Swiss Deportation Policy Draws Criticism
Sep 1 08:17 AM US/Eastern
By FRANK JORDANS Associated Press Writer

*** begin quote ***

GENEVA (AP) - The campaign poster was blatant in its xenophobic symbolism: Three white sheep kicking out a black sheep over a caption that read "for more security." The message was not from a fringe force in Switzerland's political scene but from its largest party.

The nationalist Swiss People's Party is proposing a deportation policy that anti-racism campaigners say evokes Nazi-era practices. Under the plan, entire families would be expelled if their children are convicted of a violent crime, drug offenses or benefits fraud.

*** end quote ***

Well, you have to laugh when politicians get it wrong.

But there is something to say for familial responsibility. I remember when I was young, my Mom admonishing me that I had to “be good” because people would blame my Mom for my behavior. Frau Reinke’s Mom was equally concerned about “what would the neighbor’s think”. So good behavior was the standard!

In today’s location-free culture, no one cares about what the neighbor thinks. No one cares what society thinks. When a pop idol can get up and gyrate (badly) in their underwear on national TV, you have to wonder where it’s all going. Ostracism is one’s ultimate weapon on bad behavior. That, and you can turn off the TV.

While I don’t believe in prosecuting “victimless crimes”, it would be nice to change the justice system from “retribution” over to “restitution”. In the example above, maybe the families should have to pay restitution for what their family member breaks. It certainly would be an interesting experiment.

I’m sure all my fellow alums wouldn’t want to have to pay for all the stuff I “break”. But there is no rumor of legislation to make alumni responsible for the failings of their fellow alums.

Some would say reading Jasper Jottings is punishment enough for the Collector In Chief’s sins. Or was that sines and cosines. Or signs and bumper stickers. Or puns.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

JOY: Two bundles of Jasper joy

*** begin quote ***

John,

I wanted to pass on some great news. Two more Jasper babies were born in the last couple of weeks:

Joe Giamelli (’97) and his wife Anna welcomed a beautiful baby girl, Samantha Rose, into the world on August 31 at 9:11 PM.

Samantha is their first child and weighed 6 pounds, 14 ounces and was 20 inches long at birth.

Krystyn (Meyers-’98) and Rich Carbonaro (BS-’97, ME-’99, currently a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at MC) welcomed their first son, Hayden Cole this morning at 8:03 AM.

Hayden, their second child (daughter Carleigh is 3 and a half years old) is 9 pounds and 21 and a half inches long.

Thanks,

Jim Morrissey (BS ’97, ME ’99)

{JR: Thank you, Grace. As long as someone thinks he’s “ours”, well see it that way too. It’s not that the College’s records could ever be “wrong” or incomplete or … … . Now if you said the Finance Department had no record of him, then we’d know for sure there was an error. No one ever gets away without paying. J  Just kidding. Sort of.  }

{N.B.: In accordance with my liberal definition of what is a Jasper, I think if some one saw fit to mention his time at Manhattan College, then it must have been important to him. That makes him a Jasper to me. Besides isn't once of the corporal works of mercy to bury the dead? I'll commend him to our fellow alums for their prayers.  }

He’s glad to be back at MHS
By:Christine McCluskey , Journal Inquirer

MANCHESTER - Kevin F. O’Donnell liked his job as assistant principal of Bristol Central High School a lot, enough so that there was only one other job he would consider: Manchester High School principal.

The 30-year Manchester resident, who left Bristol and started as MHS’s new principal a couple of weeks ago, said he saw the job as “an opportunity to serve in the community that I’d chosen to live in.”

O’Donnell worked at MHS as a guidance counselor from 1979 to 1989. He grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., and earned degrees from Brooklyn College and Long Island University, as well as a professional diploma in counseling from Manhattan College and a sixth-year certificate in administration and supervision from Central Connecticut State University.

He began teaching primarily in the department of religion at a Catholic school in the Bronx, and then got into the area of guidance. He was at MHS when it established ties with Manchester Community College and developed adult education offerings.

After leaving Manchester O’Donnell was an administrator in the South Windsor and Stafford public schools, and for a couple of years he was the education coordinator at the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center in Hartford.

For the past seven years he was assistant principal of one of Bristol’s two high schools. With about 1,450 students, it was smaller than MHS, where the new freshman class has more than 500 members, but the town of Bristol is similar in size and demographics to Manchester, O’Donnell said.

During his time there, Bristol Central High School was one of only a handful of high schools in Connecticut that have been removed from the federal government’s warning list under No Child Left Behind.

MHS is also on the government’s “in need of improvement” list, with large racial and economic achievement gaps and several subgroups falling below proficiency targets, especially in math, this year.

O’Donnell arrives as the school is either finishing up or in the midst of several big changes, some easy to see and others not as visible.

MHS this summer got itself off the New England Association of Schools and Colleges’ warning list, where it had been for four years, after making several changes that ranged from writing a mission statement to putting more books in the library to constructing the new $35.4 million freshman wing. NEASC evaluates high schools and gives them accreditation.

The school is also in the midst of expanding its “proficiency project,” under which teachers have begun measuring students’ performance against set standards for each course. The project also requires teachers to continue working with students on concepts until the students understand them.

Besides the new freshman wing, efforts to improve students’ first year of high school include putting them in teams for their core courses for the first time this year and assigning them in small groups to faculty advisors.

O’Donnell said he has no plans yet to add any major changes of his own to all these, but will be examining areas of the curriculum to try to improve Connecticut Academic

Performance Test scores, as well as preparing for NEASC’s next visit in 2009, which will require a lot of “self-examination.”

“I’m really excited about coming back here,” O’Donnell said.

KORE Telematics Names Tony Tarsia Director of National Public Sector Sales

***Begin Quote***

Tarsia Brings More Than 22 Years of Successful Sales and Marketing Experience to Lead KORE’s Public Sector Growth and Respond to the Market’s Growing Demand for M2M Solutions

HERNDON, Va. & TORONTO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–KORE Telematics (www.koretelematics.com), North America’s largest independent provider of digital wireless services for the machine-to-machine (M2M), telematics and telemetry markets, today announced the appointment of Tony Tarsia to director of national public sector sales. With more than 22 years experience selling and marketing information technology products and services, Tarsia will be responsible for leading KORE’s public sector sales efforts as the company responds to the growing federal, state and local government demand for wireless M2M applications.

With an increased focus on homeland security, the government sector is adopting newer, innovative technologies, such as M2M, that can help protect its citizens and infrastructure. As the Federal government begins to pass regulations for tracking assets, people and shipments of materials into the country, the demand for wireless M2M solutions is growing at an exponential rate. For instance, the container shipping industry is already implementing M2M-based container identification, cargo monitoring and security alerts in the event of tampering. In addition, asset tracking devices now often include M2M-powered explosive and hazardous waste detectors that are used to alert local authorities of potential threats.

“Tony has a proven track record for sales and marketing success in the public sector and we are thrilled to name him to this new position within the KORE team,” said Alex Brisbourne, president and COO, KORE Telematics. “Tony will help our public sector market development efforts by creating and expanding our partner and customer relationships in the government vertical, which has seen a tremendous up tick in interest in M2M wireless applications.”

Prior to joining KORE earlier this year, Tarsia was national sales director at eTelemetry, Inc., a developer of network management and security appliances, where he established its direct sales organization and launched a channel program. Prior to eTelemetry, Tarsia was the director of sales and marketing at LRW Digital, Inc., a wireless messaging and security software provider, where he was responsible for the development and execution of all sales, marketing and business development initiatives with an emphasis on the Federal and Department of Defense markets.

“As a recognized leader in the wireless M2M market, I’m excited to build on KORE’s proven ability and help respond to the public sector’s demand for secure and reliable wireless M2M networks,” said Tarsia. “I’m looking forward to spearheading this new position to help broaden awareness and adoption of M2M solutions across the government market.”

Tarsia has held a number of sales and marketing management positions throughout his career in the wireless and information technology industry. He held sales and marketing director positions at KPMG Consulting, EveryPath, Inc. and American Systems Corporation. In addition, Tarsia held sales and engineering positions at Convergys Corporation, Control Data Corporation and ManTech International Corporation. He holds a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Manhattan College.

About KORE Telematics

KORE Telematics, through its exclusive service agreements and extensive infrastructure support, is at the center of the expanding M2M field. The company maintains a network operations center capable of managing all aspects of its network as well as call management, billing services, connectivity control, and Web-based SIM and device service management. These facility investments, combined with network services from leading North American GSM/GPRS carrier partners, assure users of seamless and high availability voice-and-data transmission capability for all their M2M needs. I am wondering if any of you out there are aware of the current contact information for Mr. Michael Hennelly (Arts & Sciences 1968 or '69, I think.....).

He was my immediate supervisor (Senior Editor to my Assistant Editor) at Plenum Publishing Corporation prior to our absorption by Kluwer Academic Publishers.

I've done a Google search but have not found him.

Many thanks.....

John: A reply to your request for feedback/suggestions. Jasper Jottings does fill a need for me; I find myself looking for it in my e-Mail bin each Saturday. It keeps me in touch w/ folks and doings at Alma Mater.

Even your musings (which, as you know from prior responses, sometime infuriate me ) are sought after on this end. As an old psychologist I particularly liked your reference this week to the somewhat forgotten Johari Window which reminds us that things (even ourselves) are not always what they seem. Keep it comin'.

{JR: Hi Bob: Thanks for those kind thoughts. With the all the copies that I send out and make available via different way, I'm always surprised that there's so little -- what I'll call -- participation. Maybe everyone's busy. Maybe that's just me looking through my particular pane of glass that keeps me from seeing value. Betcha didn't know an old injineer would even know about Joe and Harry! When I counsel FOWGs who are out of work, I'm always amazed how "heads down" they can be. Even in today's job market, where networking is vital to continued employment. As far as my rantings, remember that which doesn't kill us makes us stronger. And, the venue is always open for a different view. :-)  Even if it's "wrong".  :-)  So I'm putting you down in the "more of same" category. Thanks for the feedback, fjohn68  }

Hello Mr. Reinke,

I had a very important question to inquire from you, Is the paper accessible to any person that does a google search or is it privitized for the Manhattan College alumni past graduates of the school?  I had performed a google search and I had found that the information that you send to the Manhattan College alumni past graduates is easily accessible to the general public.  I am not sure if you were aware of this or if this was the design of the information that you e-mail to everyone.  Can you please let me know due to the dangerous times of online security problems.  I do enjoy maintaining a connection with other past Manhattan College alumni but not at the expense of a google search for anyone to perform on the computer at random.  I had wanted to draw your attention to this, if you were unaware.

Thank You,
Sheryl Chung

Sheryl:

You’re wise to be circumspect about security.

Yes, everything in Jasper Jottings is "findable" on the internet. That's why if you notice, I carefully sanitize all email addresses from the "paper" (as you call it). As well as some other information that might give too much away.

Since everything in the ezine is publicly available anyway, (That's how I find it in the first place), there really is no security issues.

(I was an information security officer in three brokerage houses in my career. So am well versed in the security and privacy issues of doing the alumni ezine.)

If you go onto the Yahoo distribution group or the alumni group, which is private and doesn't "leak" out to the net, you can find email addresses.

On my unofficial Jasper Jottings steering committee, I have a lawyer, a doctor, a ceo, and an HR type. So, in addition to me, there are a lot of "eyes" looking what we are doing.

In fact, you are more likely to have your information exposed by the College (i.e., they have your SSN; I don't) than you are from Jasper Jottings. When they contracted with PlanetAll way back when, I was the first alumni to sign on and had a whole page of "suggestions" from what I found. I also have for the last 5 - 10 years (I forget how long I've been doing it) been serving on the MC Computer Governance Committee and advise Brother President on Information Security issues.

So, you're right to be concerned, but I can assure you that it's "ok" (i.e., no added risk).

Hope this helps,
fjohn68

‘Lawyers Who Needs Them’ Radio Program Goes Global

***Begin Quote***

World Talk Radio, the nations’ largest internet radio carrier serving over two million listeners has announced that starting Monday, September 17th at 7:00PM EST they will carry the award winning “Lawyers Who Needs Them” program featuring hosts Randal Simonetti and James Hartman Esq.

Phoenix, AZ (PRWEB) September 12, 2007 — World Talk Radio, the nations’ largest internet radio carrier serving over two million listeners has announced that starting Monday, September 17th at 7:00PM EST they will carry the award winning “Lawyers Who Needs Them” program featuring hosts Randal Simonetti and James Hartman Esq. The program originated on National Public Radio in Rochester in the early 90s and moved to Rochester’s CBS affiliate WHAM. During that period Simonetti and Hartman received the coveted New York State BAR Association Media Award for broadcast excellence.

Simonetti and Hartman provide an informative, entertaining and often irreverent look at the law and those who practice it. The hosts explore the application and implication of the law in everyday life. Their discussions cover a wide range of related topics such as education, business, government, medicine, sports and entertainment. No one is safe from the law or Jim and Randal. Their humorous and out spoken approach to topics keeps listeners laughing and interested. They bring legal concepts down to earth. However, they are relentless and direct when it comes to those who abuse the law or manipulate it for personal gain. The hosts bring over 60 years of combined business, legal and academic experience to the subject and most importantly enjoy helping listeners who call with questions or seek guidance.

The program’s rapid fire pace is complimented with visits from famous legal figures like English barristers Sir James Featherweight and Sir Randal Dishwater along with guests ranging from business, government and judicial leaders to some of Hollywood’s most famous actors and actresses. Each week, legal bunglers are eligible to receive the Simon-Hart Award given to people who abuse the legal system or use the law to take advantage of others.

“We never know who is going to be on the other end of a call,” says Randal Simonetti. “Our objective is simple; we are there to take the fear and mystery out of our complex system of jurisprudence.”

“Make no mistake about it,” explains Jim Hartman, “We challenge those who abuse the system while we advocate for common sense.”

Randal Simonetti is the President and CEO of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society for Upstate New York serving over 12,000 clients and their families. He is also the founder and CEO of Ignition Consulting, Ltd., a full service management, marketing and public relations consulting firm. He has held executive management positions at AT&T, Citicorp, Frontier and Global Crossing. He holds a BA Degree in English from Manhattan College, a master’s degree in Communications from Manhattanville College and a second masters in Administration from Southern Connecticut State University.

He has attended the executive studies program at the Wharton School of Business and the Harvard-MIT School of Dispute Resolution. He has published over a dozen articles on leadership, reputation management, global marketing, mergers and acquisitions and consultative selling.

James Hartman Esq. has been practicing law for over 50 years and possesses a diverse background in litigation and corporate law. He is considered one of Rochester’s top trial attorneys and has argued before the United States Supreme Court. James recently retired from the law firm of Harris, Beach, LLP and continues to work as a legal consultant to law firms throughout the country. Jim received his BA from New York University and his JD from Columbia University. He is a former president of the Monroe County BAR Association and a member of the board of directors of the American Board of Trial Advocates.

Both Jim and Randal were professional musicians. Jim toured the country as a member of the United State Army Band playing clarinet and saxophone. Randal founded the successful New York metropolitan area band, “Circus” playing the string bass and bass guitar.

Coppo, Jr. Matt had been struggling emotionally with his size (he’d stood 6’3” and weighed 240 pounds at the time) when his father gave him this advice. “[H]e told me God had given me a great gift and that I should use it to my full potential.”

Matt admitted that he took those words for granted at the time, but they came to his aid during his father’s funeral days later—when Matt towered over almost everyone else and was an easy-to-spot focus.

“As I walked down the aisle at the end of [my father’s] service, I realized that everyone was looking straight at me. I tried to appear dignified and brave in the hope that my calm, tall presence would comfort my family and friends and give them the courage to make it through.”

Five years ago on September 11, 2001, Joseph J. Coppo, Jr., went to work on the 104th floor of the North World Trade Tower. He was Vice President of municipal bonds at Cantor Fitzgerald, but seemed to be more comfortable coaching kids on a baseball field. People knew him as every kid’s coach. He’d coached his youngest son’s All-Star baseball team that summer.

“He was very demanding, but he was someone you always wanted to work hard for,” said his daughter, Kathleen, who played center field for him on a softball team.

Kathleen also relied on her father’s insight and good advice, saying he was “[M]y best friend, the first person I turned to for anything.”

Joe Coppo didn’t believe in war and Kathleen, a teacher of social justice at a small Catholic school, seems to share that belief. Even though she lost her father in a terrorist attack, Kathleen’s wasn’t one of the voices crying out for retaliation, and she believes her father would have been proud of her stance following 9/11.

From what I have read in my research about Joe Coppo, he seemed to be the type of person who liked to be involved in his Community, especially if it had anything to do with baseball. He seemed to be the type of guy who easily inspired and led others—not because he was a big man, but because he had a big heart.

Joe Coppo, I remember you. Although I wouldn’t have shared your love of baseball, I would have eaten a hotdog on the stands with you and listened to what you had to say.

Patricia, Kathleen, Joseph, Matthew, and John, please know that your husband and father is not forgotten.

In the few short years that I knew Joe, I quickly came to realize how much I would learn from him. The veteran took the rookie under his wing. Always suggesting things in just the right way, not too forceful, but always firmly. As his catcher, I could see his ability to control any situation. It is my guess that this is how Joe was as a father and a husband. I will always remember the easy way and big smile.

Robert M. Geraci writes, “I am an assistant professor of religious studies at Manhattan College and I’m writing a book about robotics and artificial intelligence. I have already spent time this summer as a visiting researcher at Carnegie Mellon’s Robotics Institute but I would like to supplement my fieldwork with help from the Internet robot community. You can help Robert with his research by taking his short survey on robots and religion. Some of the questions are a bit vague but that’s probably because they’re written from a religious rather than scientific point of view. Give it your best shot and hopefully Robert will post the results of the survey for us soon.

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

A once drug-addled elephant fed heroin-laced bananas by illegal traders is to return to the wild after being weaned off his addiction.

*** end quote ***

What you mean they did NOT send it to prison for 25 to life? Good think he wasn’t in the “Drug War” Ameirka!

I don’t understand. Are voters stupid? Are taxpayers enjoying “the show”? Do people is this neck of the woods not understand what is going on?

1920’s Prohibition! Ring a bell?

Today’s drug war? Overflowing prisons. Collateral damage. Pontificating politicians. And, we still have addicts.

Drug addiction is terrible. Putting the gooferment in charge of the solution is like giving a case of beer and the car keys to teenage boys!

Sigh, how dumb are we.

The answer?

Easy. Just like what ended prohibition. Every juror on a drug case votes “not guilty”. No explanations needed. All you say is “the state didn’t prove its case”.

When the gooferment can’t get convictions, the addicts will realize not to plead guilty.

Then we will solve the problem!

And the gooferment will have no choice but to repeal all these idiotic laws, regs, and diktats.

Just like Prohibition.

Just say “no” to gooferment!

And that’s the last word.
