QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

“Productive class Americans are sick of being menaced by [things] their parents naively thought were being created to protect them. They’re sick of being looted by officials with five and six-digit salaries. Sick of being decimated by one senseless war after another, arranged, conveniently, for almost every generation. Sick of being wooed and cast aside in two- and four- and six-year cycles by public figures they wouldn’t trust alone with their children. Doubtless the American productive class has made foolish choices in the past. Doubtless they’ll make them again in the future. But in the end, the American productive class will triumph, precisely because they ARE productive, while their enemies are not.”

Naked Anorexic Appears on Billboards as Milan Fashion Week Begins

*** begin quote ***

"Toscani [the photographer] has literally laid his subject bare, to show the reality of this sickness to all through this naked body, a sickness that in most cases is caused by the stereotypes imposed on women by the fashion world."

*** end quote ***

With all the poverty, starvation, and sorrow in the world, it seems incredulous to me that the fashion world needs a slap upside the head to wake up. By parading models that are near-anorexic size, they do humanity a disservice.

Here in a America, we are blessed with fat “poor” people. Elsewhere in the world, people are not so lucky.

I was personally shocked by the pictures and it brings into focus how, as usual, our thinking gets us into trouble. Haines ads, with “normal” people, full-figured guys and gals, is at least not buying into the nonsense.

Our thinking – the paradigms of how we see the world and the memes of our group ideas – puts us at cross purposes with the Intelligent Designer’s plan.

Hopefully, we can get back into alignment.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Gee taps Alutto as OSU provost
Business First of Columbus - by Carrie Ghose Business First

***Begin Quote***

Joseph Alutto has been named executive vice president and provost of Ohio State University, following three months as interim provost.

President Gordon Gee, who during his first stint as president in 1991 hired Alutto as dean of the Fisher College of Business, announced the appointment of Alutto to the university’s chief academic post Thursday. The promotion is subject to approval at the Nov. 2 board of trustees meeting.

“Joe is the perfect candidate for provost of one of our nation’s top research universities,” Gee said in a release. “He has served the university admirably. Joe is a highly regarded leader in the community, on campus and in academic circles across the nation.”

Stephen Mangum is acting dean and senior associate dean of the business school.

Former Provost Barbara Snyder left June 30 to become president of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland. Alutto was also interim president from then until Gee’s arrival Oct. 1, following the retirement of Karen Holbrook.

Alutto, 65, also was a professor of management and human resources and served as executive dean to coordinate the professional schools, including education, engineering, agriculture, law and social work. Before coming to Ohio State, he ran the business school of the State University of New York at Buffalo for 14 years. His bachelor’s degree is from Manhattan College, master’s from the University of Illinois and doctorate in organizational behavior from Cornell University.

Among his tasks this year is an ongoing review of all doctoral programs to find ones that need more investment and those that may be reduced or cut.

KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Off-camera) But first, we wanna start with the fall of Marion Jones. The three-time Olympic gold medalist announced her retirement yesterday after admitting she lied to federal prosecutors about using performance-enhancing drugs. After pleading guilty in federal court, a tearful Jones faced the public.
GRAPHICS: MARION JONES: FALLEN HERO
GRAPHICS: SPRINTER ADMITS DRUG USE
MARION JONES (OLYMPIC SPRINTER)
I’m here today because I have something very important to tell you, my fans, my friends and my family. Today, I pled guilty to two counts of making false statements to federal agents. And so it is with a great amount of shame that I stand before you and tell you that I have betrayed your trust. And I am responsible fully for my actions. I have no one to blame but myself for what I have done. To you, my fans, my mother, my husband, my children, I want you to know that I have been dishonest. And you have the right to be angry with me. I have let my country down and I have let myself down. I recognize that by saying that I’m deeply sorry, it might not be enough. And because of my actions, I’m retiring from the sport of track and field, a sport, which I deeply love.
KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Off-camera) It was quite a stunning statement, quite a stunning reversal. Marion Jones has told family and friends in a letter that she’s nothing more than human, not the goddess on the track that we all once celebrated.
KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Voiceover) She was pure gold. Three gold medals and two bronze at the 2000 Olympic Games…
HOST (MALE)
Marion Jones.
KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Voiceover) …more than any woman runner had ever earned in one Olympics.
REPORTER (MALE)
How do you feel, Marion?
KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Voiceover) But after her day in court, the US Olympic Committee called on Jones to return those medals immediately. And if she doesn’t, she’ll likely be stripped of them. Under the plea agreement she made in court, she faces up to six months in jail. Jones didn’t just lie to investigators, she lied to the world over and over again for years.
MARION JONES (OLYMPIC SPRINTER)
Trust me, if I ever tested positive, we would all know. I have never, ever taken a performance-enhancing drug. Trust me, if I had had a positive test, you guys would have known.
KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Voiceover) It was her word against the word of this man, Victor Conte, owner of a lab in San Francisco who told ABC’s Martin Bashir he had given Jones and others performance-enhancing drugs.
CLIP FROM “20/20
VICTOR CONTE (FOUNDER
She did the injection with me sitting right there next to her.
MARTIN BASHIR (ABC NEWS)
(Off-camera) Right in front of you?
VICTOR CONTE (FOUNDER
Right in front of me.
KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Voiceover) Jones didn’t specifically admit to injecting steroids outside the courthouse Friday, but in a letter to close friends and family, she said her coach gave her the drug called the clear, telling her it was simple flaxseed oil.
JON WERTHEIM (SENIOR WRITER
This is a sad day for track and field. It’s a sad day for the Olympics. And a sad day for sports in general. I mean at, at some point, you just wonder if we’re gonna hit a critical mass where this, this sort of drumbeat of athletes who were either testing positive or being implicated in cases like this, whether eventually fans are just gonna be completely turned off.
JACQUELINE HARGROVE (MANHATTAN COLLEGE SPRINTER)
Her image was just so tainted by all this.
KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Voiceover) It was all these college sprinters were talking about at practice.
CARA HESSELS (MANHATTAN COLLEGE SPRINTER)
It crushes kids to look up to their heroes, then all of a sudden see that their heroes are actually not what they thought they were at all.
KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Voiceover) Worried not just about a hero falling from grace, but about what it means for track and field.
JACQUELINE HARGROVE (MANHATTAN COLLEGE SPRINTER)
If she couldn’t deal without taking steroid, then how’s it gonna be for us?
KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Off-camera) And we’re joined now by ‘USA Today” sports columnist Christine Brennan. Christine, good morning.
CHRISTINE BRENNAN (’USA TODAY” SPORTS COLUMNIST)
Good morning, Kate.
KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Off-camera) You, you heard that sprinter at the end there. We might want the message to be that doping is bad and that you get caught if you do it, but what she just said is this kind of tells us that you have to do it if you wanna win five medals at the Olympics.
CHRISTINE BRENNAN (’USA TODAY” SPORTS COLUMNIST)
And isn’t that terrible, that that’s the message a lot of these student athletes are getting from the homerun chase, Barry Bonds, Mark McGuire, all of those things? It is a terrible message the kids are getting. Many experts, Kate, say that in high school sports, steroid use is an epidemic.
KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Off-camera) Wow.
CHRISTINE BRENNAN (’USA TODAY” SPORTS COLUMNIST)
And so when these athletes do these things, they have to think about the consequences, not only for themselves and their reputations, but also for those who look up to them.
KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Off-camera) Right.
CHRISTINE BRENNAN (’USA TODAY” SPORTS COLUMNIST)
And that’s, that’s one of the big issues, I think, in this, in this story.
KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Off-camera) The chairman of the US Olympic Committee said last night that he wants Jones to turn over her medals, just give them back. He said that would be the bold thing, the right thing for her to do. Do you think she’ll do that?
CHRISTINE BRENNAN (’USA TODAY” SPORTS COLUMNIST)
I think she will, actually, based on what she did after she left the court yesterday, Kate. The fact that she came out and gets it in a way that few athletes have. Think about it, all the excuses, the whining, I didn’t do it, the dog ate my homework. Now, you’ve got a situation where there’s an athlete, Marion Jones, very articulate, crying and, and looking so contrite. If she is it the contrite and if she gets it the way she says she does, she should absolutely give back those medals before they’re stripped from her.
KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Off-camera) So many people wondering if this is just another in a long chain. And a lot of people mentioning Barry Bonds’ name because he also has been linked to, to BALCO, of course, that lab in San Francisco. What do you think? Is there more to come here?
CHRISTINE BRENNAN (”USA TODAY” SPORTS COLUMNIST)
Oh, I think so. Kate, I believe this is the story of our lives, as, as certainly as sports journalists and observers. Steroids have been with us now, really, since Ben Johnson in 1998. That’s 19 years and counting. And I agree, Barry Bonds, because it’s the clear, because it’s BALCO, the parallels are very similar here. I do think that we’ll hear a lot more about baseball and track and field. And I think we should because, as consumers, as people who observe the sport, we need to know these things, as tough as it is to hear them.
KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Off-camera) Christine Brennan, thanks so much for your insight.
CHRISTINE BRENNAN (”USA TODAY” SPORTS COLUMNIST)
Thanks, Kate.
KATE SNOW (ABC NEWS)
(Off-camera) And let’s go to, let’s go to Ron Claiborne now for the morning’s other top stories. Ron?

Dear Mr. Reinke:

A note or two on what I have been up to……

{Extraneous Deleted}

I am now listed in the Westchester Arts Council’s directory of literary artists….and….I’ve just started a group on Facebook for Irish American poets.

all best,
MaryAnn McCarra-Fitzpatrick (1989)

{JR: Neat! All Irish American poets should catch up with her group. I have a poem I wrote … and “NO!”, it doesn’t go “there once was a girl … …”. I have some original ideas. Beside with poetry, u kan spel liken a injineer!}

I missed your 20070923 Jottings so I decided to look at the daily to see what was going on. Hope your computer gets well. I know the tribulations of attending to the sick PC. Fortunately mine was an easy cure. Regarding the reference to the mineral  'JASPER'. I wonder if any of our arts majors have thought of the possible market for JASPER jewelry Patents anyone?

Joe O -57E

{JR: On the daily blog, I needed a picture. All the pics of Brother Jasper had copyrights attached. So on a whim, I googled “jasper” and found out in wikopedia that “jasper is an impure form of quartz”. That tickled me for some reason. So I used their free Creative Commons picture of a “jasper”. That’s what JoeO57 is referencing. Any jewelers out there?}

Dear CIC,

In response to your query, we have aborted over 47 million children in the USA since 1973.  That is about the current population of the Phillipines, so we have aborted approximately one small country since abortion on demand at any time and for any reason was legalized.  What a tragedy.  The good news - over half of the abortion “clinics” have closed in the last 5 years.

{JR: Hard to believe that we have killed that many people. And, cut ourselves off from their progeny. Then, the politicians have the hubris to want to save us from the graying of society. Quoting Pogo, “we have met the enemy and they is us.” Sigh. }

Iran judiciary seals offices of news Web site
(Reuters)
24 September 2007

*** begin quote ***

TEHERAN - Iran’s judiciary has sealed off the offices of a popular news Web site critical of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s policies after journalists continued to update it despite official filtering, the Web site said.

*** end quote ***

Sigh. It’s modestly amusing when technology trumps repression. I guess if they think they can bottle up dissent, then it’s best that they try. Time, money, resources, and attention spent on that hopeless task is time, money, resources, and attention that can NOT be spent on “making trouble” outside their borders.

The internet was designed to be like water that finds its way automagically around barriers. So throwing up one roadblock merely tells the network to route a different way. Like the Burmese Military Junta, who tried to silence dissent by cutting off the inet, they will find that the human spirit is indomitable.

Freedom is one of those things that are as essential to life as air, water, and food.

I pray for peace, but know that there will be eventually an insurrection. Slaves rebel. Eventually. There’s always that one straw that was just too much to bear.

Wonder when it will come in the USA?

And that’s the last word.

Curmudgeon
