The Utah miners were trapped below ground at the Crandall Canyon Mine when the mine collapsed some 3.4 miles from the portal in the early morning hours of August 6. The US Geological Survey reported that an earthquake of 3.9 magnitude rocked the region shortly before 3 a.m. Monday, local time. However, scientists at the University of Utah Seismograph Stations said they believed the recorded movement in the area was not a quake, but rather was “consistent with a mine-type collapse.” Since the mid-1990s, at least half a dozen other mine collapses have caused similar seismic waves.

After the three rescuers died, discretion was the better part of valor and resuce / recovery efforts ceased. It makes me sad. And, I pray for all left behind. Life is not without suffering and death. Hopefully, we will learn this painful lesson eventually. It will happen, but it better be worth it.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

U.S. News & World Report Ranks Manhattan College’s School Of Engineering Among The Best In The Nation

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – U.S. News & World Report has ranked Manhattan College’s school of engineering among the best undergraduate engineering programs in the nation. The College’s ranking appears in the print and online versions of U.S. News & World Report’s 2008 Edition of “America’s Best Colleges” released this week.

Manhattan College’s school of engineering earned a peer review rating of 2.9 and was ranked tied-38th among engineering schools whose highest degree is a bachelor’s or master’s.

U.S. News ranks only undergraduate engineering programs accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. The rankings are based solely on a peer survey that consists of deans and senior faculty who rate overall programs and best programs in various specialties. Forty-five percent of the individuals surveyed returned ratings.

In the Best Universities-Master’s (North Region) category, Manhattan College ranked tied-19th, up from tied-23rd a year ago. The College received an overall score of 65 (on a scale of 100), an increase of five points

The Best Universities-Master’s category includes institutions that provide a full range of undergraduate and master’s programs, but offer few, if any, doctoral programs. The 574 universities in the category are ranked within four geographic areas – North, South, Midwest and West – because they tend to draw students mostly from surrounding states.

As meteoric falls from grace go, it’s hard to top Aaron Dare’s for velocity, distance and angle of trajectory.

Just 10 years ago, at age 27, the Albany native was the toast of both the city’s admiring power structure and the doting minority community of which he was a member. He was a widely proclaimed natural leader everybody who was anybody said was headed for greatness. He was the second-youngest Urban League president in the country, full of ideas for catapulting the region’s minority communities into self-sufficient oases of growth and pride.

He was physically huge at a beefy 6 feet 7 inches, a former basketball player at Albany High, Manhattan College and Adelphi University, and had a picture-book marriage to a kindergarten teacher. To say he was idolized is not an exaggeration. Look at the newspaper clips from those years, how people gushed over him.

In a decade it’s all gone to dust in a big way.

BRIDGEPORT — Wilbur Chapman, a former chief of Bridgeport police who left the job amid controversy, is the new second-in-command of the New York City Police Department.

New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly announced Chapman’s appointment last week as deputy commissioner for training of the nation’s largest police department.

“Bill Chapman brings vast and varied experience to the all-important task of molding the future of the New York City Police Department,” Kelly said. “The department needs Bill Chapman’s depth of counter-terrorism and community relations.”

A Forgotten Catholic Poet is Rediscovered

MERCHANTVILLE, NJ - AUGUST 19, 2007 - With the release of the Motu Proprio Summorum Pontificum liberating the Tridentine Liturgy, Pope Benedict XVI sent an unmistakable signal for modern Catholics to begin rediscovering and appreciating the Church’s rich heritage. In this spirit of renaissance, Arx Publishing is pleased to announce the publication of Broken Crusts: Songs of Faith and Freedom by the outstanding 20th century Catholic poet, Clifford J. Laube (July 2007, paperback, 136 pages + illustrations, ISBN: 9781889758732, list price: $12.95).

Clifford Laube was born in poverty to a Colorado prospecting couple in 1891. When his mother’s health failed, his father put six-year-old Clifford and his three siblings into St. Vincent’s orphanage in Denver. It was here, under the loving care of the Daughters of Charity, that Laube “breathed the atmosphere of Catholic life at its purest and best,” as he would say in later years. At the age of twelve, Laube was baptized into the Catholic Church with his father’s permission.

*** AND ***

During this time, Laube was also active in Catholic literature and arts. He was chairman of the executive board of the Catholic Poetry society of America from 1934 through 1937, and co-founder of Spirit magazine. He was elected to the Gallery of Living Catholic Authors in 1947 and was awarded honorary doctorates from Fordham University, Boston College, St. Bonaventure College, and Manhattan College.

Eastchester’s Panio escapes death, embraces life
By JOSH THOMSON THE JOURNAL NEWS
(Original publication: August 18, 2007)

***Begin Quote***

EASTCHESTER - As late Saturday became early Sunday seven months ago at Westchester Medical Center, Tony Panio lay in what could have been his deathbed.

The once strong and energetic 205-pound teenager had lost 43 pounds and could barely walk. On two occasions over the span of two weeks, he nearly had died from complications from a disorder so rare it’s difficult to diagnose.

*** AND ***

Tony, his father and his coaches decided he should take a break and attempt to regain his strength, but his condition only worsened. His father drove him to Eastchester’s Jan. 13 game against Briarcliff at Manhattan College. Panio kept the scorebook, but he had become so weak, he needed help just to get back to the car.

*** AND ****

On Wednesday, Panio and quarterback Joe LaRocca had the Eastchester football field all to themselves. Panio ran the routes and caught passes, giving no indication to the women circling the track that he nearly died or that he’s a boy living with a life-threatening disease.

“I’m not going to say he’s 100 percent,” Rich Panio said. “But he’s 205 pounds now. He works out with a dedication that in my best days, I could never have.”

***End Quote***

And, say a few prayers for a good ending.

More than a year before Yankee fans were chanting Joba Chamberlain’s name at the Stadium, he had a very different connection to city baseball - he was the losing pitcher in Manhattan College’s upset victory over Nebraska in the NCAA regionals on June 2, 2006, the biggest win in Jaspers history.

I edit the Kendall Park, NJ 08824 page and I’d like to edit the http://www.topix.net/wire/ncaa/manhattan. Frankly the stories that get automagically posted there rarely have anything to do with Manhattan College. I already run an alumni ezine and check this and many other sources daily for news that I share with my fellow alums via some topical blogs and a weekly ezine. I could make the topic shine if you let me.

{JR: Saw that. Do you need me to do something? Or did you move your subscription yourself with the self help in the BoilerPlate? And, you can move up further to work on RSS. J Yell if you need a “language downgrade” or “wat us yunguns” call “help”. P.S. Now that you’re a “rich” alum, if you can upgrade to dsl, you much be rich, when will you endow the EdP “Desk for Older Alums” here in the Jasper Jottings Newsroom? Dear Ms. Jasper Jacqueline,

Great to hear that testimonial. I find Jasper are an interesting "breed". (If I can use that politically incorrect terminology. Referring to people like cattle.)  Hopefully as a Jasper yourself, you read "my" Jasper Jottings where I capture things like this. If not, I can offer you are "free" subscription. <<I used to say it's free, until I was reprimanded by an old Curmudgeon pointing out that he was paying for a computer and access and email and that wasn't considering the value of his time. ;-)  >>   There is "no charge" for access to anyone. It's a labor of love. You know the kind of "labor you love to hate".  Of course, I'm "much younger", than Sister getting my undergraduate degree in '68 so I never knew her. But never the less, I think Jaspers always seem to leave "big shoes" to fill when they receive their eternal reward. I try to capture the essence so as to inspire our fellow alums. I know it inspires me. Thanks for the note which helps us to "see" her better.

Dear Raymond Sr.: Thanks for your comment and may I express my condolences on your son's passing. Moderation is the optional process after a comment is made that holds it for review. As with all the bozos out there as you can imagine a review is required. As a Giants fan myself, I'll never see another game without thinking of you and your son.

Best wishes,

{JR: Hope I acquitted us well. I have to say I was surprised by the comment. I didn’t have the words at hand to deal with a father in obvious pain and confusion. Parents aren’t supposed to bury the children. I can’t imagine his situation. Sort of takes the fun now out of Giant’s games for me. Glumly passed along for your consideration. }

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

http://vtcommons.org/node/826

LETTER: Highway Robbery
Submitted by Rob Williams on Sun, 08/05/2007 - 8:36pm.
NOTHING LESS THAN HIGHWAY ROBBERY

*** begin quote ***

I am fed up with the unconstitutional machinery of government system operative in this state, and in ALL others, by which government, fraudulently, and deceptively, coerces, under threat, Sovereign American Citizens, against their will, into participating with the state Motor Vehicle Department, which regulates "driving", "drivers’ licenses", plates and insurance. Rights guaranteed in the Constitutions may not be controlled, legislated, manipulated, limited, restricted, denied or taxed, in any way. However, in this country, if the Citizens do not know, claim, demand and enforce their Rights, then they have none.

*** end quote ***

I agree. Nothing like a good rant to stir the blood. Why have we ceded to the gooferment (I like the CIC’s word so much, I plagiarized it!) The roads? Why don’t we have insurance companies administrate license plates? Why don’t the gasoline companies build the roads? Everyone’s always griping about the profits. Why don’t we try private roads? I’ll bet they will be better and cheaper than the State’s. And, not some namby pamby public private partnership. Just flat out public auction in one State of all roads. Talk about the buzz over the 700 mhz spectrum auction, this would be huge!

And that’s the last word.
