Chief Israeli rabbi denounces career women
Jul 12 05:46 AM US/Eastern

*** begin quote ***

Israel's chief Ashkenazi rabbi has denounced the "phenomenon of women who make their careers on the backs on their children," the tabloid Maariv reported on Thursday.

*** end quote ***

Now when any religious leader talks, I listen. The fact that it’s the “wrong” religion really doesn’t bother me much. I’ll take someone else’s insights. The fact that make them public, (i.e., publishes them), means they think it’s important. While one has to bear in mind that all the qualifiers and silent assumptions may be different, one can still listen respectfully, learn something, and benefit from the experiences.

When I read this, my first thought was the rabbi has really stepped into a mess. Look at all the sacred cows that he is taking on. Feminism, family values, sexual equality, ceilings, and bunch of others. I think I can distill his statement into a single question.

What is the proper role of women?

My short answer is whatever they want it to be.

As a consultant and an IT architect, my first thought is for what are the assumptions, paradigms, and memes involved. In this case, there are three hidden lessons in the statement.

The rabbi has a certain paradigm of what women should do. I’m not sure how he plans to force them to operate in accordance with his paradigm. But, I’m opposed to that force.

Women often are forced financially to work outside the home because of high taxes caused by Socialist big governments. I’m vigorously opposed to that.

One has to admire the rabbi’s ideal of the family as the building block of society. Every child safe and secure, nurtured by a loving Mom, protected and provided for by Father. Quite different from what we have today. I wish we had more ideal families. I’m sure that Popes would agree with that.

So, I’m sure my fellow alums don’t need this cheerleading to do their duty to Family. (If they do, they must have attended a different school?) It’s just a shame that everyone doesn’t see it similarly.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

COL. KENNETH FOLEY, 83
SECTION: OBITS; Pg. A10

Kenneth Foley, 83, of Honolulu, Hawaii, a native Staten Islander and retired Marine colonel, died Wednesday at home.

Born in Richmond, he moved to Honolulu in 1972.

Mr. Foley entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942, during World War II. He served two tours in the Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged in 1945.

After the war, he graduated from Manhattan College with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.

Mr. Foley worked for two years as an insurance claims adjuster with a local company before re-enlisting in the USMC. During his time with the Marines, he worked in military intelligence. In the 1970s, he was assigned to the U.S embassy in Paris, briefing the ambassador for the Paris peace talks during the Vietnam War, his family said. During that time, he attained the rank of colonel.

According to family, during the Korean War, Mr. Foley developed a system for detecting and defeating anti-aircraft fire, which proved to be highly effective. Today, the technology he developed for the system is in the Smithsonian Institution.

“He was a very simple, proud man who was dedicated to his country. He gave his loyalty to the Marine Corps, he gave his love to his family and he gave his soul to God,” said his daughter, Linda Robb.

Mr. Foley enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

His wife of 57 years, the former Bertha Randolph, died in 2005.

In addition to his daughter, Linda, surviving are two sons, Kenneth Jr. and Robert; two daughters, Diane Medeiros and Nancy Ishimoto; eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

New principal brings ideas, energy to Harrington Park
The Record
Wednesday, July 11, 2007
By WALTER DAWKINS STAFF WRITER

***Begin Quote***

HARRINGTON PARK — When Brian Gatens heard there was an opening for a principal at a K-8 school here, he knew it was the perfect job for him.

“Harrington Park has all the elements that administrators are looking for: strong principal support, fantastic kids, solid faculty and a great facility,” said Gatens, 36, who will start the $109,500-a-year position in August, replacing Scott Davies, who will be the new principal at Gibbs Elementary School in New Milford.

Gatens was principal of Roosevelt Elementary in Hawthorne, where he worked with Harrington Park Superintendent Adam Fried – formerly Hawthorne’s director of education.

“Adam and I have a really good relationship, and we work really well together,” said Gatens, who has two master’s degrees in education, one as a reading specialist from Fordham University and the other in school administration from Manhattan College. “So I applied for one job, and it was Harrington Park.”

At Hawthorne, Gatens and Fried started unique, 90-minute-long evening tutoring sessions for struggling students to improve their grades and test scores.

“I kind of dreamed it up, and Adam helped me bring it to fruition,” Gatens said. “And that kind of showed me that he was the kind of person that I wanted to keep working with.”

For Fried, the feeling is mutual.

“We believe his energy, compassion for kids and knowledge of education will be a wonderful addition to an already strong administrative team,” Fried said.

Gatens, who lives in Ridgewood, said his first goal will be to introduce himself to the school community. In early August, he plans to have a movie day at the school for kindergarteners, first-graders and their parents.

“We’re going to call it a beach party,” Gatens said. “The kids will watch the movie, and at the other end of the room we’ll have a reception for the parents where they get to meet me.”

For the older kids, he’s going to reach out to members of the district’s student council.

“These kids are the leaders of the building,” Gatens said. “I want to bring those kids in and have them show me the building, walk me around and get to know me.”

Gatens plans to be a very active presence in the school.

“Another goal that I have here is that every child sees me everyday,” Gatens said. “When children feel that the adults who are around them are genuinely interested in them, then they respond well academically and socially.

He said his goal is also to develop well-rounded students.

“Academics are huge but we also want to help foster children who are compassionate and caring. It’s more than about how well you can do on a test. It’s about creating good people,” he said.

Asbury Park Press (New Jersey)
July 6, 2007 Friday
LIFESTYLE: Feathered friends are out there, if you know where to look
BYLINE: CHELSEA MICHELS
SECTION: REPORTER

The birds of Jackson don’t always flock together but there is a wide range of birds in the area that change with the seasons, according to Mike Mandracchia.

Mandracchia, 51, of Jackson has been teaching a birding course called The Birds of Jackson through the Jackson School District for 14 years, and also held an exhibit on June 5 called the Birds of New Jersey at the Jackson branch of the Ocean County Library.

His birding courses, which run through the spring, consist of five field trips starting at Jackson Memorial High School that continue at several prime bird spotting locations in Jackson.

“I love the variety,” he said. “You can go out there and never know what to expect on any given day.”

Mandracchia works for the state Department of Environmental. His interest in birds, he said, stems from growing up around them, as well as his educational training. He received a bachelor of science in biology from Manhattan College and a master of ecology from Northeastern University in Boston.

“We try to offer a variety of events for all ages,” said Virginia Morningstern, the principal library assistant who also is a member of the program planning team. “We’ve had Mr. Mandracchia here several times for different topics.”

Jackson is a unique area with the Pine Barrens and being close to the Shore,” she added. “There is a wide variety of birds. Most people in Jackson have bird feeders in their backyards, so it’ll be nice to know what kind of birds they’re seeing.”

Mandracchia explained how there are about 30 types of birds in Jackson that anyone can expect to see, but sometime more rare birds will pop up. In recent years, the common loon has become more frequent in sightings, and he also has spotted some king eider a duck normally found only on the coast in a flock on a lake. He also has seen pileated and red-headed woodpeckers, which are usually very rare in Jackson, he said.

“Some birds have increased in numbers, but others have just about disappeared,” said Mandracchia, describing how blue grosbeaks have become more populated, while bobwhite quails are hard to find now.

In his exhibits, he usually shows photographs of birds that he has taken around town, and a typical presentation will last about 90 minutes, he said, depending on questions from the audience. He sometimes provides a checklist of birds in Jackson, so viewers can keep an eye out for birds around town and know what they are seeing.

“It’s one of those fun hobbies,” Mandracchia said. “With a digital camera, you can take some nice digital pictures of the birds.

“It isn’t that expensive of a hobby anymore.”

Mandracchia also will be conducting an additional bird talk at Ocean County Library’s Upper Shores Branch in Lavallette at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.

COLUMBUS, OhioOhio State’s acting president said the temporary nature of his job hasn’t stopped well-meaning alumni from offering suggestions.

One of the first e-mails Joseph Alutto received after being appointed interim president last month was from an alumnus suggesting he open up campus parking to all comers.

“All I could think about was, ‘Boy, that would be one mark that I could make on this place,’” Alutto said Tuesday with a laugh, envisioning the controversy on the crowded campus, the nation’s largest.

{Extraneous Deleted}

So far, Alutto has used the interim job as a soapbox for keeping Ohio State affordable and making sure it’s a university that delivers once students get here.

“It’s access to excellence. It’s not access to mediocrity,” Alutto told The Associated Press in an interview. “If we’re reaching out to bright students and saying, ‘Come to Ohio State,’ we then have an obligation to create an absolutely world-class environment.”

Alutto, 66, has published more than 65 academic articles on managerial behavior. A New York City native, he earned his bachelor’s at Manhattan College, the first in his family to go to college.

Sansone will tell you that when the shows conclude at 8 p.m., there’s still plenty of nightlife left in the district, and he names both new and renovated restaurants that compete for hungry and thirsty patrons.

Hello Mr. Reinke,

I enjoyed reading your paper on the weekend, as usual a lot is always occurring in the Manhattan community which is a good thing.  I wanted to congratulate all of the people that have obtained promotions and new positions at work, for example Collen Arnold (manager at Aqua), Lt. Gen. Arthur J. Licht (Boss of Air Mobility Command), William A. Houlihan (UBS Managing Director in the financial Institutions Banking Group).

I look forward to next week’s paper. Enjoy the rest of the weekend and I hope that your 4th of July was a good one despite the rainy weather that we had.

Bye,
Sheryl Chung (Class of 1996)

{JR: So how do I convert you from a reader to say a ambassadress (is that a word?) to the Class of 1996 and have you turn all the 96-ers into Jasper Jottings addicts? Sooner or later, I’ll have to stop doing Jottings, if for no other reason than mental frailty. So would assert that I’ve passed that long ago. While no one will probably ever dedicate the time, effort, and attention to it that I have, perhaps with the blog it might be possible to have a community of reader / writers active enough that it continues on. I haven’t seen this happen on the net anywhere yet. But it seems the logical outgrowth. Instead of one person putting in 20 hours a week, it should be possible to motivate 1200 people to put in one minute a week. Or is this trying to get nine women organized to produce a baby in one month? Everyone knows you can’t get nine men to cooperate for a month unless there’s a baseball involved.}

Dear John:

Don Pace was a classmate of mine (Class of 1952). He lived in Syosset, NY for many years but I've lost track of him for the past ten or so. I could find no obit in Newsday to help track him down when Mike McEneney gave me the news of his (presumed) death. But he was definitely Class of '52.

Hi JohnN52, (and Mike53), I redid some mechanized searches and couldn't find anything closer than Tennessee. Can you give me some "texture" around Jasper Pace? Like what he did for a living. Strange hobbies. Passions. Friends. Unfortunately, the inet, while an amazing tool, as superhighway for data, it has some enormous potholes. I'll keep poking around. Fjohn68

Dear John(s),

From what I have found out, it may not be Don Pace that went to his eternal reward. Grace is sending me a letter that the office received from a member of theClass of 1942. When i get that we might know more.

                      Best,

Hi John,

It's Stefanie Gutierrez here, how are you? I found your website on the web... I think it might be a sign that I need to get back out there sidewalk counseling.... We had some personal setbacks that made it difficult for me and for Gabe to come out on Saturday mornings, but things have gotten much better now and I miss you all.

How are you?

Stef

Dear Ms. Stef,

I am glad you found that you're "famous" as defined by my web site. That in turn led you to me. "Personal Setbacks" are the just the Universe pointing where the opportunities are. I've take the liberty of copying my fellow Jasper Kevin since you might see him on a Saturday morning. My Saturday mornings are usually spent causing trouble by pushing out Jasper Jottings, in which you've seen yourself reflected in Kevin's email. And, by which, I hope to create a virtual, and virtuous, community.

Best wishes,
fjohn

Dear John,

Thank you so much for forwarding this e-mail.  I have indeed met Ms.Gutierrez on many occasions as she served as a sidewalk counselor at Choices abortion mill in Long Island City, Queens.  She often brought her young child with her, which I thought was a powerful witness for life in the midst of what goes on at Choices.  I have also met Stefanie in her capacity as a reporter for The Tablet, the Diocese of Brooklyn's newspaper when my parish, St. Mary's Winfield, held a procession on the feast of Corpus Christi.  I would like to invite Stefanie back to Choices any time she can be there, but Saturday's especially, as we have had trouble getting people to be counselors there lately.  I would also like to let Stefanie know that Msgr. Phillip Reilly, the executive director of the Helpers of God's Precious Infants, is holding a mini-retreat on July 22, 2007 at the Monastery of the Most Precious Blood in Brooklyn from 4 to 8pm.  Thanks again.

Benedict XVI on worshipping the state
Posted by Ryan W. McMaken at June 30, 2007 11:12 PM

*** begin quote ***

Like John Paul II before him, Benedict XVI sees the state, and especially the modern one, as perhaps the greatest threat to the Faith and its members. The 20th century is perhaps the greatest single illustration of this. The threat is not new. The state has an excellent penchant for setting itself up as a sort of savior of mankind on earth.

*** end quote ***

Don’t give me any “render unto Caesar” stuff. The State has absolutely taken over God’s role. And, it wants to be adored. Some people are so stupid as to do it. The Tower of Babel had to be a government project. Like the Leaning Tower of Pisa, which I understand they’ve “straightened” to is proper tilt. Can’t have tourist attractions falling over. Argh!

And that’s the last word.

Curmudgeon
