EXHORTATION

http://www.lewrockwell.com/orig7/mccarthy5.html

A Military Chaplain Repents
by Rev. Emmanuel Charles McCarthy

In August of 1945 Rev. George B. Zabelka, a Catholic chaplain with the U.S. Army Air Force, was stationed on Tinian Island in the South Pacific. He was assigned to serve the Catholics of the 509th Composite Group. The 509th Composite Group was the Atomic Bomb Group. He served as a priest for those who dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. After 22 years as a military chaplain he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. What follows is an interview with him by Rev. Emmanuel Charles McCarthy. Rev. George B. Zabelka went to meet his God on April 11, 1992.

{Begin Quote}

Zabelka: If my priestly silence spoke for the Church in 1945 to the fellows on Tinian, perhaps my priestly request for forgiveness at Hiroshima and Nagasaki can speak for the Church in 1984. You see, I want to expose the lie of "Christian" war. The lie I fell for and blessed. I want to expose the lie of killing as a Christian social method, the lie of disposable people, the lie of Christian liturgy in the service of the homicidal gods of nationalism and militarism, the lie of nuclear security. I want to expose it by looking into the faces of the hibaksha and saying, "Brother, forgive me for bringing you death instead of the fullness of life. Sister, pardon me for bringing you misery instead of mercy. I and my Church have sinned against you and God." It is hope in the Power of that small moment of truth, repentance and reconciliation that moves me to pilgrimage East by the grace of God.

{End Quote}

One really has to wonder at man’s willingness to kill his fellow man. Maybe I too am turning into a pacifist. Like the report of the Jesuit priest who was nearby Nagasaki, this is very moving stuff. Maybe it takes just a while to turn one’s heart into stone cold killer. But over time the corrosive erosion of a war time experience wears down one’s conscience. What happens if good men the world over just say “no” quietly, firmly, steadfastly, and simply “no”.

Might it be worth a try? Clearly we have to start with ourselves first.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

He served as Egremont water commissioner from 1995 to 2001 and was twice elected selectman, serving as chairman until resigning for health reasons in January. He also was on the Advisory Board of Elder Services of Berkshire County for many years.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Oct. 5, 1933, son of Farrell and Mary Molloy Reilly, he graduated from Manhattan College High School, also known as Manhattan Prep, in New York, where he was a member of the varsity basketball, cross country and swim teams. He attended St. John’s University in New York City and graduated from the Port Authority Police Academy. He was an Eagle Scout and played basketball for the Navy, the Marine Corps, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

A Navy veteran of the Korean War, he served from 1951 to 1953 and was assigned to aviation. He was discharged with the rank of petty officer third class.

Mr. Reilly was employed by the Port Authority as a police officer for 33 years at Kennedy and Newark international airports and was operations manager at Newark Airport, retiring in 1989. He then worked at Barnstable Airport in Hyannis as a manager, retiring in 1995. During his career, he met every president from Lyndon B. Johnson through Ronald Reagan and many other dignitaries.

In 1962, Mr. Reilly was awarded the Port Authority Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service after running into a burning building in Elizabeth, N.J., and evacuating the occupants.

He enjoyed everything about airplanes and had his pilot’s license for many years.

He also lived in Howell Township and in Point Pleasant Beach, both in New Jersey, and was a Little League coach and assistant scoutmaster to his sons’ Boy Scout troop in the latter town. He moved to Barnstable in 1989 and to Egremont in 1995.

He and his wife, the former Joan M. Tenny, were married Aug. 20, 1955, at St. Jerome’s Church in Brooklyn. She died July 16, 2002.

Everyone knows I have a broad definition of what a Jasper is, and I don’t think Brother Jasper would object. After all spending 4 years on the Quad without drawing an paycheck should get some type of status?}

John,

Thomas Joseph Chardavoyne, January 22, 1947 - March 30, 2007. Tom didn’t graduate with us in ‘68 because he left Manhattan after junior year, but some will remember him as a larger-than-life figure who was a force in student government. Tom died after a four-month battle with a previously undiagnosed lupus-like illness. He is survived by his wife Sandy, his sisters Karen and Patricia, and his nephew and niece Thomas and Patricia, and hundreds of friends and associates whose lives are better for having known him. He was my best friend and my brother in all but fact for 42 years, and I am bereft.

Anyone who would like to know more, or just to catch up, should please get in touch; my contact information is…

Steve

{JR: Steve I am sorry for your loss. Funny how some people just “stick”. There are many reasons that people leave without graduating, (i.e., money, grades almost got me, “true love”, sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll, maturing in what you want). That doesn’t make them any less a “Jasper”. One can only take hope in that he’s in a better place and we’ll all be there sooner or later. Like Marley’s ghost, we can use it as a lesson to use our time wisely. And cherish what friends we have now.}

Fond memories of Andy Murphy, ‘Mr. Recreation’
By Hugh Reynolds , Political editor

*** begin quote ***

KINGSTON - For almost 30 years, he was “Mr. Recreation” in Kingston, an innovator, pioneer, “Murph” “Andy” or “A.J.” to hundreds of friends and thousands of kids who passed through his programs.

Andrew J. Murphy III, 86, the city’s superintendent of recreation from 1948 to 1976, died Sunday after a long illness.

“He left his mark on generations of kids, from kids in the city’s parks programs, to those who played ball in the various programs he started, to the college students who were playground counselors,” Dr. Nasser Habeeb, a prominent Kingston oral surgeon, said of Murphy’s passing.

Habeeb, 61, served summers under Murphy longer than most, through high school, college and dental school. Assigned to Kingston Point Beach during most of those years, the future periodontist was known by Murphy as “the beach master.”

“We were young. We made mistakes,” Habeeb said. “I never heard him raise his voice, yell at anybody. He’d explain how to do it right and that would be that.”

Habeeb credited Murphy with bringing diversity to the city’s recreation programs. “He treated everybody the same, whether you were a doctor’s kid, lawyer’s kid, poor kid, black or white, boy or girl. He was way ahead of his time in that sense. The changes in society people were talking about in the ’80s, he was doing in the ’50s and ’60s.”

Former Kingston Recreation Commission Chairman Ronald Woods, who worked with Murphy for most of his 28-year tenure, credited the ex-Marine officer with expanding the city’s programs from two or three parks to all 10 parks.

“He had a special feeling for Block Park and the poor kids who came from that area of the city,” Woods said. “He’d put on special events for them. Sometimes he’d take the money out of his own pocket.”

Murphy established programs in baseball, basketball and football for city youngsters, set up adult programs in slow-pitch softball and beach volleyball.

“People marvel at the great athletes we’ve had at Kingston High School. A lot of them got their start in programs Andy established. He understood that if a kid had talent and he wanted to get better, he had to have an organized program,” Woods said.

Woods said Murphy seldom had much of a budget to work with at the Recreation Department, “so he’d go out and raise it himself. It was pretty hard for most people to say ‘no’ to Andy Murphy,” he said.

Murphy and his wife June of 61 years, had seven children, six of whom survive. June Murphy died two months ago.

“He always made his plans around his family,” former Freeman Sports Editor Ed Palladino remembered. “He hated Florida, for instance, but June loved the beach. So down they went. She’d go to the beach. He’d go to the track.”

Murphy, a three-sport star athlete at Kingston High School, attended Notre Dame University before enlisting in the Marine Corps at the beginning of World War II. He was a teammate of and served in the Marines with Angelo Bertelli, the first Heisman Trophy winner in 1943.

“That’s all Andy ever wanted to talk about, Notre Dame football, the Yankees and politics,” Palladino said.

Murphy ran for Kingston mayor on the Republican ticket in 1989, losing to former Alderman John Heitzman by about 1,300 votes.

“They said he was the most popular man in town, but it was probably too late to run for mayor,” Habeeb said.

Palladino remembered Murphy, as others did, as the most helpful of men.

“When I got to town in 1958, one of the first things I did was introduce myself to Andy Murphy, since I was going to be writing about local sports,” he said. “Andy treated me like a father, took me around, introduced me to everyone. He was always my best friend in this city.”

Current recreation Superintendent Kevin Gilfeather, appointed in 1996, recalled how years after he retired, Murphy, a graduate of Manhattan College, helped former co-workers navigate the maze of retirement programs the state offered.

“He didn’t have to do that. He did it because he cared about those people,” Gilfeather said. “Believe me, it was mutual.”

There is a plaque dedicated to Murphy at Dietz Stadium where he served as stadium director for several years after he retired, but none at the Midtown Neighborhood Center on Broadway, his headquarters for most of his career.

Gilfeather called that an oversight that needs to be corrected, “particularly from this department because of the legacy he left us, not just for the workers, but for all the community to enjoy.”

John,

This is a sad way to start the day.

As you mentioned, in the Fanny Farmer building we were put in alphabetical pens. Most of the guys that I knew well have names beginning with C and D.

However, I looked at the '68 yearbook to see if I would recognize John Grant.

I did, but I really don't have a personal recollection of him.

I only remember that he was as Irish as Irish could be.

As you said, "this strikes home" and that was the effect this announcement had on me.

Reading the words in John's obituary made me realize how great the guys were in our class.

I don't remember meeting one guy that wasn't a great guy to hang around with.

Last Saturday, my daughter was married (to a guy from Jersey no less).

In my welcoming toast the topic that I chose was "Create Memories."

Memories are a very powerful resource that we can draw upon to strengthen us and inspire us.

My memories of Manhattan College are great ones....lots of hard work with a lot of great guys.

Thanks for helping me feel reconnected with my Jasper brothers.

Happy Easter,
Vin

Sorry. I do "my obits" early in the AM. It puts my day in perspective. (How's that a bizarre way to spur one's productivity?) Didn't mean to kludge up your day. (Note to self, vc likes his email mid-day.)

I get a little crazed, more so than usual, when it hits "home" (i.e., GSS60, MP64, or MC68). It makes me sad, mad, and apoplectic.

Congrats on your daughter. But you didn't send the good news so I can put it in Jottings. Did want to let the world know how old we are getting? Hey, I think they can figure it out from the snow on YOUR roof. I on, the other hand, haven't changed a bit from school. Or so people tell me.

I remember the fun, but not the work. Hmmm, maybe if my recollections were reversed, I'd be rich, like you!

In any event, enjoy the day. Carpe that old diem. Or what ever you say.

For my part, I say "donna nobis". Not Donna Reed, Donna Summers, but ...

Subject: GOOD NEWS

Dear CIC,

   I would like to share with you and our fellow Jaspers some good news which occurred during this past Holy Week for those of us involved with the pro-life movement.  Two 24 hour prayer vigils were held in front of abortion businesses from 12:00pm Good Friday to 12:00pm Holy Saturday, one in Brooklyn, and one in Queens.  In Brooklyn, out of 39 who considered aborting their child, 17 had a change of heart and committed to life for their child.  Another 10 did not enter the facility, but made no commitment.  In Queens, there were a total of 9 “turnarounds” over the two day period.  I was at the vigil in Queens, and over the course of two days about 50 people came by to pray with us.    It was great to see so many people come out on a cold day to stand up for life in the abortion capital of the world.  God Bless and thanks for Jasper Jottings.

             Kevin Moore ‘80

{JR:  Each one of us has to do what we feel is right. I’m not sure if “abortion capital of the world” is a correct label. And, I don’t think we should ever force our beliefs on people. That being said, we certain can try to sway people over to our way of thinking. Recently on the tv show House on Fox5 in NYC, they had an espisode where the writers lifted that “tiny hand photo” and put it in their story line. After being grasped by the “tiny hand” the lead doc changed calling the fetus to “him”. Maybe we need more wins like that to worm into people’s minds that they are more than a parasitic lump. Maybe we can change “the laws” to stand silent on the issue and allow people to find their own answers. (It does strike me befuddled to call what the gooferment does as a “law”. Diktat maybe. Gravity, now that’s a “law”.) No thanks need for Jasper Jottings; it’s a hobby. Thanks for writing in. It gets lonely here in the editor’s office when there’s nothing to “print”. }

Hi Rocco,

>I googled my name and your website came up.

It's always a good idea to google yourself to find the "digital dirt" that's out there. I counsel out of work execs to do it and get out in front anything there. Even if it's not "you", it has to be addressed.

Who’s Who in Fitness
By Amy Florence Fischbach, Managing Editor

***Begin Quote***

Every industry has its leaders. The fitness business is no exception. The following are just a few of the industry leaders who have made a difference in the industry and continue to do so as innovators, savvy business people or savvy marketers. Their contributions to the industry offer examples that others can follow to advance the cause of fitness in this era of obesity.

{Extraneous Deleted}

Ken Germano, founder, Operation Fit Kids

Ken Germano remembers flipping through muscle magazines as a teenager in Long Island, NY, lifting weights in his basement using his 110-pound bench set and pressuring his physical education teacher to buy weight equipment for his high school’s strength-training room. Decades later, he’s helping other young people get fit through exercise.

The former president of the American Council for Exercise spent more than two decades in the corporate sector of the fitness industry, including a stint at manufacturer Life Fitness. While working at Life Fitness, his company received daily requests from the California Boys and Girls Club for extra Life Cycles. The company obliged when it could, but eventually, Germano decided to help children on a larger scale by starting Operation Fit Kids, which provides used fitness equipment to schools. To get support for his program, he enlisted the help of Arnold Schwarzenneger and set up a meeting with the actor and politician to discuss his idea.

“He patted me on the chest and said, ‘It’s a wonderful idea, Ken. We’ll support you but the challenge is all yours,’” Germano says.

Germano went on to launch the program, in which health clubs donate used fitness equipment to schools and receive a tax benefit for the charitable donations. Upon the donation of his first 300 pieces of equipment, Germano remembers spending hours upon hours in a Los Angeles warehouse taking apart and cleaning the weight machines before delivering them to local high schools.

“It was a labor of love,” he says.

He established fitness facilities in 26 of the 49 Los Angeles high schools. The program has grown to 300 facilities and has raised more than $7 million in equipment and cash donations.

“Being a physical education and a community health educator, I started to see the connection between exercise and physical activity and the role they could play in both physical and mental health,” he says. “By having access to physical activity, the high school students felt better about themselves and had more energy.”

JUST THE FACTS:

Age: 53

Location: San Diego

Education: Germano holds a master’s degree in health education from Adelphi University in New York and did his undergraduate work in biological sciences and physical education at Manhattan College.

Motto to live by: Do what you love. Everything else follows. He also lives by four creeds: It’s not about me. Never take things personally. Never do anything out of fear. Always do your best.

Family: He has a 14-year-old son, Alex, and a 13-year-old daughter, Zoe.

Contribution to industry: He has focused on children’s fitness and founded Operation Fit Kids.

L.O.V.E. Mexico — please help me fundraise!

This June, I’m participating in my very first service trip. I, along with about a dozen other Manhattan College students, will be traveling to Tijuana, Mexico and working with an organization called Los Niños to build schools throughout the community. We’ll also be learning about the border region and Mexican culture, and eating lots of tacos. (Or I can only hope!)

I’m really excited to go on this trip and help the community through our work. I’m already counting on it to be somewhat of a life-altering experience. However, the only obstacle to my participation is the money. As a team, we need to fundraise $13,000. I personally am responsible for raising approximately $980. So far, I’ve raised about $100 — from my parents. And they’re not going to give me any more. :( It’s okay… I still love them.

If you can help me out at all, even if it’s just a dollar, please donate! You can do this in one of two ways:

1. Mail a check, made out to Manhattan College, to:

Casey McNamara
Campus Ministry & Social Action
Manhattan College
Riverdale, New York City, NY 10471

Write my name (Christine Gianino) as the subject of the check. All donations are tax-deductible!

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

http://www.lewrockwell.com/decoster/decoster63.html

Lincoln’s Spectacular Lie
by Karen De Coster

{Begin Quote}

The notion that Lincoln’s Union preceded the states is a tall tale.  Author Tom DiLorenzo, in his celebrated new book, The Real Lincoln, calls it Lincoln’s spectacular lie, as so named by Emory University philosopher, Donald Livingston.

The War Between the States was fought, in Lincoln’s mind, to preserve the sanctity of centralization powered by a strong and unchecked federal government.  Only through such an established order could Lincoln do his Whig friends the honor of advancing The American System, a mercantilist arrangement that spawned corporate welfare, a monetary monopoly for the Feds, and a protectionist tariff approach that stymied free traders everywhere.

{End Quote}

One has to laugh at the con this icon of the USA pulled off. He was the consummate politician – rewarding his friends and punishing his enemies. And, the assassin’s bullet elevated him to “sainthood”.

To me, the war of northern aggression marked the end of the “American revolution”. Instead of the united States of america, we became the USA. To regain our freedom, we need to reduce the size of “gooferment”. A good start will be when Vermont secedes.

And that’s the last word.

Curmudgeon
