I’m planning some renovations for the new year. If there’s something you like, speak up to keep it. Also, if there’s something you hate, now’s a good time to get rid of it. (Other than me, that is. I need to be “replaced” but I don’t see any “volunteers” stepping up to the work. So, I guess you’re stuck with me. Like that Jack Nicholson character in “Frankly, I don’t give a …”, or was that Rhett B? Any way, I remain “your respectful chronicler of Jasper Achievement”, until replaced, you stop contributing news (which is sparse enough to assume you really have stopped), stop reading, or … … I can’ t do it any more.) |

The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own. You don’t blame them on your mother, the ecology, or the President. You realize that you control your own destiny. - Albert Ellis |

His Spanish is impressive as is his Italian and he has more than a grasp of Mandarin... but at the age of ten he's too young to even leave the country on his own. Arpan Sharma has astounded his teachers by learning to speak an incredible 10 languages on top of English. *** end quote *** Do we ever know the innate capability and value of every single human being? I won’t get on my soapbox! I’m sure that we can all see how valuable each person is. We have to ensure that everyone has the liberty to be “all they can be” as they see fit. We’re certainly not organized for that now. Hopefully, we can find a way to that “paradise”. ? |

Concerning: Semchyshyn, George Roman (MC1969) # - # - # November 26, 2007 My deepest condolences to all members of the Semchyshyn family on your heart-felt loss. I was a classmate
of George's for eight years at Manhattan Prep and George was a good student, with a positive study and work ethic. He was an excellent intramural athlete and one of the class weightlifters. George always saw the bright side and had a frequent smile beaming from his face topped with his long combed-over blonde hair. During our college days, George was part of a large group of '64 Prepsters (plus new college chums) who politely "commandeered" a set of tables in the College Thomas Hall cafeteria so that any time during the school day, one could always go to that set of tables and find several of the "guys" around to talk, complain, pontificate and discuss the state of the world in the tumultuous 1960's. George was a good guitar player, and we would have jam sessions with Ron Conti, Bob Van Buren and other friends, while I simulated an organ sound on my accordion (using an amplifier I bought from George). The late 1960's were also prime time for American muscle cars, and we all had our favorites. I can remember the gleam in George's eye when he came to campus in his new gold-colored 1968 Pontiac GTO with the tachometer encased in a small bubble on the hood! I will always remember the ride George gave me as he showcased "what the car could do"! As is so often the case, after college graduation the "gang" all went on their own ways. I was glad to read that in these intervening years George had the enduring gifts of mothers's love, the joy of a loving wife and family and the satisfaction of a successful business career. May God bless you all. Donald Wszolek ( {JR: Don is MP1964 & MC1968. And, as evidenced by the above, the generally acknowledged “smart guy” in the class. He hasn’t lost the ability to impress me.} # - # - # November 25, 2007 As George's classmate in the Prep, I am personally stunned. The On a personal note, George in high school was quiet fellow, always in with a joke, or even smile. And he did take some ribbing about that accent and name. But, I can honestly say, I never saw him mad or bad, which is saying a lot in an all guy school. In high school, he was pals with his running mate Vito T. They had a great skit where Vito would stand on his hands and George would mimic one of the "nut job teachers" giving Vito's feet a tongue lashing for "not looking him in the eyes like a man" as if the teacher didn't realize VT was upside down. Their act would have the class in tears. Vito too passed a few years ago. So I guess George is now with his old friend and entertaining new audiences with their act. Hope I get to see it. With Sadness. # - # - # {JR: This really rocked my world. I had some contact with him in the past few years. So, it wasn’t just a name. } |

http://www.eagletribune.com/punews/local_story_301115754 *** begin quote *** The primary message from lottery employees to winners is this: Get a lawyer. Bradley, of Sudden Money, would add another: Get a certified financial advisor. "You win, you're excited, you don't sleep for four days," she said. "You are sleep deprived by the time you decide how to take the money" - whether in annual payments or as a lump sum, if the choice is available. Some games, like the one Arcand won, don't have that option and must be taken as an annual payment. "Most people who win the lottery don't have lawyers, accountants or financial planners," she said. But quite often someone they know steps forward and acts as "the gatekeeper." Unfortunately, that person rarely has the necessary expertise to manage large amounts of money. "If you start off on the wrong foot, it's hard to catch up," she said. "The first six months are tough. People make commitments to themselves and other people." *** end quote *** Well, if you are “fortunate” enough to get something returned from the “stupidity tax” (i.e., it’s really a tax on typically poor people who are desperate to take a chance and are billing to turn a blind eye to the odds.
