Raw: Good Samaritans Rescue Family from Overturned Truck

Well, the rescuers probably were NOT putting their own lives at risk, but they might have been doing so. The way those guys were jumping into the water, there was no way they ‘knew” they weren’t at risk. So you have to have the stones to see what you perceive as “your duty” and go do it. I hope my challenges are much smaller.

John J. Goodwin

GOODWIN John J. Goodwin, age 75, of Huntington, beloved husband of Theresa Lavelle Goodwin, passed away on July 22, 2007 in Yale New Haven Hospital. Born to the late John and Helen McCloskey Goodwin, and raised in Queens, New York, Jack had lived in the Metro New York region, residing in Bedford Village, New York for 30 years before moving to Huntington 9 years ago. He was a graduate of Manhattan College and St. John’s Law School. A member of the New York Bar , he was registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark office. Jack worked as a patent attorney for IBM for 31 years and Perman & Green, LLP in Fairfield for 11 years before his retirement. Naturally athletic, Jack enjoyed playing basketball, golf, and swimming. While in high school, Jack would take summer trips to Rockaway, where he had many opportunities to play basketball with a number of the NBA Pro players of that time. He was talented in photography and creative writing, with several pieces publicly recognized. Most of all, Jack liked to be involved. Whether its was participating in St. Lawrence Church’s Men of St. Joseph, helping a family member or friend in need, or just spending time with the important people in his life, Jack’s quick witted sense of humor and ability to tell stories made him a joy to be around. His warm and lasting impression will continue to be embraced by all who knew him. In addition to his devoted wife of almost 50 years, he will be lovingly remembered by his children, Kathleen Falcona, and her husband, Samuel, of Houston, TX, Michael Goodwin, and his wife, Carol, of South Windsor, Brian Goodwin, of Jersey City, NJ; four grandchildren, Gavin and Ryan Falcona, Christopher and Kirsten Goodwin; one brother in law, Thomas Lavelle, of Bimidji, Minn; two nieces. He was predeceased by his sister, Alice Goodwin, and one nephew. Calling hours are Wednesday from 4 to 8 PM in the Lesko & Polke Funeral Home, 1209 Post Road, in Fairfield Center. His Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Thursday at 10 AM directly in St. Lawrence Church, 505 Shelton Avenue in Huntington Center, with Jack’s dear friend Father Donald McQuade officiating. After a brief reception in the Church hall, interment will follow in St. John’s Cemetery in Queens, New York. Memorial gifts may be made to: St. Jude Childrens Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942. To sign an online register, visit www. Leskopolkefuneralhome.com.

Following the music

Barry Drake, who divides his time between Delray Beach and New York’s Catskills region, says music best defines the changes of the 1960s. It was music that sparked his occupation — lecturing on the history of rock ‘n’ roll to students across the country.

Drake was a student at Manhattan College from 1962 through 1967, but spent most of his time playing in Greenwich Village clubs and coffeehouses.

“When the hippie movement emerged from the end of the beatnik/folk music scene, I was right there to participate in the early days of what was being called the counterculture,” says Drake.

Until the 1960s, he says, record companies dictated the kinds of music we listened to. “So when one band succeeded, they signed 40 more just like it.”

But artists like Bob Dylan were not going to take direction from anyone.

“It was a sort of musical civil rights movement,” says Drake, who lived in San Francisco during the summer of 1967 and attended the Monterey Pop Festival. “The one word that everyone leaves out of the hippie movement is the desire for freedom, not to be told what to do. It wasn’t just music, drugs and long hair. It all stems from the freedom to do your own thing. By the end of the ’60s, we ended the war in Vietnam, we ended the draft, we got 18-year-olds to vote and Richard Nixon was driven from the White House.”

NEW YORK HOOP SCHEMES

Previous basketball scandals focused on the players, who were seduced from the college ranks.

Both of the two widespread point-shaving revelations that shook college basketball were traced to New York gamblers and prosecuted by the office of Manhattan District Attorney Frank Hogan. The first, which broke in 1951, caused the de-emphasis of the sport at City College, which had won both the NCAA and NIT championships in 1950, and at Long Island University. It also touched the programs at New York University and Manhattan College as well as national powers Kentucky and Bradley.

Realizing I was gay in those years was one of the toughest things I had to go through. I knew it wasn’t a sin–I wasn’t delusional–but I also knew I was stuck, with no one to talk to about it. One person I finally confided in was a college professor who I knew to be gay himself. As I am publishing these reflections online, I won’t go into specifics about him or the other people I told I was gay, including fellow Brothers, but it was very much a helpful process for me. Unfortunately for my professor, he wasn’t so lucky. His letters to me were intercepted unbeknownst to me–either before I read them (re-sealed?) or after I had read them and stolen from my room. After I left–I found out later–the Brothers of my community went to see the President of Manhattan College, Brother Thomas Scanlan. They reported the letters to him and attempted to get my teacher friend fired. They never showed any real concern, any real Christian love for me, but instead took their warped minds to the campus of Manhattan College and tried to ruin the life of one of the only people who treated me decently. They failed and have since started sending their young Brothers to a different college, thereby restoring decency and honor to my beloved college. Ahh…catharsis.

The Military Order of the Purple Heart got it right when it stated that for the first time in history, HR 2640 "would statutorily impose a lifetime gun ban on battle-scarred veterans."

The Military Order of the Purple Heart, which is chartered by Congress, is urging the DEFEAT of HR 2640, the Brady-expansion legislation introduced by anti-gun Rep. Carolyn McCarthy.

Despite what you may have heard elsewhere, this bill THREATENS gun owners' rights and represents one of the biggest gun bans in history.

A recent case in Pennsylvania shows how easily a gun owner can be slapped with a LIFETIME gun ban, without any due process, based solely on a mere accusation by a shrink or other "lawful authority."

All the background checks in the world will NOT stop bad guys from getting firearms. Severe restrictions in Washington, DC, England, Canada, Germany and other places have not stopped evil people from using guns to commit murder.

The gooferment doesn’t want an armed population. When one infringes on rights, it’s nice to have the victims helpless. Visualize pre-ww2 Germany when the Nazis went door to door to take helpless Jews and others to the camps, that the “helpless” weren’t so helpless. Even if at each apartment one thug was lost to hostile fire, there would be a severe shortage of thugs. Even bullies are not stupid. Break into this apartment and I might get killed. Even if every apartment isn’t armed, who’s going to take the change that it is. It’s the “mix some sheep dogs in with the sheep” argument. I’ve seen estimate that say 1 in a 100 Americans are armed. That’s why unlike England and Australia, our criminals prefer robbing unoccupied dwellings. No imagine that there are NO rules on concealed carry. Bet the violent crime rate drops to zero. Eliminate the phony “war on drugs” and, like Prohibition, there’s no reason for rival gangs to fight over turf.

So your gooferement places us all at risk. And, they’d like to make oppression safe by keeping guns out of veteran’s hands. After all, once a trained killer, always a trained killer. The gooferment should be afraid of the people. Very afraid!

And that’s the last word.
