I am working on the Prunty genealogy and I found your notice of Christopher and Victoria getting married. Any chance of finding out who his parents are?

I have a Christopher, b. in 1967, whose parents are Eugene and Barbara, living in Braxton, WV. I am hoping that is them.

Dear John,

Not necessarily for publication, but I thought Dottie’s comment was interesting and the fact that Manhattan College is in the Bronx was one of the criteria.

Mike

# - # - #

THIS WAS MY LIFE,ALTHOUGH FROM YONKERS,,IT WAS RIGHT NEXT TO THE BRONX,,,AND WE WALKED TO RIVERDALE TO VISIT THE SHRINE AT MOUNT ST. VINCENT COLLEGE.. THIS WAS A GREAT WALK BACK TO MY CHILDHOOD AND TEEN AGE YEARS….THANKS..FOR REVIVING THE MEMORIES OF THE GREAT SAFE TIMES TO GROW UP IN……… DOTTIE

# - # - #

YOU KNOW YOU’RE FROM THE BRONX IF:

You’ve played Ringaleevio and Kick the Can around your apartment building.

You know what a Spaldeen is.

You kept your bike underneath the stairway on the first floor hallway of your

apartment building.

Your fire escape was the closest thing you had to a back yard.

You know someone who went to Roosevelt, Taft, Morris, Columbus, Evander, Smith,Gompers, Addams, Dodge, Kennedy, Truman, Lehman, Clinton, Walton,Science,Monroe, Stevenson, All Hallows, Catherine’s, Ursula, Fordham, Rice, Aquinas, Barnabas, The Mount, Stock, Preston, Helena’s, Hayes, Butler, Raymond’s (boys or girls), Spellman, Scanlon, Truman, Tolentine and others.

You know that Lehman College is really Hunter College and that Manhattan College is in The Bronx.

You actually think the subway is fun and a very reliable form of transportation.

You’ve taken the Bx 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 13, 14, 16, 20, 31, 34 or 41 bus at least once in your life.

You agree that the Grand Concourse has too many lights and no parking!

When people ask you where you’re from you tell them the closest train stop or your parish.

You don’t go to Manhattan. You go ‘downtown.’ You say downtown and expect everyone to know that this means Manhattan.

You never realize you have an accent until one of your new neighbors tells you.

There was at least one pizza place about one block from your house.

You went to Orchard Beach and walked all the way to section 13 which was the best section.

You went to Rye Playland at least once a year.

Your friends came over to hang out on the stoop or in front of your house.

You’ve been to the Bronx Zoo & Botanical Gardens on class trips.

You shopped at Alexander’s on Fordham Road.

You call it the Stadium, not Yankee Stadium.

You used to go to Fordham Road to buy jewelry, clothes and household appliances and attend the movies.

You bought a slice of pizza AND a soda for $1.00.

You still don’t understand why people are crazy enough to drive to the Stadium for a Yankee game, when you can take the 4 or the D train.

You know that Riverdale is really the Bronx.

You know how to get on a bus using the rear door.

You have never been to the Statue of Liberty or the Empire State Building.

You know that the Bronx is the best borough of all, except for maybe Manhattan……maybe.

In high school, you cruised the strip on Central Ave in Yonkers. You had to take city buses and/or the subway to get to high school, unless you went to Spellman and you got your own special bus.

Your mother would yell your name out the window when it was time to come home.

You played stick ball and stoop ball.

Jaywalking is imaginary. It is an important skill you were taught when learning how to cross the street.

You knew New Jersey sucked before the phrase came into vogue…..

You have a great sense of humor.

During the summer, you went to the public park to play in the sprinklers.

You know that all people from places outside of the Bronx don’t know what they missed out on — it’s the only borough with The (’da) in its name!

And..you know you’re from the Bronx if this email made you a little nostalgic, and you wish you could go back and do it all over again, but you know that it will never be the same again for the rest of your life!!

You were privileged to have been there at the right time and place!!!

Hi John,

I found an Edward J. Dillon Class of 1950 in the 1999 MCAD.

Isn’t it a shame that Alma Mater still cannot get an online directory up and running after all these years?

Just look at all the history and alums they will never again capture anything on.

Dona nobis pacem.

[JR: It must just not be important to them. I really really don't understand it. Ive talked until I am blue in the face. Social Media is hot. LinkedIn is valued at a billion dollars. Advertisers would die to sponsor ads on a network of 6k fat rich old (mostly white) guys with more money than brains. But, they have the old meme of "milk the alums". The famous inet quote about 'conversations' is never more accurate in the sense of Alma Mater and Alumni. The alums would flock to a site that was just average.]

Catholics, who believe that Jesus rose from the dead and in the Life everlasting, should have no problem dealing with social justice. Those of us who listened to the priests and brothers who sought to introduce us to the Church’s traditional teachings on social justice so many years ago would also know that it involves much more than a living wage, but the proper governance of all relations between employer and employed and the rich and poor.

Far too often, libertarians treat the labor of the poor as merely a commodity for sale at whatever price the market offers, instead of an aspect of their God-given humanity, possessing a far greater intrinsic value than any mere material object.

If the teachings of the Church on personal morality are to be followed and enforced with enthusiasm, so should those on social justice. I might have left the Church years ago if it weren’t for my undying hope that someday Catholics might take those teachings seriously.

(3) Labor has fallen under the spell of the Socialists, Gooferment, and corrupt 'leaders'. The ability to withhold one's labor is the ultimate veto. In a truly free society, we can exclude those who offend us. A very powerful weapon. Unfortunately, Holy Mother Church has been led astray by its challenges. It is failing to be the traditional refuge of people oppressed by governments. The recent support of the American bishops for a higher minimum wage exposes them as flunkies of gooferment. Reducing liberty and ceding to gooferment a role it should not be playing -- arbiter of what two people can agree on. The fact that it throws poor people out of work and puts more people on the dole which means more gooferment seems to escape their notice. Social justice indeed. Virtual slavery is more like it.]

It was my pleasure to have prepared Jason’s nomination package. No other basketball player was nominated, so its not to early for this group to start thinking about candidates for next year. Graduates from 1998 and earlier are eligible.

Dr. Dennis Fenton and Dr. Steve Kaldor Join Amira Board of Directors

***Begin Quote***

SAN DIEGO, March 31 /PRNewswire/ — Amira Pharmaceuticals, a small molecule pharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of compounds to treat inflammatory disease, today announced the appointment of two additional members to its board of directors: Dennis M. Fenton, Ph.D. and Stephen W. Kaldor, Ph.D.

Dr. Fenton has 30 years of pharmaceutical and biotechnology experience, including over two decades at Amgen where he played an instrumental role in the development of the company into a global, fully-integrated, multi-billion dollar organization. Fenton’s broad background includes executive leadership roles in manufacturing, process development, sales and marketing, operations and quality control. His most recent role at Amgen was as Executive Vice President of Operations.

Fenton holds a B.S. in Biology from Manhattan College and a Ph.D. in Microbiology from Rutgers University.

“Dennis is a biotechnology pioneer,” said chief executive officer, Bob Baltera. “His experience and insight from his years at Amgen will be extremely useful for Amira as we plan our future. In addition to Dennis, we are also very pleased that Steve Kaldor will join our board of directors. Steve’s experience in successful start-up companies further deepens our pool of experience and knowledge and I’m sure he will serve as a great partner for us.”

Dr. Kaldor is currently president and chief executive officer of Ambrx, a private biotechnology company focused on the development of next-generation, protein-based medicines. Prior to joining Ambrx, Kaldor served as president and chief scientific officer of Syrrx, a structure-based drug discovery company, which he led through its $270 million acquisition by Takeda in 2005. He also spent over twelve years in various research and development roles at Eli Lilly and is a co-inventor of Viracept(R), a marketed AIDS drug.

Kaldor holds a B.S. in Chemistry from Columbia University and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Harvard University.

About Amira

Founded in 2005 and headquartered in San Diego, Amira Pharmaceuticals is a small molecule pharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and early development of compounds to treat inflammatory disease.

The company combines the rigor of a big pharmaceutical company with the ingenuity and energy of a small company, creating an environment for efficient and effective pre-clinical and clinical program decisions. Its scientific founders have successfully worked together for more than a decade and were pivotal in the discovery of a number of inflammatory drugs, including Singulair(R). The drug hunters at Amira are now actively leveraging their history of success to create high-value compounds for the future.

In February 2008, Amira Pharmaceuticals and GlaxoSmithKline entered a global agreement for Amira’s FLAP inhibitor program. The deal follows positive phase 1 data from novel product candidate AM103 for the oral treatment of respiratory disease.

Amira has raised $40 million to date from investors including Novo A/S (Copenhagen, Denmark), Avalon Ventures (San Diego, CA), Prospect Ventures (Palo Alto, CA) and Versant Ventures (Menlo Park, CA). For more information, visit http://www.amirapharm.com.

County executive speaks of our duty to veterans; town supervisor unveils flag depository

By Arlene Gross

***Begin Quote***

Marking the 64th anniversary of the D-Day invasion at Normandy, hundreds of people gathered June 6 to raise money and support for the Fighting 69th infantry, which was deployed in March on a mission to Afghanistan.

Troops’ families along with veterans, politicians and Huntington citizens filled the Terrace Room of Oheka Castle for breakfast, musical entertainment, and a salute to the men and women who have served as well as those who are serving our country.

More than $8,000 was raised for the 137 members of the Fighting 69th infantry, for “whatever they need to ease their lives while they’re serving these 15 months,” said Carol Rocco, coordinator of veteran’s affairs for the town.

As part of the U.S. National Guard, troops from the Fighting 69th infantry — from Company B, Huntington Armory and Company D, Bay Shore — are stationed throughout Afghanistan to help train the Afghan National Army and Police Force

During Friday’s event, County Executive Steve Levy spoke of the county’s commitment to returning veterans. “It’s our duty as American citizens to make sure they’re not only welcomed back with open arms but we’re there to care for them and their families,” he said.

To that end, Levy said a new county-owned and operated East End health clinic for veterans will open by late 2008 or early 2009 at the Riverhead County Center in the Town of Southampton.

He added that operation “Veterans Stand Down” — a county partnership with nonprofits and local agencies that provide housing, financing, employment, food and clothing to veterans — aims to “make sure that in Suffolk County there’s no such thing as a homeless veteran. I can tell you, we’re going to help fight until that is a reality.”

Town Supervisor Frank Petrone waxed poetic in his introduction of Beth Delli Pizzi, president of the Family Readiness Group that serves the infantry’s families. “When people volunteer and they give of themselves, they don’t really recall where it starts or where it comes from,” Petrone said.

Introducing Lieutenant Colonel Charles Crosby, the Fighting 69th battalion commander, Petrone said, “The Fighting 69th count on him. We count on him, and he hasn’t let anyone down.”

Commander Crosby said when the troops are in harm’s way, they’re stronger and safer from the support they get from community.

Keynote speaker, columnist and author James Brady, who recently penned a book entitled “Why Marines Fight,” regaled the crowd with humorous personal tales.

“I didn’t want to be drafted, so I joined the Marine Corps,” Brady said. “Smarter people have found better ways to avoid the draft…. When I graduated from Manhattan College in June of 1950, the Korean War began 15 minutes later.”

Of the Marines he served with, Brady said, “Ladies and gentleman, they were giants. And there are giants in this room today.”

Petrone then unveiled a mailbox that the town will keep at Town Hall as a depository for old flags. “This mailbox will sit in our lobby to collect tattered and worn flags so they can be disposed of properly,” he said.

Following the breakfast, Jennifer Fullam, whose husband, Captain Michael Fullam has been in Afghanistan with the Fighting 69th since January, said she is taking it “day by day.” Jennifer, who lives in Malverne with their six-month-old daughter, said she communicates with her husband sporadically, depending on the modes available to him, and hopes to see him in September, when he expects to get leave.

Having already served a year in Iraq two years ago, Sergeant Michael Cantley was leaving the next day for his second tour in Afghanistan. “I thought it was going to be easier the second time around, but it’s just as hard,” his wife, Lily Cantley, of Smithtown, said. “Anything can happen.”

Acknowledging that the hardest part is the emptiness she feels in spending holidays alone, Cantley said, “You just have to pray and keep your hopes high.”

Dear John,

In response to Jerry Plunkett’s e-mail, you asked if others were interested in the return of the “unnamed Jasper’s” comments.

Although I mostly disagreed with the libertarian comments (and BTW, I, too, think that the labor of another human being should be recognized as something more than a “commodity”) of the CIC and “curmudgeon”, I enjoyed reading them and sometimes responding to them and I would welcome them back.

JFOUND: Brazil, John (MC2006) has an album of his music for sale

http://www.myspace.com/johnbrazile

After playing in several cover bands in Boston and New York over the past few years, twenty-three year old singer-songwriter John Brazile has written an album of his own called Commencement.

The album is a mix of gritty Americana and roots-rock in the style of Ryan Adams, the Wallflowers, and The Counting Crows. Brazile recorded much of it in his home studio in Worcester, Massachusetts in early 2008. He has recently been racking up car mileage for gigs in Memphis and New York in support of the album.

College audiences were introduced to Brazile via his previous EP, Sessions, as it received spins at a handful of college radio stations in the Northeast. Subsequent shows from ski resorts to frat-house basements have helped the band to develop their live act.

Brazile is currently performing weekly shows at New England clubs and working to promote Commencement. Tours of the East Coast and South are planned for the remainder of 2008. There are two new albums in the works as well.

This page is currently the primary source for news, music and upcoming shows. The website www.John.Brazile.com will be launched in late June.

HERE WE GO: BOB STEI’S MAJOR ANOUNCEMENT

So……

Let me start off by telling you a bit of a dream I had as a child and a teenager. Remember, I’m just a stupid hick from Randallstown, Maryland! I was obsessed with a few things: the radio industry, my birth home of Philadelphia and a rock group called The Smiths. Never in my life did I think I would live the dream of combining all three passions, until this month. It is with excitement and sadness, that I announce to you my friends, that this Saturday night will be my final night on 95.1 WZZO, as I make the transfer to my new radio challenge: weekends at WRFF 104.5 “Radio 104.5 PHILADELPHIA!!! This is my dream come true!

The last four years in the Lehigh Valley have been some of the best times in my career and my life! I will truly look back on my Saturday programs with fondness and great memories. I’ve not only had a blast airing some crazy phone calls and sharing a part of my life, I’ve also worked with some amazingly talented people and met some friends for life. I met so many of my favorite bands and hung out at so many crazy places. You also were part of my life as I bought a house; lost 60 pounds and most importantly, I got to share the stories when my daughter was born. I can’t thank you enough for letting me be a part of your life!

It would take forever to thank every single person who helps make this happen! In my 18(wow!) years in the media, soo many great people have been by my side in every move I’ve made. However, I will take a second and thank John and Wendy from Radio 104.5’s Programming department for putting faith in me, Brian and Renie at Clear Channel for keeping me buys at the station and getting my face out there, and to my friends Soscia, Meg, Zach and Josh for listening to endless “air checks” and answering a million times, “How does this sound?” Most importantly, I thank the two most important people in my life, my wife Melissa and my daughter Kimberly who have sacrificed many, many nights and weekends, and are as excited about Daddy being home as I am!

For now, you can catch me Sunday evenings on Radio 104.5 or www.radio1045.com from 6-9pm. I honestly can say, musically this is the greatest radio station in the world!

This Saturday I look forward to one more night at WZZO, and hopefully we’ll decide where to celebrate afterwards. I will keep this my space, and all my other contact information the same. I truly can not thank all of my listeners and co-workers at WZZO enough for everything! Not bad for a dumb hick from Randallstown, Maryland.

With love and gratitude,

Bob Stei

They tell me people are supposed to write books in Brooklyn or Manhattan, but I didn’t get that memo in time. Outside my window in the Bronx, neighbors exchange greetings in Greek by day, and Manhattan College students stumble riotously home from parties at night. Scanlon ‘eternally grateful’ for time at Western

Outgoing president will return to East Coast

by Jimmy Myers

Saturday, June 28, 2008

***Begin Quote***

Dr. Jim Scanlon is Irish, Catholic and spiritual. So it’s not surprising that he believes God has a hand in his good fortune.

“And I’m eternally grateful that providential design has me here — best place I’ve been,” the retiring president of Missouri Western State University said from his office last week.

He makes his final Western-related public appearance today at an alumni association function in Kansas City. From there, he and his wife, Lauren, will navigate a van (the Clampett van, as they refer to it) stacked with their belongings to their beach home in North Carolina.

Being back on the East Coast brings Dr. Scanlon’s life full circle.

Born and raised in New York City, Dr. Scanlon lost his father at a young age. His grandmother on his mother’s side, who immigrated from Ireland, moved into the home soon after the death of his father, who also was of Irish stock.

“There is a very poetic strain in the Irish — a strong interest in literature and poetry,” he said of his path in education that led to a doctorate in English literature.

In a house full of Irish women (and a younger brother), Dr. Scanlon learned one truth: “It was never a question in my mind after that experience that women and men are equals,” he said. “They were strong, capable women.”

He paid his way through Manhattan College, taking the subway to jobs in neighboring boroughs, studying in his spare time and

eventually earning a graduate position at an Ivy League school — Brown University. He took his first job after graduation at the University of Illinois as an English professor. A year later, he was chairing the school’s rhetoric program.

Dr. Scanlon came to Western, his fifth university in a nearly 40-year career, to fill the vacant president’s seat in 2001. Under his watch, Western earned its university designation, garnered more than $10 million in private donations and saw campus building improvements and additions. He also established the foundation of the new American regional university, a phrase he coined that describes a university steeped in applied learning and community involvement.

In the final week of his presidency, the university released findings that suggest three athletes were given a total of more than $1,000 cash, which is in violation of NCAA rules. Asked if the event would mar his legacy, Dr. Scanlon said, “No. Not at all.”

“The forthright and thorough way the university dealt with this demonstrates the university’s integrity,” he responded. “Western is an institution of integrity.”

Former president Dr. Janet Gorman Murphy’s retirement, announced in 1999, was followed by a fruitless round of searches for a successor. Finally, the governing board came across Dr. Scanlon, a provost at Youngstown State University in Ohio. Although he was Ivy-League educated, it wasn’t in administration. Rather, Dr. Scanlon was and is a man of Shakespeare.

“Shakespeare helps us understand human motivation, how humans interact in a way that is very helpful when you work with people,” he said.

Taking questions about his retirement, Dr. Scanlon’s eyes, on occasion, well with tears. But it’s not in thinking about his nearly four decades in education that provokes the water works.

“The people make it most difficult to leave,” he explained of leaving the students, faculty, and staff at Western and residents of St. Joseph. “For both Lauren and me, it has been our best time.”

Dr. Scanlon, 64, asked a retired friend some time back how he knew when it was time to retire. The friend replied, “You just know.”

“I think about a year or so ago, I think I just knew,” Dr. Scanlon said.

Karen Elifrits, Dr. Scanlon’s executive associate, has worked side by side with him for the past seven years. She described Dr. Scanlon as a “what you see is what you get” kind of guy who hasn’t changed since Day 1.

“He taught me that everyone is equal,” she said. “He always said, from the custodian on up, he values everyone. He values people, and that’s his greatest strength.”

Though his doctorate is in English literature, Dr. Scanlon loves to read mysteries. As he relaxes at his beach home in North Carolina, he’ll start work on mystery books of his own.

“God only knows if they’ll ever be published,” he said of the novels he plans to pen. “But that isn’t a critical factor, in my point of view.”

Retirement, he said, will allow the Scanlons to “reconnect” with family on the East Coast. Birthdays will no longer be celebrated through the phone lines.

“This is a wonderful life,” he said, “but it doesn’t go on forever.”
