5th Body Found in Minn. Bridge Debris
Aug 3, 9:03 AM (ET)
By HENRY C. JACKSON

*** begin quote ***

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Fears that an interstate bridge collapse might produce dozens of deaths eased Friday as authorities said the number of missing, once thought to be as many as 30, was just eight.

*** end quote ***

Wow, the Intelligent Designer sure gave us a pass on what surly could have been a “interesting” sandwich.

As an injineer, I am embarrassed for my profession. Bridges are supposed to be falling down. Certainly not onc or two a decade! I know that the politicians and bureaucrats are to blame. We the People have to share the blame for allowing these fellows to escape their responsibilities.

If I was the President, I’d fire the head of the Federal DOT. If I was the Minnesota Guv, I’d fire the MinnDOT head. If I was the two mayors, I’d fire their respective roads guys. I don’t want to hear the excuses. Betcha everyone will start pay attention to business.

Everyone knows I’m a wacko little L libertarian, but I’d point out you don’t hear about bridge collapses in DisneyLand or DisneyWorld. Everything is better when the truly private sector does it. And I’m not talking about the “regulated private sector” which is nothing more than Facism.

I’m pleased that so many souls got away. Like when the CA earthquakes pancaked the freeways, or in the WTC collapse, I’m astonished that the death toll wasn’t higher. I’ll add a “thanks” when I say my “now I lay me down” tonight. And, rant some more tomorrow about the “gooferment protection”.

fjohn

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Edward W. Buckley

May 7, 1917 - July 18, 2007

Edward Walter Buckley (Bud), 90, passed away on Wednesday, July 18th at his home on Stewart Ave. He was pre-deceased by his wife, Catherine Masterson in 1984. He was born and raised on the west side of Manhattan. Mr. Buckley was a resident of Garden City for 53 years, and a resident of Mattituck, NY for over 30 years. He had been a member of Cherry Valley and a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church where his three children attended grammar school. He was a graduate of Manhattan College and proud member of the Jasper basketball team. He was a retired FBI Agent who worked out of the Manhattan office, and then the Garden City office. He then became the Director of Security at Paine Webber and retired in 1984. After retiring he became an arbitrator for the New York Stock Exchange for over ten years.

Mr. Buckley was the loving father of Shelia George of Garden City , Rosemary McDermott of Garden City and Dennis Buckley of Doylestown PA, a former resident of Garden City . Father-in-law to Raymond George, Jr., Thomas McDermott and Ellen Buckley. He had seven grandchildren to whom he was known affectionately as “Peaka,” Colleen Tariche, her husband, Rey of Garden City, Raymond George, his wife Cynthia, of Garden City, Katie McDermott, her fiancé David Laufer of Manhattan, Ryan McDermott and his wife Kimberly of Rochester, NY, Patrick Buckley and his wife Kathy of Pennsylvania, Kevin Buckley, of Hoboken, NJ and Megan Buckley of Manhattan. He had eight great-grandchildren, Connor, Nicole, and Sean Tariche, Cody, Taylor, Madison and Lauren George and Kullen McDermott. Mr. Buckley loved living in Garden City, and raising his three children on Brook Street, where he had made life long friends. He also enjoyed watching his grandchildren and great-grand children grow up here.

Always known as a “gentleman” to those who knew him, he had a unique talent for never forgetting any ones name which was known by everyone who met him.

He will be greatly missed and forever in our hearts.

We love you, Dad / Peaka.

Arrangements were by Fairchild Funeral Home. The funeral took place at St. Joseph’s Church on Monday, July 23.

Robert Perry Named Managing Partner of King & Spalding’s New York Office
30 Jul 2007

***Begin Quote***

NEW YORK, July 30, 2007–King & Spalding, a leading international law firm, announced today that Robert F. Perry, 49, has been appointed managing partner of its New York office. He replaces Michael J. O’Brien, who resigned from the firm.

A noted patent litigator with extensive experience in electrical and computer engineering, Perry joined King & Spalding’s New York office as a partner in August 2004 from Kenyon & Kenyon, where he was a member of its management committee. Perry has been instrumental in expanding King & Spalding’s intellectual property practice in New York, especially in the areas of patent litigation and patent prosecution.

In his new role as managing partner, Perry will oversee the firm’s New York office.

Commenting on his own appointment, Perry said: “I am honored to be asked to manage the firm’s New York office. I look forward to building on our strong foundation. We will continue to develop our practices of corporate/private equity, real estate capital markets, finance, financial restructuring, intellectual property, securities/business litigation, international arbitration and professional services liability. We will also explore opportunities in further service areas. We are enthusiastic about the many opportunities before the firm as a whole and I expect the New York office to continue to be at the center of many of them.”

Robert D. Hays, Jr., chairman of King & Spalding, said: “We are proud to have Bob’s capabilities and leadership skills as part of the firm’s management team. This is an exciting time for King & Spalding, which is in a strong expansion phase. We opened three new offices in the past year and have added 52 lawyers, including 8 partners, in New York in the past 18 months. Bob is committed to driving forward our key initiatives and growth.”

In July 2007, King & Spalding opened an office in Charlotte, North Carolina, its third new office in the last year and its eighth worldwide location. This latest expansion came on the heels of its strong performance in 2006, with double-digit growth in revenue and profits per partner. The firm also opened an office in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in December 2006, and in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in April of this year.

Perry earned a B.E.E. from Manhattan College in 1979, an M.B.A. from Seton Hall University in 1984 and a J.D. from Seton Hall Law School, magna cum laude, in 1989.

King & Spalding’s New York office employs 130 lawyers practicing in a variety of areas including banking, business litigation, corporate finance, energy, financial restructuring, intellectual property, Islamic finance, mergers and acquisitions, private equity, tax and real estate, among others.

About King & Spalding

King & Spalding is an international law firm with more than 800 lawyers in Atlanta, Charlotte, Dubai, Houston, London, New York, Riyadh (affiliated office) and Washington, D.C. The firm represents half of the Fortune 100, and in a Corporate Counsel survey in August 2006 ranked as one of the top ten firms representing Fortune 250 companies overall. Goshen — The Orange County Genealogical Society (www.ocgsny.org) will present a program: “The Settlers of the Beekman Patent, Dutchess County, New York, An Historical and Genealogical Study of all the 18th Century Settlers in the Patent” by the author, Frank J. Doherty, on Saturday, Aug. 4, at 10:30 a.m. The Society is located at 1841 Historic Courthouse, 101 Main Street, in Goshen.

Frank J. Doherty was raised in Putnam County, N.Y., and attended Carmel schools and graduated from Manhattan College in New York City. In 1971 he and his wife purchased the Buck farm in LaGrange, part of the original Beekman Patent, and he began an historical quest to find out what could be learned about the ancestry of the house. In 1990 he published the first volume of his series. Volume 1: Historical Records.

In 1992, he began the second phase of the work, compiling the genealogies of all the 18th century resident surnames in the Patent, over 1300 in all. He has just published the eighth of these volumes. His Web site has available the books, data CDs of the books, and family chapters on over 450 families, plus requests for help on families yet to be published. www.beekmansettlers.com.

A regular monthly meeting will be held at 9 a.m., followed by the program at 10:30 a.m. The meeting and program are free of charge and open to the public. The research room will be open following the program, from Noon until 4 p.m.

3 Port Authority bridges on Island get new GM
Tuesday, July 31, 2007
By MAURA YATES ADVANCE STAFF WRITER

***Begin Quote***

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — A new general manager has been named at the Port Authority’s three Staten Island bridges, and he has quite a unique office.

Paul Pittari will report for duty at his new post high above the Goethals Bridge toll plaza later in August.

There, he will have a bird’s-eye view of all the comings and goings of more than 26 million vehicles a year.

Pittari also will oversee the total day-to-day operations of the Outerbridge Crossing and the Bayonne Bridge, which he said is the nicest from an aesthetic perspective, but was quick not to pick a favorite.

The Island’s Port Authority-owned crossings are undergoing a study to determine if all-electronic high-speed tolling can be implemented in the place of toll takers. The Goethals is also in the middle of a study to determine the future of the nearly 80-year-old span, which is due to be replaced. The draft environmental impact study for the Goethals Replacement Project is tentatively scheduled to be released by the U.S. Coast Guard next spring.

“It’s coming at an interesting time,” Pittari said of his new appointment. “I’m really looking forward to it.”

The new general manager will replace Jerry DelTufo, who has taken a new position at the Port Authority-owned World Trade Center.

Pittari has plenty of bridge experience under his belt, having served as Physical Plant Manager of the Port Authority’s three Staten Island spans from 2003 until last year, when he was named Chief of Maintenance at the PA’s New Jersey Marine Terminals.

Pittari, 38, a graduate of Manhattan College, holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering. He is a licensed professional engineer in both New York and New Jersey.

He lives in Clark, N.J. with his wife, Jennifer, and their three children.

A Masterful Mishmash — One-of-a-Kind Collection of Short Stories and Essays Presents a Powerful Reading Experience

SECTION: PRODUCT / SERVICES ANNOUNCEMENT

PALM SPRINGS, Calif., July 31, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) — Readers looking for a unique, powerful reading experience will likely find what they are looking for in a masterful book that hits the bookstores this month. In The Astonishment of the Heart (Paperback $ 21.99), a new release by Xlibris Publishing, acclaimed poet and author Edward Proffitt assembles a staggering collection of deep-meaning short stories and essays, each exploring the essence of life in its own little way.

In this sterling collection, Proffitt casts his perceptive, intelligent eye on human nature, exploring its deepest corners as he presents a masterful mix of stories and essays that will no doubt make a lasting impression on the mind of the reader. In the story “Tiny Tim Redux,” for instance, the author makes an unusual twist on Dickens’s a “Christmas Carol”. In the essay “Little Things Mean A Lot” he details the little insanities of the Nazis, which add up to mean a lot.

About the Author

A full professor at Manhattan College, now retired and living in Palm Springs, Dr. Edward Proffitt began his writing career as a poet in late adolescence, at the time of his first coming out. Born in 1938, he experienced the horror of being gay in the ’50s and early ’60s. The demeaning situation “inverts” had to endure led him to enter psychotherapy and later to marry.

He remained married for nearly thirty years, during which time he fathered two children and published extensively. However, because Errato had fled, he wrote no more poetry until after his second coming out at the end of the nineties, when the poems of both Homo Erectus (his first book of poems) and then Ecce Homo poured out. Now he has returned to prose: stories, essays, novellas, and a forth-coming novel.

{JR: I’m “publishing” whatever Jaspers feel is … important. Such as this item. It was moving. As anyone can see, I have a very few, but high, standards. Original content OK! Nothing obviously wrong, embarrassing, or inconsistent with the values of Manhattan College Jaspers. (Sometimes as editor I fix obvious typos.) I usually draw the line at blatant sales pitches, Multi Level Marketing, or “forwarded content”. Hope this meets with everyone’s approval. Disputes I refer to my “editorial board” (e.g., Mike; Doc Dans; myself). }

A Special Retreat Weekend

September 21-23, 2007

This year is the sixteenth anniversary of the Reality Retreat at the Passionist Spiritual Center. The founding purpose of these retreats is bringing men in business together for 36 hours to listen to gifted speakers make presentations centered on an annual theme. Over the years, more than 50 speakers including CEOs, presidents of universities, government officials, psychologists and clergy have made these presentations. We then provide an opportunity for the those attending to discuss possible solutions to the difficulties and obstacles we all face in trying to live successful and spiritually fulfilling lives. It is amazing when each retreatant realizes that he is not alone with his problems but finds compassion, camaraderie, and friendship with the other retreatants. This year’s theme is Living Life (I ain’t dead yet) – sounds easy but to you really live life or just go from one task to the next and never think about where you are headed? The word retreat conjuresup the of your school days but the Reality Retreat is unlike any you have made before. Some join us for a life changing 36 hours, from Friday at 6:00 p.m. to Sunday at noon, September 21-23, 2007.

There are private rooms for each retreatant, delicious meals and a placid environment that lends itself to contemplation, discussion and personal renewal.

Contact the following Retreat Team Members for more information:

Tom Connolly’s Fraud Case

***Begin Quote***

The first Chapter written on Connolly’s escapades goes back to his days as a Democrat. Tom needed a job and bugged people in the party until he got himself a job in Troy as a Purchasing Agent in 1986, a Civil Service position. He managed to get the job by falsifying a job application checking, YES to the question regarding graduating from a 4 year college when in fact he had not. He stated on the application he had received a B.S. degree from Manhattan College graduating in 1980. The Troy Record reported the story on 3/24/94 and also added that a college official whose father’s name was coincidentally, Tom Connolly, could not remember anyone working at the college by that name as Connolly also claimed to the Record. So Tom managed to get a job he did not qualify for by lying, thereby screwing someone who did qualify out of the job. Now that sounds more like a case of fraud to the Pipeline.

I’m confused. He’s a Jasper or not. And, what’s the MC connection? A phone book. A relative. Something else?

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

*** begin quote ***

The Military Order of the Purple Heart got it right when it stated that for the first time in history, HR 2640 "would statutorily impose a lifetime gun ban on battle-scarred veterans."

The Military Order of the Purple Heart, which is chartered by Congress, is urging the DEFEAT of HR 2640, the Brady-expansion legislation introduced by anti-gun Rep. Carolyn McCarthy.

Despite what you may have heard elsewhere, this bill THREATENS gun owners' rights and represents one of the biggest gun bans in history.

A recent case in Pennsylvania shows how easily a gun owner can be slapped with a LIFETIME gun ban, without any due process, based solely on a mere accusation by a shrink or other "lawful authority."

All the background checks in the world will NOT stop bad guys from getting firearms. Severe restrictions in Washington, DC, England, Canada, Germany and other places have not stopped evil people from using guns to commit murder.

*** end quote ***

The gooferment doesn’t want an armed population. When one infringes on rights, it’s nice to have the victims helpless. Visualize pre-ww2 Germany when the Nazis went door to door to take helpless Jews and others to the camps, that the “helpless” weren’t so helpless. Even if at each apartment one thug was lost to hostile fire, there would be a severe shortage of thugs. Even bullies are not stupid. Break into this apartment and I might get killed. Even if every apartment isn’t armed, who’s going to take the change that it is. It’s the “mix some sheep dogs in with the sheep” argument. I’ve seen estimate that say 1 in a 100 Americans are armed. That’s why unlike England and Australia, our criminals prefer robbing unoccupied dwellings. No imagine that there are NO rules on concealed carry. Bet the violent crime rate drops to zero. Eliminate the phony “war on drugs” and, like Prohibition, there’s no reason for rival gangs to fight over turf.

So your gooferement places us all at risk. And, they’d like to make oppression safe by keeping guns out of veteran’s hands. After all, once a trained killer, always a trained killer. The gooferment should be afraid of the people. Very afraid!

And that’s the last word.

Curmudgeon
