*** begin quote ***

They're an odd couple in every sense but a monkey and a pigeon have become inseparable at an animal sanctuary in China.  The 12-week-old macaque - who was abandoned by his mother - was close to death when it was rescued on Neilingding Island, in Goangdong Province.  After being taken to an animal hospital his health began to improve but he seemed spiritless - until he developed a friendship with a white pigeon.

*** end quote ***

Creatures need companionship? What about us?

If I can’t have stories about poor people return great sums of lost money or stories that reflect the elemental goodness of people, I like the odd ball ones that give us insight into what we don’t know.

I think this is one such story.

How does one explain this?

Does the Universe have so many many things we can’t explain?

I’d say it does.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

JASPER HEADQUARTERS: Ellen Kiernan as director of alumni relations

From: alumni-bounces@listserv.manhattan.edu  On Behalf Of alumni@listserv.manhattan.edu
Sent: Tuesday, October 02, 2007 9:18 AM
To: alumni@listserv.manhattan.edu

Subject: New Manhattan College Alumni Director Named

TO: The Manhattan College Community
FROM: Thomas Mauriello, vice president, College Advancement
RE: New Alumni Director Named
DATE: Wednesday, September 26, 2007

Manhattan College is pleased to name Ellen Kiernan as director of alumni relations.

Having spent her entire professional career in higher education administration at New York University, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, SUNY Stony Brook, St. John¹s University and Adelphi University, Ellen brings superior skills and an impressive level of creativity in alumni programming to Manhattan College. Most recently she served as director of alumni relations at John Jay and as NYU¹s alumni outreach coordinator for the college of arts & sciences which serves an alumni body of some 140,000.

A resident of New Canaan Ct, Ellen has successfully directed alumni programs, seamlessly integrating alumni outreach with the overall advancement program goals and objectives.

A member of the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), she is an active volunteer for United Way/NYU Community Fund, Habitat for Humanity, New Canaan Food Bank, and the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure.

While there have been other non-alumni who have held the position, Ellen is the first woman to lead our alumni outreach. She brings a new perspective and will position Manhattan College to better engage the growing network of alumnae, since the College became co-educational over 30 years ago in 1974. Her energy and vision are sure to lead the alumni program forward as new initiatives are experienced and rich traditions preserved.

I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank Joe Dillon, who has served the College¹s advancement team over the past decade, for his efforts and tireless commitment to alma mater. I am personally grateful for his guidance and assistance in this time of transition.

As we welcome Ellen, I encourage you to provide her with the support needed as she assumes her new role at Manhattan.

Willowdale School District #3 All-Class Reunion Planned
By: Robert F. Lyons Press & Dakotan

***Begin Quote***

When word traveled through cyberspace that the alumni of Willowdale School District #3 were planning to have the first-ever all-school reunion on Sept. 29, in Yankton, I wondered if my wife, Nona, and I would be able to make the trek from New England. But when I saw that the majority of my five older brothers and about 50 other people educated in that one-room schoolhouse planned to attend as well as some of teachers, I knew we had to make the 3,000-mile journey. So we eagerly look forward to that trip down memory lane and what’s left of the willow lined lane east of Yankton.

About 40 years ago when I was enrolled at Manhattan College in New York City in a Masters of Education Administration program, I let out to those seasoned and quite citified classmates that my primary school education began in a one-room school on my father’s farm and that I walked to school every day down a dirt road with my five brothers and twin sister to the schoolhouse. My classmates held me in a certain awe after that admission, except for the few who would not believe there was anybody alive who had lived in that pioneer way except in the TV series, “Little House on the Prairie.” I did not tell them that it took us all of about five minutes to skip along from our house through the woods and over the fence to Willowdale School on my father’s farm.

JNEWS: Neuhauser, John “Jack” (MC1964) new president of St. Michael’s College

The Burlington Free Press (Vermont)
September 30, 2007 Sunday
01 Edition
Neuhauser plans to spread the word on St. Michael’s
BYLINE: Nick Martin
SECTION: VERMONT; Pg. 1C

*** begin quote ***

Colchester

COLCHESTERJohn “Jack” Neuhauser was formally inaugurated Saturday as the 16th president of St. Michael’s College, pledging to increase the visibility of the small liberal arts institution.

In a ceremony complete with faculty and guests in full academic regalia, the college welcomed its first new president in 11 years. The school’s board of trustees chose Neuhauser to succeed Marc vanderHeyden as president in March, and he began his tenure this summer.

Wearing the college’s purple presidential robe as he delivered a 20-minute inaugural address, Neuhauser spoke about the legacy of the college and challenges faced by higher education. He said his biggest challenge would be to increase awareness about the school.

“We have to get the word out,” he said “It’s not as well known as it should be.”

He ended his address by saying, “I very much look forward to the work ahead.”

Neuhauser served on St. Michael’s board of trustees from 2001 until he became president.

He left Boston College after a career of more than 30 years to come to St. Michael’s.

Sen. Patrick Leahy, an alumnus of the college, was among the guests on hand to welcome the new president.

“He inherits a college that is different in many ways from when I was here, but in ways it has stayed the same and kept its core values,” Leahy said. “I think he is well suited to continue that.”

Other guests included Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt.; Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt.; Vermont Gov. James Douglas and University of Vermont President Dan Fogel.

Douglas congratulated Neuhauser on behalf of the state and emphasized the importance of education.

“Education is not simply a building block but, in fact, the very cornerstone of economic progress,” he said. “I’m confident Vermont will be well-served during Jack’s tenure at this valued institution of higher education.”

Student Association President Alex Monahan said he values Neuhauser’s openness and accessibility.

“Jack has already been to a lot of athletic events and is showing his face around campus,” he said. “That’s really important to students.”

Only about 50 students attended the inauguration ceremony, but Monahan said it is normal for students to shy away from formal events.

Today, the college will hold an informal celebration for students with a barbecue and broadcast of the Red Sox game outside. Many students are looking forward to welcoming the new president in an informal setting, Monahan said.

“It will be a great opportunity for students to meet Jack and see him doing his normal thing,” he said.

Spivey Family,

My sincere condolences. I knew Scott at Manhattan College. He was in my Chemistry lab class, he took the engineering in training exam the same date I did. He always had a smile on his face when I would see him in the school hallways. 17 years have passed since Scott and I graduated. But, I never forgot what a great guy Scott was.

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

*** begin quote ***

Spokane Diocese moves toward bankruptcy end with $5 million payment

SPOKANE, Wash. (CNS) -- In what Bishop William S. Skylstad called "just one small step toward healing for the victims," the Diocese of Spokane was to wire $5 million Oct. 1 to a trust account set up to pay the claims of those sexually abused by clergy in the diocese. The payment to the Plan Trustee Trust Account, as stipulated by the bankruptcy reorganization plan approved in April, brings the diocese "one step closer to fulfilling the requirements of the plan and concluding the Chapter 11 reorganization," Bishop Skylstad said in a Sept. 27 statement. A payment of $1 million remains and must be made by Oct. 1, 2009, he said. Bishop Skylstad said the diocese "has incurred approximately $3.4 million in debt to date, which includes payment for trade creditors by January 2008." He said he would "continue fundraising to reduce the level of debt, so that ministry support in eastern Washington can continue." Under the terms of the settlement plan, the 176 childhood victims of abuse by priests or other church personnel in the diocese will receive compensation ranging from $15,000 to $1.5 million, depending on several factors, including the severity of the abuse and whether or not the statute of limitations had run out before the claim was made.

*** end quote ***

Sadly noted. I could rant and rave about it. But it’s just sad. We’re all sinners. But some of us have some really big ones to atone for.

And that’s the last word.
