Exhortation

My niece-in-law delivered her third child this week. Simple fact. Baby and Mom did well. I had nothing to do but go visit and make the obligatory comments (i.e., cute / very cute; alert/ sleepy hear, sooo big / sooo hairy). But, it was an interesting time. A time to marvel at creation? A time to observe that less than a day old and could express upset at being changed? A time to wonder what great work is he’s to achieve? Well, before I had all the answers to life’s questions, we left. Leaving behind Mom, Dad, and baby. A family. The root unit of civilization. And, a perfect exhortation. Exhortation to what? Why to consider what is the great work you’re supposed to accomplish. I’m just afraid mine might be Jasper Jottings and that I’ll have done it poorly.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

Longtime village resident Brian O'Toole died on December 18 of congestive heart failure after a hernia operation. He was 54.

O'Toole was born at Mercy Hospital in 1952 and was raised in Rockville Centre. He grew up in a family with 15 children, many of whom are still Rockville Centre residents. He attended St. Agnes Grammar School and St. Agnes High School, graduating in 1970. He went on to Manhattan College, graduating with a B.S. in business administration in 1974.

In 1973, he married Rosemary Murray, who he met at St. Agnes. She had lived down the block from him. The two were married for 25 years.

As soon as he graduated from college, O'Toole began working in the sales department of the Long Island office of Wallace Computer Services, an Illinois-based company. He stayed with the company throughout his entire career, though, because of various mergers and acquisitions over the years, by the time he died the company was known as RR Donnelly. He worked his way up to a sales executive position, but stepped down so that he wouldn't have to travel for business so often and would have more time with his family.

O'Toole lived in Levittown and East Rockaway for a while before moving back to Rockville Centre with his family in 1987.

His children say that O'Toole was a very big family man. "He's part of a huge family," said his son, Brian O'Toole. "He loved his family... The last couple of years, my brother has a daughter and I have a son, and [my father] was really proud of his grandkids."

O'Toole's daughter, Rosemary Herlihy, said her fondest memory of her father was her wedding day, when he walked her down the aisle Other than that, her fond memories of him come from day to day activities such as going out to dinner with him or sitting around watching television. "He was always there for us, me and my brothers," she said. "Anything we needed, he was always there."

Patrick O'Toole remembers his father, who ran track when he was younger, coming out cheer him on during every one of his cross-country and track meets during high school and college. "That's a big memory," he said. "He was always around for those kinds of things."

O'Toole was also known for his love of the outdoors, especially his boat. "We went fishing all the time," said his son Brian. "That was his big passion, going out on his boat and going fishing... He very much enjoyed the outdoors. Growing up, he would go clamming with brothers, and go out on the boat with his father." He said his father often took the family skiing in Vermont and he also loved to golf.

Herlihy added, "He would go out every weekend and go fishing and take everybody out on it."

"My father loved being out there doing things," said O'Toole's son Patrick. "He was not an idle person. He had a full slate all the time... He loved to work. He worked hard. He used to say, 'They don't call it going to fun.' As hard as he worked, he played just as hard."

Both family and friends came to know O'Toole as a friendly, funny and warm-hearted person. "He liked to do whatever was social," his son, Thomas said. "He always liked being surrounded by people, family or friends, and I think that's why so many people came to the wake. He was a very personable man. That's why he was always good at sales. He was never trying to sell anything; he was just trying to make friends."

"He was a funny, funny guy," Herlihy said. "He had a million friends. The funeral services were overwhelming, there were so many people there."

Funeral services were held December 20 and 21 at Thomas A. Glynn & Son Funeral Home. The funeral mass was held on December 22 at St. Agnes Cathedral, followed by the burial at St. John's Cemetery in Queens. O'Toole is survived by his children, Brian, Thomas and Patrick O'Toole and Rosemary Herlihy; his grandchildren Cailin and William; and his girlfriend Ginger Keinath-Bottari.

The Journal News (Westchester County, New York)

Southern/Central Westchester notebook: Eagles off to a flying start
BYLINE: Josh Thomson

SECTION: SPORTS; Pg. 4C

Over the last few seasons, Eastchester would've been hard-pressed to win a game against Pelham and Rye, forget about both. That's especially true with Rye, which has overwhelmed the Eagles in league play in recent years.

"The problem with beating Rye was as much the physical aspect," Eastchester coach Chris Fiore said. "It was a mental thing."

Consider the intimidation factor history. The Eagles went to Rye on Tuesday and beat the Garnets 43-30, one week after they beat rebuilding Pelham 34-22 at home.

Both those wins have helped the Eagles off to a 3-1 start in League III-B. Overall, Eastchester has won four of six heading into today's showcase game against Briarcliff at Manhattan College.

The Eagles (6-6) began the season with four losses in six games, including double-digit defeats to Valhalla, Edgemont and Blind Brook. Their December struggles were compounded by the absence of Kristen Swikata, who graduated in June after starting at point guard for four seasons.

"We had to adapt our game. It took a while to do that," Fiore said.

Eastchester began the season relying heavily on Jaime Lorenzo and Emily Kehoe, seniors who've spent time in the starting lineup since freshman year. Since then, their teammates have emerged to help carry the load and the Eagles' results have improved, too.

Junior Alex Hope has provided versatility, and senior Danielle Massaro and freshman Emily McMahon have combined to fill some of the void at the point.

"We've had better team play on both sides of the ball," Fiore said. "At the beginning, we were standing around waiting for someone else to score. Now that we've expanded roles it's helped every part of our offense."

And changed Eastchester's fortunes.

Dear John,

Brian's late father,  Ed, '47, was inducted into the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984. He was a very loyal Jasper and a great family man.

            May He Rest In Peace!

Dear John,

While doing some research as the result of an article in the latest edition of the NY State Bar Journal, I accidentally came up with the attached article from 1894. It states that the Manhattan College Graduation was held at the Metropolitan Opera House In June of 1894. In the middle of the article is a summary of one of the presentations. Interesting!  (Back to my research!).

(Depressing!) So I am logging them here and hope to pick it up again when I have some spare time. I'm listing the sources to hopefully "guilt" someone into helping. Don't let Congress stifle its critics

{Begin Quote}

Congress is once again pretending to address its own failings by silencing voices it doesn't want to hear.

First, it regulated campaign finance. This was supposed to prevent corruption. It didn't. It merely made incumbents more secure by making it harder for to challengers to raise the funds needed to compete with them.

Now they're proposing so-called lobbying reform

{End Quote}

Don’t let anyone kid you, the congress critters are not “looking out for you”. Not only don’t they read the trash they pass. (See the read the bills act that languishes for a champion.)Not only do they give their responsibility to others. (If they had to declare War in Iraq, to go on record, does anyone think we be there? The last declared war was WW2. The last justified war was 1812.) Not only do they pass all sorts of unconstitutional crap. (War on poverty, drug, and anything else they think the fools at home will believe.) Now, they want to further limit free speech by making grassroots efforts impossible. Join me in telling the bozos “hell no”. America is a free speech zone.

And that’s the last word.
