FLASH! Important info received after the deadline

Stand by, “we”, the Jasper Jottings editorial team, will have some interesting news about a new capability in the next two weeks.

EXHORTATION

Upon reflection on the VT shootings, I am enraged at the politicians. The Virginia politicians put those children in harm’s way. The Federal politicians by not saying to Virginia, “Now see here, in the Second Amendment, it clearly says …, so your diktat is unconstitutional!” are just as guilty. Us’ens by not insisting on exercising our God given rights as recognized in the Constitution are equally to blame. Gun Free zones are an invitation to criminals to have their way with anyone they see. The Lambs may lie down with the Lions on the final day. But, until then, wasn’t there an admonition “Let he who is without a sword, sell his cloak and go buy one”. This from the Prince of Peace. What better way to have peace than to have people able to defend themselves. And to defend others. Sorry I usually try to present some thing positive and up lifting to start the week. But, in this case, I am filled with righteous indignation that someone would put the weak, the young, and the women at such a disadvantage. I urge you to search your soul and put pen to paper. Our politicians need your guidance. For my part in allowing this to happen, I am truly sorry. I’ll pray for forgiveness and try to make amends by being more vocal. You do as you see fit. I am sad.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

News Release
May 4, 2007

Dr. Joseph Reynolds, Former Chair Of Manhattan College’s Chemical Engineering Department, Dies At 71

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Dr. Joseph Reynolds, a member of the chemical engineering faculty at Manhattan College for more than four decades, passed away on Tuesday, May 1. He was 71.

Reynolds joined the College in 1964 and served as chair of the chemical engineering department from 1976-1983. Prior to his arrival at the College, Reynolds taught high school chemistry and physics full time at LaSalle Academy in New York City from 1957-59, and college chemistry part time for The Catholic University of America while pursuing his doctoral degree.

Reynolds was a four-time recipient of the Outstanding Teacher award given by Manhattan College’s Tau Beta Pi honor society, the national honor society for students of engineering.

“I think that the students really enjoyed his courses,” says Dr. Walter Saukin, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at Manhattan College. “They clearly learned a lot about preparing for class and the importance of being on top of their game, making sure they understood the course work, and making sure it’s a working knowledge.”

As part of his academic duties, Reynolds served for many years as moderator of the student chapter of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and was president of the College’s Sigma Xi chapter, the national honor society that recognizes original research in pure and applied sciences. Off campus, he developed and taught courses in hazardous waste incinerator calculations for the Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Pollution Training Institute.

“It seemed that Manhattan College and its students and faculty had a warm place in his heart,” Saukin adds.

Reynolds presented many papers and chaired sessions at technical meetings, coordinated continuing education programs in connection with those meetings, published several articles in science and engineering journals, and served as general chairman of a national conference on energy and the environment.

Reynolds was a member of the Air and Waste Management Association and the American Society for Engineering Education, as well as the honorary societies Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, Phi Beta Kappa, the national honor society for liberal arts colleges, and Phi Lambda Upsilon, the national honor society for chemistry. He was listed in American Men and Women in Science, Who’s Who in Technology Today, International Who’s Who in Engineering and Who’s Who in Engineering.

“He will be dearly missed by all those whose lives he touched,” says Ronald Leone ’67, former director, systems management operation at The BOC Group, and a consultor to the College’s chemical engineering department. “Joe was the embodiment of the spirit and tradition that so richly permeates the department.”

Reynolds, a Bronx resident, received a B.A. in chemistry from The Catholic University of America and a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

A wake will be held on Friday, May 4 at Riverdale-on-Hudson Funeral Home in Riverdale, N.Y., from 4:00-9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Professor Joseph P. Reynolds Scholarship for Chemical Engineering, c/o Manhattan College, Office of Planned Giving.

Jaspers fan a genuine loss at RCC

(Original publication: April 29, 2007)

*** begin quote ***

Every now and then, someone walking past my home will stop to offer either a compliment, gripe or idea for a column.

About four years ago, a new neighbor - a fellow about my age who always wore a Manhattan College baseball cap with the school nickname, Jaspers, across the front - started doing so regularly.

He knew my name and recognized me as a fellow Manhattan College alumnus. Although I didn’t recognize him when he introduced himself, I knew the name instantly.

Bill Weisgerber and I weren’t friends in college, but we had crossed paths and now, more than 30 years later, we were neighbors. We talked about my work and his, both as a securities and insurance broker and financial planner and as a teacher on the adjunct faculty at Rockland Community College.

But mostly, we talked about Manhattan’s basketball team. We both followed the team, but he knew that in recent years I had been crazy about the West Virginia Mountaineers since my daughter started school there.

Bill took that to mean he had to keep me up to date on Manhattan recruiting, new additions to their schedule and the search for a coach to replace Bobby Gonzalez, who was hired away by Seton Hall.

He was pleased with the Jaspers’ 10-8 record in the MAAC Conference this past season under new coach Barry Rohrssen.

I had hoped to go to their first game in the conference tournament in Bridgeport on March 3, and to ask Bill if he wanted to tag along. But when they drew an afternoon game, I had to skip it.

A few days after they lost that game to Siena, Bill and I met on our street.

We did a quick season review, and I asked if he had gotten to any games. He had made it to one early on, he said, but couldn’t drive that far anymore.

“Let’s make a point of getting to two or three next season,” I said.

“I’d like that if it’s possible,” Bill said, “but I’m terminal. I have pancreatic cancer.”

I told him I was sorry, and he told me about going with his father, also a Manhattan grad, who was visiting from Michigan, to purchase a grave at St. Peter’s Cemetery in Haverstraw. He joked that he now owned property, but didn’t have to worry about taxes.

That was Bill, laughing in the face of a killer illness.

Folks at RCC who knew Bill during more than 20 years teaching there talk about his dignity facing death, his devotion to his economics students - who called him The Professor - and his passion for the Jaspers.

Jim Thelen, who has taught math at the college for 33 years, saw Bill there every Saturday. They always talked sports and basketball, Thelen says. More than a decade ago, they had gone to a game together and Thelen saw a transformation. “This man, who was reserved and measured in his speech and everything he did, was up there with the students, basically making a fool out of himself and proud of it.”

“This gentle soul,” Thelen says of Bill, “is part of my heritage at RCC and in Rockland County.” Among students and faculty, he says, “he was very much beloved. A little quirky, but that’s not bad.”

Gene Homicki, who graduated from St. John’s University, started teaching math at RCC in 1980, five years before Weisgerber.

“Bill and I had a standing comedy routine,” Homicki says. “I would ask him why Manhattan College was called Manhattan College, since it was located in Riverdale (the Bronx). He would give me the history of Manhattan College. ‘It was founded in Manhattan,’ he’d say. ‘Well, when they moved to Riverdale, it should have been renamed Riverdale College.’ My logic would drive him nuts, and make him laugh.” Despite the rivalry between Manhattan and St. John’s, Homicki says, he always looked forward to Bill’s visits.

“Bill enjoyed living,” he says. “Being in the classroom and being at RCC were very important to him. Teaching is a wonderful profession, and Bill was a wonderful teacher. We will miss him, but we know that he is in heaven.”

Martin Lecker, who was chairman of the business department from 1991 to 1995 and from 2002 to 2006, says Bill would always volunteer when the department needed someone in an emergency.

Lecker thinks that was part of a kindness Bill always displayed. “Bill was very student-oriented and a very kind soul. He would do anything to help out the students or RCC,” Lecker says.

One of those students, Joshua Roberts of Suffern, says, “Professor Weisgerber was probably the nicest person I’ve had as a teacher. He’s made a big impact on me.”

Roberts was in an economics course Weisgerber taught during the short, intense winter break. The way he approached it, Roberts says, it was about much more than economics.

“It was a class about life. He used the class as therapy for himself,” Robert says, adding, “It helped me look at my own life and my problems and realize how minuscule they are.”

During that term, Bill knew how serious his illness was and told students he hoped to finish the spring term. “He always said he would teach until he could teach no more,” Roberts says.

That day came March 26, about three weeks after my last conversation with Bill.

The following Thursday, Bill left for Rosary Hill, a skilled nursing facility in Westchester run by the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne.

Two days later, Gene Homicki and his wife visited Bill. “When we got there, he was reading the paper, and when we left the painkillers were getting to him,” Homicki says. “In almost two hours, he complained only once about the pain.”

On April 12, RCC President Cliff Wood and Roberts, the student trustee on the RCC board, visited Rosary Hill to present Bill a plaque in honor of his long service to the college and his devotion to its students.

Bill died two days later. At his wake, a Manhattan College blanket was draped over his casket. Close by was Bill’s Jaspers baseball cap - the one he’ll always wear in the memories of all who knew him.

JObit: Joseph J. Kiernan (MCattendee)

Staten Island Advance (New York)
April 30, 2007 Monday
JOSEPH KIERNAN, 84
BYLINE: JASON PADERON, STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE
SECTION: OBITS; Pg. A10

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Joseph J. Kiernan, 84, one of the founding members of the Warren M. Jaques Memorial Committee that honors the borough’s top basketball players, died Friday in Richmond University Medical Center, West Brighton.

Born and raised in New Brighton, he graduated from St. Peter’s High School where he served as the manager of the basketball team. He went on to attend Manhattan College in the Bronx and later received a bachelor’s degree from New York University, Manhattan.

Mr. Kiernan served in the Army during World War II as a staff sergeant in the European and North African theaters. Upon his return from the war, he lived in New Brighton, Brooklyn and Grant City before settling in Randall Manor in 1958.

ADVERTISING DIRECTOR

Mr. Kiernan was the director of advertising for 40 years for the Singer Sewing Company in Elizabeth, N.J., retiring in 1988.

Fellow Army soldier Warren Jaques, a member of the St. Peter’s basketball team that Mr. Kiernan managed, was killed during combat during World War II.

Upon his return from the war, Mr. Kiernan and other members of the high school basketball team wanted to honor their fallen teammate.

As a result, they formed the Warren M. Jaques Memorial Committee almost 60 years ago to honor the Island’s top male and female basketball player annually. Since then Mr. Kiernan had played an important role in the committee, rarely missing a meeting. He also served as the committee’s chairman twice over the years.

“Joe Kiernan was the committee. Joe just kept the work going and kept the organization going during its hardest times,” said the committee’s current chairman Marty Doherty. “Many organizations start and they all start with a good purpose, but 10 years, 15 years, 20 years down the line, they just cease to exist. Next year will be 60 years and the reason for it is a person like Joe Kiernan. He and the other founding members devoted a great deal of time and energy to it.”

“He had an awful lot of common sense,” added former District Attorney William Murphy, a Jaques Committee member since 1977. “Joe never thought he was the smartest guy in the world. He would look around and figure out who had the best ideas about a situation and highlight them by doing it. He got a lot of people to come together who probably wouldn’t have been inclined to.”

REMAINED ACTIVE

In addition to his work with the Jaques committee, Mr. Kiernan continued to remain active well into his later years, playing golf and taking part in the Staten Island Senior Olympics.

He was also a longtime volunteer at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in West Brighton, now known as Richmond University Medical Center.

“Every day he and his wife went to visit people at the hospital, usually right after mass. Most of the time they visited people they didn’t even know. He and his wife are two of the finest people that I have ever met,” said Doherty.

Mr. Kiernan served as the treasurer of the Holy Name Society at Sacred Heart R.C. Church, West Brighton, and was an usher during mass on Sundays.

CREATED ARTWORK

An artist, he often sketched pictures of landscapes while serving in the Army. After returning from the war, he recreated many of the sketches on canvas using oil paints. He also made special occasion cards for family and friends.

“So many people loved him because of his great sense of humor. He will remembered because he treated everyone with respect and kindness,” added his nephew, Jamie Wood.

Surviving are his wife of 57 years, the former Margaret (Peg) Larkin, and three generations of nieces and nephews.

LOOKUP

The funeral will be Wednesday from the Harmon Home for Funerals, West Brighton, with a mass at 10 a.m. in St. Peter’s R.C. Church, New Brighton. Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, West Brighton.

Banking exec to lead Young Americans
By Will Shanley

Matt Lynett, former president of Wells Fargo Bank - Metro Denver, will take over as chief executive of Young Americans Center for Financial Education. (Special to The Denver Post)

Young Americans Center for Financial Education today named long-time Denver banker Matt Lynett as its new chief executive.

Lynett, the former president of Wells Fargo Bank - Metro Denver, will begin leading the non-profit next Monday. He takes over for Barbara Danbom, who announced in February that she would step down to help care for her aging parents.

Lynett during a press conference outlined his vision for the nearly 20-year-old non-profit, which seeks to promote financial education through an array of initiatives. The center is also home to Young Americans Bank, nation’s only bank exclusively for youngsters.

“This could be a wonderful model on a national basis,” said Lynett, referring to nascent plans to expand the non-profit’s programs to other parts of the U.S. “That is a goal.”

Lynett pointed to potentially rolling out programs in New Mexico, where the non-profit’s founder, Bill Daniels, the Denver cable television pioneer, who died in 2000, was raised.

“Why wouldn’t we take a peek at Albuquerque and see what’s going on?” he said.

Lynett, 58, holds degrees from Manhattan College in New York and the University of Colorado Graduate School of Banking. He was the chair of the Mile High United Way’s 2005 fundraising campaign.

He outlasted 80 other applicants for the post, said Linda Childears, the center’s former CEO. Childears is currently the president and chief executive of the Daniels Fund, one of the Rocky Mountain region’ largest charitable foundations.

“He was the clear choice,” said Childears, pointing to Lynett’s experience in banking, non-profits and fundraising. “He brings everything to the table.”

OSU biz school dean named interim provost
Business First of Columbus - 1:30 PM EDT Monday, April 30, 2007

***Begin Quote***

Ohio State University has chosen the head of its business school to serve as interim provost.

Trustees are to vote May 4 on naming Joseph A. Alutto, dean of the university’s Max M. Fisher College of Business, to the job as the school’s senior academic administrator effective July 1.

He would replace Barbara R. Snyder, who’s leaving June 30 to become president of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

The permanent provost is to be selected by the successor to OSU President Karen A. Holbrook, who’s retiring in June. Steve Mangum, Fisher’s senior associate dean for academic programs, will be acting dean.

Alutto, 65, was hired as Fisher’s dean in 1991.

“Under his leadership, the Fisher College has expanded and made significant improvements in rankings and a number of other indicators,” Holbrook said in a statement. “I am confident that with his leadership, the momentum of our academic programs will continue to move forward.”

Alutto already coordinated the activities of several university schools as executive dean for professional colleges. He is also the business school’s John W. Berry Sr. Chair in Business and is a professor of management and human resources. He has a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Manhattan College, a master’s in industrial relations from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in organizational behavior from Cornell University.

BEST-SELLING BIRTHDAY

The Colony Hotel in the town of Palm Beach, Fla., served as the perfect venue for the 60th-birthday celebration of best-selling author James Patterson on March 22. Word is that among the 15 guests were three present and former West Brightonites - all longtime friends of the honoree.

Tom McGoey, Ned Mahoney and Jim Dowd joined in the festivities with Jim’s family, school chums and advertising big wigs from his long career with J. Walter Thompson.

The three - all grads of St. Peter’s High School for Boys - met Jim while they were students at Manhattan Collegein Riverdale - and have remained friends for some 40 years. They, along with another West Brightonite, the late Joe (Cubba) Denyeau, would meet regularly for steak dinners in Manhattan, play golf and partake in summer vacations at Patterson’s Mantoloking, N.J., summer home on the Atlantic.

McGoey, a retired U.S. Customs inspector, still resides in West Brighton, while Mahoney, a retired teacher with the Westchester/Putnam system, resides in Sleepy Hollow not far from Dowd, a vice president at UBS and a Larchmont, N.Y., resident.

Regular readers of Jim’s dozens of best sellers will recognize that fictionalized characters bearing these names occur in most of his books. And his recent “Mary. Mary” was dedicated to the four, amongst others.

Coincidentally one of the invitees was Bob Hatfield, who attended Marist College with Staten Islanders Dan and Billy Kuffner, Tom Dolan, Brendan Burke and Steve Tirone, the noted Staten Island sculptor.

Jim, an avid golfer, hosted a group of duffers the following day at the Trump International Golf Club.

Modern baseball developed in New York, Philadelphia and Boston in the 1830s and 1840s and was well on its way to becoming the national pastime when the Civil War erupted in 1861.

This scholarly book by George B. Kirsch, professor of history at Manhattan College, documents games played in camp between battles and in Union and Confederate prisons when the men were healthy enough to take the field.

However, Mr. Kirsch, by necessity, spends considerable time examining the periods immediately before and after the war, which in many ways is more fascinating because - let’s face it - no mere game can compete with the drama of the Civil War.

MNEWS: ExxonMobil, Employees, Retirees Donate

Business Wire
May 2, 2007 Wednesday 4:00 PM GMT
ExxonMobil, Employees, Retirees Donate More Than $3.2 Million to New York Colleges and Universities; 97 New York Institutions to Receive Educational Matching Gift Grant
DATELINE: IRVING, Texas

ExxonMobil announced today that more than $3.2 million has been donated to 97 colleges and universities in New York through the ExxonMobil Foundation’s 2006 Educational Matching Gift Program.

ExxonMobil employees, retirees, surviving spouses and directors contributed more than $934,000 to New York institutions of higher education in 2006, which was matched by the ExxonMobil Foundation with $2.3 million in unrestricted educational grants. Due to the critical need in mathematics and science education, the Foundation is encouraging college and university presidents to allocate a portion of the unrestricted funds to programs directed at improving math and science education at their universities.

Initiated in 1962, the ExxonMobil Foundation’s Educational Matching Gift program matches gifts to higher education on a 3-to-1 basis and has provided more than $347 million to higher education in the United States. This year, the program’s combined contributions provided 953 colleges and universities across the country with more than $33 million. Individual donations totaled more than $9 million which was matched by the ExxonMobil Foundation with an additional $24 million.

“The success of ExxonMobil’s Educational Matching Gift Program is a testament to our employees’ deep commitment to education,” said Kenneth P. Cohen, vice president for public affairs, Exxon Mobil Corporation, and chairman, ExxonMobil Foundation. “By supporting institutions of higher education, ExxonMobil and our employees are investing in the development of new technologies, future leaders, social progress and economic advancement.”

Under the ExxonMobil Foundation’s Educational Matching Gift Program, a donor can give up to $7,500 a year to colleges and universities with which he or she is affiliated and the Foundation matches those gifts on a 3-to-1 basis up to $22,500. The affiliation requirement is waived for gifts to the United Negro College Fund, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the American Indian College Fund.

ExxonMobil Foundation is the primary philanthropic arm of the Exxon Mobil Corporation in the United States. The Foundation and the Corporation engage in a range of philanthropic activities that advance education, health and science in the communities where ExxonMobil has significant operations. In the United States, ExxonMobil supports initiatives to improve math and science education at the K-12 and higher education levels. Globally, ExxonMobil provides funding to improve basic education and combat malaria and other infectious diseases in developing countries. In 2006, Exxon Mobil Corporation, its divisions and affiliates, and ExxonMobil Foundation provided $139 million in contributions worldwide, with $54 million dedicated to education. Additional information on ExxonMobil’s community partnerships and contributions programs is available at www.exxonmobil.com/community.

PRENTY HAPPY WITH SYNTHETIC NY PITCH

CONNACHT COUNCIL secretary John Prenty says he’s confident that the new synthetic pitch at Gaelic Park will be ready in time for the Connacht Championship clash between New York and Sligo on Sunday week.

Some concern was generated in Sligo GAA circles when officials from the county were informed by their New York counterparts at the annual GAA Congress in Kilkenny on April 14 that work had not commenced on the pitch at that stage - just four weeks before the date of the match.

However, Prenty yesterday claimed that the alteration of the pitch surface, which is a joint venture between the New York GAA Board, and Manhattan College, the owners of the ground, had started a week ago, and that he expected it to be completed two or three days before the opening round fixture.

Amy: That's good. I was just concerned that I didn't meet expectations. I am sorry about your grandfather. I miss the one I knew; never knew the other. Thanks for the URL. I'll include it in next weeks Jasper Jottings. It didn't mention MC so my automated searches wouldn't find it. And our ace Times news hound, MikeMcE missed it. Have to speak to him severely about that. He's supposed to have a complete alumni roster in his head at all times. ;-)  (I'm always amazed at not only the number he does recognize but the intermarriages, cousins, partners, and tales he comes out with.) We are all a little poorer now. I always feel when I "do" obits that there was a great tale in there somewhere and I missed it. As well as all the Data, Information, Knowledge, and Wisdom that person had that is now unreachable. I like to think that Jasper Jottings in some way catches snapshots of those tales. Rockville Centre Residents’ Voice Party Announces Mayoral, Trustee and Village Justice Candidates for June 2007 Election: Karamouzis, Sullivan, Bumbaca, Croutier Nominated

Rockville Centre’s Residents’ Voice Party has announced the nomination of sitting Trustee, Andrew P. Karamouzis, as the Mayoral nominee for the Residents’ Voice Party. Ralph Bumbaca, a ten-year village resident has also been nominated by the Residents’ Voice Party for RVC Village Trustee Candidate. Mr. Karamouzis and Mr. Bumbaca join sitting Trustee Suzanne Murphy Sullivan, who previously announced that she would seek re-election to her position. Rockville Centre’s Residents’ Voice party gained popularity in large part due to perseverance in addressing many village residents’ quality of life concerns, including overdevelopment, parking, safety and beautification. Siobhan E. Moran and Kevin Glynn, are the Campaign Co-Chairs of the 2007 Residents’ Voice Party.

I met this ill guy

I met this ill guy at a conference today in Albany. He asked me where I was from so I told him I lived in NYC but was originally from NJ. He told me he was from Syracuse and I asked him if that was far from Albany. He seemed to take offense to the quesiton. He said “You’re from NJ and you don’t know where Syracuse is!?” I was a bit taken aback because he seemed genuinely angry with me so I smiled and apologetically said, “I’ve never been there” to which he exlaimed, “Have you ever been to Africa?” WTF is this fool talking about, I thought. “No” I said, having never been to Africa. He then asked me if I knew where Africa was. I felt as though I had been hit below the belt and was caught a bit off guard so I sheepishly said “Yes” - I did know where Africa was. He then said sarcastically and angrily “Well you know where Africa is but you’ve never been to Africa; it’s the same with Syracuse; it’s just geography.” Whoa son I guess you told me.

What I found offensive was not so much his jeers toward my lack of upstate NY geography expertise but rather that he knew I’d never been to Africa. Why couldn’t I have ever been to Africa? I might have been to Africa; my parents have been to Africa. By just looking at me did he think “Oh THIS sort of girl… she has SO never been to Africa… the Jersey Shore maybe, but never Africa”?

So then he asked me where I was from in NJ and I told him Bayonne and he acted like he knew where that was and again seemed to take offense at my genuine surprise that he knew where Bayonne was (after the conversation ended I thought to myself ‘I bet this guy has never heard of Bayonne in his whole life.’)

He then asked where I went to school. I said “Fordham in NYC” and he abruptly got up and said “Oh. Can’t talk to you.” I said “Ok” because quite frankly I didn’t feel I could talk to him either. He accompanyied his abrupt exit with the alleged factoid that Fordham was his college’s rival school. Manhattan College is rivals with Fordham Univerisity?? I never heard that before though. I think he might have made it up.

Syracuse, lol.
