Stolen Wallet Found After 56 Years

(AP Photo/Sun Journal, Amber Waterman) :: JeannetteGregoire, 75, displays on Monday, April 30, 2007, in Lewiston, Maine, photos from her late husband, Val'swallet that was stolen April 11, 1951, and then found April 11, 2007, during renovation of the Paramount Theater in Boston. Included with the photos was Val's military ID, his liberty pass and several photos.

By Associated Press Updated: 5/2/2007
LEWISTON, Maine

*** begin quote ***

On April 11, 1951, sailor Val Gregoire, 18, was hit over the head while on shore leave in Boston. When he came to, his wallet — and his pants — were gone.

Gregoire's widow and five children were familiar with the story, which became part of family legend. But now they have proof. The wallet was discovered by a demolition worker at Boston's Paramount Theatre — 56 years to the day Gregoire lost it.

''I was stunned,'' said Jeannette Gregoire, 75, of Lewiston, who got a call from Kathy Bagen, the worker's wife. ''How could this have survived?''

*** end quote ***

Well, if I can NOT have heroic tales, I’ll take fortunate happenstance.

The story tells a legend. True or not. (After all what mugger steals pants? A lady of the evening perhaps? But we don’t know.) One has to marvel when lost things are returned. Makes me think of the “prodigal son”, the “birds of the field”, and all the Jaspers who we’ll meet again on a special Quad.

Now the only question is will that be on “high”, down “low”, or a split campus like the injineers trudging up the hill for a D in Theology? My worst nightmare is that Hell is that trek in the cold and snow on an unending loop. It’s enough to scare me to goodness.

I’m sure my fellow alums need no such motivation.

cic

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

HEADQUARTER'S MESSAGES

JASPER HEADQUARTERS: Manhattan College Professor, Dr. George B. Kirsch

http://www.manhattan.edu/news/news_releases/062207_1.shtml

June 22, 2007

Manhattan College Professor, Dr. George B. Kirsch, Authors Two Newly-Released Paperbacks On The Early History Of Baseball

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Dr. George B. Kirsch, professor of history at Manhattan College, is the author of Baseball in Blue and Gray: The National Pastime During the Civil War, and Baseball and Cricket: The Creation of American Team Sports, 1838-72, which were both recently released in paperback.

In Baseball in Blue and Gray (2003), published by Princeton University Press, Kirsch examines the growth of baseball during the Civil War (1861-1865) and how the sport’s popularity had everything to do with the surging American nationalism of the period. He recounts stories of great players and introduces entrepreneurs who found new ways to invest in the sport. Kirsch also touches on the exclusion of blacks and shares stories of the rise of sports journalism.

Baseball and Cricket (1989), published by University of Illinois press, attempts to answer the question of why Americans chose baseball over its early rival, cricket, as their national pastime. The book tracks baseball’s transition from a leisure sport to a professional entity within the social context of the mid-19th century.

“Baseball in Blue and Gray has been a big hit with Civil War buffs and fans of old-fashioned baseball, and I am very pleased to see Baseball and Cricket back in print, since it has been recognized as a classic study of the origins of team sports in the United States,” Kirsch says.

Kirsch, who has taught history at Manhattan College for more than 30 years, is the author of several books and the editor of two volumes of Sports in North America: A Documentary History, and co-editor of the Encyclopedia of Ethnicity and Sports in the United States. He has served as a historical consultant for Major League Baseball and Macmillan’s Baseball Encyclopedia, and currently is completing a social history of golf in the United States to be published by University of Illinois Press in 2008.

JASPER HEADQUARTERS: Improving New York And Connecticut Water Quality And Coasts

June 22, 2007

Manhattan College Among Organizations To Receive Grant For Projects Aimed At Improving New York And Connecticut Water Quality And Coasts

RIVERDALE, N.Y.Manhattan College is among several organizations that received grant money that will fund 12 water quality and restoration projects in Long Island Sound and Jamaica Bay. The grants, which amount to nearly $1.6 million for projects and studies in the region over the next four years, were announced on Tuesday, June 5 at the Bronx Zoo.

The $1.6 million will be leveraged by $2.1 million raised by the grant recipients themselves towards the projects, providing a total of $3.6 million towards innovative conservation.

Dr. Michael Judge, associate professor of biology at Manhattan College, will lead the project entitled “Numerical Evaluation of Larval Survival in Long Island Sound as Influenced by Exposure to Varying Levels of Dissolved Oxygen.” Dr. Judge will be working in conjunction with HydroQual, Inc., which provides water resource consulting and pollution assessment

The College will receive more than $181,000, including $106,599 from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, to conduct a study to develop a tool that will improve the long-term survival of fish, shellfish and crabs by allowing resource managers to better determine and manage the amount of nutrients allowed in the open waters of Long Island Sound. The research will look at the different amounts of dissolved oxygen required to sustain juvenile and adult fish and shellfish.

The project will draw upon the College’s expertise in biological sciences and environmental engineering to address the lingering problem of stressed oxygen levels in Long Island Sound attributable to excess nitrogen primarily from sewage treatment plants in New York City, Westchester and Connecticut. An engineering graduate student will work directly with Judge to determine how best to upgrade computer models of water quality in the Sound by adding information about how larval species move around areas of low dissolved oxygen.

“The dynamic nature of the tidal flows in Long Island Sound when coupled with the variations in dissolved oxygen levels call for added complexity of fishery models,” says Judge. “We expect to produce biologically realistic water quality criteria by including explicit larval behaviors into our simulations,” Judge says.

Among other benefits, the project will improve on the ability to pinpoint and protect important spawning habitat and to tailor nutrient reduction goals to improve propagation of fish and shellfish.

The source of the funds is the Dissolved Oxygen Environmental Benefit Fund for the Western Long Island Sound and Jamaica Bay, which is designed to support restoration and water quality projects that reduce pollution, particularly nitrogen, threatening the health and living resources of these estuaries.

“Long Island Sound and Jamaica Bay are two priority areas for ecosystem restoration and enhancement in New York State,” says Pete Grannis, commissioner of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. “While we have made great strides with our partners to improve these areas, there is still much more to accomplish. The 12 projects announced will incrementally improve the habitats and our knowledge base for these areas and for the future of these resources.”

In addition to Manhattan College, other organizations that received grants toward habitat restoration projects include the Westchester County Department of Planning, New York City Parks & Recreation, the Connecticut Fund for the Environment, and Columbia University.

Contributing to the funds for all 12 projects are the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, Long Island Soundkeeper, New York City Department of Environmental Protection, New York/New Jersey Baykeeper, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Business college dean to be interim OSU chief
ASSOCIATED PRESS

***Begin Quote***

COLUMBUS - The dean of Ohio State University's business college will serve as the university's interim presiden, beginning July 1, while its board of trustees continues its search to replace Karen Holbrook, whose retirement begins at the end of the month.

University trustees yesterday appointed Joseph Alutto, dean of the university's Fisher college of business since 1991, to serve during the search, the university said.

"As we continue our presidential search, we are fortunate to have someone of Joe's caliber and experience at the helm of the university," trustees' Chairman Gil Cloyd said. "He is the ideal person to serve as the university's chief executive officer on an interim basis."

{Extraneous Deleted}

Mr. Alutto, 65, said he had not applied for the position of president and his only interest was moving the university forward academically. He said he did not know how long he would serve as interim president.

"That's really up to the search committee and they hope to have that person on board in the fall," Mr. Alutto said.

Mr. Alutto also holds the John Berry Sr. Chair in Business and is a professor of management and human resources. He is the executive dean for the professional colleges, coordinating the activities of the Colleges of Education, Human Ecology, Engineering, Law, Social Work, and Food, Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, and represents them in decision-making bodies universitywide.

Mr. Alutto specializes in managerial behavior. He has published a book and more than 65 articles in academic journals, the university said.

Before joining Ohio State, Mr. Alutto was a professor of management at the State University of New York at Buffalo. His research focused on joint ventures between China and the United States. He was dean of the SUNY-Buffalo School of Management from 1976 to 1990. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Manhattan College, a master's in industrial relations from the University of Illinois, and a doctorate in organizational behavior from Cornell University.

Island justice to head city-wide group

***Begin Quote***

Staten Island Supreme Court Justice Philip G. Minardo became the first Island justice in nearly 20 years to be named president of the city’s Association of Supreme Court Justices.

Minardo, administrative judge at state Supreme Court, St. George, was elected to the post during the organization’s annual meeting last night at the Appellate Division, Second Department Courthouse in Brooklyn.

He becomes the first Island Supreme Court justice to hold the position since retired Justice Thomas Sullivan served in 1988.

Minardo will oversee an organization that represents 187 Supreme Court justices who serve in the city’s five boroughs. The purpose of the association is to recommend legislative changes and address other issues in an attempt to improve judicial service to lawyers and litigants.

A graduate of Manhattan College and St. John’s University School of Law, Minardo began his career as an Island assistant district attorney in 1969 before moving into private practice in 1976.

After serving as special counsel to Sen. John Marchi from 1988 to 1995, Minardo was elected Supreme Court justice in 1995.

In 2005, Chief Administrative Judge Jonathan Lippman appointed Minardo to a four-year term as administrative judge at state Supreme Court, St. George.

ISO New England Elects Roberta S. Brown and Richard E. Kessel to Board of Directors

***Begin Quote***

HOLYOKE, Mass.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–ISO New England Inc., the operator of the region’s bulk power system and wholesale electricity markets, today announced the election of two new board members.

Roberta S. Brown, President of Sassafras River Associates, LLC, and Richard E. Kessel, President and Chief Executive Officer of Environmental Power Corporation, were officially named to the ISO New England Board of Directors, effective June 22. They replace board members Mary Sharpe Hayes and Richard A. Abdoo.

“The leadership and expertise Roberta and Richard have demonstrated throughout their careers make them a welcome addition to the ISO New England Board of Directors,” said Vincent M. O’Reilly, ISO New England’s Chairman of the Board. “I am confident their collective experience will benefit ISO New England, the states, and stakeholders as we endeavor on future initiatives.”

{Extraneous Deleted}

Mr. Kessel, a veteran of the energy industry, currently serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer for Environmental Power Corporation (AMEX:EPG), an organization dedicated to the development and ownership of renewable energy facilities. Prior to this, Mr. Kessel has served as President and CEO for a number of companies including Bedford Partners, Suez Environment North America, and Trigen Energy Corporation. In addition, Mr. Kessel was Chief Operating Officer of Sithe Energies and held various managerial and operational positions at Ebasco Services, Inc. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from Manhattan College, attended New York University’s Stern School of Business, and received an Executive Management degree from Wharton.

Upon the election of the new board members, Mary Sharpe Hayes will retire from ISO New England’s Board. Richard “Dick” A. Abdoo resigned from the ISO New England Board of Directors in March 2007.

“Mary and Dick represent the finest of professionals. I speak on behalf of myself and the entire Board in thanking them for their service,” said O’Reilly. “Mary’s insights over the last ten years have helped to guide the ISO through a decade of change and advancement. She has left her mark on each of the organization’s successes, and we are indebted to her for her contributions.”

As a Regional Transmission Organization, ISO New England elects its board members through a nominating process that involves representatives from the ISO New England Board, the New England Power Pool (NEPOOL), and the New England Conference of Public Utilities Commissioners. The nominating process took place earlier this year and recently included an endorsement vote by the NEPOOL Participants Committee.

THIS IS THE GHOST OF ALUMNI’S PAST

As the proud owner of a new laptop, may I suggest that you just think for a moment of what it will mean if one morning you opening it up and it DOESN’T awake. Or, it gets lost or stolen. Or, you allow some bad software in.

Yup, I’m talking about the dreaded word … backup.

Fortunately, it easier now than it was when all of those things happened to me at various times.

You can use Mozy to create a secure online backup every time you’re connected to the inet. Sort of set it and forget it.

If you haven’t learned about Murphy’s Law, you will. Figure 3AM the night before something is due, you just type the last period on your opus, the lights blink, and your notebook is doing an imitation of a brick. If you have AT LEAST your data safely offsite and backed up, I won’t have to read and report about “student jumps out window following laptop. Both failed”.

Seriously. Yell if you have questions.

Go on Ebineezer. (Oh wrong movie!)

Dear Jasper Joseph:

I found you in the Transmission & Distribution World from 2006, which for some reason, (usually an advertising update), popped as "new". I'll be "featuring" it in Jasper Jottings this week. I'm also updating my address book using Plaxo. Please take a moment to share with me with your latest contact info. I won't annoy you again with this tool for awhile.  As a fellow Jasper, you might know me from publishing http://www.jasperjottings.com, but if not, I found you as a fellow alum. Actually, The Baltimore Reporter is a small website that really isn't making much money, and I'm doing the cartoons for free at this point just to get the exposure. I'm hoping the exposure will lead to a syndication offer.

At that point, if I had a syndication deal, you would have to pay to republish it. But for the time being, just reprint whatever you want.

{JR: Now that’s hard! If you become successful, hmmm. Yup, I’ll hope for success. After all we have to make room for the aspiring cartoonists to showcase their wares here. After all we can’t afford to have TWO cartoonists. That would just make us look “silly”. J  Any outer cartoonists out there? If I can’t get editors and reporters, maybe I can draw cartoonists. (pun unintended!)  }

Dear John,

I heard that Donald J Pace, '52 died within the last 2 weeks in Wisconsin but I have been unable to find an obituary. Can you take a look?

I appreciate your observations.  Gave me some things to revisit in my own mind.  And the points of difference we both have are not likely ones either of us will ever be able to sway the other from.

I will challenge one assertion you make and one alternative, and offer, not as a point of debate, but so you can consider my own thoughts.

I believe, purely from a historical perspective (I couldn’t handle Calculus with Br Andrew Codyre in freshman engineering, hence my history poli sci degree and my masters in history) that from the War of 1812 was a change from the founding fathers vision.  IMHO the founding fathers always had a vision of Empire on the North American continent, although I would agree that in their vision, the continental dominance would have been more than adequate.  From the Northwest territories and Federal legislation that encouraged and incentivized the expansion west (funny to think of Ohio as the Western frontier), the founding fathers really did believe that a New Empire would emerge.  Jefferson was clearly one of those founders.  I suppose a strict constructionist should argue the Louisiana Purchase was illegal.

The Civil War was, I agree, clearly a watershed in the American political experience, and established the dominance of the central Federal government over the individual states.  I recall (although I would be hard pressed to find the research citation today) one of my professors in my Masters program asserting that prior to the Civil War, the correct grammatical statement was “… the United States are… but that after the Civil War, the acknowledgement of the primacy of the Federal Government and the unity of the nation as a single entity led to the phrasing used to this day “.. The United States is…

On principle, I agree that the balance of central government with the role of the states is offset far beyond where it was envisioned.  But I also look at the stumblings of the European Union that seems to be trying to follow that role model that leaves the individual units with dominance, and the whole EU experiment to me is amusing.  Living in Alabama where there are still honest people who assert, for example “only the Confederate Army surrendered, not the Confederate government, so the South is still legally under military occupation…” there are diehards who assert that secession, albeit by a nonviolent means, is still an objective to be achieved.  Perhaps they can succeed and align with the Ben and Jerry Republic OF Vermont? And we can a split nation like East and West Pakistan of the 60s or the United Arab republics of Syria and Egypt?  (weak attempt at humor, not slighting your perspective or view… but the thought of some stereotypical Alabama secessionists with some of the stereotypes from Vermont on the same side of an issue is funny, you have to grant that!)

The larger dilemma is what to do now and how to get there.  Switzerland survives because it has become a certified neutral that caters to legal and illegal financial interests with equality.  Almost like the official Witnesses of Heinlein’s Stranger in a Strange Land (I know we are 6 years apart, but I think that cult classic of the 60s may have been on your reading list as well as mine).  But now that they have “broken” the trust, and opened their accounts on a limited basis in trying to afford restitution form the Nazi era, they have also exposed themselves.  I believe it will be a matter of time, either because the Swiss serve the interests of all sides, that one side will either attack the Swiss because they serve an opponent, or the opponent will be struck on Swiss soil.  It really won’t matter who does what first… al- Qaeda, SAS, MI6, CIA, Iranian Special Services… it will happen.

Spiking the guns and pretending it will all go away?  Nice thought, but I doubt seriously that will preserve anything for anyone. We are now up to our 3rd vertebrae in gators, and the late analysis that we should have thought through whether we really even needed to drain the swamp has no bearing on what to do now
