Landing in The Fields of Athenry
by Gary Hetzler (garyhetzler in care of eircom.net)

*** begin quote ***

While the American officers were having a leisurely dinner in Athenry, the Irish government was busy making far-reaching decisions. They would allow these men to be repatriated and arrangements were already being made to escort them to Northern Ireland (Cluntoe). The rationale was that the plane, although a 'Fortress', had been altered to make it purely a self-defensive weapon. The German consulate, once they heard who was on board, raised holy hell. That didn't affect this particular decision, but other American planes and their crews would receive a different Irish response for a while.

But this time, the Irish-American connection was celebrated and posed pictures taken in front of Athenry's Railway Hotel. And that's what I think about most every time, as I stand and wait for the Galway to Dublin train, here amidst the fields of Athenry.

*** end quote ***

For some reason this story just tugs at the heartstrings.

One never knows what little bit of fascinating history is before our eyes if we only had a little bit of awareness.

I know my fellow alums are much more aware than I, but I’ll try a little harder this week to be “perceptive”. Un injineers do much better at “measuring”!

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Manhattan College Names Ellen Kiernan As Director Of Alumni Relations

RIVERDALE, N.Y.Manhattan College has named Ellen Kiernan as its new director of alumni relations, effective Oct. 9, 2007.

Kiernan joins Manhattan College from John Jay College of Criminal Justice, where she served as director of alumni relations. She has spent her entire professional career in higher education administration, including positions at New York University (NYU), SUNY Stony Brook, Long Island University and Adelphi University.

Manhattan College is a remarkable institution with a great story to tell,” Kiernan says. “I look forward to discovering its rich history through the dedicated alumni, faculty and students who have made Manhattan their alma mater.”

While at John Jay College, Kiernan engaged a community of 26,000 alumni through segmented outreach and communication initiatives, and organized regional chapters to link nationwide alumni. She also identified and cultivated affinity groups for initiating designated scholarships and created John Jay’s first endowed Alumni Association Scholarship.

In her role as alumni outreach coordinator for NYU’s College of Arts and Science, Kiernan served as the primary contact for a constituency of more than 140,000 alumni.

Kiernan is the first woman to hold the position of alumni director at Manhattan College, which became a coeducational institution in 1974.

A resident of New Canaan, Conn., Kiernan is a member of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) and an active volunteer for United Way/NYU Community Fund, Habitat for Humanity, New Canaan Food Bank, and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Top Manhattan College Students Inducted Into Prestigious Epsilon Sigma Pi Honor Society

RIVERDALE, N.Y.Manhattan College recently inducted its top students into Epsilon Sigma Pi, the oldest college-wide honor society. Students, mainly seniors, were recognized for their academic achievement during the College’s annual Fall Honors Convocation, held on Sunday, Oct. 14 in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers.

Membership in Epsilon Sigma Pi is considered the highest scholastic honor that can be earned by a Manhattan College student. Only students who have earned a 3.5 average (on a 4.0 scale) for six consecutive semesters with no academic failures are inducted into Epsilon Sigma Pi. Students who have achieved this status typically are inducted in the beginning of their senior year.

During the ceremony, an honorary Doctor of Science was awarded to alumnus George J. Galasso `54, former associate director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and former executive director of the Foundation for NIH Research.

In his acceptance speech, Galasso challenged the students to seek out risk and embrace the opportunities they are given during their careers.

“You may make some mistakes, but learn from them and go on. Find out what you really enjoy doing and pursue it to the fullest,” he said. “Whatever you do, wherever you go, have confidence in yourselves, work energetically to make a positive personal impact to help improve the human condition, and in so doing reap the ultimate satisfaction.”

Galasso became associate professor of microbiology in 1964 at the University of Virginia Medical School, where he conducted research and taught virology. Four years later, he was accepted into the grants associates program of the NIH, a highly selective training program for health science administrators, and began his career as an administrator of scientific programs.

In 1969, Galasso was asked to initiate an antiviral research program for the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. He also was a leader in the interferon clinical trials and showed the efficacy of interferon in hepatitis, which led to its use against cancer. Appointed chief of the infectious diseases branch in 1973 with responsibility for development of vaccines and antivirals to combat all infectious diseases, Galasso later served as associate director for extramural programs of the NIH. He is the author of nearly 100 scientific articles and reviews.

Founded in 1853, Manhattan College is an independent, Catholic, coeducational institution of higher learning offering more than 40 major programs of undergraduate study in the areas of arts, business, education, engineering and science, along with graduate programs in education and engineering. He is survived by his loving wife of over 51 years, Jean Frances (Roy), originally of Bronx, New York; his four children, Jane Maliszewski Herr (Douglas) of Alexandria, Virginia, Roy Maliszewski (Anna) of Garnerville, New York, Jo Ann Grubic (Walter) of Alexandria, Ohio, and Suzanne Maliszewski of Akron, Ohio; four grandchildren, Sandy, Gabrielle, Stephen, Timothy; and his brother, John Maliszewski of Seminole, Florida.

Ray was born in Yonkers, NY to Edna and Charles Maliszewski on August 25, 1934, and attended St. Casmir School in Yonkers and Cardinal Hayes High School in Bronx, NY. A musician and band leader of “Ray Malis and the Moon Mists” in his youth and through college, he was an avid supporter of both the Columbus Jazz Orchestra and the Columbus Symphony Orchestra later in life.

He graduated from Manhattan College in 1956 with a degree in Electrical Engineering and began his long career with American Electric Power as an assistant engineer in 1956. He lived in Yonkers, NY and Park Ridge, NJ. When AEP relocated its headquarters from NYC to Ohio, Ray and Jean moved to Columbus in 1980. Ray retired as Senior Vice President-System Planning in 1998, after 42 years with AEP.

He was just as busy and energetic in retirement as he had been during his work years, with an active schedule of golf, travel, reading, social and cultural events with his close network of friends and his lifelong hobby, fine woodworking. He was actively engaged in many aspects of the electric industry, both national and global, He is a Life Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

During his career, he was extensively involved in leading, advising and serving the electric transmission industry with the International Conference on Large High Voltage Electric Systems (CIGRE), and the Edison Electric Institute (EEI), where he chaired the System Planning Committee. He also chaired the East Central Area Reliability (ECAR) Coordination Review Committee, and the Engineering Committee of the North American Electric Reliability Council (NERC), where he represented the ECAR. He was also a member of the National Governor’s Association; the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Technical Assessment; and the ECAR Executive Board. He led efforts by AEP and neighboring utilities to form an Independent System Operator (ISO).

Ray received a Master’s degree in operations research from New York University and attended the Sloan School senior executive program at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the General Electric power systems engineering course. The AEP Orange Transmission Station in Lewis Center, Ohio, completed in 2001, was recently re-named and dedicated as the Raymond M. Maliszewski Transmission Station.

The family will receive friends on Sunday, October 21st from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at SCHOEDINGER WORTHINGTON CHAPEL, 6699 N. High Street, Worthington, OH 43085, 614-848-6699. Early Learning Coalition picks new leader
The Pasco-Hernando group extends an offer to the executive director of a New Jersey nonprofit.

NEW PORT RICHEY - If all goes as planned, a former New Jersey school superintendent who now works to provide guardians to incapacitated adults will become the new chief of the agency that oversees programs serving children in Pasco and Hernando counties.

James J. Farrelly, 57, has been offered the job as executive director of the Pasco Hernando Early Learning Coalition.

“You’ll be happy to hear and we’re happy to report that we have reached an agreement in principle to hire a new executive director,” coalition vice chairman Jim Cook told the board at its meeting Thursday.

The appointment is conditional upon Farrelly undergoing a background check and signing a written offer, Cook said. Farrelly also has asked first to visit the area and meet with coalition staff. He is expected to do that the week of Oct. 29.

“I look forward to the opportunity of working cooperatively with the ELC’s highly committed Board of Directors, its energetic and knowledgeable staff, and the many caring human services agencies located within the coalition,” Farrelly told the St. Petersburg Times in an e-mail. “Most importantly, I am excited about the prospect of working alongside parents and other interested community members in Pasco and Hernando counties.”

Since 2003, Farrelly has been executive director of Volunteer Guardianship One-On-One, a nonprofit agency that provides court-appointed guardianship services in Flemington, N.J.

Before that, he worked from 1995 to 2003 as a consultant to public school districts.

From 1991 to 2001, he was superintendent of Central Regional Public Schools, where he led three schools with a total of 2,000 students and 350 staffers, and managed a $35-million operating budget.

He also served in other school administrative positions and spent two years teaching in New York City public schools.

According to his resume, Farrelly earned his undergraduate degree in secondary education/history from Manhattan College in New York City in 1974, his master’s degree in educational psychology from the College of New Rochelle New Rochelle, N.Y. in 1976, and completed course requirements for the doctoral degree in educational psychology and educational Administration, from Rutgers University in 1986.

Farrelly, who board members agreed to offer a $70,000 salary, was among more than 80 applicants for the job. A committee narrowed that to seven finalists; six of those showed up for interviews.

Farrelly, if he is ultimately approved for the job, would be the third director since the two counties merged their coalitions in 2005.

October 16, 2007 — Journalism students at Manhattan College have their first exposé: what they charge is a bait-and-switch scam at their Riverdale school.

Many say they chose the Catholic school because of its full communications curriculum. But now its nearly 50 course offerings will be halved next school year - after a partnership ended with the College of Mount St. Vincent.

“My grandpa went to Manhattan. My uncle went to Manhattan,” said aspiring TV anchor Jessica Zimmerman, a sophomore who’s transferring to Stony Brook University.

“I thought it was a perfect fit,” said aspiring TV anchor Jessica Zimmerman, who’s transferring to Stony Brook University.

Manhattan College’s director of college relations, Lydia Gray, said in a statement, “Manhattan is in the process of fine-tuning a dynamic communications curriculum that will launch in the fall of ‘08 and is currently building a state-of-the-art studio as well as hiring faculty.”

ADMINISTRIVIA: Some light at the end of the tunnel for @alumni.manhattan.edu addresses

By {privacy invoked}

DON’T QUOTE ME, BUT … …

Last night, at the Manhattan College Information Technology Board of Advisors meeting, I found out that the responsibility for “alumni systems” has been transferred to the “regular” IT group.

No longer will rogue IT uses be permitted on essential MC systems. (Duh!)

So, what does that mean?

The ability to get new, and change old, @alum.manhattan.edu addresses has been tied to limitations in the “alumni systems”. I’ve been griping about that at literally every opportunity for my fellow alums (i.e., I have mine and it still works).

Relief should be available right after the holidays.

The professional IT folks confided that it should be fixed shortly after EOY07. (They need a dead spot in the schedule to slip in some new code. Understandable.) Considering the pro’s track record, <<they are great imho>>, I feel that it’s going to happen.

So a little more patience. That’s the cavalry bugle over the hill. Help is on the way.

More when I get it. But don’t quote me!

GMD75: imho I'd say we objectified them. It's the Playboy effect. Changed them from the Intelligent Designer's gift to men, and visa versa, into a dirty joke. Look at all the inet porn. The coarsening of society isn't sophistication, but a lack of respect for essential humanity. Every human has to be free enough to accomplish their dreams. Instead we stuff women in boxes (i.e., models have to be thin). Men have to be Adonis! Instead of valuing everyone, "we" as a society turn them in superficial objects to "service" our worst impulses. It's sad. fjohn68

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

They believe we need a different kind of government now, an Executive government essentially, rule by decree, which is what we’re getting with signing statements. Signing statements are talked about as line-item vetoes which is one [way] of describing them which are unconstitutional in themselves, but in other ways are just saying the president says “I decide what I enforce. I decide what the law is. I legislate.”

*** end quote ***

Yup, “we the people” have fallen asleep at the switch. In the belief that “it cn’t happen here”. Well, it has under our very noses.

And, like the Gordian knot, it’s a noose tied very tightly around our neck’s. And, like the Gordian knot, we need a sharp sword to cut through the ‘barbara streisand” and get us back our freedom.

And that’s the last word.
