3 Rescue Workers Killed at Utah Mine
Aug 17, 9:31 AM (ET)
By PAUL FOY

*** begin quote ***

HUNTINGTON, Utah (AP) - The search for six miners missing deep underground was abruptly halted after a second cave-in killed three rescue workers and injured at least six others who were trying to tunnel through rubble to reach them.

*** end quote ***

The readership know how much I am in awe of people who do the “right thing” regardless of the price they have to pay. Here are three who die trying to save six. And, they don’t know that the six are alive. It could all just be a “recovery operation” as the euphemism goes. Courage is to be afraid and do it anyway. Greater love hath no man than … …

As I often say, when my challenges come, I hope mine are a lot less demanding. Unlike my fellow alum, I’m not so sure that when so “measured” I might be a little short of perfection. I’ll probably be in the “change shorts” category.

So when I say my “now I lay me down”’s, I’ll add 9 souls. Three of who aren’t Jaspers, but certainly have exhibited the characteristics I hope I have and know my fellow alums have.

fjohn68

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

OBITS

(Memento Mori)

JObit1

JObit: Spillane, Joseph (MC???? RIP)

Staten Island Advance (New York)
August 10, 2007 Friday
JOSEPH SPILLANE, 85
SECTION: OBITS; Pg. A13
Date of Death: 08/09/2007

Marine aviator, sales engineer Joseph Spillane, 85, a retired U.S. Marine Corps major who fought in World War II and the Korean War and was active in numerous Island associations, died yesterday in Sunrise Assisted Living, Grymes Hill.

Mr. Spillane grew up in New Brighton and resided inCastleton Corners for many years. He moved to Sunnyside about eight years ago, and to Sunrise Assisted Living eight months ago.

After graduating from St. Peter’s High School, he enrolled in the two-year branch of Manhattan College. He was working as a mold loftsman at the former Bethlehem Steel Shipyard in Mariners Harbor, helping build an escort aircraft carrier, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, an event which prompted him to become a naval pilot.

He was later commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, stationed in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific.

When the war ended, Mr. Spillane was released to inactive duty, went back to Manhattan College and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.

He worked as a sales engineer for Westinghouse Electric Corp. until he was called to active duty again to serve overseas during the Korean War.

Mr. Spillane remained on inactive duty with the Marine Corps until 1956, when he retired with the rank of major, and went to work for Sylvania Electric Products as a sales engineer, later becoming a sales manager. He retired in 1988.

His call to duty transcended the military. He was a founding member of the Friends of St. Vincent’s Medical Center, West Brighton, and served as president for eight years. He also served on the hospital’s board of trustees as a member of the fund-raising committee for the Mother Loretta Bernard wing.

Mr. Spillane was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Richmond County, Golden K and served as president for a year. He served as lieutenant governor of the Metropolitan Division of the New York State District of Kiwanis International.

He also was a member of the Marine Corps League and served on the board of directors of the Fountains Co-op Apartments in Sunnyside for three years.

Mr. Spillane was a parishioner of St. Teresa’s R.C. Church, Castleton Corners, where he was a lector.

“He was very active in a lot of people’s lives and touched a lot of people,” said his daughter, Peggy Accordino. When he was not busy with his many clubs and organizations, Mr. Spillane enjoyed playing poker and reciting poetry, especially the poems of Robert W. Service.

“He was a great friend, a great father, a wonderful grandfather,” said Mrs. Accordino. “He was really a very social and fun person to be around, and a great friend.”

Mr. Spillane’s wife of 58 years, the former Mary Minogue, died in 2005.

In addition to his daughter, Peggy, surviving are his son, John; his daughters, Pat Herron and Mimi Spillane; his brothers, Dick and Gene; his sister, Mary Moore; six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Monday from the Casey Funeral Home, Castleton Corners, with a mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Teresa’s Church. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Brighton.

Heart specialist, teacher at UCF wrote ‘History of Cardiology’
Jay Hamburg The Orlando Sentinel
August 12, 2007

Dr. Louis Acierno believed in keeping busy.

The Winter Park heart specialist continued to teach at the University of Central Florida after he was 80 and stayed enthusiastic about dealing with undergraduates and conducting research.

Between helping raise a family, practicing medicine and teaching at UCF, he also found time to write History of Cardiology, said Dorothy Acierno, his wife of 59 years.

‘I didn’t know how respected my husband was until I saw the letters people sent him [on the book],’ Acierno said of her husband, who died Thursday at 87.

Acierno was born on the Lower East Side of New York City to parents who had emigrated from Italy. He graduated from Manhattan College and obtained his medical degree from Georgetown University.

After a stint in the Army, he became a clinical assistant professor of medicine at Downstate Medical School of the State University of New York in Brooklyn. He worked there for 25 years while practicing medicine in area hospitals.

In the 1970s the Aciernos spent time in Italy, where the doctor received a second degree in medicine from the University of Bologna.

After returning to the U.S., the Aciernos decided to move to Winter Park on the recommendation of a friend who lived there.

The doctor soon began working in the cardiopulmonary-sciences program in UCF, where he was a professor from 1979 to 2002. ‘He was in his niche there,’ said his wife, who was a nurse when the two met in New York.

She said her husband also wrote a book on exercise and was a strong proponent, though he didn’t always find time in his schedule for his own exercising.

Still, he lived to 87. ‘That’s because he had a good wife,’ she said. ‘Sorry, I’m making some jokes to cover my feelings.’

Other survivors include son Barry Acierno and daughter Denise Harrison, both of Winter Park; twin brother Rocco of Clearwater; and sister Marie Incao of Casselberry.

Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Carey Hand Cox-Parker Funeral Home. Funeral Mass is 10 a.m. Monday at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Winter Park.

Friends and family of late tennis-playing couple to gather at Hillside Swim Club
Friday, August 17, 2007
ADVANCE STAFF WRITER

***Begin Quote***

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A celebration of the lives of Artie and Midge Evans will take place tomorrow at Hillside Swim Club in Bulls Head as friends and family of the late couple gather for a tennis tournament in their honor.

“Both of them would be happy to know that the courts and sidelines at Hillside are filled with people they love playing tennis, sharing memories and laughing loudly in honor of their lives,” said Kerry Sullivan, a lifelong friend of the Evanses.

Artie, a legendary track star on Staten Island, was on his way to play tennis at Hillside in 2003 when he suffered a fatal heart attack behind the wheel.

He developed into a track star while he was a student at St. Peter’s Boys High School, where he set a New York City high school record for a half-mile relay leg. He later attended Manhattan College, where he anchored a two-mile relay team that set a world indoor record at the 1961 Millrose Games.

He was still a student at Manhattan when he qualified for the 1960 U.S. Olympic Trials in Palo Alto, Calif. He competed in the 800 meters at those trials, but his bid for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team came up short when he narrowly lost his semi-final heat.

He taught math at Port Richmond HS for 35 years and in his 30s he took up tennis. He became an excellent player and served as the tennis coach at Monsignor Farrell High School for several years.

After retiring, Artie and Midge played three times a week at Hillside with friends.

Midge died of leukemia last October at 64, and, like her husband, lived every day with energy, even after falling ill.

Although she was hospitalized for last year’s tournament, Midge was insistent that it be held so she could view pictures and videos of the event.

This year’s tournament starts at 10:30 a.m., and for the second consecutive year will be held in conjunction with a health fair that starts at 1 p.m.

Staten Island University Hospital will host a blood drive, Richmond Medical Center will do blood pressure screening, and the Friends of the Congressional Glaucoma Caucas Foundation will handle eye exams.

I was looking for input into my Jasper Jottings. And, saw that you have opened a business. If you’re a Jasper and interested, I’d like to report think in Jasper Jottings. (http://www.jasperjottings.com)

I’d like to have your real name and class year. Can’t guaranty any sales, but then it doesn’t cost anything to put a message in front of a guestimated 1500 of our fellow alums.

Here’s my info so you know I’m not some crazed fellow you’d see on NBC’s “to catch a “predator”. :-) I troll a lot of social networks to find Jasper to feature in my JFound section.

Ferdinand,

That’s great that you found me! I receive your Jasper Jottings in my emails, so I have heard of you before. That’s great! Thank you for offering to put me in your jottings.

I went to Manhattan College from 2002-2004. I was a Biology major and I was cheerleader for the Manhattan Jaspers! I love MC!

So now I’m home in Albany, no, and I do a variety of things. I sell Partite Candles, Lie Sophia Jewelry, and now I just received my NYS License to sell Life Insurance. I will in the near future go on to obtain my Federal Securities License in order to set up Mutual Funds, Annuities and such. I also have my Mortgage and Banking License as well as the others to work for Primerica, a division of Citigroup. I am a Financial Advisor. If you would like to include in the jottings, I will offer those who are interested a COMPLIMENTARY Financial Needs Analysis. This is where I could take a look at their finances and set up a plan that could save them money, possibly earn more interest on their savings, and get them started to save and get where they want for retirement. We also do Refinancing, Mortgages and Consolidations for those who are eligible.

If you would like to include all of my businesses that’s fine, but if not, I am very serious about Primerica. The Partylite and Lia Sophia things I do on the side. I will sometime soon have some info on my myspace page about Primerica…so I will keep you updated on that.

My contact information is:
Melissa A. Fox
Albany, NY 12205

I have two myspace names:

www.myspace.com/candlesmf

www.myspace.com/jewelrymf

For Lia Sophia:

www.liasophia.com/melissafox

So thank you again, if you need anything else…please feel free to contact me!

Sincerely,
Melissa A. Fox

Dear CIC,

I thought you might like to know that Stefanie Guitierrez, who contacted you recently, was at Choices in Long Island City as a sidewalk counselor last Saturday.  She was able to help two women make the decision to keep their children.  Thanks for encouraging her in this vital effort.

{JR: My part was a very modest contribution to the effort. Perhaps someday, we will have freedom and liberty in this country again. The law is a very crude tool for sensitive personal issue. As I always say I am a Pro-Lfe Pro-Choice Libertarian. Sounds strange, but in my mind I can see how all those things align in a world without the initiation of force (i.e., gooferment’s ham handed efforts to control us). Glad I could help.}

Have a Jasper Jottings news blog http://jasperjottings-daily.com/ and a Jasper Jottings sports blog http://jasperjottings-sports.com/. The advantage of these is that it's not overwhelming. Both have rss feeds that can become a daily email.

GIULIANI’S LEARNING CURVE

***Begin Quote***

For example, rather than lunching with a local functionary in Greenfield during his five-stop, one day tour, Giuliani lunched with an old friend from New York City, Gene Hart. Hart lives out in Omaha, Nebraska, but he went to Manhattan College with Giuliani, and made plans to drive all the way to Greenfield to meet him for lunch. “We go back to 1962,” he said. And so the tiny Greenfield event began with Giuliani quietly lunching with someone not from Iowa, while his New York staff sat at the diner’s counter, eating pie a la mode and thumbing their BlackBerries. “He’s not doing speeches,” Loren Knauss, a Pottawattamie County Supervisor and Giuliani’s Southwest regional chair, explained. “He’s just coming in to shake hands.” After lunch, Giuliani, dressed as if heading to a natty reception in the Hamptons, shook hands with the small number of locals in the diner, then sat and methodically autographed campaign fliers while taking questions from a table full of people that included a local reporter and a representative from the advocacy group Iowans for Sensible Priorities, which has been dogging all the candidates. Including Giuliani, the group numbered less than 10. Giuliani discussed the threat of a nuclear Iran, earmarks, gun policy, and infrastructure investment, and also exclaimed over the amount of corn he’d seen on the way to the rural town on a road that passed between fields. Is it the ethanol biofuel that’s driving all this corn? he asked. The Iowans politely said they didn’t think so. And wasn’t the harvest date “pretty soon”? Giualiani further inquired. The Iowans informed him that it wouldn’t be until November. Sensing they might think him a rube, the former mayor quickly explained that on Long Island, “they pick it about now, in late August.”

“Due credit for hours, days and weeks of work in the preparation of this pamphlet must be given to those who have contributed their time and abilities so generously,” a postscript says. “The tremendous amount of research that goes into a booklet such as this, is to a large measure the effort of Rev. John Slivka, pastor of St. Nicholas of Myra Church in Yonkers. To Brother Aurelian Thomas, F.S.C., of the faculty of Manhattan College, must be given the credit for organizing the research material, and last but not least, to the volunteers of the staff of Our Lady of Peace Library for sacrificing many evenings to the work. All have given out of love of Holy Mother Church.”

Some Crazy Basketball stories

REFEREE HAZARD

In Second round of the 1992 National Invention Tournament, Manhattan College took on the Rutgers University Scarlet Knights in a big college match up. The game was a hard-fought contest, but it looked as if the Rutgers would emerge the winner, as the Knights led 61-60 with 13 seconds remaining and also had possession of the ball out of bounds.

Rutgers’ Creighton Drury did the in bounding honors.

He saw the Knights’ top score. Steve Worthy, break into the open and tossed him the ball. Worthy could have gone in for a breakaway lay-up but chose instead to run around and dribble away the seconds on the clock.

Unfortunately, one of the officials didn’t see worthy change direction and got in his way. Worthy and the official almost collided, and the ball bounced off the official and rolled free.

Rutgers and Manhattan players dove for the ball, and it was ruled a held ball. The possession arrow favored the Manhattan Jaspers, and they got possession with seven seconds remaining. The Jaspers’ Chris Williams took the inbound pass, dribbled the length of the court, and made a basket to give Manhattan a 62-61 lead with one second remaining. Manhattan went on to win the game, and Rutgers was eliminated from the 1992 NIT with a little help from a referee who was in the wrong place at the wrong time.

POOR AND UNEDUCATED, LIKE WE THOUGHT
Ted Rall

*** begin quote ***

There are, of course, intelligent, well-educated children of wealthy parents serving in the military. But they are the exception, not the rule. If Afghanistan and Iraq are, as the Bush Administration argues, central fronts in the war on terror, which is a war for hearts and minds, we ought to be sending our best-prepared, most presentable representatives of American society abroad as personal ambassadors. Our decision not to pay the higher salaries and benefits that would lure those men and women out of the civilian workforce belies those claims.

*** end quote ***

I don’t know what the demographics are, but I do know that there is no good reason for “nation building”. As far as the “war on terror” — how one has a war on a tactic I don’t understand — goes, it would seem that killing folks who certain tend to annoy their relatives. I can visualize the “pleasantries” that would go on if say Communist China started policing NYC. It would be amusing to see the local militia (the drug gangs) join forces with the police to attack a common foe. Why should it be different half a globe away? Bring the boys and girls home by the first thing heading this way. Return to George Washington’s foreign policy. End the phony war on terror – drugs – whatever. Pardon the non-violent drug offenders. And, MYOB. We all be a lot freeer, safer, and better off.

And that’s the last word.
