Herbert F. McCaffrey, 79, of Spring Hill, Fla., passed away peacefully at Hernando/Pasco Hospice in Pasco, Fla. Friends will be received on Thursday, May 1, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Madison Memorial Home, 159 Main St., Madison. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 2, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Vincent Martyr Church, 26 Green Village Rd. in Madison. Herbert will then be laid to rest at St. Vincent Martyr Cemetery following the service.

Mr. McCaffrey was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and came to Spring Hill, Fla., six years ago from Forked River. He graduated from Manhattan College with a bachelors degree in electrical engineering in 1953. He retired from AT&T Long Lines in 1982 after 35 years. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was a past commander of the Lackawanna Sail and Power Squadron and was a coxswain with the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 15-08 of Hampton Beach, Fla., where he was a past communications staff officer and instructor. He also received a U.S.C.G.A. sustained Service Award during hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Audrey T. West of Spring Hill, Fla.; two sons, Keith McCaffrey of Yorktown, Va., and Kenneth McCaffrey of Chatham; three daughters, Carol Ann Martyniuk of Vernon, Eileen Corritori of Long Valley and Kerri McCaffrey of Ironia; three brothers, Charles McCaffrey of Brooksville, Fla., Leonard McCaffrey of Syosset, N.Y., and 13 grandchildren, Matt, Christie and Michael Martyniuk, Kathleen, Erin, Kevin Corritori, Connor and Colin Manning, Kyle and Ryan McCaffrey, Kara, Neil and Leigh McCaffrey.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Fresh Air Fund (online) or Hernando/Pasco Hospice, 12107 Majestic Blvd., Hudson, Fla. 34667.

Rockland engineer to help Ugandan town get clean water

Not many researchers get to see the product of their labor helping real people in real life. Joseph Zambito, a mechanical engineer from West Nyack, is one of them.

Next month, Zambito, 24, will travel with a team of engineers to a farming community in Uganda to install an engine that uses biofuels and is able to produce electricity, pump water and press the oil that it needs to run. The trip is sponsored by Engineers Without Borders, a nonprofit humanitarian organization that works in developing communities worldwide to improve their quality of life.

“I’m really excited,” said Zambito. “When you think about helping others, people usually donate money. When you actually go to those you are helping … it feels incredible.”

Zambito was studying for a Masters degree at Manhattan College in the Bronx last year when he overheard a teacher discuss a project involving biofuels with another student. Zambito was intrigued.

He signed up for the project called Bio Engine Longevity Tests, or BELT, and over the last year has been working to extend the life of the engine that uses oil from jatropa, a locally grown vegetable, instead of the more polluting diesel. In addition to the longevity tests, Zambito has been one of the main designers of a system that makes the viscous jatropa oil thin enough to run the engine.

Called a multifunction platform, or MFP, the engine is being used in several countries in western Africa to help communities reduce time spent in repetitive tasks. The 800-pound single-cylinder engine allows for different attach-ments that can be use to mill, grind, expel oil, pump water and generate electricity.

With more free time, adults can do other work to generate income, and children can go to school.

The team - Zambito and three students from Columbia University - will leave May 17 for Soroti, a district located in the northeastern part of Uganda. The community has 840 families, with 40 farming cooperatives, and for the last 2 1/2 years has been struggling with rebel insurgencies, regional conflicts and cattle raids.

An MFP is already in place in Soroti but needs to be replaced by one that can run nonstop for a longer period. In Soroti, where residents grow jatropa, the engine will be used expel oil from jatropa seeds, and as a backup power gen-erator in the town school.

It will also help reduce the workload for young girls who walk several miles to get clean drinking water and then walk back with water-filled containers on their heads.

While the team is in Soroti, they will try to bring drinking water into town by using a pump that gets power from the MFP engine.

“Whatever time we can give them so that they don’t have to bring water to their home, means that more children can go to school,” said Zambito.

While there is currently only one MFP in Soroti, Zambito and his team are hoping to bring more to the town. Zambito estimates that 20 engines will be able to light up the whole town.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College will award master’s degrees to students in the graduate programs of education and engineering, as well as bachelor’s degrees in organization management to students in the adult degree completion program, at its Spring (Graduate) Commencement on Wednesday, May 21. The ceremony will be held in the College’s Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers at 4:30 p.m.

During the ceremony, an honorary Doctor of Science will be presented to George Magovern ’45, M.D., retired chairman of the department of surgery at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pa.

After graduating from Manhattan College and Union University, Magovern completed his medical education at Marquette University. He did his surgical residency at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York and at New York Medical Center (Downstate), followed by his residency in thoracic and cardiovascular surgery at George Washington University. He joined Allegheny General Hospital’s medical staff in 1959 and quickly earned a reputation as an innovator in medicine.

In 1961, Magovern made medical history by performing the first heart valve replacement in Pittsburgh. The recipient of many awards, he was recently named by Pittsburgh Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential Pittsburghers of the Century.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College will award close to 700 degrees in some 40 major fields of study from its five schools in arts, business, education, engineering and science at its 166th Undergraduate Commencement on Sunday, May 18. Students who completed their studies in September 2007, February 2008 and May 2008 will participate in the ceremony to be held in the College’s Draddy Gymnasium at 1:00 p.m.

During the ceremony, an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters will be presented to William F. Baker, Ph.D., chief executive officer of Educational Broadcasting Corporation (EBC).

Baker has been at the head of EBC since 1987. During his tenure, the station has grown and created new programs, such as Charlie Rose, City Arts and Religion and Ethics Newsweekly. He established the Educational Resources Center, which has become America’s most prolific teacher trainer in multimedia technologies.

Baker’s career spans four decades. Prior to assuming his current position, he was president of Westinghouse Television and chairman of the cable programming companies. During his 10 years at Westinghouse, five cable networks were launched, including Discover Channel and the Disney Channel. He established the successful national program PM Magazine and introduced Oprah Winfrey as a talk show host.

FATHER JOHN A. SULLIVAN, 77, of SEASIDE PARK, former diocesan pastor, college theology professor and retired priest of the Paterson Diocese, died Monday, April 28. A native of Morristown, Father Sullivan graduated from Assumption School, the former Bayley High School, Morristown, and St. Peter’s College, Jersey City. He studied for the priesthood at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Darlington, and North American College, Rome, where he completed his theological studies and was ordained to the priesthood in 1955. After receiving his licentiate in sacred theology from Gregorian University, Rome, in 1956, he served as assistant pastor at St. Philip Parish, Clifton (1956-61), and then was named director of Morris Catholic High School, Denville, in addition to being appointed procurator of the former diocesan mission in Bolivia. In 1965, he was named rector of the former Neumann Prep, Wayne, and remained there until 1968, when he was named pastor of St. Joseph Parish, Mendham. He received a master’s degree from Manhattan College in 1968. In 1972, he was granted permission to join the theology faculty at Mount St. Mary’s University, Emmittsburg, Md., where he taught until 1990. He marked the 50th anniversary of his ordination in 2005. After retiring, he moved to Seaside Park, where he resided at the time of his death.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Assumption, Morristown. Bishop Serratelli will preside. Homilist at the Mass will be Monsignor John B. Wehrlen. Doyle Funeral Home, Morristown, is in charge of arrangements.

Cassell, a resident of Babylon and CEO of Catholic Charities of Diocese of Rockville Centre, will attend the official United States arrival ceremony for Pope Benedict VXI at the White House on April 16, 2008. President Bush is scheduled to preside over the formal welcome on the South Lawn before hosting the pontiff in the Oval Office on what is the second day of the visit.

Pope Benedict’s official arrival is April 15 at Andrews Air Force Base. The trip marks his first visit to the U.S. as Pope. His six-day itinerary in both Washington and New York City will include the 9/11 Ground Zero site, addressing the United Nations, and celebrating Masses at baseball stadiums in both cities.

Cassell received her official invitation from the Oval Office via e-mail April 9.

It is a personal joy for me as his very first encyclical letter was ‘God Is Love’ which addresses the vital role charity plays in our church and in the life of every community.

Cassell was appointed CEO of Catholic Charities by Bishop John R. McGann on December 1, 1999. She is the first female to hold this position in the Diocese of Rockville Centre and is also the first lay woman to serve in this capacity in any of the eight dioceses throughout New York State.

In December 2001, Bishop William Murphy appointed Cassell to the Bishop’s Cabinet as Secretary for Social Services, which brought additional responsibility for the Diocesan Offices of Prison Ministry and Respect Life. 11:13 a.m., April 30, 2008–Charles H. Thornton, chairman of Charles H. Thornton and Company LLC, will deliver UD’s third annual Arnold D. Kerr Lecture in Engineering Mechanics at 3:30 p.m., May 7, in the Trabant Center Multipurpose Room. The lecture, “Structural Engineering in the 21st Century,” will be preceded by a reception at 3 p.m.

A world-renowned structural engineer and member of the National Academy of Engineering, Thornton visited UD in 2002 to present a public lecture on the collapse of the World Trade Center.

In his talk, Thornton will share his observations on the “total disconnect between designers and constructors with respect to constructability” and discuss new computer-based tools that are improving the practice of structural engineering.

Through examples like the baseball stadium in Washington, D.C.; Soldier Field in Chicago; and Yankee Stadium, Giants-Jets stadium, the Nets arena, and the new New York Times headquarters in New York City, Thornton will discuss the positive changes occurring in the design and construction industry. “Paperless projects are a reality,” he says.

Thornton was founding principal of the New York-based Thornton-Tomasetti Group, where he spent most of his career. He earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Manhattan College and master’s and doctoral degrees from New York University. Thornton is a registered professional engineer in 26 states.

His 44 years of experience with Thornton Tomasetti included involvement in the design and construction of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of projects in the U.S. and overseas, ranging from hospitals, arenas and high-rise buildings, to airports, transportation facilities and special projects. An expert in the area of building collapse and structural failure analysis, he has testified for many clients during litigation.

In 1978, Thornton led the engineering team investigation of the causes of the collapse of the Hartford Coliseum Space Truss Roof and the scaffold at Pleasants Power Station in West Virginia. In 1987, he directed the investigation of the collapse of the New York State Thruway Schoharie Bridge, and in 1996 he was a member of the FEMA Building Performance Assessment Team that investigated the Oklahoma City bombing. Most recently, Thornton was a member of the oversight team on the National Institute of Standards and Technology study of the World Trade Center collapse investigation.

Thornton is also known for his dedication to community service through his work as chairman and founder of the ACE Mentor Program, a nonprofit organization that each year offers guidance and training to 1,800 inner city high school students in architecture, construction and engineering in 28 cities across the U.S.

Sponsored by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, the lecture series was initiated in honor of Arnold Kerr, professor emeritus of civil engineering, upon his retirement in 2004. Kerr is an internationally recognized expert in engineering mechanics, with a particular focus on railway engineering.
