SPECIAL SEASONAL MESSAGE

Thanks to all the readers who make this hobby possible. Thanks MikeMcE who acts as great pair of eyes as a reporter, a great research assistant for Class Years, and one of my key sounding boards on "great ideas". Thanks to the many "reporters" who have written in about themselves and others; without them this would be a lot thinner and very very dry.

When I started, what seems eons ago, I never dreamt how it would grow. I regret not being a better clerk, reporter, or having more time. I wish I could do a better job of follow up and follow thru. Like the story on Brother President, the Hughes Memorial, or interviewing the many interesting Jaspers.

I have no idea how long this will continue. Some weeks with nothing to really publish, I think this might be it. Other weeks, when I'm behind schedule and a lot to publish, I think this might be it. Some weeks, when I successfully connect two Jaspers, I'm on cloud nine. Some weeks, when all I have are obits, I'm in the dumps. Most weeks I just am happy that I have a great hobby.

In this joyous season, regardless of which flavor of winter solstice celebration you favor – and I have to be politically correct with the Druids – and regardless of your political persuasion – I invite you to share my personal prayer … "Donna Nobis Pacem".   Merry, Joyous, and Happy to all Jaspers where ever you are.

Signed,
your CIC

3,000-year-old dam revives farming in Turkish village
by Nicolas Cheviron Wed Dec 13, 12:07 PM ET

{Begin Quote}

ALACAHOYUK, Turkey (AFP) - In this central Turkish village, peasants and archaeologists celebrate a unique achievement -- a 3,246-year-old dam, once buried under mud and slime, is back in service to irrigate farmlands.

{End Quote}

One can take a lot of lessons away from this one: the past holds forgotten wisdom, the hubris of thinking we know it all, or even "who owned the dam". One thing is for sure: people in the past were not stupid, we don't know it all, and who did own the dam that fell into disrepair. A lot of people didn't have clean water for a lot of years because of that dam being forgotten. In and of itself, the dam is illustrative of how we can shoot ourselves in the foot. I don't have any great insight about how to prevent it. But I am trying to think if I have such a blind spot. My fellow alum will have eliminated all their's long ago. Right?

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

James Alan Taravella

James Alan Taravella, 57, of Newburgh, died on December 13, 2006 at St. Luke's-Cornwall Hospital in Newburgh.

Beloved husband and best friend of Rosemarie Taravella, the best father a kid could ever want to Timothy N. and Allison D. Taravella, Jessica F. and Don W. Petree, Jr., and Rebekah Marie Taravella. Cherished grandfather of Zachary Gandolfo and Maximilian Ellsworth Taravella.

He was a very special uncle to Sarah, Christine and Michael Crana. Also surviving are his aunts, Jean Schier, Mary Benafante, Mary Taravella and his father-in-law, Cyril Tansey, Sr. He is also survived by numerous brothers and sisters-in-law, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1949 to the late Adolph and Frances Taravella, his parents and grandparents moved to Vails Gate in 1951.

He attended St. Thomas of Canterbury and Saint Patrick's Schools, where he played baseball and basketball, two lifelong passions. He graduated from Manhattan College with a Bachelors of Arts in English. He received a Masters Degree from Fordham University.

For the past 32 years, he taught thousands of middle school students the joy of reading, writing and poetry. Additionally, he instilled a life-long passion in his family for reading, sports, and the importance of living a full life. He especially loved reading biographies and about civil war history.

"Father English" loved his students almost as much as his family. He started each school year with an overly dramatic reading of the "Tell-Tale Heart."

His quick wit and sense of humor made him a much-sought after master of ceremonies for the retirement parties of his colleagues. He is best remembered for singing "Mack The Knife" at wedding receptions throughout the tristate area.

An avid crossword puzzler, he competed against the clock to finish The New York Times Sunday crossword puzzle.

"Coach T." devoted much of his life to instilling respect, loyalty and sportsmanship in all of his players. These young men were a second family to him and he always took pride in their accomplishments both on the field and off.

Jim and Rea raised three blessed children who cannot begin to fathom a life without him. Always a proud father, he was a constant source of joy, pride and love to Tim, Jessica and Becky. His two grandchildren, Zach and Max were the focus of so much of his pride and love. He was planning to teach them the joys of golf, basketball and baseball.

Known as "Hersti" or "Guido," Jim was a member of Osiris Country Club where he could be found more often than home when his kids tried to find him if the weather was remotely golf-friendly.

Friends and family may call at Coloni Funeral Home, Route 9W South, New Windsor on Sunday, December 17, 2006 from 2-8 p.m., where a funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 18, 2006.

Interment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Middlehope.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Jim Taravella Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o Scott Kendrik, Merrill Lynch, 50 Chestnut Ridge Road, Montvale, NJ 07645.

Arrangements by White and Venuto Funeral Home, 188 North Plank Rd., Newburgh.

He participated in Phi Mu Alpha Symphonia, the international music fraternity, and in numerous bands and musical projects. His pursuits included rock arrangements such as Antony and the Dumonts, barbershop singing in The First Flight Four and original recordings along with cover songs that he enjoyed playing for audiences. His philosophy of life could be heard through his compositions where themes of love, caring and companionship were deeply embedded. Jim also enjoyed a love of literature, extending his talents to write short stories. He spent many hours writing, editing and discussing ideas with peers in an effort to publish his fiction in literary journals. Jim also enjoyed travel, visiting such places as the Caribbean Islands and Greece. He had recently begun to learn Italian in anticipation of a future trip to the country. {extraneous deleted}

Bruce Belcher has been teaching at Edison High School since 1974. He is recognized all over town by current and past students, and still loves to go to work each day. The Huntington Beach Wave sat down with Belcher to talk about his long, and fulfilling career.

Q: How long have you lived in Huntington Beach?

A: I've lived here since 1979. I've been married to my high school sweetheart since 1973. We have two beautiful daughters, Lauren, 25, and Leyna, 23. Lauren is a graduate of Manhattan College in New York, and Leyna just graduated from Chapman University.

John "Jake" and Henry Thielman were one of the few brother combinations to play professional baseball.

All seven sons of Leonard Thielman, a pioneer and the owner of Thielman Hardware Store, were known for their athletic abilities.

However, only Jake and Henry made it to the big leagues. The brothers, born and raised in St. Cloud, first played with local teams.

Jake played with Tacoma and Portland in the Pacific Coast League before breaking into the majors. He pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals, 1905-1906; Cleveland Naps, 1907-08; and Boston Red Sox, 1908.

He also was associated with the Washington Senators, New York Yankees and St. Louis Browns organizations during his career and played with Indianapolis, Louisville and Minneapolis in the American Association.

Jake, who attended Manhattan College, retired from professional baseball after he dislocated his middle finger. However, he played amateur ball for $100 per game.

Henry was an outfielder and pitcher, making his major league debut with the New York Giants on April 17, 1902. He also played for the Cincinnati Reds in 1902 and Brooklyn Superbas in 1903.

He would pitch two more years for the Jersey City Skeeters, a minor league team, before attending dental school.

Henry attended Notre Dame and Manhattan College and served as assistant coach at both. He was a graduate of the dental program at the University of Pennsylvania and was a coach for the school's 1906 baseball team.

He practiced dentistry in New York.

NEW COACHES

Three coaches make their indoor debuts this winter.

Marissa Olivieri, the former Notre Dame Academy and Manhattan College star, is directing the Port Richmond girls. Amanda Chapman, the ex-Tottenville sprinter, is guiding the Petrides boys and girls. Both entered the coaching ranks during the cross country season, and will continue on during the indoor campaign.

'Incredible Desire'
Peters' work ethic makes her a Bear on low post
By IAN BEGLEY

Already committed to Manhattan College, Nadia Peters has led St. Barnabas to a 4-1 start and eyes a CHSAA title.

An afternoon practice doesn't make anything perfect for St. Barnabas senior Nadia Peters. It just isn't long enough.

That's why Peters spends an extra hour practicing each day at Barnabas: to perfect post moves and condition her body for the three-month grind of the CHSAA Bronx/Manhattan Class A league.

"Her work ethic is incredible," said Barnabas coach Greg Viceroy. "That's what sets her apart from other players. She's got an incredible desire to work."

{extraneous deleted}

Peters already achieved a significant goal in October when she committed to play at Manhattan College next fall. Peters has wanted to suit up for the Jaspers since she was in seventh grade and attended a basketball camp at the school's Riverdale campus.

"That was really my first basketball experience," Peters said. "I saw the game and got to interact with the players afterwards. I saw that the players really loved the game, and that's why I started playing."

John,

Hope all is well.  Sad news this is.  I wanted to give you an update on some internal housekeeping.

Stephen Desalvo (2000) is no longer here (he’s now Alumni Director at Iona).  Thomas McCarthy ’06 has taken over his role now and his email address is {privacy invoked} so you might want to change your email address book.

Thanks.

All the best.  Merry Christmas!

Have you talked to Joe Dillon about this?

It’s really his call as alumni director but I would be very happy to sit down with both of you and discuss it.

I am always happy to help and look forward to learning more about Jasper Jottings.

Dear Jasper Joe '49,

Thanks, but it's just grown. While I put time in it, I can say it's been one of my more intelligent undertakings. :-)  Hey, I offered to teach them how to do it ... a decade ago, when they were first dipping their toe in the water and making some mis-steps. But that a lot of water under various bridges. I'll send you an invite to the weekly email. (To prevent spam, I can only invite. You have to accept.)

Interesting that you mention the Prep. I was Prep64. AND, I have a Prep Any Year Yahoo group which I'll send you an invite as well.

 :-)

Yeah, I know, I AM a glutton for punishment.

I have had Jasper Jottings blessed by various people who worked on the Quadrangle's Jasper Jottings column. It seemed like an appropriate name to carry on the tradition. Now if I could just match the excellence.

Personally, and from a Jasper Jottings perspective, I'd like you to tell us everything. Do a data-information-knowledge-wisdom dump. I remember the Engineering shacks, that were decommissioned when I was at the Prep.

We're even trying to get a prep plaque memorial. But you can read all about that in the Prep group.

I really appreciate your response.

{JR:  I am always pleased when I get a Forties Jasper in a conversation. I can't imagine that I'll be able to remember my name at that age based on my current trend. He graduated 2 years after I was born. That's a lot of oral history to be captured. And, each time I report an obit, I say to self, "Self, you should have captured their DIKW before they left. That's what makes the net, personal web pages, and things like Jottings exciting. Long after we are all gone, our bits will be available to our posterity to say "what a bunch of loons"! }

Dear John,

I just perused the most recent "Jottings" and want to respond to your "Special Seasonal Message."  First, thank you for the great job that you do as I can only imagine the time and energy you devote to keeping us informed.  Don't give up the ship!  You've linked me with a couple of buddies over the years for which I'm grateful.  And don't be despondent about the obituaries.  While I won't say I "enjoy" them, they certainly are interesting reading.  Most chronicle the rich, full lives of men (mostly) we aspire to be; fathers, grandfathers, husbands, many of whom served this country and then came home to lead wonderfully productive lives in a wide variety of fields.  Each tells its own important story.  If nothing else, they sometimes make me think about what, if anything will be said when it's my turn.  Best wishes for a, and I love to say this, Merry Christmas!

Bill Horan, Class of 78

{JR:  Thanks for your kind words. It's nice to know that you feel it's valuable. Some weeks I feel like the monk in the old Xerox commercial. "It's a miracle" that anything gets out the wire. :-)   No need to imagine. Jottings takes about 90 minutes a day. If I am real disciplined and do my "daily" chores, otherwise it all stacks to Friday night late and early Saturday morning. But if I was disciplined, I'd have gooten a decent index and been a "rocket scientist", doctor, or lawyer. Instead I'm the Jasper Jottings CIC. The obits make me feel sad, in awe, and conflicted. I also read the Guest Book entries and some of these men are "giants" in impact. I don't now what yours will say, but mine will probably be " a fat old crab who annoyed a lot of his fellow alums with ravings, "news", invitations, and birthday greetings. Good riddance to a spammer." :-)  At least that's what I'd write. Maybe the Dali Lama is right and I'll come back as dog that fights. Thanks again for the good thoughts.}

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

http://www.wltx.com/sports/story.aspx?storyid=45056

Lexington Woman Awakes, Finds Strange Man in Her Bedroom

{Begin Quote}

"I was in my room asleep," said the woman. "My youngest daughter was in her room. My oldest daughter was in my room with me, asleep. Something woke me up and I looked up. I thought it was my oldest daughter at first but when I looked again, it was the wrong size and there was someone standing above my bed."

{End Quote}

While I'm glad she and her family were safe, I regret that she was NOT able to defend herself. She should have had a "varmint elimination" tool at her bedside and detained him. Permanently would have been OK. Now he will be emboldened to try again. And some other citizen will have to endure the problem. I'm against the "death penalty" when applied by the state, but we all have a God-given right (and I don't use that word "right" loosely) to self-defense and to be secure in our homes against perverts. Too bad the political class doesn't trust the people. I do. I think this is a feminist issue. Men are physically stronger. Women shouldn't have to be afraid, travel with a wingman girlfriend (Two women can take one man!), or buy a big dog. (Why do you think people keep big dogs in the city with pooper scoopers?). Sprinkle a few 380s among willing women and we'd have a lot less criminals. And, men would have to be polite around the women folk again! (Women were half the reason we "won the west".) But we all know why the political class doesn't want citizens with guns around! After all they have their reasons, hard to oppress an armed citizenry. Genocide follows disarmament. Look what a few Jews did with 6 guns in the WW2 Warsaw ghetto. An armed person is a citizen; an unarmed one is a slave. Peace comes when we are like the porcupine. Don't get to close with evil intentions, or with any intention uninvited.

And that’s the last word.
Curmudgeon
