          Today's NY Times has an Obituary on page B7 for Jerry Girard age 74, (also know as Gerard Alfred Suglia). The Obit states that he attended Manhattan College, but I do not find him under either name in my records. I would guess a Class of either 1953 or 1954.

Jerry Girard, a WPIX-TV sportscaster for 21 years, has died of cancer. He was 74.

Girard, whose nightly reports were characterized by a dry, caustic sense of humor, died on Sunday at Westchester Medical Center, the station said on its newscast Monday.

He was WPIX’s sports broadcaster from 1974 to 1995, after working as a news writer for the station for seven years.

Girard was “a caring friend and a seasoned professional who looked out for younger colleagues,” the station said.

Born in Gerard Alfred Suglia in Chicago, Girard grew up in the Bronx and attended Manhattan College.

A celebration of his life was scheduled for Saturday at Fred H. McGrath & Son Funeral Home in Bronxville.

He is survived by two sisters.

BRONXVILLE - Jerry Girard, a New York City sports broadcaster known for his deadpan wit, died Sunday of cancer at Westchester Medical Center. The Bronxville resident was 74.

Girard worked as a weeknight sports anchor on WPIX-TV Channel 11 from 1974 to 1995, when he resigned rather than switch to weekend duty. He was replaced by Sal Marchiano.

“He was very popular with the viewers, very popular in the newsroom,” Karen Scott, news director for WPIX-TV Channel 11, said yesterday. “He was a hard worker, and he definitely knew his sports.”

The Bronx native, born Gerard A. Suglia, went on the air for the first time at the age of 41, after seven years as a news writer for the station. The Manhattan College alumnus’ early radio career included stints in South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Indiana.

In addition to rooting for his beloved Yankees, Girard was a boxing, basketball and horseracing fan. He liked to read and play pool.

Girard lived in Bronxville for many years. During his retirement, he continued actively following professional sports and listening to the music of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald, his family said.

He did not have children.

A celebration of his life will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at Fred H. McGrath & Son Funeral Home, 20 Cedar St., Bronxville.

Friends may make memorial contributions in Girard’s name to: Hospice and Palliative Care of Westchester, 95 S. Broadway, Fourth Floor, White Plains, NY 10601.

Jerry Girard, a sports broadcaster for WPIX-TV in New York from 1974 to 1995, died Sunday in Hawthorne, N.Y. He was 74.

He died of esophageal cancer at Westchester Medical Center, his family said.

Girard, originally Gerard Alfred Suglia, was born Aug. 6, 1932, in Chicago. He was reared in the Bronx and attended Manhattan College.

He was a disc jockey in Myrtle Beach, S.C.; Gary, Ind.; and Altoona, Pa., before returning to New York as a record librarian at WNEW radio. He moved to WPIX as a news writer before becoming the station’s sports voice.

His nightly television appearances to describe the day’s sports happenings were characterized by frequent acidic commentary, invariably delivered with a straight face.

He is survived by two sisters.

An Electrical Engineer, Edward was an alumnus of Regis High School, Fordham University, and Manhattan College. He served as a Navy Reservist during WWII, and was a career-long Sales and Marketing Executive for Westinghouse. With diplomacy and finesse, he worked, traveled, lived, and made many friends in South Africa, Hong Kong, the Middle East, Paris, and London. Services were held in Garden City, NY on March 20, 2007.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - Francis (Frank) A. Koellner, a lifetime Sunnyside resident, Staten Island history buff and a former chief shipping clerk for Maersk in Newark, N.J., died early yesterday in his home after a long bout with cancer. He was two weeks away from his 90th birthday.

Mr. Koellner was reared across the street from the home in which he died. An avid woodworker, he built the home himself before his family moved there in 1951.

An enthusiast of Staten Island history, he imparted much of his knowledge of the borough to his children and grandchildren, the source of his greatest joy, his family said.

Mr. Koellner was also the oldest active alumnus of the former Augustinian Academy on Grymes Hill, where he graduated in 1936. Afterward, he attended Manhattan College, earning an engineering degree before enlisting in the Army in 1943.

He served as the priority civilian chief in the enlisted reserve in Washington state, and had the rank of sergeant major when he left the reserve in 1946.

Mr. Koellner married the former Katherine Krebbs three years later.

He worked as a sales representative for automobile makers Packard, Cadillac and General Motors before taking a job with Maersk in 1960. He retired in 1991, at the age of 75.

Tom Conway, president of the Augustinian Alumni Association, said Mr. Koellner always attended alumni meetings and was a wealth of knowledge about the Grymes Hill school.

“We were always taught when we went to school to be Augustinian gentlemen,” said Conway. “He truly defined what it was to be an Augustinian gentleman.”

In addition to his wife of 57 years, Mr. Koellner is survived by his daughters, Joyce Flattry and Deborah Bruni; sons Jay and Gregory Koellner and nine grandchildren.

The funeral will be Tuesday from the Harmon Funeral Home, West Brighton, with a mass at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Good Counsel R.C. Church, Tompkinsville, followed by burial in Moravian Cemetery, New Dorp.

Richard J. Farrelly Sr., 75, of Berwyn, a retired engineer, died of heart failure Saturday at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center in Philadelphia.

Among the projects Mr. Farrelly helped develop during his 32 year career with General Electric in Philadelphia were NASA's Apollo reentry system and the MX missile. He often traveled to Europe and the Middle East on assignments. In 1986, he retired from GE as a research and engineering general manager. He then became vice president of Base Ten Systems, a software developer in Princeton, until 2000.

A native of the Bronx, NY, Mr. Farrelly earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from Manhattan College. He earned a master's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Pennsylvania while at GE.

Since 1956, he had been married to Patricia Dillon Farrelly. Her parents, like his, were Irish immigrants. He and his wife often traveled to Ireland to visit relatives, and they shared their love of Irish culture with their children. He enjoyed home improvement projects, the Jersey Shore, mysteries and historical fiction.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters Kathleen, Marianne Boyle, Elizabeth Sur, and Regina Yoegel; sons James and Richard; a brother; and 14 grandchildren.

A Funeral Mass will be said at 6:30 p.m. today at St Katherine of Siena, Lancaster and Aberdeen Avenues, Waybe. Friends may call at 5 p.m."

Eulogy:

Mr. Kelly was born in New York City and grew up in the Greenpoint section of Brooklyn until he enlisted in the Navy at age 17. For the next four years, he was stationed on the USS Bellatrix in World War II’s Pacific theater. After his discharge, he graduated from Manhattan College and became a banker, working for 30 years at the New York Clearing House, where he rose to the level of vice president.

In 1951, he married Marian Torpey and they had four children, moving to New Jersey to raise their family. After retiring, Jim and Marian moved to the Park Forest community in Englewood in 1989. He continued his membership in the Knights of Columbus, which he had joined in 1946, becoming among the founders of a new Englewood chapter. He is also a member of the Elks.

He will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his loyalty to his friends, and his great sense of humor.

He is also survived by his sons-in-law, George Eng and Chris Cardinale; and grandchildren Kelly, Alexander and Geneva Eng.

Memorial contributions can be made to St. Raphael’s Catholic Church, Building Fund, 770 Kilbourne Ave., Englewood, FL 34223.

GALLAGHER, John John Joseph Gallagher, 83, of Mt. Pleasant, the husband of Virginia M. Gallagher, died Friday, March 23, 2007, at a local hospital surrounded by his family. Born May 1, 1923, in New York, NY, he was the son of the late John Gallagher and Emily West Gallagher. John received his elementary and high school education in Catholic schools in Brooklyn, NY, and he graduated from Manhattan College, New York. John and Virginia married in 1948 and together raised three children. He served his country proudly with the US Navy. He spent four years in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. He was stationed at Paris Island in the 19500’s as a LTJG. John retired as a Commander in 1983. As a commissioned officer, he was one of only two nuclear design engineers in the US Navy. John also worked for many years as a senior project engineer at Westvaco Corporation in North Charleston until retirement. He was a member of Christ Our King Catholic Church, Mt. Pleasant. John was preceded in death by his sister, Rita Emily Gallagher Dale. He will be deeply missed by his wife, Virginia; two sons, John Joseph Gallagher, Jr., of Houston, TX, and Gary Brian Gallagher of Kingsland, GA; one daughter, Maureen Patricia G. Charles Sebastian LaCUGNA, Ph.D. What a man, what a life, what a glorious example! Charles was born in Sicily in 1914 and passed through Ellis Island at age six. He was a member of the Christian Brothers de la Salle for fourteen years (1930-1944) and was educated at Manhattan College, Fordham University, St John’s College, the University of Notre Dame, and the University of Washington. He moved to Seattle in 1945 to establish the political science department at Seattle College, now Seattle University. He enjoyed a distinguished forty-year career there as a professor until his retirement in 1987. He served as an arbitrator, mediator and counselor for three decades and authored Introduction to Labor Arbitration (1988). Charles enjoyed a lengthy retirement and was thoroughly engaged in learning, serving others, and deepening his spiritual roots. Few men are as fortunate as Charles, and even fewer are as kind, generous and attentive as he was. We miss his loving presence and wise counsel. Charles died peacefully in Seattle surrounded by his family and a circle of loving friends. He is survived by his beloved Catherine Leahy Mowry, whom he cherished for 59 years; his daughters, Margaret, Mary, Barbara and Teresa; and his son, Joseph. He loved and enriched an extended family that includes his sister, Lucy Yakowenko; sons-in-law, Fred, Terry, Bob and Brian; grandchildren, Peter, Kristine, Shannon, Sarah, Andy, Colin and Graham; and great-grandchildren, Brittany, Marco and Junior. He was pre- deceased by his daughter, Catherine Mowry LaCugna. He extended a warm welcome and easy hospitality to many friends over the years, and this circle of friends mourns our loss. A Celebration of Life Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 27, at St. Joseph Catholic Church on Capitol Hill, his spiritual home for more than fifty years. Hugh Biens starred at Manhattan Prep, a small school located on one floor of De La Salle Hall on the Manhattan College campus. Biens led the Jasper Prepsters to either a NYC title or the CHSAA final four, quite an achievement. The scuttlebutt was that Manhattan College recruited Biens but Georgetown’s pitch included a scholarship to law school. I assume that was within NCAA rules ’cause the Jesuits wouldn’t cross the ethics line, would they? The Christian Brothers closed Manhattan Prep around 1971 as they were running out of Brothers to staff the faculty.

IMHO the government (or as I like to call it the “gooferment”) is not how “we work together”. It’s about someone TELLING someone else what to do! You think “government is often the best way for us to act in concert to better our communities”. I politely but firmly disagree. The truly free market is the “best” way. Who defines “best”? The buyer; not the seller. Even if you say I should do the defining, I don’t like it. Because tomorrow you may insist it’s “your turn”. In a free market, everyone gets exactly as much of a good or service that they are prepared to pay for. They make the trade off; not some bureaucrat deciding for them. No more; no less. It’s that amazing market calculus that delivers exactly what we want. I refer you to Milton Friedman’s lecture on the lowly pencil. The gist is that thousands of people cooperate to give him a pencil. No one was forced to do it. They were all motivated to do it by profit. They might not even like each other but they cooperate. Only the government can force on us crappy services at absurd prices regardless if we want it or not, and kill us when we object. Government is force. I would object to anyone forcing you to do anything; I’d want the same respect extended to all of us. It’s all about perspective. I think the dead old white guys were geniuses. Flawed, but what an “experiment”. My quote – prevoked by the word democracy in your signature is “Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. To sum all of this up, I am interested in meeting some other gamers here on Long Island as the commute/time that Manhattan College typically meets is a bit tough for me to make on a regular basis. I may seem busy, and I am, but if I find a game with a group of nice people, I can and will make time for it. Sundays typically would work out well, and I’d be willing to travel as far west as some parts of queens, and as far east as wading river or port jefferson.

That being said, I hope to meet some of you soon! Sadly I will not be able to make it to ICON at stony brook as I have previous engagements on all of the days this year, but I am sure it will be a blast and that, yes, I am missing out.

Alumni Spotlight: Joe Lennon

Joseph Lennon earned his MA from the Boston College Irish Studies Program in 1996. Since then, he has published widely on Irish, Indian, and British literature and culture. His book, Irish Orientalism: A Literary and Intellectual History (Syracuse University Press, 2004), was awarded the Donald J. Murphy Prize for Distinguished First Book by the American Conference for Irish Studies (ACIS). Irish Orientalism has also drawn high praise from other eminent scholars; Edward Said calls is a “fascinating study” and Stephen Howe characterizes it as “undoubtedly the fullest, most detailed and perceptive analysis of these themes yet to have been attempted.” Lennon earned his PhD at the University of Connecticut in 2000, and is currently Associate Professor of English at Manhattan College. He is also the poetry editor of The Recorder, the journal of the American Irish Historical Society. Professor Lennon will be visiting Boston College in April to offer a graduate seminar on Irish Orientalism.

It’s with a mild chuckle that I watched CIC fjohn68 struggle with his computer problems. Like the proverbial husband watching the plumber, I stayed out of his way. He might have asked me to do something. It’s interesting that out of the struggle comes “Jasper Jottings on WordPress”. It’s a daily Jasper Jottings. I’m quite taken with it. I especially like the Jasper as a rock logo. I’m always fascinated how a warped mind works. Throw a few roadblocks at “our” cic and we wind up with a new better service.
