EXHORTATION

Sorry to say, I haven’t written this. It was of interest to me at the disinterest in my power problems by employees of the various companies to who I turned to for help. (I was paying and not asking for charity.) Special excoriation for Dell, Sams Club, WalMark, OfficeDepot, Staples, the two 24 hour laptop repair firms in Vegas, and the pawn shop (it advertised computers, but had none). The only bright spot was Brookstones. Their EWR employee sold me something he thought would work (it didn’t) but correctly told me of their return policy. Their LAS employee accepted the return with no problem and showed me what I should have been sold. She made an interesting observation that the if the EWR site didn’t have the CORRECT one, he could have checked with the LAS site and they would have had it for me when I arrived. I intended to compliment them on that idea. The young women in Vegas is a gem. Sigh, now I have to try to make the midnight deadline for Jasper Jottings.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Manhattan College Announces Completion Of Sesquicentennial Capital Campaign
$160 million raised in largest campaign in Manhattan College history.

RIVERDALE, N.Y.Manhattan College has announced the completion of its Sesquicentennial Campaign after having raised more than $160 million over six years in the largest capital campaign in the 154-year history of the College.

Announced publicly in January 2003, the Sesquicentennial Capital Campaign, with an initial goal of $150 million, was the most ambitious development program in Manhattan College history. It began in July 2001 and was officially completed this past June, although promises of new money have continued in recent weeks and several potential gifts are still being finalized.

“The Sesquicentennial Capital Campaign has been a transformative moment in the history of Manhattan College, as it has established a very solid financial platform to propel Manhattan deep into the 21st century,” says Brother Thomas Scanlan, president of Manhattan College.  “We are very grateful to every single donor who helped make this campaign a singular success.”

An impressive cost benefit ratio of less than 10 cents spent per dollar raised ranks the campaign with the best in the nation. The Faculty/Staff campaign, part of the overall fundraising effort, accrued $1.3 million in less than a year.

The campaign’s success in its final two years was due in large part to the appointment of Tom O’Malley in July 2005 as chairman of the College’s board of trustees. O’Malley is resolute in his effort to build the endowment, enabling the College to continue its historic commitment to first generation college students, especially those from New York City who have significant financial need. Upon being named chairman, O’Malley strongly challenged the board members to secure increased funding.

In June 2006, the board of trustees presented a $17 million gift to Manhattan College, propelling the Sesquicentennial Capital Campaign past the $135 million plateau. The gifts from the balance of the board, which was over and above its regular contributions, included a collective gift to the College from the De La Salle Christian Brothers, the College’s founding order, who serve on the board. The Sesquicentennial Capital Campaign thus marked a new culture of major gifts to the College, leaving the institution on a more firm financial footing.

As a result of the campaign, Manhattan College’s endowment has climbed to nearly $45 million and there are four new endowed chairs in its various schools, each at $1.5 million.

“We’ll be on much sounder financial footing, the endowment will be built, a new residence hall will be built and additional scholarship money will be realized as a result of this campaign,” says Michael McMorrow, executive director of the Sesquicentennial Capital Campaign. “This endeavor will provide students will the best possible environment, from scholarship funds to a new residence hall, so that they can prepare for their own future in the best possible environment.”

During the public phase of the campaign, the College approached alumni/ae, parents, friends, corporations, private foundations and other potential donors, who share Manhattan College’s educational values and mission.

The College kicked off its Sesquicentennial Capital Campaign and recognized leadership gifts of $100,000 or more, as well as those already committed to helping the College meet its fund-raising goals, at a reception prior to the De La Salle Medal Dinner in January 2003. At that point, more than $50 million had already been raised through leadership gifts.

Among the initial goals, funds raised by the Sesquicentennial Capital Campaign supported the construction of a new residence hall, East Hill Tower II, which will be completed prior to the 2008-09 academic year. Other objectives included increased support for faculty development and expansion of the student scholarship endowment. Eighty-five percent of Manhattan College students receive some form of financial aid and the larger scholarship endowment will ensure that financial considerations do not prevent promising students from considering the College.

The Sesquicentennial Capital Campaign has enabled the College to support its educational mission with modern technology. More than 300 current generation personal computers are now available to students in nine labs across the campus, with 100 systems available on a 24-hour basis in O’Malley Library.

All classrooms have direct connections to JasperNet, as well as wireless access, and the campaign funded installation of several ceiling-mounted data projectors. Additionally, all faculty members are provided with their own notebook computer and the College has connected to one of the leading data centers in New York City via its own “dark fiber” network, allowing for cross connection opportunities to virtually anywhere on the planet.

The College’s Internet bandwith also has been increased, with gigabit expansion capability in order to support demanding applications such as Web-based video. Students have seen their classroom experience enhanced by BlackBoard, a system to which faculty post course syllabuses, class notes, presentations, materials and other Web links.

The Lasallian principles upon which Manhattan College was founded are still in place 154 years later: tradition of excellence in teaching, respect for individual dignity, and commitment to social justice. The campaign objectives of “Support for Endowed Chairs and Professorships” and “Support for Faculty Development” help the College strengthen and build upon its most valuable resource – its faculty – and ensure that the Lasallian tradition of excellence in teaching remains a core part of the College’s mission.

Founded in 1853, Manhattan College is an independent, Catholic, coeducational institution of higher learning offering more than 40 major programs of undergraduate study in the areas of arts, business, education, engineering and science, along with graduate programs in education and engineering. Acclaimed Darfur Expert To Open Manhattan College Holocaust Resource Center Fall Program
Dr. Jeff Horn named new Director

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Dr. Eric Reeves, professor of English language and literature at Smith College, will open the fall program of Manhattan College’s Holocaust Resource Center with his lecture A Long Day’s Dying: Genocide by Attrition in Darfur on Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in Smith Auditorium.

The Holocaust Resource Center is continuing its programs under the new leadership of Dr. Jeff Horn, associate professor of history at Manhattan College. Dr. Horn has assumed the role as the center’s director, and the College is currently working to establish a leadership team and board of advisors to help oversee all future programs and lectures.

Dr. Horn succeeds Frederick M. Schweitzer as director. Schweitzer was the instrumental voice in launching the Holocaust Resource Center and overseeing its activities for more than a decade. Schweitzer, professor emeritus of history, has been a member of the Manhattan College community for nearly half a century.

“I am humbled to follow Frederick Schweitzer’s example in maintaining the strong links between Manhattan College and the Riverdale community,” Horn says. “It is my hope, or intention, to emphasize this link even more. The campus community joins me in believing that the Holocaust and other genocides must be studied, understood and never forgotten.”

Under Dr. Horn’s direction, the Holocaust Resource Center will initially be holding two public events per academic year, including the Frederick M. Schweitzer Lecture on the Holocaust and Genocide, which will be inaugurated in the fall of 2008. On Nov. 6, the Center will be commemorating Kristallnacht, or “The Night of Broken Glass,” a massive, coordinated attack on synagogues and Jewish businesses throughout the German Reich on the night of Nov. 9, 1938. The public program will feature the premier of two educational DVDs in which Manhattan College students interview local Holocaust survivors.

Manhattan College’s commitment to the Holocaust Resource Center has been unwavering,” says Brother Thomas Scanlan, president of Manhattan College.  “The College is expanding its efforts to institutionalize the center to ensure its effective functioning long into the future. We are hopeful that the Holocaust Resource Center will be enriched by contributions and support which will permit it to expand and further develop its events and activities.”

The Center’s first event under Dr. Horn’s direction, A Long Day’s Dying: Genocide by Attrition in Darfur, is free and open to the public. The event is co-sponsored by JustPeace, a student group dedicated to spreading awareness of social issues worldwide, and by the student government of Manhattan College.

Dr. Reeves is internationally recognized for his knowledge of current events in Sudan and is the author of A Long Day’s Dying: Critical Moments in the Darfur Genocide (2007). He is a longtime public advocate of issues related to Darfur and has spent the last eight years working as a Sudan researcher and analyst. Dr. Reeves has testified several times before Congress and has served as a consultant to a number of human rights and humanitarian organizations operating in Sudan.

For more information about Dr. Reeves’ lecture or the Holocaust Resource Center, please contact Dr. Horn at (718) 862-7129 or jeff.horn@manhattan.edu. Members of the media who would like to attend the event should contact Scott Silversten, communications manager, at (718) 862-7232 or scott.silversten@manhattan.edu.

The history of the Holocaust Resource Center dates back to 1996, when discussions among concerned faculty and administrators at the College and the Riverdale community led to the founding of the Holocaust Resource Center with the mission to promote Catholic-Jewish dialogue and to educate future generations about the Holocaust. The Center inaugurated its Visiting Scholars Program the follow year, and in 2006, an additional annual lecture was added to the series focusing on genocides other than the Holocaust.

To further its mission, the Center sponsored workshops for teachers in the metropolitan area from 1997-2002 and worked closely with the College’s school of education to incorporate segments on the Holocaust into curriculum and special courses. In the past decade, the Center has sponsored bus trips to the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C., and New York City’s Battery Park. It also has sponsored events, such as commemorations of Yom Hashoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) and Kristallnacht, and model Passover seders on campus and in the community.

Founded in 1853, Manhattan College is an independent, Catholic, coeducational institution of higher learning offering more than 40 major programs of undergraduate study in the areas of arts, business, education, engineering and science, along with graduate programs in education and engineering. Subject: Paul Cavanagh '65 RIP

Dear John,

I was able to attend Paul's Mass of Christian Burial on Monday at St. Philip Neri Church in Northport. It is a well appointed large Church and while there were over 100 people in attendance, the acoustics were apparently geared for a full church and it was most difficult to hear and understand the Celebrant and the Eulogist. As a result at the gathering after the burial Paul's daughter Colleen Cavanagh printed out copies of her tribute to her father and gave them to us "old timers" that were there. I have attached a copy as I believe that she sums up the legacy of great Jasper.

I should also note that Paul's daughter-in-law Theresa (Kiernan) Cavanagh is a member of the Class of 1989. She also received her Masters from Manhattan.

        May He Rest In Peace!
                     Mike

EULOGY for Paul Cavanagh '65
by his daughter Colleen Cavanagh

I bet you would think growing up with a rocket scientist, world sailor, artist, hero, and dangerous spider killer would be rough. But growing up with Dad wasn’t because we honestly never saw him in those lights until this past week. For instance I just learned the other day that he patented a LASER BEAM, was the first to put a computer system on a boat in the America’s Cup, used CPR to save a man’s life, and some how was part of the rescue mission to land the Apollo 13. By seeing the crowds he drew this week and hearing your stories about him I am assured you felt his humbleness as well.

What we did know growing up (besides the fact that we had the best snow caves on the block) was that mistakes are the best part of learning, accolades and merits are a result of hard work and commitment, and Dad’s don’t forget that you didn’t go to Church. Dad taught us our life lessons by the way in which he lived his life. Dad worked extremely hard during the week (where we thought he just had cool lunches everyday and build airplanes) and we so learned that Sundays were for family, bacon & eggs and football, He showed us that you should always give more that you expect in return. He taught us self empowerment, gave us a heart for dedication and a head for accountability. I know that I speak for my brothers and sisters when I say we’ve grown into the accomplished adults you see before you because of the man we’re honoring today.

Growing up I was fortunate enough to spend a lot of time with Dad at the countless dog shows that I’d persuade him to take me to. After the “so where do you see yourself in ten years” question in the multi hour car ride…I got the opportunity to work side by side with the natural leader, organized planner, swift problem solver, and the untiring volunteer that everyone knew Dad to be. Luckily for us, those traits have been handed down.

As I formulate my good byes to my Dad I think about all the great times we had together. Then I think about my less than stellar moments, Times that I was expecting the most severe punishment- like when my sisters had to interrupt his boy scout meeting because I broke my arm performing illegal vaults over the couch, when our above ground pool collapsed at 11 o’clock at night with us in it, the day I broke the kitchen window with my dog’s ball, or better yet- the night I came stumbling home past curfew after discovering they made alcohol taste like fruit punch. Times that I really thought I’d be shipped off to that awful boarding school in Ireland. But before I could pack my socks Dad would bestow his pardon on me with his: “I am sure you’re never going to THAT again- right?”

It makes us sad to think that Dad is gone so early. But we admit it certainly helps to see all the incredible and amazing things he’s accomplished. We are so glad that he finally retired and took that trip cross country (not so glad to volunteer to watch the 11 hours of video, however). We are floored by the wood turning talent he worked so hard to acquire; I am also relieved that God will finally help him with that golf swing. Most importantly, we are most impressed with the lives he has touched and proud of the relationships he maintained over the years- a true testament to the giving, generous, and compassionate soul our Dad was.

We wish you folks could have seen the Cavanagh children in action this week We are sure we made Dad proud with our collaborative efforts to give him the proper send off he so deserves. Again a testament to the tight family bond he and Mom worked so hard to create. I am pretty sure I heard him laughing right along side us when we hit that emotional wall and began to crack up. In our trip to Chicago we met so many people that became a part of Dad’s circle of friends. It was so inspiring and therapeutic to hear your heartfelt stories about the times you shared with Dad. These memories will be carried in our hearts forever- we thank you for them.

Sadly, I know that my Dad won’t be walking me down this aisle, have his picture taken with my kids (okay my 4- legged kids), or ask again how an A in Biochemistry is helping me sell carpet. In keeping with his life teachings we will promise to live life to the fullest and make the most of the time we have on this bouncing ball. We all have our favorite stories to remember Dad by. We all carry famous Dad-isms in our hearts. Let’s make a promise to put a little bit of Dad into our everyday lives.

But we are quite certain no matter what we do or where we go we know he’ll be right there with us- watching from the best seat in the house. AND we’ll know for sure that he’ll be able to HEAR us!

AND NOW ALICIA WILL SING!!

Diocese Settles Abuse Claims for $198M
Sep 8 06:31 AM US/Eastern
By ALLISON HOFFMAN
Associated Press Writer

*** begin quote ***

SAN DIEGO (AP) - The Roman Catholic Diocese of San Diego said Friday it has agreed to pay $198.1 million to settle 144 claims of sexual abuse by clergy, the second-largest payment by a diocese. The agreement caps more than four years of negotiations in state and federal courts.

*** end quote ***

This saddens me. I blame the parents and the gooferment. The parents took hush money. And, the gooferment is very happy to see institutions destroyed that can challenge its dominance. (Remember the role of Holy Mother Church in the Polish freedom movement! I’m sure that the significance of that was not missed by any gooferment any where in the world.) Social Security and welfare destroyed the family. Welfare destroyed all the fraternal and charitable organizations. Pedophilia in the Church was just fine with the gooferment. It removes a big rival — arguably the biggest — for the hearts and minds of the people.

!!!

And that’s the last word.
