The aim of an argument or discussion should not be victory, but progress. - -- Joseph Joubert |
The recent bridge collapse should be both inspiring and infuriating. Inspiring in the many stories of hero’s stepping out of the crowd to help their fellow human being. Often at some personal risk. Infuriating in that the situation was allowed to persist. Roads and bridges are too important to be left to politicians and politics. It’s interesting that Chinese executed their ex-FDA chief when tainted food killed people. Yet, no “transportation bureaucrat” was held accountable for this failure. I heard a lot of speeches, but little action. I hope none of us is on or under the next “gooferment failure”. Maybe someday we’ll learn a lesson. I am sure the Universe will keep trying to teach us that lesson. p.s.: I pinched a nerve in my neck so I’m throttling back my pace this week to give it chance to heal. |
Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" |

JNEWS: Paul Quirke (MC????) San Jose Mercury News (California) Six years ago, at his father’s request, Colin Quirke quit youth baseball. Some in this town may find that unthinkable, but his dad’s
next idea - that Colin join the But it didn’t stop there. Last spring, as a “(The Junior Olympics) made me realize this was something I could do,” Colin, 17, recalled recently. “It made me determined to come back the next year and do better … and the next year, and the next year.” The sport was a natural fit for Colin, who has explosive
strength and a stocky build. His dad, Paul Quirke, did not pick the sport at
random: Paul, an Irish native, is a former Olympic shot putter for Team This summer, Colin - who has a mop of dark hair, a big
smile and teenage chin stubble - solidified the Quirke name as an Irish
powerhouse. The dual Irish-American citizen competed in “They all said, `The Irish record holder’s son is coming back and kicking everyone’s butt,’ ” Paul, 44, said proudly. The victories have not been easy for Colin, who has had a slew of injuries in recent years. As a freshman, he tore cartilage in his left wrist in a dirt biking accident; last fall, he spent a nearly month in the hospital after a severe concussion in a Los Gatos High football game. He has dislocated a wrist, hurt his back and currently has a torn groin muscle. Colin dismissed the injuries as annoyances, and he remains remarkably upbeat. “I’m not missing a finger or anything,” he said of the time he crushed his left hand in football practice, dislocating four fingers. Known for his insatiable work ethic, Colin trains every day alongside his dad at the Los Gatos Athletic Club. The two recently sat down for an interview with the Los Gatos Weekly-Times at the club, where the thundering duo appeared to make the ground tilt on entering the room. Paul is 6-foot-3, 240 pounds, and looks like he has football pads under his skin; Colin is 6-foot-4, 240 pounds, with a wide, chiseled face and bulging biceps. “I’ve seen him bench 455,” His strength and dedication do not surprise everyone, though. “Colin is a hard worker, and he truly has a feel for (the sport),” said Los Gatos High shot put and discus coach Ron McKee. “He knows what the shot put is about; a lot of kids don’t.” These instincts were formed in his track and field-obsessed household. Paul, who left Dublin at age 18 for a track scholarship at Manhattan College in New York City, moved to San Jose in 1988, the “Mecca” of track and field training, he said. At the time, national and world champions flocked to the area for top-tier track meets, college programs and facilities. Paul, a real estate agent, competed in these meets, and befriended track stars from across the globe, many of whom came to the house for barbecues. “I just grew up around it,” Colin said. “When I was a kid I’d be at the meets with my dad, and I’d play around with the shot sometimes.” After C.T. English, he made the Los Gatos High varsity
track and field team as a freshman. He competed in the U.S. Junior Olympics
every year until this summer, when, after conquering For now, Colin is gearing up for the high school track
season next spring. He also wants to compete in the World Junior
Championships, to be held in But he still has unfinished business in Ireland, where the Quirkes trace their lineage at least 500 years, as evidenced by the family’s medieval-era farm in the Irish midlands. Paul, whose son bested him in the under-18 record books, still holds the country’s overall shot put record. “He’ll break that just to piss me off,” Paul said smiling. JNEWS: James Dauterman (MC1959) The New York Times IN a hidden courtyard at the Bronx Zoo on a recent weekday, Ruth Iannuzzi soaped and scrubbed, then hugged, Alexander, 5, and Balkor, 3, a couple of two-humped camels from Asia who have had visitors doing double takes since they arrived at the zoo two years ago. After Ms. Iannuzzi bathed her Bactrians, as the two-humped camels are known, she dressed them. ”These are the first two-humped camels we’ve had here in
about 50 years,” said Ms. Iannuzzi, placing a
decorative blanket and matching headdress on Alexander. ”Before they came
along, we had only single-humped camels, from Ms. Iannuzzi, 45, of ”I found some great fabric to make blankets and sweaters for all of my camels,” she said. ”Alexander and Balkor looked so handsome in the outfits they wore to our last cocktail party.” That was on June 19, when zoo staff members and some of their furry friends had a party for David T. Schiff, the retiring chairman of the Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs the zoo. The invited guests included Alexander and Balkor, who are roughly seven feet tall at the top of their hairy humps and weigh about 700 pounds, as well as a sloth, a baby wallaby and a fennec fox. ”It was a great party,” Ms. Iannuzzi said. ”Everyone had a great time.” Ms. Iannuzzi, who has a degree
in anthropology from Lehman College, shares camel duties with James Dauterman, 40, who is also from Yonkers, with a degree in
biology from the College of Mount St. Vincent. He also has a finance degree
from By late afternoon, Ms. Iannuzzi and Mr. Dauterman began packing away soaps, brushes, shedding blades, hoses, pails, spray bottles and even a squeegee. Minutes later, they escorted Alexander and Balkor from the courtyard to a grassy, sun-splashed area complete with wading pool and sand pit, in full view of the public. ”After taking a bath, my guys love to roll around in the sand pit,” Ms. Iannuzzi said. ”That’s why I never send them out here in fancy clothes.” DATE: August 7, 2007 # # # {MikeMcE reports: Dear John, The NY Times, 8/7/07 at page B2 has an article Camels in the Bronx Zoo and names one of the keepers as James Dauterman ‘59. Dear Jasper John; You wrote on August 4th: Everyone knows I'm a
wacko little L libertarian, but I'd point out you don't hear about bridge
collapses in DisneyLand or I'm pleased that so
many souls got away. Like when the CA earthquakes pancaked
the freeways, or in the WTC collapse, I'm astonished that the death toll
wasn't higher. I'll add a "thanks" when I say my "now I lay me
down" tonight. And, rant some more tomorrow about the "gooferment
protection". I suggest you look at the website before you broadcast your statement too broadly. Following is a list of just the fatal accidents on amusement park rides between 1972 and 1997. A full listing of all accidents since 1972 can be found on the website. It's my guess that without "gooferment" regulation their lists would be a lot longer. There have been accidents at Disney facilities. Sincerely yours, {JR: And, a list of all the accidents were included. Without trying to stir up a hornet’s nest, my “guess” to use the parlance of the email is that since the Amusement Parks are incentivized not to kill their patrons, they’d do a better job than the “gooferment” who incentives are different. I still maintain that the gooferment can’t do anything right, since these accidents happen with gooferment regulation. J Seriously, Don61 and I are never going to agree on the gooferment topic. He’s a fan and I’m not. With respect to the fatalities, I’m sure that the Amusement Park employees suffered more that the gooferment employees. I haven’t heard of any bureaucrats being fired or indicted. And, I’m not expect such anytime soon. } |
Hi John, Really enjoy reading the jottings, I'm class of 82'. I saw the article by Bob Shryock regarding the point shaving scandals of the 50's and he's right, there were two Jaspers, Henry Poppe and Jack Byrnes. But he left out the real story, Jasper Junius Kellogg who blew the whole thing apart by doing the right thing. My dad, class of 55', Ed O'Connor, roomed and played with Junius and continued to be good friends throughout their lives. I remember Junius crushing my hand as a 7 year old, meeting him in the old gym. Rob Robert E. O'Connor {JR: Yup, I remember hearing that now that you mention it. Thanks for sharing a great memory. } |
