Jim Plunkett passes the ball to his daughter

Meghan Plunkett plays key role in marketing tailgate party condiments

by Megan Rawlins

***Begin Quote***

Children grow up, go to college, get jobs and move away. Former Raider and Stanford star quarterback Jim Plunkett of Atherton wasn’t too pleased with that last one.

In the spring, his daughter, Meghan Plunkett, graduated with a business and marketing degree from Manhattan College in New York, which she attended on a volleyball scholarship. Her dad was afraid she’d stay in New York.

So when his friend Steve Ferrari of Woodside came up with the idea of creating a line of tailgate-party condiments that would bear Jim Plunkett’s name, Mr. Plunkett agreed, acknowledging that his decision was something of a ploy to lure his daughter back to California with a position at the new company.

Back she came, and according to Mr. Plunkett, she’s been remarkably successful.

“It is amazing to see my daughter up there giving presentations and doing such a great job,” says the man who led the Raiders to two Super Bowl championships in his 15-year professional career. “Meghan basically runs the business; it is such a cool feeling.”

Ms. Plunkett is in charge of distribution of the products, and according to Mr. Ferrari, Mr. Plunkett’s business partner, she will soon be appointed vice president of the company, Ferrari Italia Food Products Inc.

“She began helping us negotiate the Raley’s contract and 7-Eleven contract,” says Mr. Ferrari. “She helped complete the mountain of necessary paper work to get into Raley’s 130-plus stores.”

Currently, she is working on a deal to distribute the products in Safeway stores.

Isaiah Thomas trades 2 players for a cardboard cutout of himself during his playing days in Detroit. Knicks owner Jim Dolan praises the move as the smartest decision since the Bulls drafted Michael Jordan.

Unfortunately, Knicks fans disagree and burn Madison Square Garden to the ground. The Knicks play the rest of their home games on the campus of Manhattan College. Only students who can show no apparent understanding of the game are allowed to attend.

Teacher profile

Name: Peter Barbella

Age: 55

Grades/Subject/School: Grades 10-12 mathematics, Newman Catholic High School in Wausau

Residence: Athens

Family: Wife, Trina; children, David, 22, and Lisa, 20

Education: Earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Manhattan College in New York and a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and secondary education from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Something readers should know: I enjoy reading, exercising, photography, socializing with family and friends.

What or who encouraged you to choose teaching as a career? The autonomy teachers have in their classrooms right from day one.

What have been your most satisfying moments in the classroom? Most students are respectful of the school setting. However, when you have a student who is not and you can get that student on your side and experience a change in behavior, that is when I most feel like I am making a difference.

What are you most looking forward to this school year? Every day, I have the opportunity to be a positive influence and bring enjoyment into the lives of more than 100 young adults. That’s a lot to look forward to each day, and I do.

What do you enjoy most about teaching? Watching students become more self-disciplined, more self-confident, more appreciative of the world around them during the course of the year, and having them enjoy themselves in the process.

FRANK B. FLOOD

Frank B. Flood, M.D. passed away unexpectedly on January 10, 2008.

Dr. Flood was raised in Forest Hills and Southampton, NY. He attended Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School and Manhattan College prior to receiving his medical degree from the Cornell University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in cardiology at New York Hospital, where he met his beloved wife, Noreen Healy, who was a registered nurse. On June 9, 1956 Frank and Noreen were married at St. Patrick’s Cathedral followed by a rooftop reception at the St. Moritz Hotel, overlooking Central Park. Dr. Flood served as a United States Army Captain Physician and was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas from 1957-1959. He was awarded the Medal for Meritorious Service. A highly respected, compassionate physician, Dr. Flood was the author of the Medical Resident’s Manual, and the Army Manual for Emergency Medicine. His research contributions were published in many professional journals, as well. Dr. Flood was an attending physician at St. Vincent’s Hospital, NY before becoming Chief of Cardiology at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers from 1962-1979.

He was physician to the Christian Brothers and the Sisters of Charity, a Catholic order founded by Elizabeth Ann Seton. In October, 1963, Dr. Flood’s 61 year old patient, Mr. Carl Kalin, lay in a coma with a rare brain disease. The Sisters of Charity in the entire New York Community prayed to their foundress, Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton, for his recovery. A relic, a sliver of her bone, was placed on Mr. Kalin’s body to reinforce their prayers. A few hours later he awoke. Dr. Flood certified his recovery was miraculous and that it was through the intercession of Mother Seton that his patient was cured. Dr. Flood and his family were present at the canonization of Mother Seton by Pope Paul VI on September 14, 1975 in Rome, making her the first native born United States citizen to be canonized. Her legacy is international.

Dr. Flood also maintained a private practice in cardiology/ internal medicine before retiring to Vero Beach, FL. Predeceased by his wife, Noreen, in 2002, Dr. Flood was a loving father to sons, Tim, Michael, Patrick, daughters Maura Flood, Deirdre Hackeling, Noreen Whitty, nine grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and his sister Joan. He will be missed dearly for his keen sense of humor, his sharp wit, and his deep love of life. A private memorial mass will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully requests donations be sent to Dobbs Ferry Community Hospital – Department of Nursing, 128 Ashford Avenue, Dobbs Ferry, NY 10522.

Bill Miller Day at The Armory

Published: 2008-01-11 14:11:38

BILL MILLER OF NEW YORK TIMES TO RECEIVE SECOND STAN SAPLIN SPORTS MEDIA AWARD SATURDAY (JAN. 19) AT ARMORY DURING NEW BALANCE GAMES

*** begin quote ***

New York, Jan. 14 – William J. (Bill) Miller, who started as a freelance sports reporter for The New York Times in 1947 and has been associated with the newspaper ever since, has been named the recipient of the second Stan Saplin Sports Media Award. The award, named for the late sportswriter, track and field historian, and publicist who died in 2002, will be presented Saturday (Jan. 19) during the New Balance Games at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory, where the Media Center is named for Saplin. The ceremony is set for 1 p.m.

Dr. Norbert Sander, President of the Armory Foundation, in making the announcement, said, “Bill Miller’s dedication and excellence as a lifetime reporter of the sport of track & field make him in many ways one of a kind, and we are honored to acknowledge his outstanding service.”

The Stan Saplin Sports Media Award is presented annually to a journalist, public relations professional, executive, filmmaker or broadcaster who has made a significant contribution to the promotion of the sport.

In 1947, Ray Kelly, the Times Sports Editor, offered Miller, who then was a junior at Manhattan College, a freelance reporter’s spot. Sixty-one years and nine sports editors later, he is still on the job.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE IN STORES FEBRUARY 5th, 2008 !

Celebrate Lunar New Year with

CHINA DOLLS

By Michelle Yu & Blossom Kan

(Paperback Release)

Celebrate Lunar New Year this February with the groundbreaking new novel China Dolls. Authentic, intelligent and witty, China Dolls is one of the first works of commercial fiction since The Joy Luck Club to explore the impact of culture on the personal and professional lives of Asian women in America today.

Examining what it means to be multicultural in the U.S., China Dolls explores life at the intersection of two worlds - one of Asian grandmothers and red envelopes, and another of tackling career and personal challenges in a big city. Not only are these women trying to combat prejudices in the workplace, but they also have to contend with stereotypes about Asian women as docile and submissive in the dating world - all the while trying to stay true to family expectations.

While the characters of M.J., Alex, and Lin won’t ever forget their Asian roots, they also don’t hide behind them as an excuse for their failures. If anything, they draw strength from their heritage while at the same time, embracing their “American” identity. Unlike other Asian novels, China Dolls embraces the fusion of these two cultures – a phenomenon that more often than not reflects the experiences of young Asians in America today.

I hope your New Year is going well. The Onondaga County Young Democrats are hosting an event Saturday at the Palace Theatre in Syracuse to bring young people with similar politics together and to give them a chance to bond with elected officials, according to Mitchell Patterson, 24, president of the group.

The local Democratic officials expected to be there include: Syracuse Mayor Matthew Driscoll; Assemblyman Bill Magnarelli, Syracuse; Assemblyman Al Stirpe, North Syracuse; County Legislators David Stott, Salina, 4th District, Thomas Buckel, Syracuse, 7th District; Bill Kinne, Syracuse, 15th District and Sam Laguzza, Syracuse, 16th District; Syracuse Common Councilors Michael Heagerty, 1st District, Lance Denno, 5th District and Councilor-at-Large Stephanie Miner. Members of the New York State Young Democrats Executive Committee are also expected to attend.

The Onondaga County Young Democrats formed about 10 years ago, according to Patterson, of Cicero, who also serves as the Democratic Machine Supervisor at the Board of Elections. Patterson said he revived the organization early last year after about two years of dormancy.

Why did you start the group back up? “I moved back to Syracuse from Riverdale, located in the Bronx. I worked for Senator Jeff Klein, Deputy Minority Leader. I was born and raised in Syracuse and I wanted to come home and try to get involved in politics. I majored in political science and history at Manhattan College in Riverdale.”

All appointments and re-appointments made by the Mayor were nominated by the Mayor’s Advisory Committee on the Judiciary. The Mayor’s Advisory Committee on the Judiciary nominates three candidates for each vacant judgeship, and the Mayor selects judges from among that group. For re-appointments, the Mayor’s Advisory Committee recommends whether or not to reappoint each judge, and the Mayor then decides whether to make the reappointment. All of the judges appointed and re-appointed have also been found qualified by the Judiciary Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. All nominations were reviewed by Deputy Mayor for Legal Affairs Carol Robles-Roman, Corporation Counsel Michael Cardozo and Criminal Justice Coordinator John Feinblatt.

Manhattan College Fêtes One of Its Own

Out & About

By AMANDA GORDON

The chairmen of Manhattan College’s De La Salle Medal Dinner distinguished themselves in the speech department at Wednesday’s event.

The retired chairman and chief executive of ConEdison, Eugene McGrath, said he’d considered altering his remarks after the event’s honoree, Frederic Salerno, ran him over with a golf cart on Sunday. But then he recalled a phrase he’d learned in his Catholic school days; “I had to write this out a few times once: ‘I will not let my animal instincts predominate over my spiritual faculties.’”

And so the 525 guests gathered in the Waldorf Astoria’s ballroom heard some nice things about the medal winner, the retired vice chairman and chief financial officer of Verizon, Mr. Salerno.

“No one could want a better friend,” Mr. McGrath said. “Just don’t play golf with him.”

The other dinner chairman, Mario Gabelli, had fun with the fact that he did not attend Manhattan College, a Lasallian Catholic private college in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, whose graduates include Mayor Giuliani and Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

Comment on JObit: Remembering Brother J. Stephen Sullivan by Joseph C. Oefelein [MC1957]

By Joseph C. Oefelein

I well remember Br. Stephen. He was my Home Room teacher through-out my four years at St. Peters Boys High School (Class of 1948) on Staten Island. He was an excellent teacher and in fact he influenced my life in ways that he didn’t know until I started to attend class reunions and talked to him as an equal. He and Br. Eugene were at every one of them . From his Latin courses, I learned the proper use of language and proper Engliish usage (it’s too bad that Latin is no longer taught in our schools). I got him to laugh one day when I showed him my freshman year translation of an old ‘Latin Student Lament’

Latina lingua est

Minime erat

Multi Romani interfecit

Et nunc me necat

(Latin is a language

At least it used to be

It killed many a Roman

And now it’s killing me)

To his Family:

Br. Stephen was a taskmaster, but somehow we loved him for this; he was strict (and we needed that) but he was always fair to fault. And by-the -way, if he said ‘pens down’ at the end of a quiz and you didn’t, he could hit your pen with a piece of chalk at 20 feet

I deeply regret our loss of such a great Man

Joe Oefelein, St Peters ‘48, Manhattan ‘57

Comment on JObit: Remembering Brother J. Stephen Sullivan by Michael J. McFadden [MC1973]

By Michael J. McFadden

I remember Brother Stephen well and warmly. I believe it was in 1970 that I and hundreds of other Jaspers were protesting the Vietnam war loudly and with spirit in the Quadrangle. A lot of kids had a lot of anger and weren’t being shy about expressing it. For some reason beyond my current memory a fair amount of that anger seemed to be directed at the college administration.

But Brother Stephen had the courage to come out and address us despite being met at first with a lot of jeers and boos. I forget what he said, but whatever it was it worked to make all of us protesters a bit more content that we weren’t alone in our feelings and feel like the college was our friend in the matter rather than our enemy.

He was also quite supportive of another passed member of our community, Dr. Tom Stonier, and myself and others as we created and brought the Peace Studies major through its birth pangs.

Rest and peace Brother Stephen.

Michael J. McFadden, 1973

John et al,

FYI Mr. Tahiraj was confirmed by Br. Robert Berger, VP for Student Life, and Colette Geary, our dean of students, as NOT being a student of Manhattan. The original story was printed in error.

Well, I’m glad we avoided the direct impact. But, it is still sad. And, if a few of our fellow Jaspers said a few prayers in error, then I’m sure that can all be sorted out.

Thanks for the update. Interesting how the press never goes back and says we made a mistake. I otoh get to say that a lot.

Comment on CARTOON: Senator Obama’s evasiveness about his Muslim upbringing by M.A. Musson

By M.A. Musson

?????? Obviously you are not an Obama supporter…………this cartoon certainly does not reflect any truth……………I don’t know what news you listen to, but the man has always been upfront about his youth…..even about his using drugs. He has talked about his Muslim childhood while in Africa on countless ocassions.

…………You’re not a racist are you?

Comment on CARTOON: Senator Obama’s evasiveness about his Muslim upbringing by reinkefj

By reinkefj

No, I’m not. I really don’t like any of the “empty suits”. With the exception of Ron Paul.

As far as the cartoon, I didn’t write it, but I know the fellow who did. He was expressing his view of the world and can see his point.

And with respect to Obama in particular, I think he’s unqualified for the Presidency. What has he done? Don’t get me wrong most of the candidates are unqualified.

In any event, thanks for the comment. And, if this email doesn’t bounce, I’ll even allow it to post.
