QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

In the beginning of a change, the patriot is a scarce man, and brave, and hated and scorned.  When his cause succeeds, the timid join him, for then it costs nothing to be a patriot.  ~Mark Twain, Notebook, 1935

EXHORTATION

Today’s Veterans Day.

As a vet, no one has to thank me for what I did. I did what I had to do.

What we should be looking at is (a) was every sacrifice absolutely necessary? (b) have we fulfilled our commitment to the boys and girls who did our dirty work? (c) did we learn our lessons from our mistakes? Sadly, I think we fall short on all three questions.

I’ve blogged about some things that I felt strongly about. http://tinyurl.com/2xjljs http://tinyurl.com/yrobh9 http://tinyurl.com/27pnww No sense repeating them here.

I don’t think we honor veterans! In fact, I’m ashamed at how we let our comrades-in-arms be treated.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Who’s the hottest teacher in the US?

Professor Robert Citino

Professor Robert Citino, the best university teacher in the US according to the RateMyProfessors.com poll

Of the 400,000 university and college teachers in the US. Who’s best? Who’s “hottest”? Who’s #1?

Ask no more. MTV gives us the answer. The music channel bought RateMyProfessors.com (RMP) earlier this year. As firstborn of that grotesque marriage, RMP has just issued its inaugural “Annual RateMyProfessors.com Top 50 Rankings”. Hold on to your mortarboards.

As RMP explains: “Millions of college students grade their professors on RateMyProfessors.com and for the first time, we’re using your great input to recognize those with the highest ratings! Now you can see who your peers have rated as the best and hottest professors in the country, and which schools love their professors the most. Don’t see any of your teachers on the lists? Then get to rating them right here on RateMyProfessors.com.”

I looked for my name: alas - not to be seen. Get to rating me, students.

If he hasn’t already peeked, the Muhammad Ali of profs, the queen of the academic parade, the fairy at the top of the academic tree, is - wait for it - Professor Robert Citino.

Prof Citino teaches history at Eastern Michigan University (EMU), and is a specialist in World War II military history. Judging by his students’ feedback cited by EMU, he is indeed an impressive classroom performer. But not, by RMP criteria, the hottest. The hotty accolade (or the “big chilli”, as RMP iconographs it) goes to Maria Disavino, a professor of chemistry at Manhattan College.

Manhattan College. Ever heard of it? I thought not.

What is striking is that none of the top 50 teachers, as reflected by RMP’s 10-million-strong electorate, is affiliated to an Ivy League establishment, or one of those snobby, vastly expensive institutions like Swarthmore, Haverford or Trinity which pride themselves on their teaching.

The New York version of LEAP is a rigorous academic program offered in partnership with Manhattan College in Riverdale, the Bronx. JEMAILXX: NYC Alumni Meeting
By Jasper John 68 on JEmail

http://jxymxu7sn5ho9d.googlepages.com/20071108_mc_nyc_meeting

Just a quick report about last night’s get together. Peter Quinn ‘69 was a hoot. He was charming, self-deprecating, and quite insightful (imho). He was quite frank about the Good, Bad and Ugly of Jaspers, Manhattan College, and the Christian Brother’s education.

I’m going to try to get the text of his remarks so I can pull out all the gems. Such as when he faked a book report and the good Brother AQ told him “Mister Quinn, you’re full of shit”. His life lesson from that was “you have to do the work”. And “I wish that Brother AQ was in many of the political meetings with me so he could have dispensed his wisdom to blow hards with fancy degrees.” And, “I never felt at a disadvantage with my Manhattan College education.”

He had the crowd in stitches as he described his “career of unsuccess”.

All in all, to me, it was worth the attention, time and cost.

Of special note, Jaspers are getting much better looking than when I was there.

Cheers,

fjohn68

p.s.: The next NYC meeting is April 10th. If the Intelligent Designer permits, I’m planning to go.

John,

Hope all is well, starting to finally cool off a bit here in Colorado.

I was thinking about you because I recently acquired a 1964 Manhatan College High School yearbook. It was interesting to see how all of the students had their home parishes next to their names, and to see which neighborhoods they came from. I got it for practically nothing on eBay and it’s in mint condition.

Also, I’ve recently communicated with a Christian Brother and MC grad who is on the Administration of Bethlehem University, located in Bethlehem, West Bank  www.bethlehem.edu . He was my old boss when I was an RA in DeLaSalle Hall.  Jottings readers might be interested to know that the Christian Brothers established Bethlehem University in 1973 in conjunction with the Vatican and the local Christian community of educators and community leaders. Bethlehem University is the only Catholic University in the Holy Land.

Finally, I tried emailing you about the birth of our son, Timothy, but the email was sent back in error. So now Lisa and I have 2 boys, Liam is 4 and a half, and Timothy is 16 months.

Regards,
Mark Boland ‘93

{JR: Well, you are really really going to have to get a better hobby. I assure you that I am no longer that sad soul in the yearbook; I’m a fat old sad soul. You’re reading my hobby. So get a better one quick! I am interested who’s yearbook you got. The Prep Class of 64 has had five deaths and is more than ½ unaccounted for. Is it inscribed in the front cover? That was a tradition. That, and having all your friends write in it. I think mine has three people who wrote in it – SteveT, JohnDuB deceased for many years, and my girlfriend at the time VB. Sad, that I even remember that. Times past. I am sorry you had email trouble. Too long ago to track down. I try to be available. You can always email now at anything @ reinke dot cc. Congrats on the fine family; they are truly your treasure. Now, I’m glad you reported in; but saddened thinking of friends, long lost. Back to editing!}

wow

Let me start this rant by saying that I am currently disgusted to call myself a member of the Manhattan College community. Tonight I attended a presentation on the Holocaust during which we were privileged to hear stories from the survivors. We are very likely the last generation to hear these accounts first hand, and I do not think people realize how blessed we are with that opportunity.

With that said, I must express my discontent and utter disgust with the Manhattan College student body. From the very beginning it was clear that students were only there to receive extra credit for their classes, as they were text messaging their friends while the survivors were speaking. To add to the blatantly disrespectful behavior of the students, several began to leave about half way through the presentations. I assume this is because they either (a) had received enough information to write their report, (b) realized it was past 9 on a Tuesday, and it was cutting into their drinking time, or even worse (c) both. I felt ashamed to be sitting amongst these people as more and more began to rise from their seats and leave through the side door.

My feelings of abhorrence only escalated when the Vice President of our school left as well. I could not believe my eyes. I was greatly appalled by such a ungracious act by someone of such authority over the students. What type of message does this send??

***End Quote***

Those who don’t learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. There is NOTHING quite so gripping as hearing first-hand about the Shoah from a survivor. For those who say it can’t happen here, think of the Japanese Internment. I have had that privilege and it changed my thinking.

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

*** begin quote ***

Veterans Day is largely intended to thank living veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served - not only those who died - have sacrificed and done their duty.

*** end quote ***

I’m upset that this “holiday” isn’t treated with the respect it deserves. Why should I be surprised! Look at how the returning vets are treated. The nation allows its politicians to put these brave men and women in harm’s way and then reneges on the moral compact made with them. Look at Walter Reed Hospital and get a good taste of what gooferment healthcare will be like under President Hillary. It’s a disgrace that these people are treated this way. And, we should hold EVERY politician accountable. There should be a national outcry. Instead we will let those politicians posture and pander. Where’s the moral outrage?

?

And that’s the last word.

Curmudgeon
