Dear CIC,

I hope you had a blessed Christmas and best wishes for the New Year.  As I am sure you are aware, January 22, 1973 was the date of the infamous Supreme Court decision known as Roe vs. Wade, legalizing abortion on demand at any time and for any reason.  To mark this sad occasion and to give a voice to the voiceless, the annual March for Life is held in Washington, DC every January 22nd.  If there are any Jaspers who would like to attend, there are many buses available in the tri-state area.  Anyone in Queens can contact me at c/o Jasper Jottings.  The Archdiocese of New York is running a bus from 1011 First Avenue at 55th Street (cost $35.00). Contact:  sr.lucy.marie in care of the archny.org or call 212-371-1011, extension 3195.  Registration is required for this bus.  In addition, 35 additional buses will be leaving from all over the archdiocese. For information go to www.FLRL.org. Other Jaspers are encouraged to contact their respective Respect Life offices.

Thanks, and keep up the good work.
Kevin Moore '80

{JR: And, if you can't go, then surely you can chip in to defray the cost of the bus. Or, send your congress critter a short calmly well-thought out rational liberty-oriented pro-life charitable message. "Hey Bozo: Stop making laws like Roe v Wade. It ain't a Federal issue. Leave everyone alone to find the right answer. Stop use force to make everyone comply with your view of the world. It's wrong." That's the spirit. I'll leave it up to the Liberal Arts guys to make it politically correct. }

Funeral Held for Right-To-Die Author

The Church is a private club. It has the right to set its rule and make its own judgments. And, I am not the arbiter of moral conduct. I have enough trouble with my own ethical challenges and "small" temptations where I am sadly often found lacking.

But, I find the Pro-Life discussion so important and interesting in the conflicts that it brings out. The inconsistencies. The stupidity.

I have learned from doing the Jasper obits that every life has value. Often in ways we can't see. So I mourn every human loss for what I will never have an opportunity to learn from that person.

I find it interesting that the Catholic Church, the Church of Saint Thomas Moore, doesn't hold self-proclaimed Catholic pro-abortion politicians to the same standard that it did this poor fellow. If we have to measure "life", then clearly snuffing out a life at the beginning is far worse than killing a suffering old man. These politicians are given a free pass on the issue by the Church and their fellow Catholics to allow the murder, the genocide, of wholesale generations of people. Forever foreclosing their contribution and that of their progeny.

When we get to the pearly gates, if there are such, and we ask our Creator, "Why did I suffer from poor vision?" (A silly example but you get the idea!) And the Creator responds "Why my child did you kill little Sally Rogers — the child of a poor woman in the US, Embabwe Yosi — the child who died of starvation in Africa, Indira Mahatma — the child who was sex selected in Asia, and Abdul Aman — the child who died of polio because he didn't get the vaccine in the East? They were there to together collaborate and invent the 20/20 drug that would with one injection cure blindness and give everyone perfect vision for life."

Yeah, I know I ain't Aesop. But can't you just see it?

We often say that the funeral is for the living. I saw the picture of this fellow's mom.

I suggest that perhaps a better strategy would have been: to give the fellow a funeral with a good homily about: how with free will we can be wrong, the value of life, but we should never be uncharitable.

And, make every "catholic" politician listen to it.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

In Memory of Greg
Gregory Williams (9/29/81 - 12/10/06)

Our dear friend Gregory, saddly passed away last night on December 10, 2006.  Waking up to that phone call at 3:15am on Monday of December 11 by another best friend, telling me our best friend is dead...not something you think of even believing.  I couldn't even understand how something would happen.  I was very confused.  Then 10 minutes later, it all hit me like a ton of bricks...that's when the tears started flowing.

Greg, well at least the night before he was with all of us, his best friends, celebrating the holidays with some drinks!

I'll never forget his goodbye to me that night...I was sitting on the couch being entertained by Bones and Greco drunk singing and dancing to the country channel.  When we decided that we were too tired and drunk to go out, Greg decided to leave to do his thing...he came over to me and gave me a kiss and hug goodbye..."Love ya" I said to him, not know that was the last time...

Greg, was an amazing person, lazy but amazing...lol.  He had this way about him...no matter how you were feeling, Greg would always be there to lift you up and make you smile and laugh.  It was usually with his sense of humor or his own smiles and laughs that made us all feel better.  He was comforting.

We will all treasure all the memories that Greg gave us, good and bad...although, I can't think of one bad memory I have of Greg...he was always so loving and giving.

Atlantic City - his favorite place - we went there for his birthday 3 years in a row - and that place, with all of us there, always made him so happy.  All his best friends in one place, going out for him, was his favorite part of all.  We still plan on going year after year on his birthday in honor of him, to remember him, his happiness, and what he loved most of all.

I think we will all never forget Greg getting ready for our Camping trip to Lake George wearing his green velour sweatsuit.  Hysterical!  How about his trip on the tube, in the back of the boat?  The HUGE smile on his face as we slowly drove the boat for him and he bounced up and down with the waves.  Greg was such a great sport...doing things he never dreamed of doing, but he did them, to make his friends happy!

There are many many more memories we have with Greg including times at Manhattan College - Jasper, East Hill, Overlook, Southbend, Fenwicks, Boss Tweeds - times at 492, 4242, shoveling out cars, holidays, celebrations, dancing, etc...

Greg will always be in our hearts, minds, and souls.  I believe he is watching over us and making sure that we are happy and still having fun - like he would want us to have if he was still here with us!

Love you Greg, Rest in Peace!

The Journal News (Westchester County, New York)
December 26, 2006 Tuesday RK Edition
Clarkstown parks chief retires
BYLINE: Christina Jeng
SECTION: NEWS; Pg. 3A

CLARKSTOWN - After more than 30 years with the town Recreation and Parks Department and its superintendent for 13 years, Charles "Chuck" Connington has retired.

The 59-year-old Valley Cottage resident joined the department in 1974 as a recreation supervisor and was appointed to superintendent in 1993.

He retired after overseeing numerous projects and renovations to the town park system, which includes ball fields, pools, children's play areas and walking paths.

"He was never complacent," said Clarkstown Supervisor Alexander Gromack, a former department employee. "He always looked for what new programs and facilities were out there that could enhance the menu of opportunities for Clarkstown residents."

Connington said that throughout his tenure as superintendent, his vision for the department was to provide safe and fun activities for people of all ages.

"Wholesome family fun that everyone from the family could enjoy," he said, "from preschoolers to seniors."

Many of Clarkstown's parks boast a variety of activities. Germonds Park, for instance, has a miniature golf course, several ball fields, picnic areas, playgrounds and a pool.

"We really have something for everyone," Connington said.

He has also sought to keep up with recreational trends by adding a skateboarding and inline skating park at Congers Lake Memorial Park and the rock climbing wall at the Pascack Community Center.

Another priority, he said, was to outfit town facilities with state-of-the-art features, such as Lake Nanuet Park's "zero-depth" entry pool, where people can walk into and out of the pool without having to use steps or ladders. The feature is useful for people with disabilities or as a play area for young children.

All three of Clarkstown's pools were renovated during Connington's tenure, the most recent being Lake Nanuet's $6.5 million makeover.

Connington said he was particularly proud of the recently renovated 19th-century Congers train station, near Lake Road and Burnside Avenue. The 3-acre park, dedicated and reopened in September 2005, had marked the completion of the town's downtown revitalization for the hamlet.

"It was the centerpiece," he said of the $3 million project.

Still, he said, there are several projects he had hoped to accomplish. The Street Community Center needs a larger gymnasium and, although not a golfer himself, Connington said he hopes the town will one day acquire a municipal golf course.

But overall, Connington said, he is proud of all Clarkstown has to offer.

"When people are looking to move into Clarkstown, they want to make sure it's a safe community, their children are going to go to really good schools, and, certainly, their leisure time will be filled with safe, wholesome fun," he said. "That's a question that can be very quickly answered once they see our brochure."

Dear Doctor Dans, Merry Christmas. When I read this this morning, I thought you might get a chuckle out of this. If it wasn't so dangerous, then it might be funny. I'd rush the poor soul double quick to an ER for some TPA. It reminded me of leeches and bad humors. Guess I should have went medical and law schools. ;-)  Best wishes, FJohn68

Hi John:

Merry Christmas to you and your family.  I agree with you.  This is nuts.  As you say, the person should be rushed to the ER and, in most cases, they will give TPA unless it’s a situation like Senator Johnson which involves bleeding as from an aneurysm.  It’s a good example of the reams of misinformation (the chaff) that has to be separated from the often excellent information (wheat) on the internet.  An example of the latter can be found in the Brain Attack Coalition TPA Stroke Guidelines.

By the way, in my new book, there’s a picture of the barber shop next to the old Chatham Square station where my Great-Uncle Vito worked.  He specialized in using leeches to remove blood from black eyes.  Leeches are still used occasionally by physicians.

Stay well, keep up the good work, and have a Happy, Healthy New Year!

Peter 57

{JR:  Ahh, so you are carrying on the family legacy.   ;-)   I understood the use of leeches for special situations doe removing dead tissue. Amazing how history got some things right. And, how we are to smart to discard our preconceived notions. And bozos with keyboards can say whatever nonsense comes into their heads. Excluding me of course. I r a Jasper  injineer and thus endowed with superpowers. One being the ability to detect Barbara Streisand at great distances. Having heard so much of it in my years on the earth.  Happy new year to you, yours, and all our fellow Jaspers.}

Oh, you do such a fine job, I hope you continue.

I was just a graduate student - but when I walked on campus I'd imagine my Dad there ('54).  And now I get these as well, I think of my Dad (personally, I think he is a great guy).

Happy New Year to You

Dear Ms. Terri,

I'd quibble with "fine". Personally, I'd be a lot tougher with the grade. Didn't your learn about Perfection, Absolute Good, and Man's Limitations. (Not woman's) Or, did you get easier theology than us injineers. :-)  I slog out this hobby each week hoping that a successor will pop up.

When I walk on campus, it makes me feel old. Like an alien, from a time warp. I'm glad that these modest efforts please you.

And HNY to all our fellow alums as well.

FJ,

I am an engineer, as is my father before me, but they did not offer theology at Cooper Union.

I would have taken it.

We all grade ourselves tougher than others do.  My friend refers to it as 'the inner nun'.

Cheers,
Terri

{JR:  Well, if they did, I'm sure you'd have done better than I did. I got what all barbarians from down the hill got "D". It was funny in recollection how the theology department resented the injineers from the down the hill with their objectivist mindset. My favorite lines were "and how do I measure that", "prove it", "what a load of <expletive deleted>, and the all time favorite "if I can't know anything for sure, then why don't buildings fall down? The tuition bill ain't an illusion!". You can envision the hilarity for weeks after that one. Now I'm not so sure I do know anything. Sigh! }

ZFound (Jaspers Found on Ziggs) http://www.ziggs.com

Ziggs harvested all the public personal pages as a search engine would. Using their free offering, I have identified ~700 possible Jaspers from it. I'm planning to share 10 "found on Ziggs" Jaspers each week in the coming weeks. The first group moves in this week's issue. I don't like to overwhelm the readership with too much of anything. Besides "harvesting" takes a lot of time. And, these folks thought they could hide from Jasper Jottings!

{No time. No volunteers. So I hope to pick it up again when I have some spare time.}

Fonts of Jaspers

Here are sites where "there be Jaspers there". I have no "extra" time to go thru the site, extract the Jaspers, post them in the weekly Jottings, let them know Jasper Jottings exists, and invite them to read it. I have had no volunteers. (Depressing!) So I am logging them here and hope to pick it up again when I have some spare time. I'm listing the sources to hopefully "guilt" someone into helping. Besides while I know that "harvesting" takes a lot of time, these folks thought they could hide from Jasper Jottings!

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

http://stjohns.edu/academics/pr_aca_061120.sju

# Reducing by two-thirds the mortality rate of children under five
# Reducing by three-quarters the ratio of women dying in child birth

Continuing on with the socialist's wish list. Let's rant a little more. Let's stipulate that these are worthwhile objectives. And, they do sound good. "Social Justice" always does; it's just that it's rarely "social" since someone wants to tell someone else what to do and it has very little to do with "justice" in the sense of getting what one deserves. I'd appeal to true charity as a Loving God directs us. But they picked the venue!

How do we measure dying? DO we need a big UN headquarters telling us and compelling us to report? And, who pays for it? You see right away they have to use force to get what they want. Even if it is the best idea in the world, and don't forget the hallmark of a bad idea, is you have to use force to get people to do it, the initiation of force is immoral.

In the spectrum of human wants, where does this fit in? Let's assume that a big expensive hospital will save one child. We've all read the stories where the child from some where get flown to the US and a miracle is performed. I'm thinking of that badly burned girl. When we force the use of scarce resources for that child, how many children do we silently condemn? Since resources used to save the one child, are not available to build say a school where we could potentially enrich lots of children.

Don't get me wrong. I am not for the status quo or doing nothing.

I think that the essence of the problem is government and poverty. The two go hand in hand. So let's make people free to trade with one another unfettered by government diktats, taxes, and force. Let's have charities that focus on these problems, with the caveat that they aren't a slush fund of waste and high salaries like United Way and other "Big Charities". And, let's empower people to make the world a better place.

Love thy neighbor as thyself. (I don't see ANY coercion in that!)

And that’s the last word.
Curmudgeon
