JASPER EVENTS THAT I HAVE HEARD ABOUT

April 21-29, 2007

Trip to the Italian Riviera sponsored by MC (at least according to the snazzy brochure I was mailed). Book by 10/17 and save $200! 800-323-7373. Sigh!

September 21-23, 2007

Hold the date:

By the way, the Retreat this year is scheduled for September 21, 22, and 23 at the Retreat House in Riverdale.

Hiroshima, the pictures they didn't want us to see

{Begin Quote}

The Atomic Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki killed about 250.000 people and became the most dreadful slaughter of civilians in modern history. However, for many years there was a curious gap in the photographic records. Although the names of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were incised into our memories, there were few pictures to accompany them. Even today, the image in our minds is a mixture of devastated landscapes and shattered buildings. Shocking images of the ruins, but where were the victims?

{End Quote}

As the drumbeats of was with Iran are growing louder around the DC by politicians of both persuasions, it would seem useful to see some pictures. Before I was born, a different administation in a different war did some “interesting” things. I wasn't there. I didn't stand in their moccasins. I didn't face the choices that they had to make. But, they have to bear the results of those decisions when they met their Maker.

We, today, here and now, in the day to day, in the political discourse that leads to the decision, we have a a chance, a duty, a moral obligation to help avoid a national tragedy.

Do your duty! As you see it.

Dona nobis pacem.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless.

West Haverstraw justice resigns, possibly to pursue D.A. Bid
By AKIKO MATSUDA
THE JOURNAL NEWS
Powered by Topix.net
(Original publication: February 16, 2007)

WEST HAVERSTRAW - A longtime village justice announced his resignation yesterday.

Thomas P. Zugibe wouldn't give an exact reason, but politicians around the county said he plans to run for district attorney.

Zugibe, a village justice for 18 years, said in a news release announcing his resignation that he planned to "pursue an importance to all Rockland residents," but didn't specify what those plans were.

"What if I decided to start a big charity and give money to everybody in Rockland County? That would be important to all Rockland residents, wouldn't it?" the Democrat said.

"Our understanding is that he's going to be running for district attorney," said Louis "Butch" Babcock, chairman of the Haverstraw Republican Committee.

Babcock said Zugibe had to resign the justice position because a judge cannot run for a nonjudicial office without resigning.

"I think he's got an uphill battle," Babcock said of the possible challenge to District Attorney Michael Bongiorno, who was endorsed at the time of his announcement two weeks ago by Clarkstown Supervisor Alex Gromack and Ramapo Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence.

Bongiorno, a Republican, announced his re-election plans about two weeks ago at the Suffern Library.

Zugibe said he would make an announcement at 5 p.m. Feb. 27 at the New City Library, although he wouldn't say what kind.

Zugibe, a son of Frederick Zugibe, the county's former chief medical examiner, graduated from Manhattan College in 1975 and St. John's University School of Law in 1979.

The North Rockland High School graduate is married to his high school sweetheart, Peggy.

Zugibe served as a special assistant attorney general from 1979 to 1981 in the office of the state's deputy attorney general for Medicaid fraud control. He was an assistant district attorney in the Rockland County District Attorney's Office from 1981 to 1987.

He was elected village justice in 1989, adjudicating more than 500 criminal cases and 2,500 civil, small-claims and traffic matters annually.

Zugibe said his tenure as a village justice was one of the most rewarding experiences in his professional career.

"I enjoyed that position very much," Zugibe said. "It was a very rewarding position."

Sister Rose Galligan of Notre Dame Academy, Grymes Hill, has been selected to receive the Dr. Robert J. Kealey Distinguished Principals Award from the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA) during the opening night of the National Convention in Baltimore, Md., in April.

Sister Rose is one of 12 principals selected each year for the honor.

Sister Rose was nominated by Dr. Catherine Hickey, Archdiocesan Secretary for Education and Superintendent of Schools.

Sister Rose came to Notre Dame Academy 20 years ago with an extensive educational background. She had been principal at St. Thomas the Apostle in Norwalk, Conn., before joining the administration of Notre Dame Academy.

She also taught at St. Martin of Tours in Kankakee; Notre Dame in Chicago, Ill.; St. Mary's Elementary and St. Mary's High School in Providence, R.I.

Prior to her becoming principal at Notre Dame Academy, an all-girls school from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade, Sister Rose served for six years as a member of the Board of Trustees at Notre Dame Academy. She served as chair for part of that time.

Sister Rose also serves as the Staten Island Representative to the Catholic Schools Administrators Association of New York State.

Under her direction, Notre Dame Academy began a pre-kindergarten program in 1991 and the elementary school currently serves 315 girls from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade.

She led the elementary school to its first Middle States accreditation. She also implemented the Ophelia Project - Creating a Safe School, which is now in its fourth year at the academy. The anti-bully program pairs elementary school students with high school mentors to discuss and role play issues dealing with relational aggression.

She also initiated a school-wide Retreat Day, providing memorable experiences in a prayerful and fun way for all the elementary students.

Sister Rose entered the Congregation of Notre Dame in Bourbonnais, Ill., in 1957, professing her final vows in 1965.

She received her bachelor of elementary education degree from DePaul University, Chicago, Ill., a master of secondary education from Rhode Island College and professional diploma in administration and supervision from Manhattan College.

Sister Rose was recently honored by the faculty of Notre Dame Academy, marking her 20 years as school principal.

US States News
February 14, 2007 Wednesday 2:02 AM EST
KEVIN CAMPBELL TO GIVE 2007 PRESIDENTIAL LECTURE ON FEB. 25
BYLINE: US States News
DATELINE: IOWA CITY, Iowa

The University of Iowa issued the following news release:

Kevin Campbell, Ph.D., the Roy J. Carver Biomedical Research Chair in Molecular Physiology and Biophysics and head of the department, and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator, will present the 24th annual Presidential Lecture, "Molecular Basis of Muscular Dystrophy and Approaches to Therapy," Sunday, Feb. 25. The lecture begins at 3:30 p.m. in the Fourth Floor Assembly Halls of the Levitt Center for University Advancement and is free and open to the public.

In his lecture, Campbell, who also is director of the Sen. Paul D. Wellstone Muscular Dystrophy Cooperative Research Center at the UI Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, will discuss his early interest in muscle physiology and how that led him to investigate muscular dystrophy and discover the molecular basis of several forms of the disease. Campbell will also expand on how these discoveries have helped improve the diagnosis of muscular dystrophy and are laying the groundwork for therapeutic strategies to treat muscular dystrophies.

"I approach muscular dystrophy research as a basic scientist," Campbell said. "I am fascinated by the molecular architecture and machinery of muscle cells, and I am constantly surprised by the number of cellular mechanisms we have discovered that maintain muscle function. I am encouraged by these discoveries, too, because all of these mechanisms provide us with many possibilities for attacking the disease, including drugs to alleviate the devastating symptoms. With enough people working on these avenues we will eventually come up with treatments."

The Preucil School Gansdorf Quartet will provide music for the event, performing String Quartet in F major, op. 3 no. 5, attributed to Joseph Haydn. Gabriella Rizzo and Catherine Rinderknecht will play violin, Sarah Yang will play viola and Nadia Hlebowitsh will play cello.

Considered a world expert in muscular dystrophy, Campbell has authored more than 300 scientific articles and has received numerous awards and honors for his research, including a Scientific Achievement Award from the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the ASBMB-Amgen Award, the Duchenne-Erb-Preis Award and the G. Conte Prize for Basic Research. He also is a member of the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Campbell received a doctoral degree in biophysics from the University of Rochester and a bachelor's degree in physics from Manhattan College. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Banting and Best Department of Medical Research at the University of Toronto before joining the UI. In addition to his appointments in molecular physiology and biophysics, Campbell also is a professor of neurology and internal medicine.

The Presidential Lecture series provides an opportunity for distinguished faculty to present significant aspects of their work to members of the university community and to the general public. The university established this annual series to encourage intellectual communication among academic disciplines, and to provide a public forum for university scholarship, research, and creative achievement.

Dear fellow alum {Privacy Invoked}

Oh, I see, someone returning to their "eternal reward", isn't good news? That's the trick question that I have no answer for.

I do these obit broadcasts with mixed emotions. On one hand, I think it's joyful in the sense that some of these fellow, even as communicated in a brief obit, have made a unique substantive contribution. Even badly described, it fills me with awe at some of those accomplishments. I enjoy seeing how someone reports how they lived. On the other hand, I find it depressing for several reasons: (1) They've left without doing a brain drain. Maybe they had "the answer". (2) For the most part they were "good people" and the world is a "poorer" place without them. (3) I wonder if we are replacing them with the same caliber of Jaspers, since they leave so big shoes to fill.

From time to time, I hear from our fellow alums, or one of the departed's family members, with appreciation for getting the word "out" and I get some story or other that makes me feel that the few minutes I spend each morning has made a meaningful "contribution" to the common good. Sometimes, it means that old friends get to pay respects, close the loop on an old friendship, or just know that someone cared about the deceased.

I've drifted into this self-appointed "ghoulish" duty with mixed feelings. Because of my "technology", I'm probably uniquely able to do it. I keep questioning if it's a "good" or a "bad", positive/negative, or just a rut.

For you, I'd give the advice that if the title says "obit", it's probably not be the good news that you're looking for.

On the other hand, perhaps it might help you: (1) focus on the truly important; (2) put all "problems" in perspective (it does for me); and (3) inspire you to "sing your song", write your "brain drain", or just do something you've always wanted to do. As long as it doesn't hurt anyone else.

So I ask you, should I continue? I struggle with that question regularly.

I think the obits are a very valuable part of what you do. I read them and am often inspired by the accomplishments I read about....family, career, service to ones community...each of these Jaspers leaving the world better than they found it.

I wonder if the writer is one of our younger readers. As you know I share your view that it is important to record the passing of our fellow Alums for many of the reasons you put forth in your reply. I find it inspiring to read what many of them have accomplished after Manhattan, and at the same I am sad that, for the most part, we did not learn of their accomplishments until after they have died.

The possible topic for this years Manhattan College Business Men's Retreat is "What would you like YOUR Obit to read?" or "Living Life (I ain't dead yet!), might give this years participants a chance to share what they have accomplished and look at what they would like to do with the rest of their lives that would be worthy of including in either Eulogy or Obituary,

By the way, the Retreat this year is scheduled for September 21, 22, and 23 at the Retreat House in Riverdale.

Best,
Mike

{JR: Seems like by a vote of 3 to 1, the Obits are deemed “important”. I would like to say that I think we shouldn't have to wait until you (yes you the reader) is dead to get a one paragraph summation of what you've accomplished in your life, what you have learned, or what you regret. See that's all important toward furthering what others can use. I have a quote on one of my websites that says “we stand on the shoulders of others. One reason I blig is to get it all out there. Warts and all. So what is your story, your wisdom, your regrets? I'll start you off I regret never having run track at MC. I can't imagine what my life would have been like if I did. Trivial, maybe, but if I was talking to a youngster, I'd ask if they tried it. Maybe give them an idea. ;-) I know, I know, you don't give someone an idea, they discover it on their own.}

Dear John,

Some of Manhattan's Arnold Air Society's alumni are planning a reunion for later this year or early next. Right now we are in the planning stage and would like to get our group member's opinions about some proposed venues. The voting is taking place at www.TheEmeraldCityGroup.com/AAS and we'd like to be able to make a decision by early March. Thanks for your help.

Dear John,

I agree, but I still think that it is a very nice and worthwhile thing to do! Your message is something that I am sure the Families appreciate very much. It is an indication that Manhattan never forgets!

Keep at it.
Mike

China Dolls
a novel by michelle yu and blossom kan

Michelle Yu is currently an on-air sports reporter. A Manhattan College graduate, she resides in New York City.

Sports and writing have always been my twin passions.

When I was seven, I received my very first diary. Sure, my life wasn't very exciting as a second grader, but I still wrote down everything in my Hello Kitty journal - even what I ate for dinner and my musings on my favorite "T.G.I.F" lineup show "Full House."

When I was 8, my parents sent me to take tennis lessons, and I fell in love with the sport immediately. Every night, I would write about who I beat in tennis camp that day and how I would one day hold that shiny trophy at Wimbledon, just like Steffi Graf.

So, obviously Wimbledon didn't happen, but I did end up becoming a TV sports reporter. Most of the time, I cover sports stories in New York City, but I also interview professional athletes - including Wimbledon players. I've also gotten my second dream - writing for an audience beyond my Hello Kitty Journal.

Currently, I live in Manhattan and juggle writing (with my lovely cousin and co-author Blossom) and my day job as one of those TV people.

http://users.livejournal.com/sparkly_star_/

The Saturday we were there was a big deal, since the New Orleans Saints were playing the Philadelphia Eagles. We were really excited, and thought it would be really cool to go and watch the game with the Saints fans on Bourbon Street. The people of New Orleans are really passionate about the Saints. The story of this season is really amazing, since the floods really destroyed so much, that the people rallied around their team, a team that has basically been terrible since I don't even know when. The love and pride the city has for the Saints is like nothing I've ever really experienced. All day Saturday, you could tell who the locals were, since they were all sporting their Saints jerseys. So we went to the French Market and about t-shirts. Then we walked to Bourbon Street and found a bar showing the game (which wasn't hard, all the bars were). And we watched the game with Saints fans, who were crazy (in a good way). We were sitting in front of some people who had driven three hours for the sole purpose of watching the game in the city. They didn't even have tickets. All of us from Manhattan College were so into the game, and we were going nuts and screaming and yelling and singing (the Saints have a theme song!) the whole time. And then, when the Saints won...Oh my God, probably one of the more fun experiences I've had. Everyone was running around like the Saints had just won the Superbowl. It was just crazy. Everyone was high-fiving and hugging each other. One man, who I didn't know, gave me a hug, and then physically lifted me up of the ground and swung me around. It was so great seeing everyone so happy and excited. I think I'm going to be a Saints fan forever, since I was never that into the Giants or football anyway.

Missing Thai Woman Reappears 25 Years After Boarding Wrong Bus
Wednesday, February 07, 2007

{Begin Quote}

It was just a normal shopping trip when Jaeyana Beuraheng bade farewell to her eight children as she left to cross the border into Malaysia, but it would be 25 years before she would find her way home.

{End Quote}

Don't take a wrong turn!

I thought this was a tragic story. Hard to believe. But it could have been you, an elderly relative, or young child.

Reminds me of the “birds of the field” lesson.

How much did pride factor into being unable to get home? We know there was a lot of ignorance and assuming going on. Next time you meet a tourist, a stranger that's odd, or a young child, remember this woman lost for twenty five years. Next time you're a tourist in a strange place you'll have a clue what she felt.

Just amazing how easy it is to get lost in the shuffle.

And that’s the last word.
