QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

‘An Educated man is the one who has so developed the faculties of his mind, so that he may acquire anything he wants, or its equivalent, without violating the rights of others.’ —— Napoleon Hill, the Author of “Think and Grow Rich”

EXHORTATION

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18736741

*** begin quote ***

TAMPA, Fla. - Deep-sea explorers said Friday they have hauled up what could be the richest sunken treasure ever discovered: hundreds of thousands of colonial-era silver and gold coins worth an estimated $500 million from a shipwreck in the Atlantic Ocean.

*** end quote ***

I don’t know about you but probably the second fantasy I remember ever having was when I was reading the Count of Monte Cristo and dreamed of finding a chest of gold. (First fantasy was that monopoly money was real. Little did I know that “real money” would become as worthless as “monopoly money” but I leave that topic for another day. As I will leave all subsequently later fantasies that took a decidedly different direction. But chest were involved.) I know that it’s supposed to be easier to get that proverbial camel through that “eye of the needle” gateway into the holy city, but it must be sure fun to try. Now I know my fellow alums have all the money they could ever need. Like the old joke, “I know I have had enough cause my Mom told me so”, the Universe gives us an abundance of what we focus on, so I have to be sure to focus on the important stuff – peace, abundance, and the supreme worth of every individual. My fellow alums probably don’t need the reminder, but I do. But every once and a while stories like this come along and distract me from my “prayers”. Donna nobis pacem.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Ernest Tsivoglou

ERNEST C. TSIVOGLOU Loving, loyal father, faithful husband, renowned scientist and teacher, Dr. Ernest C. Tsivoglou of Atlanta passed away Monday, at age 85; at Emory Hospital following a heart attack early last week.

Born in 1922 in New Hampshire, Dr. Tsivoglou grew up in New York City during the Depression. Following graduation from Manhattan College he enlisted to serve in the US Army Corps of Engineers in January 1944. Arriving at Bombay, India in June 1944 after a two-month voyage from Long Beach, he was attached to the 30th Station Hospital CBI Theater as Water Supply Engineer and later was Chief Warehouseman at the East India Medical Depot in Calcutta. Upon his Honorable Discharge in 1946, he attended the University of Minnesota where he earned his Master’s degree in Sanitary Engineering; more importantly, that is where he met and married his wife of 59 years, Julaine.

He then accepted a commission as Sanitary Engineer in the US Public Health Service at the Taft Center in Cincinnati. Shortly after his arrival there, he was offered an opportunity to attend Ohio State University where he obtained a doctorate in Nuclear Physics. He thus became one of the nation’s first radiological safety specialists independent of the Navy’s Admiral Hyman Rickover and the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission. His doctoral research on ventilation of radon gas from uranium mines in the desert southwest remains one of the foremost advances in improved working conditions for uranium mine workers worldwide.

Once back at the Taft Center in Cincinnati, he quickly rose to become Director of Technical Services and Research. There, from the early 1950s until his retirement in 1966, he and his staff were instrumental in development of many of the standards and methods that formed the basis of the nation’s first water pollution control regulations. Beginning with the stream studies needed to clean up pollution of rivers by uranium mills, the research work of Dr. Tsivoglou and the Taft Center in natural river self-purification processes forms the practical basis upon which the health of rivers and lakes in the U.S and elsewhere is measured, assessed, and improved.

Leaving the PHS in 1966, Dr. Tsivoglou accepted a professorship to teach sanitary engineering and river self-purification processes at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta where he remained until 1974. He is remembered by his students and colleagues in Georgia for his technical clarity, professionalism and great integrity, and his pragmatic wisdom and counsel. For the City of Atlanta, DeKalb County, and the State of Georgia, he and his teams of graduate students performed the first stream self-purification studies of the Chattahoochee River through the metro Atlanta area. Those studies determined and set the limits to which the metro cities, counties and industries could discharge treated wastewaters to the Chattahoochee and South Rivers during drought conditions such as exist today.

He continued to practice as a consulting engineer until his retirement in the early 1980s.

His recreational interests included trout fishing, woodworking and the American Southwest, particularly the books of Tony Hillerman.

Dr. Tsivoglou is survived by his wife Julaine, children Stephanie, Peter and Andrew, and grandchildren Laura, Charlotte, Alison and Andrew. The last surviving member of his family, he was preceded in death by his father, Constantine Jordan Tsivoglou of Constantinople (Istanbul), Turkey, his mother Lucinda Stearns Tsivoglou of Boston, his sister Helena Spencer of Asheville, North Carolina and brother Jordan Constantine Tsivoglou of Newport News, Virginia.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday October 27th at 11am at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Decatur. Interment will be in the Georgia National Cemetery in Forsyth County on Monday October 29th at 11am. Donations, in lieu of flowers, to the Diabetes Foundation would be very much appreciated.

Patent attorney, inventor James J. Maune dies

(Newsday (Melville, NY) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Oct. 28–James J. Maune, a retired patent attorney with a flair for invention who had been a senior partner of the Baker Botts Llp firm in New York City, died Oct. 18 at his Plainview home.

Maune, who also was a professor of patent law at Hofstra University from 1989 to 1994, died of a heart arrhythmia, family members said. He was 64.

He held several patents, including one for a specialty antenna and microchip system that could determine the position of a football on the playing field, said one of his sons, James Maune Jr. of Bristow, Va.

“He was extremely humble, and knew a little bit about everything,” his son said.

Maune was born Dec. 10, 1942, in Jackson Heights, Queens. After attending St. Agnes Boys High School in the city, he earned a bachelor’s degree in physics from Manhattan College in 1964 and a master’s degree in electrophysics from Polytechnic Institute in Brooklyn in 1968.

Maune worked as a development engineer for Wheeler Labs in Great Neck, as an engineer for Sedco Systems in Farmingdale, and as a senior development engineer for Hazeltine Corp. in Greenlawn.

In 1976, he graduated cum laude from St. John’s University School of Law. Maune became a lawyer because engineers were being being laid off in the early 1970s, his son James said.

He went on to become a partner in the law firm of Brumbaugh, Graves, Donohue & Raymond in the city, and then a senior partner at Baker Botts Llp.

Maune was an avid fisherman and hunter.

He was an active member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Plainview and a founding member of the St. Pius X Parish Knights of Columbus chapter.

In addition to his son James, he is survived by his wife of 42 years, Audrey; son Daniel Maune, of Poughquag; daughters Tara Bassette, of Glastonbury, Conn., and Tricia Habas, of Nanuet; his mother, Catherine Becker, of Golden, Colo.; a sister, Catherine Ferrere, also of Golden; and eight grandchildren.

Burial was in St. Charles Cemetery in East Farmingdale.

Donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude’s Place, Memphis, TN 38105.

Labrot, McGrath vie for Town Clerk
By: Glenn Shafer, Staff Writer
10/25/2007

***Begin Quote***

West Hartford Town Clerk Norma Cronin is stepping down this year, opening up the race for the Town Clerk position. Two candidates, Republican Theresa McGrath and Democrat Essie Labrot, are facing off for the job.

Unlike the other elected offices in town, the Town Clerk position is unique in that the winner becomes a town employee with a salary and benefits. There have been only nine Town Clerks in the history of West Hartford. Overseeing five employees in the office and in many ways serving as the face of the town, the Town Clerk’s office generates over $2 million in revenue for the town.

Labrot moved to West Hartford in 1980. She was raised in Easthampton, Mass., graduating from UMass with a degree in marketing communications in 1978. When she moved to West Hartford, she was managing a store at Westfarms mall. Labrot made a career switch into Human Resources when she was hired by Connecticut National Bank and later, Aetna. Currently, she is a corporate recruiter working on a project for the West Hartford accounting firm, Blum Shapiro.

Her campaign for the Town Clerk position is her first run at elected office after 15 years of actively campaigning for other Democratic candidates, local, statewide, and national. Labrot has been a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. Policy wise, she is most interested in educational issues.

Labrot said her skill set is a combination of her business, operations, community, and not-for-profit experience. She said the Town Clerk position is not political but does require an extensive knowledge of politics in reporting to the state campaign donations. She said her experience with absentee ballots, serving as a moderator, justice of the peace, and treasurer of political campaigns, is valuable hands-on experience that qualifies to become West Hartford’s next Town Clerk.

“I’m not necessarily a policy person,” she said. “I’m much more of a process person. People need to look at experience because whoever takes Norma’s place will have to hit the ground running since we have a presidential primary coming.”

Theresa McGrath moved to West Hartford six years ago. She was raised in the Bronx, graduating from both Manhattan College and Johnson and Wales in Providence. McGrath is probably best known in town as the president of the West Hartford Taxpayers Association, a group that garnered enough signatures this year to force a budget referendum. McGrath has worked in catering and other jobs as a stay-at-home mother. With a special needs child, she became an advocate and lobbyist for other parents, ultimately founding the Alliance for Children in Education.

As a candidate for Town Clerk, McGrath also brings together many skills. She said her ability to read state statutes is vital to the job when working with campaign finance laws. She said her administrative skills, leadership skills, and executive level experience leading the West Hartford Taxpayers Association will also be invaluable.

Most of all, McGrath said, she is not beholden to a political party and will help those seeking information from the town. She wants to make information such as Town Council meeting minutes available to residents on the town’s Web site.

“We need to make the process of government more open for people doing their research,” she said. “My opponent is partisan and a well-connected person politically. She has aligned herself with one party. I have been an advocate for issues. It is vital that the Town Clerk is non-partisan. The Town Clerk doesn’t answer to the town or the majority party.”

District 11 will have new face on Legislature
BYLINE: Sarah Netter
SECTION: NEWS; Pg. 4A

This year’s election is only the second time in the history of the Rockland Legislature that the District 11 seat is guaranteed to go to a challenger.

With longtime Legislator Theodore Dusanenko, R-Valley Cottage, not seeking re-election, voters will choose from three candidates who have never served on the Legislature: former Clarkstown Town Board member Ann Marie Smith, local business owner Frank Sparaco and John Mangan Jr., who already has run twice for the seat.

The candidates have said they’re concerned about preserving the district’s community and lightening the load for taxpayers.

{Extraneous Deleted}

Mangan also listed road improvements as a priority as well as drainage projects. On the latter, Mangan said he’d work with town officials to get projects started so residents wouldn’t have continued flooding problems.

When it comes to cutting county expenses, each had a different idea of how to save taxpayer dollars.

Mangan suggested freezing executive and legislator salaries and controlling the amount of overtime paid to county employees. Even smaller efforts would help, he said, such as ensuring lights are turned off in empty rooms.

{Extraneous Deleted}

The district includes Congers and part of Valley Cottage. The term is for four years, and the current annual salary is $32,587.

Bongiorno, Zugibe fight for Rockland district attorney post
BYLINE: Steve Lieberman
SECTION: NEWS; Pg. 8A

Rockland District Attorney Michael Bongiorno and Thomas Zugibe don’t agree on much as they wind down their testy campaign for the county’s top prosecutor’s job.

Bongiorno cites statistics showing how his emphasis on drug dealers, violent offenders and repeat felons has produced record-low crime levels, increased indictments and tougher prison sentences.

Zugibe tries punching holes in his opponent’s 12-year record and contends he can do better at reducing crime. He calls Bongiorno’s office “dysfunctional,” saying crime-prevention programs and corruption investigations exist more on paper than on the streets. He says plea-bargaining is overused to boost conviction numbers.

Bongiorno counters that Zugibe is out of touch, since he hasn’t prosecuted a case in more than two decades, and now distorts the facts. Bongiorno says his office’s investigations are known to the public and when it comes to negotiated pleas, judges have the final word and his office sometimes agrees and sometimes it doesn’t.

Why running for office: I am running for re-election as Town Supervisor because I have deep and abiding love for the community I grew up in. This beautiful Town has been good to me. But I believe that, unless we do our best to be good stewards, what we know and love about Warwick can be lost to overdevelopment, sprawl, high taxation and a general decline in our quality of life.
When I took office I pledged to: 1: keep town taxes as low as possible; 2. limit growth to a rate we can absorb; 3. improve our infrastructure; 4. give the best individual constituent service to each taxpayer and resident without regard to party affiliation; 5. improve access to facilities and programs for our seniors and our youth; 6. provide a better system of public transportation for environmental reasons as well as for those who can’t drive; 7. to provide the best trained police force so that we can meet any challenge in a post – 9/11 world. I believe together we have made long strides toward accomplishing those goals. I invite you to visit my web site – www.electsweeton.com – for details.
But, we (you and I) are not finished. And, I would like the opportunity to continue to lead our community for another four years to complete what we have started. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you.

Henry Petroski

Most Duke students don’t give much thought to toothpicks unless they’re plucking a poppy seed from their teeth after a bagel at Alpine Bagels.

But Henry Petroski, Aleksander S. Vesic professor of civil engineering, said he believes it is important for people to understand the everyday objects that surround them-toothpicks included.

“Everything is designed and manufactured and sold to us,” said Petroski, who is also a professor of history. “By being able to look critically at those things, we’re better able to understand and appreciate them in a number of ways.”

Petroski discussed the toothpick and its scientific and social evolution in “The Toothpick: Technology and Culture,” a book published Oct. 16 by Knopf. He has made a career out of explaining the significance of run-of-the mill tools in the 12 books he has authored, all of which have been published since he came to Duke in 1980. Other titles include “The Pencil: A History of Design and Circumstance” and “The Evolution of Useful Things.”

Writing has long been a passion of Petroski’s. He said he discovered the interest as an undergraduate at Manhattan College and began to write “recreationally” in graduate school.

Cantini’s art beautifies Pitt

A star quarterback in high school, Cantini said he received 16 scholarships, including one to study art at Carnegie Tech, now Carnegie Mellon University. But at the time, Carnegie Tech was struggling financially, and in the summer before his freshman year, Cantini was told the school could no longer offer him the scholarship.

He went to Manhattan College for its proximity to New York galleries, but the college offered no art classes. Carnegie Tech later offered to pay for Cantini’s tuition without room and board, and he transferred.

On the weekends, Cantini worked in a steel mill to pay for his housing costs.

During his sophomore year at Carnegie Tech, Cantini volunteered to fight in World War II. He said most of his classmates were sold the idea that the war would be over in a few months, and it would enable them to travel all over Europe in the process.

Thanks for the correction. I'm always amazed that someone actual takes the time to read this material. It would be nice if it was even correct.

Keep "us" apprised of your "doings". Many of our older fellow alum live vicariously. :-)  And, besides, if there was no "news", I'd have nothing to "collect".

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

http://www.lotterypost.com/news/163104

*** begin quote ***

Tennessee Lottery oversight committee to convene in November

A software coding error kept duplicate numbers from being drawn in the two games after the lottery switched July 28 from a system where balls pop up with the winning numbers to a system using a computer to generate random numbers. So players who picked numbers like 4-6-6 for Cash 3 or 9-9-7-9 for Cash 4 had no chance of winning.

*** end quote ***

As opposed to the poor souls who played the other numbers and have no chance of winning in the long run.

Special place in hell for those bureaucrats and komisars who finance the state on the backs of the poor and ignorant.

What gives the State the right to monopolize this or any other activity? If I can’t do it and they derive their powers from me, then how can they do it? The free market place in gambling would give the people the best deal.

The only fair thing to do is to revert from the Gooferment as our ruler back to the Gooferment as our servant. Maybe in my lifetime?

!

And that’s the last word.

Curmudgeon
