Character actor Frank Campanella dies in Los Angeles at 87
Wednesday, January 3, 2007
(01-03) 11:07 PST Los Angeles (AP) --

Frank Campanella, the hulking character actor who played tough guys in the 100-plus films and television shows he was in, has died. He was 87.

The 6-foot-5-inch Campanella died Saturday at his San Fernando Valley home, his family said.

"He always wanted to be an actor and kind of influenced me," his older brother, actor Joseph Campanella, said.

One of Frank Campanella's most distinctive roles was his first — Mook the Moon Man on the TV series "Captain Video and His Video Rangers" in 1949. "Guardian of the Safety of the World", private citizen-scientist Captain Video, was assisted by teenage helper The Ranger in fighting off the evil Dr. Pauli of the Astroidal Society and other bad guys, including Nargola, Mook, Kul and Clysmok.

His movie credits included Judge Harper in the movie "Dick Tracy," Pops in "Pretty Woman," Frank the Doorman in "Beaches," Capt. Karl in "Overboard" and Col. Eastland in "The Flamingo Kid."

On television, he appeared on such shows as "The Fall Guy,""Hardcastle and McCormick,""St. Elsewhere,""The Love Boat,""Barnaby Jones,""Maude,""The Rockford Files,""All in the Family,""Kojak,""Route 66" and "Quincy M.E."

Born in New York on March 12, 1919, Campanella enrolled at Manhattan College as a drama major. During World War II he worked as a civilian interpreter, deciphering Italian and Sicilian dialects for the U.S. government.

"We grew up speaking Italian before speaking English," Joseph Campanella said. "We were your big Italian family."

Frank Campanella helped Robert De Niro with the Sicilian dialogue in "The Godfather Part II."

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Jan. 17 at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church in suburban North Hollywood.

ESPNU Reaches MAAC Deal
By R. Thomas Umstead, STAFF

(Multichannel News) _ Alumni of Iona College, Manhattan College and Fairfield University can now catch their team's college-basketball games on ESPNU as part of a three-year agreement between the network and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

The deal, which runs through the 2009-10 season, calls for ESPNU to televise at least eight regular-season men's-basketball games and four Olympic sports events. ESPN or ESPN2 will televise two men's-basketball games each year, as well as the MAAC men's-basketball-championship game.

The new pact also includes distribution rights for MAAC programming across multiple ESPN platforms, including ESPNU.com http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/espnu/index, ESPN360 http://broadband.espn.go.com, ESPN.com http://espn.go.com, ESPN Pay-Per-View, ESPN Video-on-Demand, ESPN HD, ESPN2 HD and ESPN Deportes.

"We are thrilled to have MAAC sports as a regular fixture on ESPNU," vice president and general manager Burke Magnus said in a prepared statement. "This agreement gives MAAC fans an opportunity to see their favorite teams for years to come on our growing national platforms."

Dear CIC,

I hope you had a blessed Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.  As I am sure you are aware, January 22, 1973 was the date of the infamous Supreme Court decision known as Roe vs. Wade, legalizing abortion on demand at any time and for any reason.  To mark this sad occasion and to give a voice to the voiceless, the annual March for Life is held in Washington, DC every January 22nd.  If there are any Jaspers who would like to attend, there are many buses available in the tri-state area.  Anyone in Queens can contact me at c/o Jasper Jottings.  The Archdiocese of New York is running a bus from 1011 First Avenue at 55th Street (cost $35.00). Contact:  sr.lucy.marie in care of the archny.org or call 212-371-1011, extension 3195.  Registration is required for this bus.  In addition, 35 additional buses will be leaving from all over the archdiocese. For information go to www.FLRL.org. Other Jaspers are encouraged to contact their respective Respect Life offices.

Thanks, and keep up the good work.
Kevin Moore '80

{JR: And, if you can't go, then surely you can chip in to defray the cost of the bus. Or, send your congress critter a short calmly well-thought out rational liberty-oriented pro-life charitable message. "Hey Bozo: Stop making laws like Roe v Wade. It ain't a Federal issue. Leave everyone alone to find the right answer. Stop use force to make everyone comply with your view of the world. It's wrong." That's the spirit. I'll leave it up to the Liberal Arts guys to make it politically correct. }

=== FJR aka the CIC explains: ===

There is a movement to create user groups for networking outside of the LinkedIn site.

LinkedIn makes it difficult and expensive to create groups within their world. I tried but can’t do it without the uncooperative alumni office and some money. I pitched the idea to the Alumni Office last year but they were “difficult” and didn’t see any money in it. (Hmm wonder if the LinkedIn Staff and the Alumni Staff are genetically related?)

So the next best thing, (an idea I stole from the other 283 flavors of various LinkedIn Yahoo Groups) was to create “our” own for Jaspers who want to do business social networking with their fellow Jaspers. I also created LinkedIn_New_Jersey, LinkedIn_08824, and LinkedIn_08054. These ideas gave rise to other people starting even more LinkedIn Yahoo Groups to service other geographies and user communities. (Seems like “stealing” good ideas is rampant!)

If you’d like to join, send me a LinkedIn “invite to connect” on LinkedIn via my public profile at http://www.linkedin.com/in/reinkefj AND subscribe at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/LINKEDIN_JASPERS/join. (If we are already connected on LinkedIn just remind me when you join. I’m still a lousey clerk!) Of course, I’ll approve you as soon as I have those two things.

Sorry to make it a little tougher to get in! There’s an informal group of people who are running “LinkedIn Yahoo Groups” and we have established this as the authentication mechanism. Several Yahoo groups were destroyed by abusers and had to be recreated. Hence the stiffer entrance requirements.

Pearls2Video - Sisters Help Family, Friends And Athletes Capture Precious Memories

"There's only one gift in all the world that can be given to me alone, only one gift I can give that is truly unique. That is the gift of my memories, captured and preserved and passed on to the people I love." - Emily Barnes from Timeless Treasures

Kim J. Harmon

It started as a way to preserve some family memories, but it quickly blossomed into something so much more.

About a year and a half ago, Judy Curran of Newtown discovered some old family film which featured six family members who had recently passed. Along with her identical twin sister, Jenny Manning of Southlake, Texas, they put together what they had and found themselves with 90 minutes of the kind of boring home movies that are gathering dust in basements and attics all over the world.

But once they started editing, the two sisters soon found themselves with 20 minutes of clips that were pure gold.

{extraneous deleted}

Curran has done the highlight video for the Newtown High School baseball and boys' soccer teams and, locally, has done recruiting videos for Kristi Nowak (on her way to Virginia Teach), Tara Gaston (now at Gettysburg College) and Alex Konneker (now at Manhattan College). She has also done a promotional video for snowboarder Sean Ryan.

What she did for Gaston and Konneker was even more than a recruit video. She followed them for a year, capturing images of them in action on the soccer field, at graduation and at the prom and included shots of Newtown and scenes with their friends.

(Depressing!) So I am logging them here and hope to pick it up again when I have some spare time. I'm listing the sources to hopefully "guilt" someone into helping. Besides while I know that "harvesting" takes a lot of time, these folks thought they could hide from Jasper Jottings!

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

Finishing up the list from Saint John’s. (The University, not the actual Saint John!)

# Ensuring environmental sustainability

# Fostering a global partnership for development

These two smack the most of a political agenda. There are so many assumptions in these two it is hard to rant them all out. Let’s take the two biggest whoppers.

“Sustainability” is a code word for the “sky is falling” Malthus thinking. It’s were going to run out thinking. The secularists use that as an excuse to give government more control over people, urge higher taxes on the “wrong” behaviors, and push population control. The “Catholic versions” have the same non-sense but lighten up on the birth control.

“Global partnership” means more government like the UN. As if that would do anything for the poor of the world. Don’t get me started on the UN or any such global government, or as they put it a “global partnership”. It their thugs in government colluding with our thugs in government. And, “development” as they see fit.

So this is just more of that “liberal” (in today’s sense, not the Classical Liberalism that emphasized freedom) “Social Justice” (i.e., Government Socialism) “feel good” thinking that passes for
rationale argument” in today’s “educational” institutions.

This type of nonsense hasn’t restrained global tyranny, given the poor or the world clean water ‘n; enough to eat, or preserved everyone’s God given human rights. Instead this thinking perpetuates government socialism on even grander scales ‘cause eventual it has to work. Insanity! Leave people alone to find “their” way in God’s world. With truth, justice, and fairness. MYOB, but help by being the best example of liberty in the world.

A truly free market satisfies everyone; using force to achieve social goals always hurts the “little guy”. If we would just get governments out of the way, then the world would be a better peaceful place.

And that’s the last word.
Curmudgeon
