obama voted three times to deny newborn infants a fighting chance at life. There is no other way to honestly describe this portion of Obama’s record: These were votes for infanticide.

*** end quote ***

Now, you all know that I’m a little L libertarian. I have no dog in this POTUS2008 fight.

Both of them are big gooferment socialists who want to rule our lives.

I live in New Jersey. Year after year, I pick the lesser of two evils. In fact, I could really go vote for “Pete Rabbit”, “Peter Piper”, or any other imaginary Peter and have as much effect. The Graveyard vote in Hudson and Camden ensure that the Democrat will win this state. I’ve begun to listen to the Anarchists who say voting only encourages the Socialists. Those opinions may be right.
As a soft of “good Brother’s boy”, I was instructed that it was my moral duty, under pain of sin, to listen attentively to the debates, politicians, choose wisely, and go vote. (Not so sure of that admonition any more. But those Brothers were mean mo … were combat vets from WW2 and Korea and had a strong impression on me.)

This year, when listening to the third debate, I heard this politician look right at the camera and lie! Ok, maybe “lie” is too strong, only God knows what was in his heart at the time. But, I heard a “spin” that made me think of Clinton prevaricate, obscure, and parse the word “is”.

I felt like I was smacked in the face.

I’ve blogged about and reported to you here about the ‘infanticide bill” in Illinois a while ago. That’s how O was on my radar before he became “presidential” material. I know that he voted for this horrific bill. Not even his usual “present” to avoid taking a stand!
In my heart, I know that “abortion” is a tragedy on so many levels. In following the issue, it’s possible for people to hold varying opinions in good conscience. I try never to argue about it. Arguing hardens. Calm discussion allows people to find their own way to His Truth. I’m not so sure I’m exactly right. And, I have so many other flaws, I’m the last one to me lecturing anyone. I’m sure I don’t want the gooferment telling anyone anything. I firmly believe that people will do the right thing if left to their own devices. If something is a “good idea”, it should be EASY to convince everyone to do it. I’m a voluntarist!
In this case, I’d like someone to explain this one to me. Because it leaves me clueless!
In WW2, we heard about eugenics, death camps, and atrocities. The Holocaust, or Shoah, had the infamous Doctor Josef Mengele, German doctor and also an infamous Nazi war criminal, also known as the “Angel of Death”. Certainly, this infanticide legislation rises to that standard! I find this to be a MORAL outrage. Hence, I suggest that it is proper to rebuke publicly vocally and vociferously any one who had a hand in this one.

It goes to what values they hold in the heart!

So with an apology to those that urge “non participation” as a strike for liberty, I’ll go an rebuke this politician at the voting booth. I hope everyone follows their conscience as well. When the Final Judgement comes, with a clear conscience, I will be able to say that when I saw evil, I was a good American and did not stand idly by. I did wht I could. I hope all my fellow Jaspers can say the same.

Vote Life. Vote Small Government. Vote your conscience.

Comment on JObit: Sweeney, Brian Martin (MC1962) by carol burke

I am a friend of Brian and hadn’t seen him in over 11 years. He told me then that he had met a woman who was his soul mate and he hoped to marry her in a year. We had met in Chinatown where we had a meal and talked for hours. We even called Chip Donovan hoping to make another friendly connection.

Anyway, I just read this Jasper note and information about Brian’s death. I am speechless.

Is there a way I can someday contact his wife?

I was inducted at the most recent Fall Honors Convocation, and Dr. Heffernan’s speech to us was articulate, moving, poetic, and engaging. He was quite possibly the best speaker I have heard in my last three and a half years at Manhattan College.
