Locked in an eternal embrace
Last updated at 14:10pm on 8th February 2007

{Begin Quote}

Yesterday at Mantua, in an amazing echo of that heartrending story, archaeologists revealed the discovery of a couple locked in a tender embrace, one that has endured for more than 5,000 years.

{End Quote}

Maybe this is what the Intelligent Designer had in mind for us all. I don’t know why but this story touched me. I hope that after they do all the stupid tests, they return them to their original state. Sorta seems fitting to this injineers. Maybe that’s how it’s supposed to be. I just found this strangely inspiring. Like an insight into an eternal truth. What you take away from it, I leave to you. Maybe Olds-Hiemer’s is setting in.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

Manhattan College Welcomes Journalist Bill Moyers To Present Lecture On The Nation’s Founding Ideals

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Journalist Bill Moyers will deliver the lecture Making A Difference at Manhattan College on Thursday, April 12 at 7:30 pm. Presented by the College’s Robert J. Christen Program in Early American History and Culture, the lecture focusing on our nation’s founding ideals will be held in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers. The event is free and open to the public.

A winner of more than 30 Emmys and 10 Peabody awards for outstanding achievement in broadcasting, Moyers has spent more than three decades as a television journalist. He began his career as publisher of Newsday, and in 1971 began a 10-year run as host of the Public Broadcasting System (PBS) news program Bill Moyers Journal.

In 1976, Moyers also assumed the role of editor and chief correspondent for CBS Reports and later served for five years as senior news analyst and commentator for the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather. He currently serves as the president of the Schumann Center for Media and Democracy, a foundation that works to renew the democratic process through cooperative acts of citizenship.

Moyers and wife, Judith David Moyers, formed Public Affairs Television in 1986, and in 1995, he briefly joined NBC News as a senior analyst and commentator. The following year he became the first host of MSNBC’s Insight program, and he hosted the news journal NOW with Bill Moyers for three years.

Recently, he hosted the seven-part interview series Bill Moyers on Faith & Reason and a three-part investigative documentary series Moyers on America. His latest series, Bill Moyers Journal, premieres the week of April 22.

The Christen Program is named in honor of the late Robert J. Christen, a Manhattan College faculty member who served for many years on the Board of Education of the City of New York. For his many contributions to education, the Riverdale Public School 81 is named in his honor.

For more information about this event or The Christen Program, please contact Julie Leininger Pycior, professor of history at Manhattan College, at (718) 862-7126 or e-mail julie.pycior@manhattan.edu.

Members of the media wishing to cover this event may contact Scott Silversten at (718) 862-7232 or e-mail scott.silversten@manhattan.edu. Manhattan College is located at West 242nd Street near Broadway in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, one mile from the Westchester County line and accessible by MTA subway lines 1 and 9.

Founded in 1853, Manhattan College is an independent, Catholic, coeducational institution of higher learning offering more than 40 major programs of undergraduate study in the areas of arts, business, education, engineering and science, along with graduate programs in education and engineering. PHILIP T. "SKIP" SHEEHAN, 76, of MONMOUTH BEACH

Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 04/2/07

PHILIP T. "SKIP" SHEEHAN, 76, of MONMOUTH BEACH, died Saturday, March 31, at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch, surrounded by his loving family. Born August 31, 1930, in Long Branch, and raised in Brooklyn, N.Y., Skip was a graduate of Brooklyn Prep High School and Manhattan College. He lived in Fair Haven for several years before moving to Monmouth Beach in 1995. Skip spent his entire working career in the banking business, starting with the Irving Trust Company, New York, in 1956 and retiring from Fidelity Union Bank, Newark, in 1995. He also served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. A rabid sports fan with an encyclopedic memory, Skip was the "go-to" guy whenever one of his family had a question about his beloved Brooklyn Dodgers, New York Mets, or the New York Giants football team. The tenth of 14 children of George and Loretto Sheehan, Skip's sparkling sense of humor and easy laughter enlivened many family gatherings, where he loved to reminisce about his youth in Brooklyn and summers at the Reservation, Long Branch. Skip also loved to keep in touch with his many friends and frequently traveled to New York City to meet with classmates from his days at Brooklyn Prep. Skip's family often said of him that he was always a gentleman, which he was - a truly calm and gentle man who laughed often and rarely had a harsh word for anyone. He was a loving and caring father and a proud grandfather who loved to talk about his grandchildren and their accomplishments. He will be sorely missed.

Skip was predeceased by his parents, George and Loretto; his brothers, George, Jim, and Jack; and his sisters, Arline Hopkins, Joan Kelly, Patsy Daly, Anne Murphy, Honey Holsey, and Margie Mullin. He is survived by his sisters, Sister Mary Sheehan RSCJ of Greenwich, Conn., Fran Fountain of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., and Liz Sheehan of Monmouth Beach; his brother, Mike of Monmouth Beach; his son, Rome; and his wife, Maria of Brooklyn; his daughter, Traci and her husband Chris Van Thull of Coloma, Calif.; his daughter, Susan and her husband Ted Ferguson of Portland, Ore.; his son, Tim and his wife Sarah of Glenview, Ill.; and his grandchildren, Julia and Layla Sheehan, Matteo Van Thull, Ted, Emily, Ennis, and Joseph Ferguson, and Kate Sheehan.

Visiting hours will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at John E. Day Funeral Home, 85 Riverside Ave., Red Bank. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Church of the Precious Blood, Monmouth Beach, followed by interment at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Donations may be made in his memory to the Wellness Community - Northern Jersey Shore, 580 Patten Ave., #52, Long Branch, NJ 07740. Letters of condolence may be sent to the family through the funeral home's Web site at www.sidun.com.

Fighting global warming one light bulb at a time

Journal Environment Writer

As one of seven children growing up in a working-class family in Providence’s Armory District, Bob Jeffrey revered John F. Kennedy’s calls for public service and appreciated his mother, Gilda, a community activist who fought slumlords and apathetic politicians.

***and***

Jeffrey has provided the support of his agency, the fourth-largest full-service network in the world, to a campaign to raise money to provide energy-efficient, compact fluorescent light bulbs to poor families in New York City.

***and***

Jeffrey attended Manhattan College, majoring in English literature. He came back to Rhode Island for a year, hoping to get a job at The Providence Journal or some other local newspaper, he said.

As long as they don't use tax money, I say more power to them. I'd rather see a Jasper Engineer figure out how to make a LED bulb that was cheaper than a florescent or an incandescent. But till then, this is a good first step.

Burke looks back on honor of school named after him
By IRENE PLAGIANOS
SPECIAL TO THE JOURNAL NEWS
(Original Publication: April 2, 2007)

John P. Burke, former Nanuet Senior High School principal, was always the first to arrive at work in the morning and the last to go home, said Jim Enright, the school's assistant principal.

"He was an extremely hard worker, dedicated to the job and the community," said Enright. "He's a wonderful guy."

When Burke, who spent 33 years in the district, retired in 2000, he received an honor that he said still "humbles and overwhelms" him.

More than six years ago, the district's school board decided to name the high school building, which is home to about 600 students, the John P. Burke Building of Nanuet Senior High School.

Nanuet has a long tradition of naming schools in memory of well-respected educators and administrators in the district. Its lower elementary school is named for former principal George W. Miller, and its middle school is named for former superintendent A. MacArthur Barr

Burke said he was "absolutely shocked" when he was told at his retirement dinner that the school would bear his name.

"I still think that was the best-kept secret," he said. "It was completely unexpected, but deeply appreciated."

A native of the Bronx, Burke earned his undergraduate degree at Manhattan College and later a master's at Iona.

He came to Nanuet in 1967 as business education teacher, but, within a few years, he was appointed principal.

"I think it was the greatest place in the world to be a principal," Burke said. "The students, parents and faculty were really a supportive community."

Burke had a great sense of connection with the student body during his tenure, Enright said.

"He really cared for the youngsters and always had the students' best interest in mind when he made decisions."

Burke, a father of six children and grandfather of 11, recently decided to devote his retirement to more than leisure activities. In 2006, the 66-year-old was elected supervisor of the town of Woodbury, where he has lived with his family since 1969.

Burke said serving in an elected position was similar to his job as a principal. "It's challenging, interesting work that is really all about dealing with different people, which I love" he said. "I have truly been very fortunate in my career."

Jerry Girard Passes Away
From the Journal News with a hat tip to BaseballThinkFactory.org -

{Extraneous Deleted}

Girard was a significant thread stitched in the patchwork of the fan experience during the overall Steinbrenner-Yankees quilt making process. And, his section of the fabric represents what many Yankees fans consider a more fun time than the present day. I enjoyed watching Girard. I hope the Yankees acknowledge his legacy, in some form, during Old-Timer’s Day this season. It would be nice for the fans to be able to cheer for him one last time.

Thanks to Mr. Girard for his contribution. Slightly related, as I expect the media/reporters to be held accountable for every word they say, I’m curious why Newsday’s Yankee beat writer is now Kat O’Brien, formerly of the Ft. Worth S-T, as opposed to Jim Baumbach. I’m happy O’Brien got the job, it was well deserved. But I’m just curious to know what happened to Baumbach. I was 50-50 about him, just wondered.

Baumbach is still with Newsday - he has a regular column now, where, IIRC, he can write about whatever he wants. He mentioned it in his last blog entry before Kat took over.

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

Home Education vs. Public Education
by Jacki LeClair

{Begin Quote}

Scholastic education aside, what about moral education? Public schools are teaching high schoolers proper condom usage, while staying away from such alternatives as chastity. Pro-homosexuality and anti-gun sentiments are being hurrahed in schools, yet prayer is banned. School nurses tell parents that children are not required to receive permission before obtaining abortion referrals through the school. Any aspect of moral education has been wiped out and replaced with an "if it feels good, do it" mentality. As a result, the rebellious attitude and scholastic disinterest of today’s youth are fostered by a permissive and indulgent educational system.

{End Quote}

The Communist Manifesto wanted to indoctrinate the youth into the worship of the State. It has certainly worked here. Even some of our fellow Jaspers having fallen prey to the disease. (John calls it the meme; kind of like a gene for the mind, aka ideas. I call it lunacy.) Government, sorry John, Gooferment has totally wiped out “catholic education”. When you can’t inculcate your own children into your belief system, aren’t you nothing more than sperm or egg donors? Aren’t you a slave to the gooferment? We inherited the American experiment and are leaving the USA empire. It’s a sad recognition. That which passes for “education” now is a disgusting shadow of what we got. It makes me sad. And, will the last Catholic, Jew, or Christian, please turn out the light of religious liberty. It’s right next to the extinguished Statue of Liberty. Maybe Claire Woolfe is wrong? It not too early.

And that’s the last word.

Curmudgeon
