Cheerful Giving
Tuesday, July 10, 2007

*** begin quote ***

Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. (2 Corinthians 9:7)

Genuine giving can be a very hard thing to do, especially when talking about money and finances. The Gospels make this abundantly clear with the story of the rich young ruler. I remember attending a church where the tithes were brought forward to the altar and being tempted to come carrying an empty envelope on several occasions.

*** end quote ***

Life’s a funny thing. This triggered a memory about “donations”. I remember selling “indulgences” at the behest of the Christian Brothers. Thinking about the “empty envelope”, it’s hard to donate to Holy Mother Church knowing that some part of it is going to pay for the pedophile’s victims. But, in the end, donations are not only good for the receiver. They are good for the giver. It’s probably taken me a long time to learn that lesson. My fellow alums probably picked it up a lot sooner. Being the giver allows you to “pay back” people who helped you along the way to where you are today. “Pay It Forward”, “dig your well before your thirsty”, and “what goes around comes around” are all from the same genre of advice. It gets you out of the “Scarcity” meme and into the “Abundance” meme. And, of course, I’ve received so much, I have to balance the scale to get thru the “camel’s eye”, “needle’s eye”, or whatever eye is at the Final Judgement. But maybe I’m not too rich to get through that gate!

fjohn68

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Robert J.H. (Bob) Goldman

GOLDMAN, Robert J.H. (Bob) - Born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada in July 1916, and immigrated to the US with his family when he was 16. He graduated from Stuyvesant High School in New York and enrolled in NYU School of Engineering, earning a certificate in mechanical engineering. He also took engineering courses at Manhattan College and Pratt Institute. His first engineering job was with Gibbs and Cox Naval Architects, whose “pride and joy” was the ocean liner SS United States, dubbed “the greyhound of the seas” for its speed in crossing the Atlantic. Bob also worked on the design and construction of destroyers, escorts and shipping vessels during World War II. He then worked at Combustion Engineering, designers of large steam generators. Later, he worked for Voorhees, Walker, Foley and Smith Engineers and Architects, designers of telephone exchanges for AT&T. Syska and Hennessy was next, to assist in completion of plans and specifications for the United Nations headquarters in New York. When engineering jobs were scarce, Bob went to work for the Department of Hospitals and the Board of Education, doing general drafting. In 1956, Bob got a job with the Construction Department of the Veterans Administration in Washington, D.C. designing, building and renovating veteran’s hospitals for 28 years, until his retirement. Bob was active in the IOOF (Odd Fellows) for many years, in New York, the Washington, DC area, and Sonoma County. He was also a Mason. He spent many years in community service, volunteering time for organizations that include the American Red Cross, Washington Ear, Jewish community foundations and synagogues. He also was a dedicated blood donor, with a lifetime total of 30 gallons. A lifelong swimmer, Bob enjoyed being on, in and near the water until nearly the end of his long life. An inveterate crossword puzzler, he also enjoyed the challenge of word crafting and brainteasers. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Harriette, and two daughters, Laura (John) of Occidental, and Karen (Paul) of Annapolis, MD, and two grandsons, Alex and Corey Lyon. He was extremely proud of his family. Memorial donations in Bob’s name may be made to Memorial Hospice or Congregation Shomrei Torah, Elisha’s Pantry. [N.B.: In accordance with my liberal definition of what is a Jasper, I think if some one saw fit to mention his time at Manhattan College, then it must have been important to him. That makes him a Jasper to me. Besides isn’t once of the corporal works of mercy to bury the dead? I’ll commend him to our fellow alums for their prayers.]

I posted the following for us:

The Manhattan College alumni community shares your grief, and is now praying for our fellow student and the family at this time. We have a liberal understanding of what makes someone a “Jasper”. It’s not a piece of paper, but that you’ve taken the lessons into your heart. He certainly seems to have lived like one of us. Since someone thought it was important to mention his time at the College, then we think it’s important too. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. “No man is an island, entire of itself … any man’s death diminishes me”. We are sorry for your loss.

Westport Republicans Nominate Candidates

***Begin Quote***

The Westport Republican Town Committee (RTC) Tuesday night endorsed its candidates for the various Westport town boards and commissions in the November election.

The candidates were recommended by the RTC’s Nominating Committee, chaired by Steven Violette, and their endorsements were unanimously approved by the full committee, the RTC said in a press release.

“We are very encouraged and proud of the experience, qualifications and leadership potential represented in our slate of candidates for November’s election,” Bob Zappi, chairman of the Westport RTC, said in a statement.

“Our candidates embody the RTC’s most valued principles: commitment to working in a fair and bi-partisan manner; dedication to the welfare of Westport; and support for the free exchange of ideas, spirited debate, and respect that are crucial parts of the democratic process.”

Zappi said the candidates are leaders in their chosen fields, active and established residents of Westport, and individuals with strong integrity and commitment.

“I firmly believe that Westporters will agree that these candidates can bring tremendous value to our town’s government,” he said.

Letter to the editor: Giuliani’s support of abortion wrong
SECTION: OPINION; Pg. 6A

***Begin Quote***

Rudolph Giuliani, former mayor of New York City, is a Republican contender for his party’s nomination as candidate for president of the United States. Giuliani is a Roman Catholic who graduated from Bishop Loughlin High School in Brooklyn, N.Y., a Catholic academic institution. Giuliani is also a graduate of Manhattan College, a Catholic college.

Giuliani wants to lead this nation as president. Giuliani will tell voters his father spent time in a New York prison called Sing Sing. His father, perhaps, was determined to make sure his son did not make the same moral errors he did, so the young lad was sent to a “good Catholic school.”

While Giuliani has a “good Catholic education,” the sins of his father still contaminate his immoral soul and intellect. Giuliani morally and legislatively condones abortion rights. The New York Catholic bishops, including Cardinal Edward Eagan, have not challenged Mr. Giuliani’s pro-choice position because they remember always their economic benefactors at the Mass and at the bank.

Giuliani should be declared toleratus excommunicated by the Catholic bishops, as he is an apostate heretic who scorns the infallible moral truth of the most holy Fifth Commandment: “You shall not kill.”

Ahh, enjoying summer is best left to young folk. Us old ... jaspers ... are just content with arising each day.

Sigh, I've ranted about having your own email address in your own domain.

http://reinkefaceslife.com/2006/10/31/
technology-never-ever-let-an-isp-control-your-email-address/

http://tinyurl.com/2huxna

What happens if people don't get the message of the shift.

I've even suggested for those, who want their email at their isp account, that they should still use their own domain and just forward the email where ever they want it.

For one particularly clueless soul, I set up his domain (and this is all sanitized so as not to embarrass anyone) as "clueless.com" with an email address of "soul @ clueless.com". That was forwarded to "clueless soul @ gmail.com" for backup 'n' recovery purposes as well as their excellent spam filters. The gmail account was forwarded to the ISP where he wanted it. The return address on the gmail and the isp account were set to his domain. So his "email address" never changes no matter how many times he changes ISPs. If he accidentally deletes a message he has the gmail account to recover it from. If his ISP goes off line or their email stops working, he can fall back to gmail. And, if his ISP is bought by someone else and he is forced to change his isp email address, it's no big deal.  Another benefit I just thought of his that he can use gmail's filters to squelch someone. And, he never has to worry about someone having an old email address.

>can you please update your address book and include me in the jottings mailings?

Done, but you can do this yourself by just sending a message to the subscribe and unsubscribe addresses.
