Moment of silence for Va. Tech victims
By MATT APUZZO, Associated Press Writer 24 minutes ago

*** begin quote ***

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Silence fell across the Virginia Tech campus at noon Friday and bells tolled in churches nationwide in memory of the 32 victims of the deadliest shooting rampage in modern U.S. history.

*** end quote ***

I’m not going quibble about the wording. I’m not going to gripe about how the victim disarmament fanatics lead us to this disaster. I’m not even gonna kvetch about the politicians are using this tragedy for their own purposes.

I am going to say a quiet prayer for all those parents, and loved ones, whose lives are destroyed by this senseless act of a delusional person.

I am going to reflect on the astonishing example of the Amish community who went and consoled their attacker’s family. That’s living your beliefs.

Do we measure up? I know I don’t. Maybe you do. I think it’s a higher standard to strive for. imho!

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Tranax announces new board, preps company for growth
17 Apr 2007

***Begin Quote***

FREMONT, Calif.Tranax Technologies Inc. has created a board of directors, a sign of the company’s preparation for growth, it says.

“We’ve brought in a very experienced team of senior executives to help steer the company — all of whom have successfully built large global, high-technology companies,” said Tranax founder and chief executive Dr. Hansup Kwon. “They bring a wealth of experience and expertise in operations, finance, strategy and management. Their purpose is to help Tranax Technologies be in position for its next phase of growth.”

The role of the newly created board of directors will be to serve as a sounding board and counsel to help the CEO and executive team. The board also is expected to implement practices and strategies as well as oversee hiring.

The five board members are expected to serve three-year terms. The team compromises non-executive directors Wolfgang H. Hausen, Jack McDonnell Jr. and Dr. Kathryn S. Hanson; executive directors Dr. Kwon and Heemook Kwon. Diane Holt Frankel will serve as board counsel.

Faceoffs are a critical aspect of lacrosse

When Manhattan College discontinued its wrestling program, Jim Ardizone was an athlete without a sport.

Until he discovered lacrosse.

Ardizone, now the boys varsity lacrosse coach at Tappan Zee, found a similarity between the sports.

“When they were facing off, it was kind of like wrestling for the ball,” said Ardizone, who graduated from Manhattan in 1999.

Rudy Re: Rosie: “I Never Thought Of Her As An Engineering Expert”
Town Hall - Washington,DC,USA

***Begin Quote***

HH: Let me play for you a little Rosie O’Donnell on 9/11 looking back.

RG: (laughing)

HH: Have you heard this clip yet, Mayor? Have you heard her talking

RG: I don’t know.

HH: Let’s play Rosie O’Donnell from a couple of weeks ago.

RO’D: I do believe that for the first time in history, that fire has ever melted steel. I do believe that it defies physics for the World Trade Center Tower 7, Building 7, which collapsed in on itself, it is impossible for a building to fall the way it fell without explosives being involved. World Trade Center 7. World Trader 1 and 2 got hit by planes, 7 miraculously, the first time in history steel was melted by fire. It is physically impossible.

HH: What do you make of that, Mayor?

RG: I just never thought of her as like an engineering expert, but you’d have to go back to the people who studied that. And World Trade Center 7, if I recall correctly, came down around 4 or 5 o’clock in the afternoon. And my partner, Mike Hess, who was then my Corporation Counsel, was one of the last two people to get out of World Trade Center 7. He almost died there. And I was in a building that was pelted by…what really happened is World Trade Center 1 and 2 bombarded World Trade Center 7. And I was in a building next to World Trade Center 7, and we were trapped in that building for 20 minutes, and that building took a considerable amount of building.

HH: But what do you make of public people…

RG: It was a little further away, so…

HH: What do you make of public people firing up this nutter conspiracy theory? Does that injure our understanding of what we’re in?

RG: Well, I’ve always thought that conspiracy theories, and I’ve heard all the wild ones, you know, I’ve been subjected sometimes overseas, sometimes here, you know, kind of really wild ones. I won’t even repeat them, they’re so wild. I’ve always been very clear on September 11, and I don’t know why we have to have conspiracy theories, when we know who did it. (laughing) You know, we know that these 19 people took those airplanes and flew them into buildings in order to kill innocent people. They’re the ones responsible for it. None of this would have happened unless they did that. Everybody else, you know, everybody else involved, and it was doing the very best they could to save as many lives as possible. Some did it effectively, some didn’t do it as effectively, but they were all trying, you know? This idea of going back and trying to figure out what did the Bush administration know, what did the Clinton administration know in order to blame people is really unfortunate. If either anybody in the Bush administration or the Clinton administration had known about September 11, I think they would have done everything they could to stop it. What we do is, we just…when we do that, we displace the responsibility where it belongs.

{JR:   Note: I went to injineering school and, unlike Rosie, I wouldn’t think of opining on what is basically a complicated issue of “strength of materials” and “structural engineering”. If the experts that I trust say it went down due to the planes, then any conspiracy wacko has a high standard to impeach those experts. I don’t believe any story by anyone but you have to take experts at their word. Not politicians; real experts.}

MNEWS:$1 MILLION DEFAULT PREVENTION GRANT

US States News

HIGHER EDUCATION SERVICES CORPORATION ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF $1 MILLION DEFAULT PREVENTION GRANT
BYLINE: US States News
DATELINE: ALBANY, N.Y.

***Begin Quote***

The New York State Higher Education Services Corporation issued the following news release:

The New York State Higher Education Services Corp. (HESC) will award $1 million to 29 schools to help prevent student loan defaults, HESC President James C. Ross announced today.

The grants, ranging from $4,800 to almost $50,000, will be awarded to competitively selected colleges and universities for their proposals designed to identify risks that contribute to student loan default and to develop and implement new programs which have the best potential to significantly reduce the dollar amount of defaulted loans.

“The U.S. Department of Education encourages continued efforts to ? reduce default, minimize the volume of dollars that go into default each year, and prevent student borrowers from the individual tragedy of loan default,” said Mark Walsh, Acting Director of Default Prevention and Management at the U.S. Department of Education.

“As many schools point to a lack of the necessary resources as an obstacle to engaging in proactive default prevention activities, the availability of grants enables more schools to become involved in this important work,” continued Walsh.

“HESC is pleased to award these competitive grants acknowledging the U.S. Education Department’s focus on default prevention and to improve financial literacy among students across New York,” said Ross.

“The 54 default prevention proposals HESC received demonstrate the dedication of financial aid administrators as they help their students manage their student loans,” Ross continued. “The winning proposals represent the most innovative approaches to this difficult problem.”

For example, Jefferson Community College will strengthen its outreach to high risk populations with a financial outreach specialist. The specialist will coordinate financial literacy sessions for incoming freshmen to increase financial awareness and money management skills.

The campus, located near the Ft. Drum Army base, has many military students in the population who are typically highly mobile and with whom losing touch is fairly common. Workshops and counseling will be targeted to these students and their families.

Additionally, the proposal will link the workshops to a credit-bearing course, Personal Finance, to increase the number of students exposed to formalized instruction in personal financial management.

Syracuse University’s winning proposal included the funding of a loan education specialist and in certain cases, giving a grant to help those students who may have to borrow excessive amounts to fund their education.

The grant winners are:

Grant recipients will be expected to report their progress after six months, with a final report due to HESC by March 26, 2008.

HESC is the nation’s largest in-state student loan guaranty agency and provides more grant and scholarship money to college students than any other state in the nation.

The state agency guaranteed nearly $7 billion in new and consolidated student loans in state fiscal year 2005-06 and provided $865 million through the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP) to nearly 395,000 students in academic year 2005-06.

HESC administers New York’s 529 College Savings Program, a nationally-acclaimed program which boasts more than $6 billion in assets, and also handles more than 25 state and federal grants and scholarships.

HESC also provides training and technical services to financial aid administrators, high school counselors, and lenders.

He was my first prefect in the early day when I was sent from Saint Coleman Home to La Salle. I left La Salle in 1960 and joined the Marine Corps for seven years and attended Rockhurst College. Brother Robert like a dad was also interested in my life. I last talked to him about a month before he died. Dear CIC,

I most certainly agree with you that changing hearts is way more important than changing “laws”.  If Roe vs. Wade were overturned tomorrow, nothing would change in New York State, which prior to that infamous decision, had the most liberal abortion statue in the country.  Gov. Spitzer seems intent on further liberalization in case Roe falls.  As the late great John Paul II often said we need to spend 90% of our time changing the culture and 10% on politics.  In his own country of Poland last year only 46 abortions were performed, as for the most part doctors refuse to be complicit in this desperate act.  God Bless,

Kevin Moore  ‘80

{JR:  Well as a Libertarian, I foreswear any use of force to achieve social and political goals. I personally think abortion is immoral in a number of different value systems, including mine. BUT I would never legislate anything on the topic. I would leave it to good people making tough decisions in a supportive environment. That’s a far cry from what we have here. I’m always afraid that the one baby that gets aborted could be the one who cures cancer, AIDS, and diabetes. Or, makes me thin. Or just plays a happy tune. Or makes me laugh. The whole concept makes me sad. }

My name is Darren Johnson and I am an alum of MC, '97.  I have been using the blind address provided by the school for the past few years and in the last week or so have lost the ability to get mail forwarded from it.  I saw some postings that you had written about a problem with the @alum.manhattan.edu email addresses in the past.  Would you happen to know a POC at the school to talk to regarding this?  I have emailed a few folks at the alumni office, but got no response.

Thanks in advance-

Hi Darren,

I'm not exactly sure if you are referring to an alum (@alum.manhattan.edu) or a student (.student@mahattan .edu) email address. (I think alum, but not sure. Probably alum but I never ASSuME any thing! Some times student addresses are left operational due to an oversight.)

If you're referring to the @alum, I don't know what the current status of the offering. I know that at one time they actually gave alumni email service, then it was both service and forwarding, then it was just forwarding. I'm not a good test case because I have an account in conjunction with a committee that I participate on.

Yup, I have several people who just LOVE to hear from me. Especially in my unofficial role of alumni ombudsman (Omm can we find out how to bund this loud mouth once and for all?) I have BCCed all my "buddies" at the College. Depending upon who sober, working, and / or who has nothing better to do, I'm sure one of them will "volunteer" to help solve this problem. What it will cost me in abuse I have no idea?

So to sum up, and please correct me if I am wrong, your xxxxxxxx@alum.manhattan.edu or something like that has stopped forwarding?

OK, ladies and gents on the bcc list, how does this get "fixed"?

{JR: Behind the scenes, several people at the College are working the problem. Sounds like a DNS problem to me, but what do I know. }

{JR: Don’t use free services for anything important? It’s so cheap to have your own domain like http://www.reinke.cc with kool email addresses like jasper john at reinke dot cc that you can then forward as you see fit. Constant product innovation has driven a thriving equipment-manufacturing industry over the last two decades. Innovation’s enabler has been a steady stream of tools and technologies that help software developers work faster and smarter. Developers have clearly benefited from productivity-enhancing tools and technologies. Testers now need 21st-century tools to stay in parity. Without such solutions, test becomes a barrier to innovation.

More than 100 new citizens naturalized in Rockland

Education also brought Margaret Perry, 32, to the United States from her native Ireland.

Fourteen years ago she was recruited on a track scholarship to Manhattan College. Though she had offers to move to Texas, Florida and Boston, “I said ‘If I’m going to America, I’m going to New York City,’” Perry said, explaining that the majority of American images in Ireland came from New York.

After her student visa expired, she stayed in this country on a work visa with Arthur Andersen until the office closed in 2001 during the Enron scandal.

She married her college sweetheart, David Perry, five years ago. The two brought their 7-month-old daughter to the naturalization ceremony.

The United States offers many more perks than Ireland, Perry said, and not just in the job market.

There’s more variety in food, better living conditions and more to do entertainment-wise, she said.

“It’s awesome,” Perry said. “I would never go back to Ireland to live.”

With both her husband and her daughter being American citizens, Perry’s own citizenship will make it easier to travel with her family.

“Having a daughter who’s American, that throws a whole light on the situation,” she said.

Gym Rules

***Begin Quote***

When you enter the fitness center at my school, there are several rules printed out on the entry door: sneakers must be worn, no food allowed, wipe down equipment when finished. You know the stuff. But after this semester, I think they need to add a few more rules, rules that should go unsaid, but clearly need to be reiterated amongst the Manhattan College community. If I had my way, these would be some of the guidelines on the gym door:

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

Europe to Africa by train?
April 12, 2007 - 11:02AM

*** begin quote ***

Engineers have dreamt of it for a quarter-century: linking Europe and Africa at the spot where the two very different worlds gaze at each other across a strip of choppy water.

Now, after seemingly endless studies that turned up more than one nasty geological surprise, a project for a high-speed rail tunnel connecting the continents is gathering momentum, raising the prospect of an engineering marvel on par with the Panama Canal or the Channel Tunnel between Britain and France.

This tube for passengers, cars and freight would bore deep under the Strait of Gibraltar, the narrow waterway where the Atlantic flows into the Mediterranean, and run from Tangier, Morocco to the Spanish town of Tarifa at Europe's southernmost tip, possibly extending further both ways in the future.

*** end quote ***

I hope the tax payers of Spain and Morocco are holding on to their wallets. Everyone loves an engineering marvel. Who pays for it is another story. While I don’t like Donald Trump, for his iincredible ego, google up the story about him and the Central Park Skating Rink. When it’s your money, you pay attention. When the gooferment spends your money, it’s party time!

And that’s the last word.

Curmudgeon
