QUOTE OF THE WEEK:

JQuote: We’re at our best

I think I’d take the Martians to see us taking care of one another. I might show them parents walking with a new born baby on their shoulder late at night, trying to get the baby back to sleep. Or volunteers hammering together a house for someone whose life will be changed by it. Or the way we automatically stop for someone who has tripped and ask if they’re ok. Or perhaps how an entire nation gives food and medicine to a country across the ocean. It’s when we’re caring for one another that we’re at our best.

Sea Lion Joins Walk-A-Thon in Calif.
May 13 11:48 AM US/Eastern

*** begin quote ***

CORTE MADERA, Calif. (AP) - He has flippers instead of feet—and certainly no sneakers or hiking boots. But that didn't stop a sea lion from joining schoolchildren on a walk-a-thon.

The marine mammal apparently noticed children doing laps Friday morning around a course they had set up at the Marin Country Day School next to the shores of the San Francisco Bay. The 185-pound Steller sea lion waddled ashore, shocking students and teachers.

"He did a whole lap," said Kelly Watson, director of constituent relations and web communications at the private school.

Well if I can’t have the weak acting heroic or the poor acting honestly, then I’ll take animals.

And, yeah, I know, this is not good, when a wild animal becomes “patterened” to trust humans. Heck, humans should be wary of trust humans. It’s a tough world out there.

I can’t imagine the joy of the children and the consternation of the adults. But, perhaps it was the Intelligent Designer’s way of reward the children for their good work with a little entertainment.

That’s my belief and I’m sticking to it.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Subject: FW: MG Scales Gettysburg Address, Memorial Day, 2007

If you don't read anything else today, read this...and share it with all your friends and acquaintances.  .This is the same  MGen Scales that is one of the analysts on Fox News..And tell the next media person you see what a disservice they are doing to this great Country of ours, and the brave men and women who are defending it.

*** begin quote ***

MG Scales Gettysburg Address, Memorial Day, 2007

Yesterday the citizens of Gettysburg asked me to give their annual Memorial Address in the battlefield cemetery, the same place where Lincoln spoke 140 years ago.  Soldiers from Walter Reed and their families were honored in the front row and veterans from WWII to the present were there as well. It was a moment I will never forget.

My speech is below.

Happy Memorial Day.
Bob Scales

Mr. Kuhn, friends of Gettysburg and most importantly fellow veterans. What a great thrill it is to return to Gettysburg. I've come to this place hundreds of times. I've walked this ground when it was covered with snow, in the heat of summer, in a pouring rain storm while leading a staff ride with the leadership of the Chinese Army a few years ago.

Coming here never gets old. It never becomes tiresome. It never fails to excite a passion or raise my spirit. To those who have never seen war surely emotions like these seem strange indeed. Some of our citizens who hear old soldiers like me talk about a love for a battlefield conclude that we love war. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

Part of my love for this place is personal. A distant relative, Colonel Alfred M. Scales, was seriously wounded leading Scales North Carolina Brigade up Seminary Ridge on the first day of the battle.

Another reason I venerate this place is because it is a soldier's laboratory and a place to learn the art of war. We soldiers practice our profession only infrequently so we rely on past battles to teach us about the future. Even though Gettysburg was fought using weapons that seem primitive to young soldiers the lessons it teaches about leadership and courage and intellect are immutable. We are learning again in Iraq and Afghanistan that war is not a test of technology it is a test of the collective will and talents of soldiers and the nature and character of that test will never change.

Another reason why this place attracts me is because all of what you see around you is so close to home. This was America's war from both sides, fought on ground that is so familiar and recognizable. It was the first war fought in which most soldiers were literate and, thanks to the recent invention of photography, so recognizable. When you go to the visitors center look into the eyes of the young soldiers staring at you from across the century and you'll see a reflection of yourselves.

But I'm drawn here mainly to relive and revive in my own soul the unique influences that brought young soldiers here to fight and die a century and a half ago. Again and again, it's the same old question from politicians and media who have the rare privilege of watching soldiers in action in Iraq and Afghanistan: why is their morale so high? Don't they know the American people are fed up with this war? Don't they know it's going badly? Often they come to me incredulous about what they perceive as a misspent sense of patriotism and loyalty.

I tell them time and again what every one of you sitting here today, those of you who have seen the face of death in war, understand: it's not really about loyalty. It's not about a belief in some abstract notion concerning war aims or national strategy. It's not even about winning or losing. On that fateful evening on the last day of June 1863 soldiers weren't sitting around campfires in Cashtown or Emmittsburg roasting coffee and frying bacon to discuss the latest pronouncements from Lincoln or Jefferson Davis. They might have trusted their leaders or maybe they didn't. They might have been well informed and passionate about their cause or maybe not. They might have joined the colors to end slavery or restore the Union or maybe they just were shanghaied on the docks in Brooklyn or Manhattan.

Before battle young soldiers then and now think about their buddies. They talk about families, wives and girlfriends and relate to each other through very personal confessions. The armies that met at Gettysburg were not from the social elite. They didn't have Harvard degrees or the pedigree of political bluebloods. They were in large measure immigrant Irish or German kids from northern farms and factories or poor scratch farmers from the piedmont of Virginia, Georgia, Texas and North Carolina. Just as in Iraq today soldiers then came from every corner of our country to meet in harsh and forbidding places in far corners of the world, places that I've seen and visited but can never explain adequately to those who have never been there.

Soldiers suffer, fight and occasionally die for each other. It's as simple as that. What brought Longstreet's or Hancock's men to face the canister on Little Round Top or rifled musket fire on Cemetery Ridge was no different than the motive force that compels young soldiers today to kick open a door in Ramadi with the expectation that what lies on the other side is either an innocent huddling with a child in her arms or a fanatic insurgent yearning to buy his ticket to eternity by killing the infidel. No difference.

A civil war soldier was often lured from the slums of New York or Philadelphia and coerced into the Army by promise of a 300 dollar bonus and 25 dollars a month. Patriotism and a paycheck may get a soldier into the Army but fear of letting his buddies down gets a soldier to do something that might just as well get him killed.

What makes a person successful in America today is a far cry from what would have made him a success in the minds of those who we honor here today. Big bucks gained in law or real estate, or big deals closed in the stock market make some of our countrymen rich. But as they grow older they realize that they have no buddies. There is no one who they are willing to die for or who is willing to die for them.

A last point of history before I close today. The Anglo Saxon heritage of buddy loyalty has been long and frightfully won. Almost six hundred years ago the English king, Henry V, waited on a cold and muddy battlefield to face a French army many times his size. Shakespeare captured the ethos of that moment in his play Henry V. To be sure Shakespeare wasn't there but he was there in spirit because he understood the emotions that gripped and the bonds that brought together both king and soldier. Henry didn't talk about national strategy. He didn't try to justify faulty intelligence or ill formed command decisions that put his soldiers at such a terrible disadvantage. Instead, he talked about what made English soldiers fight and what in all probability would allow them to prevail the next day against terrible odds.  Remember this is a monarch talking to his men:  his story shall the good man teach his son;

From this day ending to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered;
We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
For he today that sheds his blood with me shall be my brother;
And gentlemen in England (or America) now a-bed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
And hold their manhood's cheap whiles any speaks
That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.
You all here assembled inherit the spirit of St Crispin's day. You know
and understand the strength of comfort that those whom you protect,
those in America now abed, will never know. You will live a life of self
awareness and personal satisfaction that those who watched you from afar
in this country who "hold their manhood cheap" can only envy.

I don't care that virtually all of America is at the Mall rather than at this memorial today. It doesn't bother me that war is an image that America would rather ignore. It's enough for me to have the privilege to be among you. It's sufficient to talk to each of you about things we have seen and kinships we have shared in the tough and heartless crucible of war.

Some day we will all join those who are resting here. Over a campfire of boiling coffee and frying bacon you will join with your Civil War band of brothers to recount the experience of serving something greater than yourselves. I believe in my very soul that the Almighty reserves a corner of heaven, probably around an inextinguishable campfire where someday we can meet and embrace; all of the band of brothers throughout the ages to tell our stories while envious standers-by watch and wonder how horrific and incendiary the crucible of violence must have been to bring such a disparate assemblage so close to the hand of God.

Until we meet there thank you for your service, thank you for your Sacrifice, God bless you all, and God bless this great nation.

John O'C:

I read this several times and I'm still of mixed emotions.

From the War of 1812 forward, the USA has morphed away from the Dead Old White Guy's founding documents, and their spirit. Slightly at first, and each war or infringement bending it away just a little more. The Civil War was clearly a shift from republic to empire. And, as the gooferment gets bigger and bigger, so to the theft by taxation from the people.

Now as you know I'm a vet {and I should have added like you John}, but wasn't in the shooting. But, when called I put my butt in the grist mill. Luckily my talents had better use. But at NSA, I knew the blood and guts that were being expended by "brothers" further from home. I knew then that the "leadership" was looking at different facts then the "people". SO I am very empathetic for the GI who's doing their best to follow their orders. I get the Saint Crispin's Day "band of brothers" as well as anyone who hasn't "seen the elephant", faced the music, or been on the wrong side of a fire fight.

*** begin quote ***

Henry didn't talk about national strategy. He didn't try to justify faulty intelligence or ill formed command decisions that put his soldiers at such a terrible disadvantage.

*** end quote ***

And, I do hold all these political "leaders", who did this, personally responsible for the bad decisions and terrible consequences paid in other people's blood, sweat, and tears. I would NOT honor any of these ... these ... bozos. I firmly believe that a President, Congress Critter, or any gooferment bureaucrat should be allowed to put troops in harm's way if they have never been their themselves. The wars are started by old men secure at home and fought by young men in far away lands.

I do support the troops. I'd support all of them coming home now. Every boy and every girl. Home. Now. Spike the guns and grab the first thing moving tin the right direction. As you probably know, I don't support either flavor of big gooferment political party. We should become more like Switzerland. A porcupine of defense; no offense. Trade with all; treaties with none. End all these foreign adventures.

So, I think these people, like the general, can't be allowed to use the sacrifices of good people to cover that they are complicit in the "leading" that puts more of us in harm's way.

I don't know what you intended, and I'll push the article you submitted, just know that I'm not sure that you aren't letting the General off easy.

fjohn68

{JR: I know this is long, but I thought worthwhile. I know John O’C as a great Jasper and the co-owner of the Manhattan Prep Yahoo Group. And, I still can’t put my finger on why EXACTLY I want to hold the General, and all the so called “leaders”, to account for all the myriad of wars we’ve been put into to. Maybe it’s senility, old age, sadness, or Great Brother Jasper’s Ghost — and I get St Crispin’s Day — maybe the lessons of the Good Brothers I had at the Prep who were all WW2 battle scared vets — but I am mad. Mad at being misused. Mad at all my fellow vets paying a big price, or the ultimate price, for these politician’s venial and mortal sins. I hold everyone O6 and up thru out our history and especially every politician who didn’t “just say no” to the misuse of the people’s trust. Maybe the hippies of the 60’s and the peaceniks of the 70’s have finally brainwashed me. I’ve been to Gettysburg and was stunned at the waste of human life in a war over taxes and big government. No more. Donna Nobis Pacem. I guess I’m a now a complete nut. What fools we are to believe in the gooferment. It’s an illusion. A deadly illusion. I pray all the “band of brothers” get home safe.}

{JR: Thanks to John O’C for helping me distill my thinking. You’ve made me even more radical than I was before. }

I really didn’t think about using a picture of Brother Jasper. First I didn’t have one. Second, I’d have to get the rights to use it. The picture of the rock on Wikipedia is free. Hi Mr. Reinke,

I was reading through your weekly edition again and found so many interesting articles.

First, I would like to send my condolence out to all of the families that have lost love ones recently.  I am sure that they are experiencing a very painful time presently but I hope that they try to keep in mind that their love ones are now in a very happy and joyous place with God.

Secondly, I was very pleased to see that Kristen [n.b. 2006 Carroll, Kirsten] was provided additional help by our alumni community in her search for a career, displaying the kind of help and support that Manhattan College alumni can provide as a unified community working together.

Thirdly, it was fantastic to hear that a new alumni has joined on, King T. Lam (class of 1978).

Lastly, it was a great pleasure to read the article about the fantastic work that James Powers (class of 1965) has done in the past and is still presently conducting through his work and effort. I wanted to congratulate him on achieving the Lifetime Achievement Award for Meritorious Contributions to Neuropathology.

Bye,
Sheryl LaShaun Chung (Class of 1996)

{JR: Welcome to the world of inet research. Looking for X and find Y. With no one to answer the question “what went wrong”. I always suggest that job searchers “google” their own name to see what kind of “digital dirt” their future employer will find. Better to deal with it ahead of time. So now that you’re not a lawyer according to the inet, guess you have to pursue that travel planner gig full time. (referring to Mike’s profile on LinkedIn.)  }

John:

I'm hoping that my fellow Jaspers can help me in my search for an IT Director/Manager position in the tri-state area.  Unfortunately, due to a reduction in the technology work force at my prior company, my position as Director of Technical Services was eliminated.  As you can imagine, the job market is extremely competitive and any direct contact or information about a position could be very helpful in standing out in the vast pool of candidates.

I'm a 1992 graduate of Manhattan's business school with a concentration in Computer Information Systems.  I really enjoyed my time at Manhattan and appreciated the "team/family" atmosphere among students and faculty.  When I am at Jasper games with my two oldest sons, I find myself jumping right back into that Jasper enthusiasm.

Any company IT contacts or available IT management position information would be greatly appreciated.  Please send me an e-mail reply if you would like a copy of my resume.

Thanks for whatever help you can provide.

Go Jaspers!!

Sincerely,
Grant Galimi

{JR:  I sent Grant my “jobsearch first aid kit” as well as invites to do the Vulcan Mind Meld on LinkedIn, LinkedIn_Jaspers, my “Turkey Farm”, and my blog for the job search advice. Being “out” stinks. But as we become a nation of 5 year employees, it’s inevitable. You can read my rants on my farm and blog. I don’t do all my ranting here.}

BEST NIGHT OUT. GET TO ‘EM WHILE THEY’RE HOT! ZAGAT RATES NYC, NIGHTSPOTS
BYLINE: BY CHRIS ROVZAR

Just when you thought you could make your own decisions about where to go out at night, the Zagat juggernaut has released its latest New York City Nightlife rankings.

Clubs, lounges, bars, restaurants and even hotels - this guide to the hip tries to get to the bottom of a basic question: If it’s dark outside and you’re not tired, what do you do?

This year’s rankings include scorching-hot newcomers like the Beatrice Inn, Tenjune and the Box, as well as still-cool standbys like Pastis, Bungalow 8 and Tao. And as Zagat’s Tiffany Barbalato points out, they’ve even thrown in helpful lists of the best niche bars - like Meat Markets, Speakeasys, Frat Bars and Rooftops - so you can tailor any evening to entertaining a hot date, or just your weird cousin from out of town. Here is a selection from the 2007 guide for each of the boroughs, with Zagat’s own ratings.

By 2017 Social Security will begin paying out more in benefits than it collects in taxes and will have to begin redeeming bonds from the Social Security Trust Fund. Worse, Medicare is expected to cross the same line later this year, resulting in a massive fiscal crisis.

Redeeming what?

Oh you mean those worthless IOUs written by past Congresses to future benfit recipients?

I’m sure the Chinese Government will happy to discuss them with you. I’d envision, as the largest Creditor, they’d be in charge of the reorganization.

When will we learn?

Don’t trust the gooferment with anything as important as money, retirement, or … … really any thing!
