Brother J. Stephen Sullivan, F.S.C., Former President Of Manhattan College, Dies At 86

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Brother J. Stephen Sullivan, F.S.C., the former 17th president of Manhattan College, died on Tuesday, Jan. 9. He was 86.

Born Jeremiah Thomas Sullivan in Boston, Mass., on June 25, 1920 to Bridget Quirk and John Joseph Sullivan, Brother Sullivan entered the order of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the Roman Catholic teaching order, in 1938 and was given the religious name Brother Casimir Stephen.

Prior to his arrival at Manhattan College, Brother Sullivan instructed classics and theology at De La Salle College in Washington, D.C., and was the recipient of a Licentiate in Sacred Theology (1957). He served as dean of studies and pro-director at De La Salle and guided the intellectual preparation of many of the Brothers teaching in New York and New England.

Appointed assistant professor of theology at Manhattan College in 1959, Brother Sullivan’s teaching and scholarly activities led to his promotion to associate professor in 1963, and that same year he was named the College’s academic vice president. He was appointed executive vice president and provost in 1970, and in 1975 was named president, a position he would hold for the next 12 years.

Under Brother Sullivan’s leadership, the College constructed a new athletic facility, Draddy Gymnasium, which at the time featured the largest indoor track in New York City. He also oversaw the building of Maurice F. Granville Residence Hall, as well as the creation of a new research and learning center that opened in 1985.

During Brother Sullivan’s tenure, Manhattan College established new programs for teaching and rehabilitation of the handicapped, professional ethics, biotechnology, robotics and computer sciences. The College’s peace studies program, one of the first in the nation, was established along with a graduate program leading to the master’s degree in business administration.

In addition, community outreach activities were sharply enhanced with programs directed to the handicapped and senior citizens.

Brother Sullivan is credited with fully implementing the transformation of Manhattan College into a co-educational institution, insuring the integration of women into the entire College curriculum. During this time, the College experienced significant growth in enrollment and began the transformation into a residence institution.

On his retirement from the presidency in 1987, more than 600 guests gathered at a banquet in Draddy Gymnasium to honor Brother Sullivan’s accomplishments.

Throughout his long career in higher education, Brother Sullivan served as an officer or member of the Catholic Theological Society of America, National Catholic Education Association, American Association of University Professors, American Council on Education and the American Association of Higher Education.  He was given an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from La Salle University in Philadelphia in 1979 and an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the College of Mount St. Vincent in 1987.

He was also the recipient of numerous awards, including the Alpha Phi Delta Award in appreciation of devoted service to Manhattan College (1987), and was an honorary member of Delta Mu Delta in recognition of high scholarly achievement.

After leaving Manhattan College, Brother Sullivan served as director of development for the New York Province of the Christian Brothers. He revitalized the quarterly publication of the Lasallian Notes newsletter, and he fostered a personal touch in his relationship with donors. One of his priorities was the proper memorializing of departed Brothers.

Brother Sullivan received his bachelor’s degree at The Catholic University of America, a master’s degree in classical languages at Manhattan College, a master’s in philosophy at Boston College and a doctorate in sacred theology from The Catholic University of America.

Brother Sullivan was pre-deceased by his brother, Rev. John Sullivan, S.J., and a sister, Margaret Sullivan. He is survived by his sister, Sr. Margaret de Sales Sullivan, S.C.

Visitation will be on Friday, Jan. 12 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in The Rotunda in Memorial Hall on the Manhattan College campus.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, Jan. 13 at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers. Interment will follow immediately at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, N.Y.

Founded in 1853, Manhattan College is an independent, Catholic, coeducational institution of higher learning offering more than 40 major programs of undergraduate study in the areas of arts, business, education, engineering and science, along with graduate programs in education and engineering. Exhortation

Did you see the about the fellow who dove under the train to save a stranger in NYC?

I’m not sure I could have done that. He was slender. I’m not sue I would have fit even if the other guy wasn’t there. Perhaps the Intelligent Designer made a small miracle.

It was stunning.

I hope all my tests of moral character are much much smaller.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

Dear John,

             This is a note from Pete Sweeney,'64, about seeing John and his children at the Manhattan Basketball Game on Saturday.

                                           Mike

On Saturday afternoon, I spotted Roland Pinzon, an alum from ’96 and a former MC admissions rep, sitting behind the Manhattan basket.  He was seated next to John. Weldon Jackson was seated on John’s other side.  Bill Harkins and I went over to respectively see Weldon and Roland. By so doing we managed to exchange a “Happy New Year” hand shake with John.  As was the norm, his boys took over the Draddy Gym court after the game and ran circles around the other prospective Jaspers.  We will always remember John and his family.  Fittingly, John’s final home game was a stirring Jasper win.

Patent Partner Richard Pettus Joins King & Spalding's IP Practice;

King & Spalding Continues Its Fast-Paced Expansion in Intellectual Property With Seventh New IP Partner in Past Four Months

DATELINE: NEW YORK, NY; Jan 09, 2007

Continuing its aggressive expansion in the intellectual property arena, King & Spalding, a leading international law firm, announced today that Richard Pettus, a patent litigator with significant experience in the pharmaceutical, medical device and consumer products sectors, has joined the firm's New York office as a partner in its intellectual property practice group. Pettus is the seventh new partner to join King & Spalding's IP group in the past four months and the third new partner to join the firm's New York office in that time period.

"We are excited to welcome Rich to King & Spalding as yet another addition to our expanding IP group," said Courtland L. Reichman, the leader of King & Spalding's intellectual property practice. "Rich is a first-rate trial attorney, who has handled an impressive roster of IP cases during his career and has extensive experience in the pharmaceutical and medical devices industries. He will be an important contributor to our ongoing efforts to expand our intellectual property practice and enhance our services to these industries."

Pettus is the seventh new partner to join King & Spalding's IP practice since September 2006. IP litigators Tony Askew, Steve Schaetzel, Jim Johnson and John Harbin joined the practice in the firm's Atlanta office, and patent lawyers Ken Sonnenfeld and Peg Brivanlou joined the firm's New York office. Sonnenfeld's arrival marked the establishment of a patent prosecution capability in the firm's New York office, which now has a full complement of IP capabilities and more than 30 lawyers and patent agents. In all, the firm's IP group now numbers more than 100 lawyers and patent agents.

Pettus joins King & Spalding from McDermott Will & Emery, where he was a partner. His practice focuses on the litigation and licensing of patents, with particular expertise in pharmaceutical matters, including ANDA Hatch-Waxman actions. He also has extensive experience counseling FORTUNE 250 and emerging pharmaceutical/biotech companies and investors on strategies for IP due diligence, licensing, pre-litigation investigations and patent prosecution. Prior to joining McDermott, Pettus practiced at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius and the patent litigation boutique Hopgood, Calimafde, Kalil & Judlowe.

Pettus earned an engineering degree from Manhattan College and a J.D. from Fordham University School of Law.

"King & Spalding has a tremendous platform for handling big-ticket litigation and has deep relationships with some of the country's best companies," said Pettus. "With the firm's focus on growing the IP group and expanding its representation of pharmaceutical and biotech clients, this is a great opportunity for me. I look forward to contributing to the group's ongoing success."

Book details local man's lifelong spiritual search
BYLINE: FRANCES JAQUES; Staff Writer
SECTION: RELIGION; Pg. A5

Obsessed with writing since his youth, Jerry Tuccille, at 69, reveals his deepest convictions and the tumultuous lifestyle of his early years in his newest book, "Heretic."

It's a story of his break with his birth religion, and also of the Severna Park resident's spiritual search that continues to this day.

"I'm 100 percent Italian, raised in an all-Catholic section of the Bronx, and didn't meet a Protestant until I was 13," he said.

That first acquaintance was a young Lutheran girl who happened to wander into a dance at his church.

"My first thought was that I was dancing with the devil," he said.

But in his book, he writes about getting together with her every Friday until one night the priest chaperone decided they were dancing too close and broke up the relationship.

That first dispute with the Catholic hierarchy was only the beginning of many bumps that ultimately led Mr. Tuccille to become a free spiritual being about the time he finished college.

"I began questioning the virgin birth, the Trinity, the divinity of Jesus, until I was branded a heretic," he said.

Not only did he use the word as the title of his book, but it's a label he proudly accepted then and savors today.

Still, breaking away from an inbred church discipline wasn't easy.

"Even when I had moved away from the Bronx and on my own I was afraid to eat a hot dog on Friday," he remembered. "The first time I was literally shaking but wanted to prove that I could do it."

After he graduated from Manhattan College, Mr. Tuccille headed west - anywhere to get "away from the Bronx," he said.

He landed in San Francisco for a year and then moved on to Australia.

"I bounced around the world writing, always waiting for my book to be published," he said.

In addition to the writing, he was spending time in meditation and "constantly searching for a spiritual meaning.

The book "Heretic" details those early years up until the age of 32. He's writing a sequel called "Gallery of Fools," which will be a memoir of his later years. He uses the word memoir rather than autobiography since he admits that a little bit of fiction creeps in from time to time. In other words, you might call it autobiographical fiction.

But his search for spiritual meaning in his life is real. He's a deist, in that he believes in a supreme being but doesn't want to be labeled with any one faith.

He feels he's more like Thomas Jefferson and Benjamin Franklin in their acceptance of a greater intelligence at work in the universe and that we are all part of that intelligence.

Altogether he's written 22 books, several about the "rich and famous" - like his biographies of Donald Trump, the Hunts of Texas, Rupert Murdoch and Alan Greenspan. His book about Trump sold a half-million copies and is being reprinted.

His spiritual search has taken him from being a devotee of author Ayn Rand and her following to becoming a founder of the Libertarian party. He actually ran for governor of New York as a Free Libertarian in the 1974 election.

After his marriage to Marie Winkler Tuccille and the advent of children, he took a job in the financial field, and he's currently a vice president of T. Rowe Price Investment Services, working in Baltimore. But he hasn't lost his passion for writing and the search for a spiritual meaning of life.

Mr. Tuccille's book "Heretic: Confessions of an ex-Catholic Rebel" is available at Barnes & Noble - at the actual store and online. It's also available from amazon.com.

Manhattan College Faculty Member Receives Fulbright Award

Dr. Pamela Chasek to research in New Zealand from February through August.

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Dr. Pamela Chasek, associate professor of government and director of the international studies program at Manhattan College, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar grant to lecture and research at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand during the upcoming spring academic semester.

Chasek’s project, “Small Islands, Big Issues: Formulating Regional and International Responses to Environmental Problems in the South Pacific,” will examine environmental issues faced by South Pacific island states.  She will address how the government of New Zealand has worked with the small island states of the South Pacific within the context of regional organizations to respond to these challenges.

“I’ve been interested in island ecosystems and sustainability issues for over a decade, and I will now finally get the opportunity to look at these issues more closely,” says Chasek. “This research is quite important because in a globalizing world, it is the small, isolated countries that are being left behind. How can we ensure that their unique culture, history and ecosystems can survive in a world that doesn’t value the small and weak?”

Chasek, who is one of nearly 800 U.S. faculty and professionals traveling abroad through the Fulbright Scholar program in the 2006-07 academic year, will be using her time in New Zealand to better understand the region’s dynamics and its interactions within the larger United Nations system.

In the past, Chasek has examined similar issues in Africa. Her experience should help shed new light on the research being done in a region of the world that is not often studied or understood by professionals in the United States. Most of the region’s experts currently reside in New Zealand or Australia.

Established in 1946 under legislation introduced by the late Senator J. William Fulbright (D) of Arkansas, the purpose of the Fulbright Scholar program is to build mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the rest of the world. Since the program’s inception, 102,900 Americans have studied, taught or researched abroad. Another170,600 students, scholars and teachers from other countries have engaged in similar activities in the United States.

Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected on the basis of academic and professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields.

Chasek is the author and editor of several books on international environmental policy, including Global Environmental Politics, 4th edition, The Global Environment in the 21st Century: Prospects for International Cooperation, and Earth Negotiations: Analyzing Thirty Years of Environmental Diplomacy. She has published articles on the United Nations and its work on environmental issues, and is also the editor of Earth Negotiations Bulletin, a reporting service on environmental and development negotiations at the United Nations.

John,

All is well.  His Grandson "Chuckie" was visiting Mike helping him do projects around the house in Woodlawn.

I'm one of the people who look forward to and read JJ every week.  I can stay in touch with my brother and you at the same time.

May God continue to bless you and sustain you as you strive to build this community of Jaspers.

{JR: Well last time he went awol to the hospital. I guess his chores are all done and his grandson allowed him to come out and play. He’s back with us on a tear – find offline obits, class years, and emails from Jaspers. I’m just glad it wasn’t’ serious. This weekly “build”, or “weakly built” would be a lot harder without Mike. Thanks Ed for the update. And, thanks Mike for the help, just in case I don’t’ say it enough. }

John -

Please remove my name from your distribution. I will contact you at a future date if I'd like to receive distribution at home (vice my office).

Thanks for your efforts.

To whom it may concern:

I'd like to point out that your search engine returns the "wrong" results.

Now, I feel somewhat like the beggar who is being choosey. However, that being said, you might be interested that some of the biggest search engines have similar problems. And, like the iterant peddler, I tell them too.

If you fix yours, then you can be better than "them".

Here's the opportunity. I run an alumni ezine for Manhattan College. Http://www.jasperjottings.com and I search the internet high and low for news about my fellow alums.

At Google, my search is: "manhattan college" with lots of specific minuses, because they don't do it right either.

Search engines tend to parse the exact phrase "manhattan college" as "manhattan" + "college". And, that drags in a slew of errors. Basically any story that mentions a College anything in Manhattan aka NYC gets picked up.

I have a page to explain "manhattan college" that I call "Manhattan College"-ology. Read it if you like.

I need search engines to search for what they assert they are doing -- an exact match. "manhattan" + <space> + "college". Word processors have the concept of an unbreaking space for line formatting.

Be better than Google. Search correctly.

John;

 At the Treasure Coast, FL Alum luncheon today, we talked about your "Jottings" and a few of the fellows asked that I have you contact them to get on the list. The emails are:

Go get 'em!

{JR: Done. Three invites extended. You’re the recruiting leader this year! Err, but their names might have been useful.     :-)  Not that that mere fact would keep me from spamming them with an invite. I just deleted “dear soandso” from my standard invite. There’s no escaping “the process”. Eventually I recruit them all. Kicking and screaming. }

Fonts of Jaspers

Here are sites where "there be Jaspers there". I have no "extra" time to go thru the site, extract the Jaspers, post them in the weekly Jottings, let them know Jasper Jottings exists, and invite them to read it. I have had no volunteers. (Depressing!) So I am logging them here and hope to pick it up again when I have some spare time. I'm listing the sources to hopefully "guilt" someone into helping. Besides while I know that "harvesting" takes a lot of time, these folks thought they could hide from Jasper Jottings!

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

http://www.infoplease.com/ipea/A0934284.html

101 Most Influential People Who Never Lived

{Begin Quote}

Some fictional characters have had more impact on the world than real people. Allan Lazar, Dan Karlan, and Jeremy Salter set about ranking the “characters of myth, legends, television, and movies [who] have shaped our society, changed our behavior, and set the course of history” in their 2006 book The 101 Most Influential People Who Never Lived. The book contains short essays explaining how each character had an effect on the world, whether for better or worse.

{End Quote}

Interesting how this could happen. A fictional character becomes a role model.

But, personally, I think old Ebenezer gets a bum rap. He should have been higher on the list and more emulated. We could use a lot more Ebenezers in DC.

And that’s the last word.
