FLASH! Important info received after the deadline

I’m planning some renovations for the new year. If there’s something you like, speak up to keep it. Also, if there’s something you hate, now’s a good time to get rid of it.

(Other than me, that is. I need to be “replaced” but I don’t see any “volunteers” stepping up to the work. So, I guess you’re stuck with me. Like that Jack Nicholson character in “Frankly, I don’t give a …”, or was that Rhett B? Any way, I remain “your respectful chronicler of Jasper Achievement”, until replaced, you stop contributing news (which is sparse enough to assume you really have stopped), stop reading, or … … I can’ t do it any more.)

Boy Wonder Can Speak 11 Languages

He speaks French with flair, rattles off German with ease and can hold a lengthy conversation in Swahili. His Spanish is impressive as is his Italian and he has more than a grasp of Mandarin... but at the age of ten he's too young to even leave the country on his own. Arpan Sharma has astounded his teachers by learning to speak an incredible 10 languages on top of English.

*** end quote ***

Do we ever know the innate capability and value of every single human being?

I won’t get on my soapbox! I’m sure that we can all see how valuable each person is. We have to ensure that everyone has the liberty to be “all they can be” as they see fit. We’re certainly not organized for that now. Hopefully, we can find a way to that “paradise”.

?

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Manhattan College To Honor Frederic V. Salerno ’65, Retired Vice Chairman And Chief Financial Officer Of Verizon, At Annual De La Salle Medal Fundraiser

De La Salle Medal Dinner is the College’s key annual fund-raising event

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Manhattan College will present Frederic V. Salerno ’65, retired vice chairman and chief financial officer of Verizon, with the De La Salle Medal at the College’s annual fundraising dinner on Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2008.

The ceremony will be held at The Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.

A native New Yorker, Salerno joined New York Telephone in 1965 and was elected vice president in 1983, when he directed the divestiture of the company from the Bell System. He was promoted to executive vice president and chief operating officer of New England Telephone in 1985. Two years later, Salerno became president and chief executive officer of New York Telephone.

In 1991, Salerno was appointed vice chairman of NYNEX, a position he held until the 1997 Bell Atlantic merger, which added chief financial officer to his title. When the Bell Atlantic/GTE merger formed Verizon, he was named vice chairman and chief financial officer of the new company. He remained in this position until his retirement in September 2002.

During his 37 years in the telecommunications industry, Salerno served as a lead negotiator in three of the most significant mergers in business history: the 1997 merger of Bell Atlantic and NYNEX; Bell Atlantic’s merger with GTE; and the union of the U.S. wireless assets of Bell Atlantic and Vodafone to make the country’s largest wireless provider, Verizon Wireless. He also directed Bell Atlantic’s successful efforts to realize the annual expense savings, capital efficiencies and revenue gains from the merger with NYNEX.

The De La Salle Medal Dinner remains the College’s top fundraising event. Proceeds from the $750-per-plate fundraiser are applied to academic and cocurricular programs, scholarship assistance and library resources. The black-tie event begins with a cocktail reception at 6:30 p.m., followed by dinner and dancing at 7:30 p.m. For more information about the De La Salle Medal Dinner, please call Stephen L. White, director of development at Manhattan College, at (718) 862-7548 or e-mail Stephen dot whitein care of manhattan dot edu.

The De La Salle Medal was established in 1951 in honor of John Baptist de La Salle, founder of the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and one of the world’s great educators. The Order founded Manhattan College in 1853. Since 1977, the De La Salle Medal has been conferred annually by the College’s board of trustees to honor executives who exemplify the principles of excellence and corporate leadership. Past recipients include New York Life Insurance Chief Executive Sy Sternberg, former Mayor of New York City Rudolph W. Giuliani ’65 and Con Edison Chairman Eugene R. McGrath ’63.

MNEWS: MC Prof Harry Stein does a study

***Begin Quote***

Daily Record (Morristown, New Jersey)
November 23, 2007 Friday
Rockaway Twp.: Don’t split kids
BYLINE: MATT MANOCHIO DAILY RECORD
SECTION: Pg. COMMUNITIES42

The Morris Hills Regional School District is waiting for the results of several parent focus groups before voting on a redistricting proposal that would send all Rockaway Township students to Morris Hills High School instead of splitting them among two campuses.

Now, those students are split between the regional district’s high schools — 839 at Morris Knolls High School and 504 at Morris Hills.

One scenario calls for all Rockaway Township students to attend Morris Hills, and for Wharton students to be moved to Morris Knolls.

District Business Administrator Manny Deus said the school board hired a consultant, Harry Stein, in June to conduct focus groups with parents from the district’s four sending towns — the Rockaways, Wharton and Denville.

{Extraneous Deleted}

Stein was hired on June 18 for $5,600 and recently completed the focus groups. The last took place on Nov. 14 at Thomas Jefferson School in Rockaway.

Stein, a history professor at City University of New York and Manhattan College, said on Monday that he completed the last of the forums for the capacity study, and will present his findings to schools Superintendent Ernest Palestis before January.

“Capacity is defined in two ways,” Stein said. “(It’s) the ability to carry out state-mandated programs, and the ability to carry out local, board-approved educational policies and programs.”

Stein said Palestis will decide whether to recommend action on Stein’s report.

{Extraneous Deleted}

Deus said he and other district administrators have kept their distance from Stein in order to let him conduct his surveys, and won’t make their feelings known about his findings until he delivers them to Palestis.

“We want to see what Harry (Stein) has to say first,” Deus said.

Concerning: Semchyshyn, George Roman (MC1969)

# - # - #

November 26, 2007

My deepest condolences to all members of the Semchyshyn family on your heart-felt loss. I was a classmate of George's for eight years at Manhattan Prep and Manhattan College. He and I shared the distinction of having teachers frequently stumble on the pronunciation and spelling of our Last names!

George was a good student, with a positive study and work ethic. He was an excellent intramural athlete and one of the class weightlifters. George always saw the bright side and had a frequent smile beaming from his face topped with his long combed-over blonde hair.

During our college days, George was part of a large group of '64 Prepsters (plus new college chums) who politely "commandeered" a set of tables in the College Thomas Hall cafeteria so that any time during the school day, one could always go to that set of tables and find several of the "guys" around to talk, complain, pontificate and discuss the state of the world in the tumultuous 1960's.

George was a good guitar player, and we would have jam sessions with Ron Conti, Bob Van Buren and other friends, while I simulated an organ sound on my accordion (using an amplifier I bought from George).

The late 1960's were also prime time for American muscle cars, and we all had our favorites. I can remember the gleam in George's eye when he came to campus in his new gold-colored 1968 Pontiac GTO with the tachometer encased in a small bubble on the hood! I will always remember the ride George gave me as he showcased "what the car could do"!

As is so often the case, after college graduation the "gang" all went on their own ways. I was glad to read that in these intervening years George had the enduring gifts of mothers's love, the joy of a loving wife and family and the satisfaction of a successful business career.

May God bless you all.

November 25, 2007

As George's classmate in the Prep, I am personally stunned.

The Manhattan College alumni community, as well as the small Manhattan Prep64 group, and the slightly larger Prepsters of all years group, all now share the grief, and is praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings, Prep64, and PrepstersAllYears communities that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island; entire of itself … any man’s death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.

On a personal note, George in high school was quiet fellow, always in with a joke, or even smile. And he did take some ribbing about that accent and name. But, I can honestly say, I never saw him mad or bad, which is saying a lot in an all guy school. In high school, he was pals with his running mate Vito T. They had a great skit where Vito would stand on his hands and George would mimic one of the "nut job teachers" giving Vito's feet a tongue lashing for "not looking him in the eyes like a man" as if the teacher didn't realize VT was upside down. Their act would have the class in tears.

Vito too passed a few years ago. So I guess George is now with his old friend and entertaining new audiences with their act. Hope I get to see it.

With Sadness.

Thanks for sending this.

For the pass ~3 years George and I have been meeting for coffee on Saturday mornings as part of a bible study/have a good time/solve the world’s problems.

I was able to visit him at the hospital the last few days and go the Funeral.

I will miss him very much!!

Thanks a bunch. I appreciate the heads up. I have forwarding this onto this rest of his old PowerCore team which is where we met.

I was always concerned about his health. It is too bad.

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

http://www.eagletribune.com/punews/local_story_301115754

*** begin quote ***

The primary message from lottery employees to winners is this: Get a lawyer.

Bradley, of Sudden Money, would add another: Get a certified financial advisor.

"You win, you're excited, you don't sleep for four days," she said. "You are sleep deprived by the time you decide how to take the money" - whether in annual payments or as a lump sum, if the choice is available. Some games, like the one Arcand won, don't have that option and must be taken as an annual payment.

"Most people who win the lottery don't have lawyers, accountants or financial planners," she said. But quite often someone they know steps forward and acts as "the gatekeeper." Unfortunately, that person rarely has the necessary expertise to manage large amounts of money.

"If you start off on the wrong foot, it's hard to catch up," she said. "The first six months are tough. People make commitments to themselves and other people."

*** end quote ***

Well, if you are “fortunate” enough to get something returned from the “stupidity tax” (i.e., it’s really a tax on typically poor people who are desperate to take a chance and are billing to turn a blind eye to the odds. Or are “smart people” who are too stupid to realize that they are making the gooferment the “big winner”!), then the first thing you should realize is that there is an ominous stat. A huge percentage of winners declare bankruptcy with in five years. So you need an advisor who’ll say “no” and watch the accountant and the lawyer like hawks. Call me; it’d be fun.

!?!

And that’s the last word.

Curmudgeon
