SPECIAL SEASONAL MESSAGE

Thanks to all the readers who make this hobby possible. Thanks MikeMcE who acts as great pair of eyes as a reporter, a great research assistant for Class Years, and one of my key sounding boards on "great ideas". Thanks to the many "reporters" who have written in about themselves and others; without them this would be a lot thinner and very very dry.

When I started, what seems eons ago, I never dreamt how it would grow. I regret not being a better clerk, reporter, or having more time. I wish I could do a better job of follow up and follow thru. Like the story on Brother President, the Hughes Memorial, or interviewing the many interesting Jaspers.

I have no idea how long this will continue. Some weeks with nothing to really publish, I think this might be it. Other weeks, when I'm behind schedule and a lot to publish, I think this might be it. Some weeks, when I successfully connect two Jaspers, I'm on cloud nine. Some weeks, when all I have are obits, I'm in the dumps. Most weeks I just am happy that I have a great hobby.

In this joyous season, regardless of which flavor of winter solstice celebration you favor – and I have to be politically correct with the Druids – and regardless of your political persuasion – I invite you to share my personal prayer … "Donna Nobis Pacem".   Merry, Joyous, and Happy to all Jaspers where ever you are.

Signed,
your CIC

LOS ANGELES    Peter Boyle, best known to today's television viewers as Raymond's cranky father on "Everybody Loves Raymond," has died. He was 71.

The actor died Tuesday evening at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He had been suffering from multiple myeloma and heart disease, said his publicist, Jennifer Plante.

Boyle, whose lovably rude exclamation of "Holy Crap!" was his signature line on the hit sitcom, had a long career in Hollywood.

A member of the Christian Brothers religious order who turned to acting, the tall, prematurely balding Boyle gained notice in the title role of the 1970 sleeper hit "Joe," playing an angry, murderous bigot at odds with the emerging hippie youth culture.

{End Quote}

Huh? I didn't know that. There's so much I didn't know, don't know, and can't possibly know.

I find the older I get the more I am "fooled".

An interesting article, one can contemplate what could have been, might have been, should have been.

Life is interesting in that unlike the roulette wheel, there's no seeing all the alternatives. Heck there's not even a chance to conceive of all the possibilities.

I'm sure my fellow alums realized this eons ago and have made great choices. I'm just left to wonder in wonder over wondering.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

Mr. Reinke:

Some good news to add! A future Jasper was born: Caroline Mary Bridges born on December 4, 2006 10:02 pm 6lbs. 1oz. Joins her big sister Grace Bridges and proud parents Brendan and Tara Bridges (1998, 2002)

Thanks!

{JR:  No thank you! That's indeed good news. (Note to Brother President, send tuition bill!)  That makes my day. SO much better than the doing bad news. Only connecting Jasper scores higher on my joy scale. Thanks.}

{JR:  For those that don't specialize in Jasper-cology (the study of Jaspers, their psychology, and psyche), you may not notice the outer body experience taking place here. See we have an interesting use of a maiden name here. A split personality! I'll charge it off to the experience on childbirth and the pain involved. Or, is she carving out a future as a Jasper Jotting reporter. … Nah, with two children, she'll be "carving" out a lot more important things. Maybe in twenty years.  Perhaps this was test to see just how bad a clerk the CIC is? But, I'll play along and index it they way it's reported. ;-)  Maiden names always cause me trouble! }

By Andrea F. Siegel Sun Reporter
December 11, 2006

Walter Eugene Williams Sr., a retired Baltimore hospital administrator, died of Parkinson's disease Friday at the Genesis Eldercare facility in Severna Park. The Annapolis resident was 83.

He played a key role in establishing a burn center at Baltimore City Hospitals (now Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center) and in the development of the Waxter Senior Center.

He was a deputy director of Baltimore City Hospitals from 1962 to 1977 and vice president at Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital from 1977 until his retirement in 1995.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he graduated from the New York State Maritime Academy in 1944 and joined the merchant marine. He served as a first mate on ships during World War II, and he transported troops and supplies home from Japan and Italy at the end of the war.

He then resumed his studies, receiving a bachelor's degree from Manhattan College in 1948 and a master's degree in sanitary engineering from the University of Minnesota in 1950.

He worked for the Naugatuck Rubber Co. in Connecticut, managing plants in the Naugatuck River Valley and Beacon Falls. He left in 1958 to take over his late father's plumbing business in Brooklyn, but quickly decided he did not like the business.

The next year, he took a position as plant engineer for Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, N.J., staying until his 1962 move to Baltimore.

He married Mary Monica Stack Sater in 1972; the couple would have celebrated their 34th anniversary Dec. 9. An earlier marriage ended in divorce.

GWP Edition
Leach finding a new path
BYLINE: Kevin Devaney Jr.
SECTION: SPORTS; Pg. 1C

Your first impression when you hear about Dwayne Leach is that he's a streetball player. He grew up in Harlem, spent three years living and playing on the courts of a residential treatment center, and he was never involved in organized basketball until the age of 15.

The streetball label is nothing new to Leach, who has been trying to shed that and many other misconceptions throughout his entire life.

Every preconceived notion about Pleasantville's star senior is probably untrue. His troubled background, unstable upbringing and lack of basketball education are misleading. Leach is a bright student who is disciplined, well-mannered and goal-oriented.

As for basketball, he proved in Monday's stunning season-opening win at Woodlands that he's hardly got bad playground habits.

"I grew up playing basketball outside on the streets," Leach said. "But I'm not a streetball player."

In Monday's 55-54 win over a much stronger Woodlands team, Leach was sensational. He scored 15 first-half points, hitting six of his first seven shots, and finished with 19 points, four assists and four steals. Before fouling out, Leach displayed amazing vision and awareness, and distributed the ball with marked precision.

Leach has fought hard over the last 12 months to overcome the idea that he could not show those skills on a basketball court, and every other stereotype that could be cast upon him.

A first-year transfer from the Mount Pleasant Cottage School in Pleasantville, Leach feared how a black kid from Harlem would be accepted in a predominantly white community and on a team of players who for the most part grew up together.

When he first joined the team in the Westchester Elite Summer League, he couldn't help but be defensive.

"I figured they didn't want me here," said Leach, a 6-foot, left-handed shooting guard. "I thought they'd be like, 'Who is this guy? Where's he from? Why is he here?' Just the typical stereotype stuff. But from the first day, I was surprised. They weren't like that at all."

Acceptance became easy for the quick-witted Leach, who fit right in with coach Bob Delle Bovi and the Panthers' players.

But while Leach is playing organized basketball for the first time in his life, up to this point his life would hardly be considered organized.

When he was 13, the Administration for Children's Services (ACS) removed him from his Harlem home and placed him at the Cottage School, where he spent two years. Since the school didn't offer a varsity team, Leach played junior varsity, where on most nights he scored more than 30 points and the team finished 14-2.

After his sophomore year, Leach was discharged from the Cottage School and sent back home to Harlem. ACS, though, again intervened and placed him back at the Cottage School last fall. It was then he was offered an alternative.

"They told me if I got good grades and did what I had to do, I could live there and go to Pleasantville," said Leach, who said he's maintained an 82 average throughout high school. "The Cottage School didn't have a lot to offer me academically, so I did what I had to do and got here."

Leach is enrolled in Pleasantville's Alternative Education Program, directed by Delle Bovi.

Delle Bovi met Leach two summers ago at the coach's basketball camp. Leach stopped by one afternoon to watch his little brother, Ja-Von Davis, run through drills and was shooting around when he started chatting with Delle Bovi.

"I've been around enough basketball to know talent," said Delle Bovi, a former men's coach at Manhattan College. "You could just see the rotation on his shot and the way he was jumping, that the kid could play."

What stood out most about Leach in Monday's season opener was his commanding court presence. If he's provided one intangible to the Panthers, it's an undeniable swagger - a sense of invincibility.

"We knew how good Woodlands was and that they returned a lot. But all day at school, (Leach) kept telling us we weren't going to lose," Pleasantville senior Kevin Nugent said. "Just him saying that over and over made us realize what was possible. He definitely gave us confidence."

Leach's plan is to finish out the year and either enroll next fall at a prep school or a junior college. With his skill and upside, Delle Bovi believes Leach is a definite college prospect.

"This is how I'm going to get out and have a better life for myself," Leach said. "Basketball and an education are my way out."

THEY WERE HANDING OUT bandanas as fans entered Rose Hill Gym last night before Fordham and Manhattan met in the 99th edition of the Battle of the Bronx.

But thanks to freshman guard Brenton Butler, those bandanas didn't have to double as crying towels for the Rams.

"He played terrific," coach Dereck Whittenburg said after his Rams beat the Jaspers, 70-66, last night, ending a five-game losing streak to Manhattan in the series that dates back to the 1911-12 season. "He showed a lot of confidence out there. He stepped up and made some outstanding plays."

Perhaps none was bigger than his floater on the baseline with 11:12 to play that kick-started a 19-8 spurt and turned a 41-37 Manhattan lead into a 56-49 Fordham bulge.

"I just came in off the bench trying to play aggressive," said Butler, who finished with a game-high 18 points, earning him the Mike Cohen Award as the game's Most Valuable Player. "I knew as long as I played aggressive, offensively and defensively, that we'd come out with the 'W.' "

Fordham (3-2) was having its hands full with the young, scrappy Jaspers, who started two freshmen and who have seven first-year players on their roster. The Rams, who led just 30-28 at intermission, fell behind by as many as five points on several occasions in the second half, the last coming when Darryl Crawford put Manhattan up 41-36 on a layup with 13:08 to play.

But veteran Fordham, which started five juniors, finally began to make its move.

After the floater by Butler, the 6-2 guard followed with a three-pointer, and the Rams were off and running. Michael Binns, who matched his career high with 16 points, drilled his second trey of the game, Sebastian Greene chipped in six points in the spurt and Fordham was finally able to shake the Jaspers.

Fordham finished with five players in double figures, while Manhattan (2-4) was led by Guy Ngarndi's 16 points and 14 from Arturo Dubois.

Play got a little chippy at times, with referees having to step in to restore order. But that was par for the course, according to Fordham's Marcus Stout.

"It's always physical between Fordham and Manhattan," Stout said. "That's why it's the Battle of the Bronx."

And for the first time in Stout's career, he and the Rams finally came out on top.

"We've never beaten them since I've been here." Stout said. "It was a big game for us. We're the veteran team this year. We knew it was our turn to get a win."

Hi John!  Hope your winter is shaping up so far!  The newsletter as always is great and appreciated. :)

You wrote, "Trip to the Italian Riviera sponsored by MC (at least according to the snazzy broucher I was mailed). Book by 10/17 and save $200! 800-323-7373. Sigh!"

Now if only it was "Book by 10/17 and it's *only* $200."    LOL!!!

I've been busier 'n a bee the last few months with the smoking ban votes on the election ballots and with fighting bans here in Philly and in Atlantic City.   Idiot tobacco companies got involved in the election fights but then didn't put enough money into them to overcome the taint of their involvement in the first place so we lost all three states.  Philly had a loss because I couldn't motivate the bar owners who fell either into the Ostrich "It'll never happen HERE!" camp or the Borg "Resistance Is Futile!" camp, but we salvaged a bit with an amendment allowing it in most neighborhood bars. Atlantic City Casino folks are a combination of all the above problems with the addition of hubris, "Oh, We're too BIG for them to touch us!"  Heh... unfortunately I think they're going to get their butts handed to them before the month is out and as of this weekend it is now too late for me to have any confidence in saving them.  Ahhh wellll...

On a personal level all is going fine with just the normal day to day leakyroof / drippyplumbing / sparkyelectrical problems.  :>   Well, also an infestation of squirrels but for the moment they're staying in one area between the floors so they're mainly providing excitement for the cat when he hears them skittering around!  LOL!

OK!  Just wanted to say hi to thee!  Keep well and keep the newsletters coming!!

Dear Mr. Mauriello,

Welcome to jasper land.

I see from Stephen DeSalvo's OOO message that he's no longer working at the College. (Yet he's still listed on the site and the point of contact for the alumni online database. Guess someone has to fix that?)

Sorry to be the bearer of more "chores", but I have been "feeding" my alumni news into him in order to get the database updated and any other use he could make of it. Do you want it? Send it to some one else? Or just forget it?

I also produce an unofficial Jasper news ezine called Jasper Jottings, which you are of course welcome to. Just send an email message to Distribute_Jasper_Jottings-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. If you don't want it on your official Manhattan email address, (as many people at the College don't want), just send it from whatever account you want to use and mention who you are in the text. Or you can read it anonymously at http://www.jasperjottings.com if you'd prefer.

Yell if I can help you in any way,

Dear fellow Jaspers, who are identified as regional Jasper contacts,

Seasonal greetings.

Just in case you didn't know or forgot, I publish the unofficial Jasper Jottings weekly ezine.

Take a peek at http://www.jasperjottings.com, see the many years of "stuff" I've produced, and know I do share my findings with the Alumni office at the College. (Too bad, they see me as a competitor making their lives harder. I really don't mean it that way. If they'd produce the weekly news, I'd be happy to do something else.)

I have about 1,500 of our fellow alums as readers.

Please drop me a note on your Jasper-related plans, and I'll include them in the calendar in every issue. Give me as much lead time as you can. And, I'll carry it until the week of your activity.

Dona nobis pacem,

Barnard Hughes Memorial Set for December 12 at Walter Kerr
By: Brian Scott Lipton

Barnard Hughes

A memorial service for Tony Award-winning actor Barnard Hughes will be held on Tuesday, December 12 at 2pm at the Walter Kerr Theatre (219 West 48th Street). Hughes died at the age of 90 on July 11 at New York Presbyterian Hospital after a brief illness. There will be a limited number of seats made available to the general public for the memorial, and seating will take place on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the memorial.

Sam Waterston, Brian Dennehy, Jefferson Mays, Elizabeth Wilson, Lauren Bacall, Alec Baldwin, Bernard Gersten, Joe Dowling, Melvin Bernhardt, Lynne Meadow and Hughes' son, director Doug Hughes, are all expected to speak. Christine Ebersole, James Naughton, and pianist Paul Sullivan will be performing at the memorial.

Hughes' career began in 1934 with one line in the Shakespeare Fellowship Repertory Company production of The Taming of the Shrew; it would eventually span seven decades and more than 400 roles on Broadway, in television, and in films. He received great praise for his work as a curmudgeonly father haunting the memory of his playwright son in Hugh Leonard's 1978 Tony Award-winning play Da. He won a Tony and a Drama Desk Award for his performance, and he recreated his role in the 1988 film version. In 1973, he received a Tony nomination for his performance as Dogberry in the New York Shakespeare Festival production of Much Ado About Nothing.

Hughes gave his last Broadway performance in 2000 at age 85, appearing with his wife in Noël Coward's Waiting in the Wings. That year, he and Stenborg received a Drama Desk Award for Lifetime Achievement. In 1995, Hughes was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame at the Gershwin Theatre.

Among his many film credits are Hamlet, Midnight Cowboy, The Hospital, and Cradle Will Rock. He starred in the TV series Doc, Mr. Merlin, and The Cavanaughs (with Ebersole), and he had a recurring role on Blossom. In 1977, he won an Emmy Award for his guest spot on Lou Grant.

Scatterbomb needs a coach for the Spring Semester.

I am unable to continue coaching Manhattan College's improv troupe Scatterbomb and am helping them find a replacement coach for Spring 2007.

This is a bit of a situation, so here are the details...

    * You'd really have to be available once a week, every week, from about 7:30-10:30. They probably won't know which day they'll have rehearsal until the semester starts. You can't really miss rehearsals, seriously, but if you do you'd either have to find a sub (and pay him out of your own pocket - see below) or hope they can make up a different week.

    * Manhattan College is on 242nd Street, the final stop on the 1 (it's a pretty safe area). It takes me about 1.5 hours to get home in the LES. So the commute is a bit of a pain and can be difficult if you live in Queens.

    * You'll be working with a mix of veterans and people who've only been doing it for one semester, so it's also a fun teaching challenge.

    * Because of these factors, the pay is more than the standard coaching rate. You'll probably be paid monthly, and will have to fill out tax forms, as you'll receive a check from the school.

You've really gotta be reliable and committed to this gig through the entire semester. These are a great group of people, and I want them to have the best coach possible.

If you think you have the guts, please email me at professorkirkus -at- yahoo -dot- com, and I'll toss your name into the ring for consideration.

The sadness of an empty guest book?

In following up an entry, I noticed that this "guest book" had only the CIC's entry.

I know our CIC sent out an " ACTIONABLE OBIT: EXPIRES 16NOV06 Fairfield, CT MC???? Murray, John Thomas", which while a terrible name, tried to rally some alumni interest.

So no one even knew the 80 year old alumni's class year?

Here's a vet with a body of work we know nothing about and who silently leaves with all his (as the CIC says) data, information, knowledge, and wisdom that we never captured.

No one knew enough or cared enough, other than the CIC, to put anything in this book. Maybe it is best if it goes away on the 14th. At least it will not haunt his loved ones, or us, with our collective failings.

Sigh. It's depressing.

And that’s the last word.
