ADMINISTRIVIA: New format and using blogs has saved a lot of time

Just for the record, and to give you all a peek behind the “curtain”. I assembled, edited, and pushed this week’s edition in just over ONE HOUR!

Why should you care? It allows me to include in the weekly push items that were found yesterday. Under the old meme, I had to cut off on Wednesday, do hours of prep work, to push on Saturday. I pushed on Saturday in case the Inet pushed back (i.e., the many moving parts stopped moving) and I could recover. While my process still has a lot of rough edges, it seems to be working from this side of the glass.

Hopefully it’s working on your side as well.

Agency leader hits the ground running
Jim Farrelly’s high energy and family values equip him for the challenging role.

Jim Farrelly is an experienced marathon runner. Good thing. He has a long road to negotiate if he expects to remake the agency that oversees early-childhood programs in Pasco and Hernando counties. Even he recognizes it. “It’s not going to be an outstanding year,” he said. “But we’re certainly on the road back.” In the end, however, Farrelly not only expects to revive the Pasco Hernando Early Learning Coalition, but he plans to make it thrive.

“I’ve got my eye on being No. 1 in the state of Florida,” said Farrelly, whose most recent job was heading a nonprofit agency that provides guardians to incapacitated adults in New Jersey. “Give me time.”

Those who work closely with Farrelly already are heaping on the praise.

“I never thought such a breath of fresh air could come out of New Jersey,” joked Lisa Hammond, chairwoman of the volunteer board that oversees the coalition.

In January, Farrelly took over as executive of the coalition. The nonprofit agency oversees day care centers that serve low-income children and those who participate in the voluntary pre-kindergarten program open to everyone.

{Extraneous Deleted}

After reviewing about 90 resumes, board members settled on Farrelly, a 58-year-old native New Yorker and former school superintendent.

Until he flew in for his job interview last fall, he had never “set foot in Pasco or Hernando,” he proudly pointed out to board members during his first official meeting last month.

He has dubbed 2008 a year of “R and R.” In Farrelly speak, that means reorganization and rebuilding.

{Extraneous Deleted}

“This man is a blessing,” the agency’s quality manager, Noreen St. Jean, said after Farrelly attended his first board meeting.

All the hard work has left Farrelly little time to train for marathons, although he still runs most days at 5 a.m.

“I’ve retired from marathons,” he said. “I’m only going to do half-marathons from now on.”

Anne Louise McGeorge Mallon

MALLON ANNE LOUISE McGEORGE

***Begin Quote***

Was born on September 12, 1923 in Ambridge, PA (35 miles Northwest of Pittsburgh). Her parents were C.S. McGeorge, M.D., originally of Darlington, PA and “Carrie” (Caroline Anne) Caulfield, born in Enon Valley, PA. Following her graduation from Radcliffe College in War-accelerated January 1945, she went to work at the Aetna Casualty Company, where, on that Ascension Thursday, she met Edward Vincent Mallon, Manhattan College and Columbia Law, on the “other side of the table” on a Claim she was adjusting. They went to Mass together that Holy Day, were soon engaged and, a year later, married at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Pittsburgh. Anne, adopted the two children that Ed, a widower, had and together had five more children, one of whom died as a youth. Extremely active in civic affairs (Red Cross, Brownies and Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and the clubs and societies of the Church of the Immaculate Conception), Ed and Anne had settled in Montclair, New Jersey (the middle ground between their native states) and vacationed every summer at the family farm in Enon Valley and at Rock Harbor in Orleans on Cape Cod. When her youngest child was well into Elementary School in Montclair, Anne earned a Masters Degree at Rutgers University. Later studies included a Summer program at Trinity College in Dublin, where she “cemented” her love of, and academic specialization in, the poets, playwrights and novelists of Ireland. Several years after the death of her husband, she left her beloved Montclair, after nearly four decades, and bought a home in Whiting, NJ, where she lived until a year ago last Summer. She was very active there in her Parish, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton, and in the Birthright Organization. Surviving her are her six children: Edward A. of Florida, Mary E. Flate of Nevada, Katherine A. Johnson of Virginia, William G. of South Carolina, Caroline A. Harris of Virginia and James C. of Virginia as well as eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother-in-law Dick Mallon, of Caldwell, NJ and sister-in-law Claire Marinan (Dick’s twin sister), of Whiting, NJ. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at her Parish Church on February 27, 2008; her burial was at the family plot in Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Upper Montclair, NJ. Anne’s family wish to express their heartfelt gratitude to the Doctors and Staffs of the Crestwood Manor in Whiting, the Community Medical Center and the VanDyke Hospice (both in Toms River, NJ) for the extraordinary, loving care they gave their Mother during the final weeks of her life. Those wishing to make Memorial Gifts in her honor may do so to Birthright of Ocean County, 36 W. Water St., Toms River, NJ 08753, or: VanDyke Hospice, 99 Rt. 37 West, Toms River, NJ 08755.

JNEWS: Lopiano, Victor N. (MC1972) to Lead PPL Nuclear Development Effort

***Begin Quote***

PR Newswire
February 27, 2008 Wednesday 12:47 PM GMT
Electric Industry Veteran to Lead PPL Nuclear Development Effort
DATELINE: ALLENTOWN, Pa. Feb. 27

ALLENTOWN, Pa., Feb. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — PPL Corporation(NYSE:PPL)announced Wednesday (2/27) that Victor N. Lopiano, an electric industry veteran with an extensive background in large construction projects and nuclear technology, will become president of its nuclear development company.

“A key element in PPL’s strategy to grow its generating portfolio is our initiative to develop options for the expansion of our nuclear operations. We are very fortunate to have someone of Vic’s experience join our nuclear development effort at this very important time,” said James H. Miller, chairman, president and chief executive officer of PPL.

Lopiano will become president of PPL Nuclear Development, LLC, which is pursuing a construction and operating license for a potential new nuclear unit in Northeast Pennsylvania, near PPL’s Susquehanna nuclear plant.

In his new position, Lopiano will replace Bryce L. Shriver, who has served as president of PPL Nuclear Development since it was formed in 2007 and plans to retire on June 1. To ensure a smooth transition, Miller said Lopiano will join PPL in March, becoming president of PPL Nuclear Development after Shriver’s retirement.

The nuclear development company also is exploring the possibility of PPL participation in other new nuclear power projects in the United States, the acquisition of existing nuclear plants and a range of joint venture possibilities.

PPL announced in December that PPL Nuclear Development plans to ask the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission to approve a combined license to construct and operate a new generating unit near the Susquehanna plant.

While PPL has not yet decided to move forward with construction, it plans to file a license application by the end of 2008. This time frame will help preserve the potential for federal production tax credits and federal loan guarantees.

Miller said a decision on whether to proceed with construction of a new nuclear unit will depend on a number of factors, including nuclear loan guarantees and a joint venture arrangement.

“Nuclear power plants will be an important part of the U.S. electricity generation mix in the future, maybe even more so than they are today. Our PPL Nuclear Development initiative is another important element of our commitment to a systematic identification of growth opportunities that add value for our shareowners,” Miller said.

“Having worked with Vic on a number of projects over the past 20 years, I know he will be a great addition to PPL’s team. We also are very pleased that Bryce Shriver has agreed to stay on for a period to help in the transition,” said Miller.

Lopiano currently is vice president, American Centrifuge, for USEC Inc., a leading supplier of enriched uranium fuel for commercial nuclear power plants. In that position, he is responsible for deployment and commercial operations of USEC’s next-generation uranium enrichment technology, the American Centrifuge, including manufacturing of centrifuge machines by USEC’s suppliers.

He joined USEC in 1996 and was assigned to the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California, where he was the senior USEC manager responsible for the development of advanced laser-based enrichment technology. Beginning in 2000, he served as director, projects, in USEC’s corporate development department.

Prior to joining USEC, he held senior management positions with various business units of ABB, Inc. over an 11-year period including senior vice president, operations, ABB Environmental Systems; vice president, project services, ABB Power Plant Systems; and vice president, engineering and facility operations, ABB Resource Recovery Systems.

Lopiano previously worked for Burns and Roe, where he held positions of increasing responsibility in the engineering, procurement and construction of several power plants and cogeneration facilities.

He earned a bachelor of engineering in electrical engineering from Manhattan College and a master of engineering in nuclear engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Shriver came to PPL in 1999 as general manager of the Susquehanna nuclear plant. He was named vice president of operations in 2000 and became the company’s chief nuclear officer in 2002. He has served as president of PPL Generation since 2004. He came to PPL from the Tennessee Valley Authority’s Browns Ferry nuclear plant in Alabama.

PPL’s two existing nuclear units, totaling 2,360 megawatts, are owned jointly by PPL Susquehanna, LLC (90 percent) and Allegheny Electric Cooperative Inc. (10 percent), and are operated by PPL Susquehanna.

PPL Corporation, headquartered in Allentown, Pa., controls more than 11,000 megawatts of generating capacity in the United States, sells energy in key U.S. markets and delivers electricity to about 4 million customers in Pennsylvania and the United Kingdom.

JObit: Haring, Warren Sr. (MC1953)

Staten Island Advance (New York)
February 25, 2008 Monday
WARREN HARING, 87 Former executive officer of S.I. Borough Command enjoyed public service
BYLINE: MARK STEIN, STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE
SECTION: OBITS; Pg. A10

Date of Death: 02/23/2008 FDNY deputy chief treated others with respect Former FDNY Deputy Chief Warren Haring Sr., 87, of West Brighton, a man known for always treating others with respect during his 45 years on the job, died Saturday at home.

“He believed in serving the public,” said his son, FDNY Borough Commander Thomas Haring. “He taught by example.”

Born in the Bronx, Mr. Haring was brought to Staten Island in 1928, settling in West Brighton. He lived in Grant City for many years until returning to West Brighton in 1990.

He graduated from St. Peter’s Boys High School in 1937, and joined the Navy five years later. He served during World War II aboard a destroyer escort, the Melvin R. Nawman. From his ship, he witnessed the raising of the American flag on Mount Suribachi on Iwo Jima, his family said. He was honorably discharged in 1945 as a second-class torpedo man.

Mr. Haring joined the FDNY in 1947 and was appointed to Engine 153 in Stapleton. His desire to become a firefighter was triggered by his father’s career as a police officer during the Great Depression.

“He believed he was a city servant,” said his son, Thomas. “He believed he worked for us - all of us.”

Mr. Haring was promoted to lieutenant in December 1953 and to captain five years later. With the promotion, he was assigned to Staten Island’s Division 8.

In 1965, Mr. Haring became battalion chief, and eight years later, deputy chief. He became executive officer of the Staten Island Borough Command in 1976. He retired in 1988.

Mr. Haring earned a bachelor’s degree in political science from Manhattan College in 1953, and a master’s degree in education from Wagner College, Grymes Hill, in 1965.

His daughter, Kim McLaughlin, described Mr. Haring’s humor as “wry, sarcastic, comical.”

She noted that her father sent her funny and motivating letters while she was in college, one saying, It is my fondest hope that you will be able to use three syllable words in normal conversation when they top your crown with the tasseled cap.”

Mr. Haring treasured his relationship with his wife, the former Delores Lynch. The couple, married for almost 60 years, constantly supported one another.

“He was very grateful for the life he shared with his wife,” his daughter said. “He just thanked her the other day.”

The former deputy chief enjoyed skiing, playing tennis and golf, and gardening. He also enjoyed dancing and was a member of the Staten Island Ballroom Dancers. Mr. Haring took part in the Senior Olympics and enjoyed swimming.

Mr. Haring was a parishioner of St. Christopher’s R.C. Church, Grant City, and later of Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church, West Brighton.

Thomas Haring, along with his two brothers, Warren, Jr. and Robert, are all members of the FDNY. The borough commander considered his father’s experience “a great resource.” Thomas added, “It was a tremendous asset for me.”

In addition to his wife, Delores; sons, Thomas, Warren and Robert; and daughter, Kim, Mr. Haring is survived by another daughter, Ceil Andriola, and 13 grandchildren.

The funeral will be Thursday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Blessed Sacrament R.C. Church. Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Brighton.

Lili Monowitz, John Lampasona

SECTION: Section ST; Column 0; Society Desk; Pg. 14

Lili Dowd Monowitz and John Francis Lampasona were married on Saturday at Battery Gardens, a restaurant in New York. The Rev. David J. Robb, a Unitarian Universalist minister, officiated.

Mrs. Lampasona, 34, is a senior director of consumer marketing for the Sesame Workshop in New York, the nonprofit organization that supports ”Sesame Street” programming in this country and abroad. She is involved in licensing characters and the marketing of products like videos and DVDs. She graduated from Tulane.

She is the daughter of Joan and Morris Monowitz of New York. Her father retired as a director of purchasing for Revlon in New York.

Mr. Lampasona, 30, is an associate in New York with Standard & Poor’s structured finance group, for which he determines ratings on assets that are considered esoteric, like timber, time shares and insurance premiums. He graduated from Manhattan College and received an M.B.A. from Indiana University.

He is a son of Lougene and John Francis Lampasona of Plainview, N.Y. His mother is an office manager for a dentist in Plainview. His father is the assistant superintendent of the mechanical department for New York for New Jersey Transit Rail Operations.

The bride always hoped she would find love on Fire Island, where her parents have a house in Seaview purchased the year she was born. ”It is the place I love most in the world,” she said, ”and I wanted to meet someone.”

The couple met there, in an Ocean Beach bar over Labor Day weekend 2005. It was Mr. Lampasona’s first visit to the island.

Several weeks later they went out on their first date, at which Mr. Lampasona, then a corporate financial analyst with Pfizer, announced that he might be going to Dublin for work for six months.

”I went, ‘Oh, great, just my luck,’ ” Ms. Monowitz said. ”It was not a huge deal for me, but as our relationship grew, it became more and more of an issue. When he got the position and decided to go, we discussed whether to stay together during that time. We felt that if we made it through that, it was the real deal.”

She visited him once in Ireland and once in Paris, where they spent a long weekend together.

He returned to New York in July 2006 and the relationship thrived.

For the weekend of his 30th birthday party last March, he planned a large party with friends and relatives coming from all over the country.

”I decided to propose two days before that, so we could announce it at the party,” Mr. Lampasona said. But first, he was determined to get her parents’ permission. So on Thursday he left work early and went to their apartment on the Upper East Side.

”They were not expecting me, and I didn’t want them to call Lili and ask her why I was coming to see them,” he said. ”So I scooted into the building past the doorman and got into the elevator. On the way up, the doorman called the elevator man telling him to bring me back down because I was not expected. I pleaded with him to continue going up, and he agreed.”

He found the Monowitzes having cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. They did not seem a bit surprised to see him without their daughter and offered him a glass of wine.

”We sat there drinking shiraz and idly chatting,” he said. ”Finally, I couldn’t take it any more, so I stood up and said, ‘Look, I have an agenda. I am going to ask your daughter to marry me tonight, and I am here to get your permission.’ Her mom burst into tears and her dad clapped his hands together.”

Manhattan College Pipes & Drums Band To Make Special Appearance In Naples, Florida St. Patrick’s Day Parade On March 15

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – The Manhattan College Pipes & Drums, an award-winning college pipe band, will make a special appearance in the 30th annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Naples, Fla., on Saturday, March 15.

The appearance was made possible due in large part to the support and efforts of Jim Connors ’57, who was instrumental in planning the parade festivities and also helped to organize lodging and financial support for the group.

“I am very proud to play a part in this March celebration and remain in debt to the Manhattan College Pipes & Drums members who are making personal sacrifices and adjustments in their schedules in order to represent Manhattan College in a very public way,” says Connors, a resident of Bonita Springs, Fla.

The Pipes & Drums is quartered on the campus in the Riverdale section of the Bronx. The band was formed in 1981 under the guidance of Brother Kenneth Fitzgerald, F.S.C., and the musical training of Captain Robert Hogan ’82 of the Pipes & Drums of the New York Police Department’s Emerald Society. Pipes & Drums includes 30-40 pipers and drummers. John Carey ’56 is the moderator, while Michael Hogan ’91 serves as director.

“What makes the Manhattan College Pipes & Drums special is that it is comprised of students and alumni, a mix that separates us from other college bands, which are often all students,” says Thomas McCarthy ’06, who serves as pipe major, the lead musician for the band. “We are about 60 percent alumni and 40 percent students. The youngest person in the band is 17, and the oldest is 73. The band’s composition is representative of the great history of Manhattan College.”

The Manhattan College Pipes & Drums consists of a mix of current students, alumni and faculty. Members are trained in the fundamentals of bagpiping, drumming and marching. The band is well represented by first generation Irish Americans and welcomes all members of the College community, regardless of background. Their musical repertoire draws from the traditional airs and marches of Ireland, as well as from contemporary and traditional American selections.

The band makes regular appearances at a number of parades and social events in the New York metropolitan area, in addition to the annual march up Fifth Avenue on St. Patrick’s Day. It has performed in the Bunker Hill Day Parade in Boston, opened for the Mighty Mighty Bostones in Roseland Ballroom in New York City, played the Holiday Express Benefit Concert Christmas Spectacular at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J., and performed in consecutive years in Frank Patterson’s annual show held at Carnegie Hall.

Honored with numerous awards, the Pipes & Drums was one of the few American-based organizations to participate in the 1995 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin, Ireland, and has often earned first place for college pipe bands in several New York City St. Patrick’s Day parades.

Founded in 1853, Manhattan College is an independent, Catholic, coeducational institution of higher learning, offering more than 40 major programs of undergraduate study in the areas of arts, business, education, engineering and science, along with graduate programs in education and engineering. Weekend Trip!

Hello readers. family. strangers??…

Apparently last week’s post was spotted by a former Jasper. Not that internet/people hunting isn’t characteristic of a Manhattan Alumni. All of us Marshall’s dont have to try hard to picture Dad doing just that. (Bill Marshall ‘67 for all the odd ones) He quotes me and put a link to my post up on jasperjottings-daily.com. But hey, that’s cool. I like exposure.

[JR: “spotted by a former Jasper” Huh, does this fellow think that you stop being a Jasper when you graduate? Ahh, the interesting perspective of the young folks. So self-centered. He doesn’t even give us “link love” back. Oh well, the quote makes me feel like a “stalker”. As opposed to a “librarian”. Sigh!]

Seriously, why did I go to college? $28,000 a year to get a piece of paper that was worth a piece of crap. I should use it for toilet paper the next time we run out. Oh yeah, well I know how to “think” (I don’t) and I know how to write (I don’t)….bullshit. Corporate America wants the meat heads straight out of Business school. I should have known this at the first Manhattan College career fair I went too….300 companies for the School of Business and 10 for the School of Arts, and it was probably Katherine Kibbs Secretarial School, cause they knew we were worth shit.

Comment on JEMAIL: Fagan, Eugene [MC1950] finds Jasper Manning’s obit by TERRI L. MANNING

By TERRI L. MANNING

Eugene, I can indeed see your wonder. I shall explain; I am 60 years old. Kevin, 58. My daughter , Michelle, was born when I was 19, her son, Justin, was born when she was 16!! He is now 24 and little JJ is 16 months. Kev & I met when I was 40 and he took my children in as his own. We married when I was 45 & Kev was 43. Does that clear it up? Not exactly conventional, but a very close and loving family. Oh, by the way, that little Michelle put herself back in school and graduated from Lehigh University in Pa. when she was 34 yrs old with highest honors…you just never know about these kids!!! Jeanine is a Nationally Board Certified Elementary School school teacher in Pinellas County, Fl & Jeff works for Kev!

Would love to hear back from you to share stories with Kevin’s 86 yr old mother and Kevin’s employer & dear friend, Mike Bette, who is also a Manhattan Alumnus of significant stature.

Thanks for your interest. You’ve made me smile. T. Manning
