Imagine walking down the street and
finding a $100 bill. Wow, you say, this must be my lucky day. To take advantage
of this good fortune you decide to go to the race track. After reading the
racing sheet you place a bet in the 3rd race on the long shot ‘Never Wins’.
‘Never Wins’ has finished last in every race that he has run. Also in the race
is the favorite, ‘Always Wins’. ‘Always Wins’ has
finished in first place in every race that he has run. You still go ahead and
make the bet because you strongly believe that today ‘Never Wins’ will win. The
bet is made for $100 and the odds are 100 - 1, if he wins your payoff will be
$10,000.
It turns out that on this day a
number of other bettors feel the same way as you and they place the same
identical $100 bet that you did. The track executives while monitoring the
incoming bets notice the large size of ‘Never Wins’ bets but they do not change
the odds as they are so confident that history is on their side. After all
‘Never Wins’ never wins and ‘Always Wins’ always wins.

Dear John,
Tom is a member of the Class of 1978. He, like his
late father Tom, was very active in the selection committee of the Athletic
Hall of Fame Committee and a devoted Jasper Basketball fan (besides being a
good lawyer!).

Renaissance Man
George C. Loehr,
Management Consultant
*** begin quote ***
“Either Write Something Worth Reading or do Something
Worth Writing” were words of advice spoken by U.S. founding father Benjamin
Franklin. George Loehr, a self-employed management
consultant based in Albuquerque,
New Mexico, U.S.,
has accomplished both feats. During his 45-year career, Loehr
has not only made an indelible mark on the electric utility industry, he is
also a renowned photographer and a published author.
Raised in the middle-class
neighborhood of Queens Village, a borough of Queens, New York, U.S., Loehr
says his father pressed him from a young age to pursue a career in engineering.
“My dad was a very intelligent man, but he only had an eighth grade education,”
remembers Loehr. “When he read the The New York Times every Sunday, he noticed all the pages
of ads for engineers and the salaries they were making. So, he really
encouraged me to go into that.”
After attending a Jesuit high school,
where he was required to take four years of Latin, three years of classical
Greek and two years of French, the honors student found he was hungry for all
things related to math and science. “I had been smothered in liberal arts,”
says Loehr. “That, combined with my father’s
encouragement and the fact that I discovered if I studied engineering, I didn’t
have to take any languages, led me to enter Manhattan
College’s School of Engineering.”
Partway through his junior year of
college, Loehr’s father passed away unexpectedly. “I
realized then that my father had been pushing me toward engineering,” he says.
“I also started asking myself what the heck I was going to do with my degree.
At the same time, I had developed a fascination and taste for literature, and I
was writing serious poetry.”
According to Loehr,
he was elected editor of the school’s literary magazine — the first time in the
school’s history that an engineer had been chosen as head of the publication.
“So, I decided maybe I should be an English professor,” he says. “My strategy
was to finish school, take as many English courses as I could until I graduated,
find a job in engineering and at the same time start earning my master’s degree
in English.”
Staying true to his plan, Loehr completed college, was accepted into New York University’s graduate program and landed
a full-time job at Consolidated Edison (Con Edison) as an assistant engineer.
He earned his master’s degree in English literature in just two years by taking
night courses and began working toward his doctorate.

William J. Tangredi
Ph.D.
Tangredi, William J.,
Ph.D.
LOUDONVILLE William J. Tangredi, Ph.D., age 73, entered into eternal life Tuesday,
January 8, 2008 at home.
Born in the Bronx on May 2, 1934 to
Daniel V. and Mamie Rosetti Tangredi,
he graduated in 1955 from Manhattan College, B.S. chemistry in 1957 from Marquette University, M.S. chemistry, and in 1970
from R.P.I., Ph.D. He was professor emeritus of Siena College.
A recipient of a National Foundation of Science award, he enlisted in the U.S.
Army in 1957 and served for two years as specialist fourth class chemist at
Fort Detrick Labs in Frederick, Md.
He met his one and only sweetheart,
Rosalinda Carbonell at Marquette and got married in 1960. He was the
recipient of a National Science Foundation award and taught briefly at the
College of Notre Dame of Maryland, Baltimore. He later moved
to Schenectady
and worked at the R&D labs at General Electric. William realized that
teaching was his forte; he left GE and began teaching full-time at Siena College
in 1962. He moved his family to Loudonville, their home for the past 42 years.
A dedicated, energetic and enthusiastic teacher, his students fondly called him
the “little dynamo.” Rose, Dan, Paul and Teressa were
the love and main focus of his life. Bill has an incredible ear for music and
was an avid photographer. Equally versatile playing Brahms, Gershwin, Scott
Joplin and Fats Waller, he entertained his friends and colleagues at home on
numerous occasions. He was the main accompanist during the early years of the
Siena Men’s Glee Club. He was a former member of the faculty and curriculum
committees and junior board of instruction at Siena. The only sabbatical leave he took
during 34 years of teaching was spent advising the science department at the the School for the Deaf in Rome, N.Y.
He retired from Siena
in August 1996. Besides music and photography, he spent his time tending his
vegetable gardens in his backyard, and motoring yearly to the West Coast to
visit Teressa. He was a die-hard NY Yankee rooter all
his life. He was a past member of C.A.M.E.R.A. of Albany. He traveled
throughout the continental USA
to visit and photograph nature in our various National Parks.
Survived by
his wife of 47 years, Rose; sons, Daniel (Mich.)
and Paul (Tracey) (Niskayuna) and daughter, Teressa
(Joseph Toto) (Calif.);
six grandchildren, Amanda and Jacquelyn, Lynn, Anthony and Bruce, and Starla. Bill was predeceased by his brother,
Daniel Tangredi Jr. and his parents. The family wish to express gratitude for the excellent care
given by the staff of Rensselaer Community Hospice, especially to Carol V. and
Pat B. for their caring and personal attention to Bill. Also profuse thanks to
Fr. Farano and Fr. Walsh of St. Pius for their
friendship and just for being there at all times for us. Thanks also to his
physicians, Dr. Paul Lemanski and Dr. David Hart.
Funeral services will be held in the
Church of St. Pius X, Loudonville, Saturday, January 12, 2008 at 2:30 p.m. to
which relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Interment will
be private in St. Agnes Mausoleum in Menands. There
will be no calling hours. As Bill was a lifelong communicant of the Church of
St. Pius X, the family requests those desiring may send a remembrance in his
name to the Church of St. Pius X, 23
Crumitie Road, Loudonville,
NY 12211
or Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer,
NY 12144.

As a follow up to Allen’s murder, the

reports that the police apprehended the 17 year old, Nikko Colon, they believe
did the shooting. Another young life destroyed!

I was a career employee of the former
DPW now the DOT. In 1965 I took a highway drafting course taught by Gerry. He
recommended me for a vacant draftsman position which I later received. Gerry
was always patient and kind. He took the time to instruct me. He gave me the
opportunity to do design work. At 64, I am still using what he taught me. While
I went on to “bigger and better things”, to this day, I will fondly remember
him for his kindness, composure, and perfect gentlemanly manner. Please accept
my sincerest sympathies. Izzy

[JR: It interesting to see the
contributions our fellow alums have made on others. With or
without the diploma. Maybe it was the time down the hill that made him
what this fellow remembers. Or maybe what he was was
why he was there at all. Rest in peace.]

The Manhattan College
alumni community grieves at the loss of a leader. We are praying for our past
President and the family at this time. “Everyone knows”, but may
not be technically knowledgeable or adept at putting their thoughts here. The
Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach have
been told. We are all a little poorer now. “No man is an island,
entire of itself … any man’s death diminishes me”. We are sorry at the loss. He
led an institution that had a big impact on my life and so I feel in his debt
for the sacrifices he made to do that for us all.
