Re:Consequence free by the Irish Folk band Great Big Sea

I was listening to the Irish Folk music channel. (Hey it gets noisy at work and it helps me focus!) I have to laugh at the line about being "consequence free". Only a young person would imagine that life would allow that. Like, you can have it all! No, you get to make choices and those choices have consequences. Some choices are consequence free. MacDonalds has better fries. More serious, are the career choices. Chose to be an injineer and you are condemned to a rational life. Chose to be Arts guy and you get to debate endlessly how many angles are on that pin. Mutually exclusive. The other problem that we humans have is that you only go around once. No "do over". No finsey. No "oops". Life's not a roulette wheel where you get to bet over and over again. No, us humans are creatures in time with only consequences. Now my more learned fellow alums in the Arts might say we learned that back at MC in one of the ology courses. And, my more learned fellow engineering alums might say we learned that back at MC in the E+MC classes. To wit I reply, I played a lot of bridge and must have skipped that class. I think I was better off fat, dumb, and happy. Enlightenment brings its own consequences. Let's sing along.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

Manhattan College To Host Peace And Justice Studies Association Conference

PJSA dedicated to exploring alternatives to violence

Organization promotes piece within universities, colleges and K-12 grade levels

RIVERDALE, N.Y.Manhattan College will host the Peace and Justice Studies Association’s 2006 conference from October 5-8.  The conference will bring together educators, students, activists and other peace practitioners in an attempt to explore alternatives to violence and share visions and strategies for social justice and social change.

Founded in 2001, the Peace and Justice Studies Association (PJSA) is a national organization of scholars, college faculty, students, activists and K-12 teachers interested in issues of peace and justice.  More than 300 people are expected to attend the four-day event, which has the theme “Who Speaks for the Common Good?”

The PJSA is a non-profit organization that was formed as the result of a merger between the Consortium of Peace Research, Education and Development (COPRED), and the Peace Studies Association (PSA).  Both organizations provided leadership in the broadly defined field of peace, conflict and justice studies.

“It seems a fitting time for Manhattan College to host the PJSA conference.  Manhattan College is one of the oldest peace studies programs in the country and offered its first peace studies course, Anatomy of Peace, 40 years ago,” said Margaret Groarke, assistant professor of government at Manhattan College and co-chair of the conference.

For more information about the conference, please contact Professor Groarke, at (718) 862-7943. More information about the Peace and Justice Studies Association can be found at www.peacejusticestudies.org.

The PJSA is dedicated to bringing together academics and grassroots activists to share visions and strategies for peacebuilding.  It also serves as a professional association for scholars in the field of peace and conflict studies.  The organization works to create a peaceful world through the promotion of peace studies within academic environments.

Highlights of this year’s conference include:

    * The Opening Plenary: “The Role of Religion in Seeking the Common Good,” featuring an interfaith panel of speakers.

    * Dr. Frances Fox Piven will speak about her forthcoming book, “Challenging Authority: How Ordinary People Change America.”

    * The screening of an excerpt from “Marines Go Home,” the story of United States helicopter bases in Okinawa Japan, will be followed by a discussion with the filmmakers and Betty Reardon, founder of the Peace Education Center at Teachers College, Columbia University

    * A panel on “Education for Common Good,” highlighting the importance of education and the education process in working toward common good.

If you are a member of the press and wish to cover the conference, please call Scott Silversten at (718) 862-7232 {privacy invoked}.

Manhattan College is located at West 242nd Street near Broadway in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, one mile from the Westchester County line and accessible by MTA subway line 1.

Founded in 1853, Manhattan College is an independent, Catholic, coeducational institution of higher learning offering more than 40 major programs of undergraduate study in the areas of arts, business, education, engineering and science, along with graduate programs in education and engineering.  For more information about Manhattan College, visit www.manhattan.edu.

Joe,

I am very sorry for your loss, your family's loss, and what all the entire Jasper community has lost. Another Jasper.

I'm just an injineer and not good at expressing condolences. What I try to be good at is actions. So, to that end, I have: shipped out an "actionable obit" on the Manhattan College Alumni Yahoo group, notified Ms. Grace at the Alumni Office to add her name to the memorial roll (that will get a whole lot of people praying for her soul), put her on my All Souls prayer card, and put the Obit in next week's Jasper Jottings. Have to review my checklist to see if I missed any possibilities to "action" this sad item. Nope, I think that is all I can do.

Like the song "rainy days and Mondays", obits, while a fact of life, always get me down. It's hard to get the wake up call that everyone's time is limited. So, I'll get busy trying to do something meaningful in her memory. An extra act of charity. A prayer with my afternoon (dietetic "I'm gonna be thin some day!) tea. Kind thoughts in your direction.

I would have like to have learned from your cousin, she seemed to have a lot of interesting experiences. After all, there is so little one can really "do" in these times. Be like Dylan Thomas, and rage at the "dying of the light". Why do I always think of Rodney Dangerfield recitation of this poem?

Nah, I'll go nag some Jasper about Jasper Jottings. And, try to capture their stories, before their light flickers out.

Sadly, just an injineer, but thankful for the email,
Fjohn68

Do not go gentle into that good night,
 Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless, me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

OTB'S KENNY FILA DEAD AT 62 - SPA SHOWDOWN WINNER VICTIM OF HIT-AND-RUN
BYLINE: FOUNTAINE
SECTION: All Editions; Pg. 58

Kenny Filacchione - known to Post readers as "Kenny Fila," who won two of the past three annual "Saratoga Showdowns" as the handicapper for New York City OTB - was killed Saturday night outside Montefiore Hospital in The Bronx after being struck in succession by two hit-and-run drivers traveling eastbound on Gun Hill Road. He was 62.

Employed as a security guard for Manhattan College, Mr. Filacchione, a Bronx native, was a longtime racing fan who performed a variety of handicapping services as a freelancer for OTB.

He was at Belmont Park on Saturday with Ron Ceisler, senior vice president for marketing at OTB, when he re-ceived a phone call that his mother had been taken to the emergency room at Montefiore.

While visiting her, he crossed the street outside the hospital to get a cup of coffee when the hit and run occurred.

"I've lost a friend, an ally, someone who certainly brightened up my life," said Ceisler, who knew Kenny for 20 years after meeting him at Yonkers. "Horseracing was his life. He was a fixture, a Damon Runyon character, and a really good guy." Mr. Filacchione and his wife, Laura, recently celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary. He is sur-vived by two sons.

Mrs. Filacchione said that, according to an eyewitness, the cars that struck him might have been towncar livery cabs, but the NYPD said it has no firm description of the vehicles. Montefiore, however, has video-surveillance cameras that could provide clues for the on-going investigation.

Anyone with information should call Crimestoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.

Author does things the old-fashioned way

2006/9

By LARRY McSHANE, Associated Press Writer Fri Sep 29, 3:53 PM ET

NEW YORK - After spending a decade writing his first novel, author Peter Quinn hoped to speed up the process on its follow-up.

In longhand.

Page after page of penmanship, honed across year after year of Catholic education.

Quinn‘s first book, "Banished Children of Eve," was set in Civil War-era New York, detailing the ethnic and racial tensions surrounding the city‘s "Draft Riots." For its follow-up, he set private eye Fintan Dunne investigating a homicide — and subsequently the Nazis — in 1930s New York.

"Hour of the Cat" is almost two novels: a detective tale with Dunne running between Brooklyn and the Bronx, and a parallel piece played out in Hitler‘s Berlin. No surprise there, as Quinn majored in history at Manhattan College, received his masters in history at Fordham University and along the way became a devoted student of New York‘s past.

Quinn, the son of a Bronx judge, sports a salt-and-pepper mustache beneath a balding pate. His enthusiasm for the city‘s history is evident in his voice; it was evident to Martin Scorsese , too, who used him as an adviser on the film "Gangs of New York."

"New York was about to become the global capital," Quinn said of that era. "The city in ‘38, at the tail end of the Depression, was about to become something else. So I wanted to look at that scene."

"I said to myself,

What if, instead of a single murder, what if he stumbled into the biggest murder plot in history?‘" Quinn said. "And then I said,

I really can‘t write this without the other plot, which was taking place in Germany.‘ So it took eight years."

Until his recent retirement, Quinn spent more than two decades as corporate editorial director for Time Warner — a job that followed a stint as speechwriter for New York governors Hugh Carey and Mario Cuomo.

"He was so much better than people who were reading his speeches — including me — that it had to be difficult for him," Cuomo said. "He‘s one of the most gifted writers I‘ve ever met, and I‘ve met a lot of them."

"Hour of the Cat" — the title refers to the German officers plotting a coup against Adolf Hitler — boasted some big-name boosters: Pulitzer Prize winners Frank McCourt and William Kennedy, and veteran New York writer Pete Hamill heaped praise on the book.

"A thriller on the highest level, with the best of good guys and the most thuggish of bad guys," read McCourt‘s rave.

The kind words were nice, although Quinn said that was never his motivation in putting pen to paper.

"In the end, if you‘re going to write, you‘ve got to write for yourself," he said. "If you‘re writing for the reward, you might not get it."

Quinn, while writing his two novels, rose weekdays at 5:30 a.m. and worked for two hours before heading into his Manhattan day job. It‘s hard to argue with the results, or his reasoning.

"It was just the knowledge that as hard as it was to get up at 5:30 a.m., living with the fact of not having written was harder," Quinn said.

"Hour of the Cat" was released in paperback in August, and his publisher was so pleased there‘s already talk of a sequel following Dunne through World War II and beyond. Another book is due out next year: "Looking for Jimmy: A Search for Irish America," a mix of older and unpublished pieces.

Quinn said moving between speechwriting and fiction was never a problem during his twin careers.

"Don‘t forget," he said, "I was a speechwriter for politicians."

Patrick J. Mullany:
Why The Desert Sun should endorse me for Indian Wells City Council
The Desert Sun
September 29, 2006

I ask for your support for the Indian Wells City Council because of my strong background, educational credentials, civic experience, full time availability, and his grasp of the issues facing the city.

I'm married to Patricia, my wife for 40 years. We have five children and 10 grandchildren. We've lived in Indian Wells since 1998. I'm a registered Republican.

I received my early education in New York and a bachelor's degree from Catholic University, Washington, D.C., in 1958. I was awarded a master's degree in counseling psychology from Manhattan College, New York, in 1965. I graduated from the highest-level government school, Senior Seminar-U.S. Department of State, Washington, D.C, in 1982. I currently am a consultant in crisis management matters.

My career in the FBI was distinguished for managing two of the largest offices within the Federal Bureau of Investigation. I was an internationally recognized terrorism expert and served on the State Department's Committee to Combat Terrorism in the early 1980s. In the years following my FBI career, I served as director of security for two major corporations, First Interstate Bank and Occidental Petroleum. I presently am a consultant for hostage/ kidnap situations, emergency disaster preparedness, workplace violence, earthquake preparedness and executive kidnapping.

In 1997, I was elected national president of the Society of Former FBI Agents (8,000 members).

Since arriving in Indian Wells, I have been active in my homeowners association, where I am currently vice president. I served for 2 years as the chairman for the HOAs of the City of Indian Wells. I currently am a member of the Architecture & Landscape Committee for Indian Wells. I have kept abreast with the issues facing Indian Wells by attending City Council meetings.

I am highly regarded within the city of Indian Wells.

I was narrowly defeated in November 2005 by Larry Spicer by the slim margin of 44 votes.

I am committed to the future of Indian Wells and am best qualified to work with the current City Council. I will bring a full-time commitment to the council.

Spanish-Speaking Bicultural Students Pursuing Careers in Health Care Win $200,000 in Scholarships From the United Health Foundation and PacifiCare Foundation

* Seventy-Five Students Receive $2,000 Scholarship to Pursue Careers in  Health Care

* Two $25,000 Freedom Award Scholarships Given to the Two Most Outstanding Applicants

* Scholarship Program Addresses Nationwide Shortage of Spanish-Speaking Health Care Professionals

* Hispanic Heritage Month Sept. 15-Oct. 15

CYPRESS, Calif., Oct. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Seventy-seven Spanish-speaking bicultural students were each awarded scholarships by the United Health Foundation and PacifiCare Foundation to pursue educational opportunities leading to careers in the health care industry.

The scholarships are offered on behalf of the Latino Health Scholars Program to educate students about career opportunities for Hispanics and Latinos in the health care field. In order to qualify for a scholarship, applicants were required to show proof of acceptance and enrollment into an approved health care program at a university, community college or accredited technical college.

According to the Office of Minority Health, there is a nationwide shortage of bilingual and bicultural professionals in the health care field. Specifically, the shortage of Spanish-speaking personnel in nursing and other allied health professions, coupled with the growth of the Latino population in the United States, requires training and recruitment of an ever-greater number of qualified professionals.

"Nationwide, many Latinos do not have access to culturally and linguistically appropriate care, and this has a far-reaching effect on their health and quality of life," said Russell Bennett, vice president of Latino Health Solutions at UnitedHealthcare. "Studies show that patients respond better when care instructions are delivered in their own language and their cultural background is taken into account. The academic excellence and passion for helping others exemplified by this year's scholarship winners we feel will make a tremendous impact in serving the health care needs of Latinos."

Seventy-five students across the country as well as from Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic were each awarded $2,000 scholarships. In addition, Hilda Cerritos of North Hollywood, Calif., and Natalia Rojas of Arlington, Texas, each received a $25,000 Freedom Award.

The Freedom Award, established last year, is a $50,000 grant given annually in honor of individuals and organizations that, according to Bennett, "have demonstrated tremendous sacrifice and commitment to make a positive difference in our communities."

This year, the Freedom Award winners were selected by a panel of renowned professionals from the health care, educational and publishing fields including: Elena Rios, M.D., president and CEO of The National Hispanic Medical Association and The National Hispanic Health Foundation; Dr. Leobardo Estrada, member of the AARP board of directors; Lupita Colmenero, president of the National Association of Hispanic Publishers and publisher of El Hispano News; Robert Bard, president and CEO of LATINA Style Magazine; Adela Gonzalez, Ph.D., MPA, vice president of Strategic & Institutional Affairs at the University of North Texas Health Science Center; Britt Rios-Ellis, Ph.D., director of the Center for Latino Community Health, Evaluation and Leadership Training at California State University, Long Beach; Xochitl Castaneda, director of the California Mexico Health Initiative, California Policy Research Center at the University of California Office of the President; and Lissette Freire, director, Multicultural Product Management, Ovations.

"On behalf of all my colleagues on the Freedom Award selection panel, we were very impressed by the caliber and maturity of all the applicants," said Dr. Elena Rios. "As we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we feel gratified that we have made a positive difference in the lives of these deserving youths who are beginning their journey toward realizing their academic and professional aspirations."

Since the Latino Health Scholars Program was launched in 2003, more than $550,000 in scholarships has been awarded to deserving students. More information about this year's Latino Health Scholars program is available at http://www.uhclatino.com.

The Post-Standard (Syracuse, New York)
October 1, 2006 Sunday
FINAL EDITION
HOW ONE MAN WITH A WEB SITE IN OREGON EXPOSED HAZ-ING AT DOZENS OF NCAA SCHOOLS;
HIS CLAIM SPARK PROBES AT CORTLAND, ITHACA AND OSWEGO
BYLINE: by Rebecca James staff writer
SECTION: NEWS; Pg. A1

If student athletes get drunk and hold initiation parties in Central New York, will people 2,800 miles away have something to say about it?

In this digitally connected world of online photo albums and blogs, count on it.

William Schut, a 37-year-old in Portland, Ore., started a blog four months ago that has identified photos of students from 40 colleges, including 12 in New York, that he says depict hazing.

Schut, while sarcastic and brash, has gotten results with his blog: www.NCAAhazing.com/. Ask Hank Nuwer, an assistant professor at Franklin College in Indiana who has written four books on hazing.

"His rants have exposed more sports teams and their hazing since May than my reasonable, reasoned arguments and solid journalism have exposed in the last 10 years," Nuwer said.

Last month, the State University of New York at Cortland imposed sanctions against two varsity teams and Man-hattan College canceled its women's lacrosse fall season. The State University of New York at Oswego and Ithaca Col-lege are in the midst of investigations.

"His site sure does point out the ability of a blog today to raise hell and to effect changes," Nuwer said. "Years ago he would have been reduced to writing letters to newspapers that certainly would have fallen short of the influence he's had today."

On Sept. 14, Schut took aim at Ithaca College:

In anticipation of the derivative, tired correspondence we'll undoubtedly receive from both media and some in the Ithaca community, read on, simpleton:

The Ithaca College Policy Manual defines hazing as: subjecting a person to treatment intended to put him/her in a humiliating or disconcerting position, is prohibited, and is cause for disciplinary action.

It is not up for debate. Rules are rules, capeesh? Your opinion regarding the definitions of hazing does not matter. This was an initiation.

So who is William Schut and why does he care what students are doing thousands of miles away?

Schut said he is a private businessman who is about to launch a nonprofit organization that will serve as an NCAA watchdog. He would not name the organization.

"We're a bunch of people working in college athletics or involved in athletics that want changes," Schut said.

Schut worked for a year at the State University at Albany as an assistant athletic director, beginning in 2002, and had previously worked as an academic adviser to student athletes at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas.

Schut was not known for a sharp tongue at UNLV, said Jerry Koloskie, senior associate athletic director.

"He seemed to be more reserved and a quiet guy, not outspoken about much of anything," Koloskie said. "He's well studied with a very good professional demeanor. I could see him being the kind of guy who would do very well in pres-entations."

Schut started his blog May 23, insisting that the NCAA doesn't care about hazing and naming 30 schools that he deemed the "dirty 30." Among them were six SUNY schools including Cortland, Oswego and Schut's former employer, Albany.

Many of the photos Schut found were on online photo albums sites, such as www.webshots.com Those photos, among millions of others, would have likely remained under the radar, except students added captions such as "rookie night" and "initiation" and included the name of their college and sports team.

"It takes five minutes to get on the Internet and find them," Schut said.

Ordinarily, college administrators say they don't devote time to browsing online photos to catch their students up to no good.

"We don't go looking for this," SUNY Cortland President Erik Bitterbaum said. "It came to our attention because of this one gentleman who takes it on as a life mission."

Schut did not hesitate to make demands of Cortland administrators. On Aug. 9, he complained that the school had taken two months to investigate:

We will continue to systematically post Cortland hazing photos until either NCAAHazing.com is contacted by the appropriate administrator, or we are satisfied with the consequences of your investigation. Well, we did speak with the university president today and were informed that the investigation is moving along. Umm, Ok. Whatever. Whomever is in charge of this investigation, give us a call. You have our number.

Typical shots on Schut's Web site include students dressing up in silly outfits, writing vulgar words on each other's bodies and drinking shots of liquor out of each other's belly buttons.

Most would not fall under the state law that defines hazing as involving substantial risk of physical harm.

However, colleges often define hazing as requiring illegal alcohol or drug use, the forced consumption of food or drink or, as Cortland's athletic code puts it, "requiring new members to perform public stunts of buffoonery."

So far, local colleges' responses to Schut include:

SUNY Cortland announced Sept. 11 it had disciplined its varsity women's lacrosse and women's softball teams and three recreational sports clubs - women's softball, women's rugby and women's lacrosse - for hazing violations. The women's lacrosse and women's softball teams will have some games cut from their regular seasons. Other sanctions included probation and community service.

Fourteen recreational sports clubs were put on probation because of alcohol violations.

Oswego State is investigating about 15 students and is holding hazing awareness workshops for all its athletes. The probe includes men's basketball and wrestling.

"We want to eliminate some of the myths that students have about hazing," said James Scharfenberger, dean of stu-dent affairs. "Hazing isn't just an issue of forcing someone to do something. We're trying to indicate that it's much more than that."

At Ithaca College, Brian McAree, vice president for student affairs and campus life, said the college found out about the photos Sept. 12 and has since determined that they were from a party held about two years ago. The college is investigating wrestling and women's gymnastics, men's basketball and women's basketball.

McAree said the school has started investigating students whom coaches helped identify and will take action if vio-lations are found.

Schut said he will shut down his Web site if the NCAA takes action against hazing.

Anti-hazing consultant Rick Farnham said he thinks Schut is wrong and the NCAA already works to prevent haz-ing.

Farnham is the former athletic director at the University of Vermont, which canceled most of its 1999-2000 hockey season after a hazing incident.

The problem is that hazing is ingrained in the culture, he said.

"We see students coming in from high school, junior high and youth groups with a background in this kind of be-havior," Farnham said.

Possible hazing in New York

These schools in New York schools, including three area ones, are identified on the Web site NCAAHazing.com for online photos that blogger William Schut says depict hazing:

Columbia University, New York City.
Hofstra University, Hempstead.
Ithaca College, Ithaca.
Manhattan College, New York City.
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy.
Rochester Institute of Technology, Rochester.
State University at Albany.
State University College at Cortland.
State University College at Fredonia.
State University College at Geneseo.
State University College at Oneonta.
State University College at Oswego.

Ithaca: The school is investigating students at a party that was held about two years ago.

Cortland (State University at New York College at Cortland) Two varsity teams and three recreational sports clubs are disciplined for hazing violations.

Oswego (State University of New York) About 15 students are being investigated and the college is holding hazing awareness workshops.

Dear Ms. Kelly,

Please don't think too unkindly about me; you have to be aware that there are a lot a lot of bad folks out there.

Here's what Yahoo reported to me:

Otherwise, I just usually rubber stamp the application and move on. Since it is possible to steal email addresses, insert spam, and otherwise destroy the community, I'm fussy. Some Yahoo Groups have been literally destroyed by bad people doing such and worse. That's why most Yahoo Groups are run as by invitation only.

It's amusing because Jasper Jottings is world wide web readable at http://www.jasperjottings.com. All getting into the group does for you is to receive it in your email on a weekly basis. :-)

Based on your paternity to a Jasper Dad and a Jasper Uncle, I'd be please to approve your admission. (It really is NOT that exclusive.)

Now, what can you tell us about your Dad and Uncle? We'd, I'd, most interested in a biography of both men.

Hi John,

I really should apologize and explain. I was home with the flu last week and was watching Court TV. They are profiling this horrible murder, Nelson Serrano. In one short piece they said two of the victims went to Manhattan College. I googled their names and your newsletter carried a story about it, which is how I saw your link.

I did include my dad's name and class ... but it must not have taken. But I certainly do understand the need to check out who is writing. I am a newspaper reporter and I appreciate the " darker element out there."

Anyway I appreciate being an honorary Jasper by association. A sort of Jasperette!.

I see that you graduated in 1968. I went to Elizabeth Seton College in 1969.

My dad and uncle both died in the 70's. My dad had a long career in Manhattan with RH Donnely and had a good life. Raised three daughters on the north shore of LI.

I have his Manhattan College yearbook from 1936. And it is a hoot. We bring it out at family gatherings and we just laugh so much. It has a section on the "perfect Manhattan girl" as well as the favorite section, best actress, best movie of 1936, ect.

{JR:  Well we are glad to have anyone who thinks kindly of MC and grouchy fat old Jaspers. I'm sure that the "perfect Manhattan girl" hasn't changed … MUCH! We have lots of them on campus now that it's co-ed. There a shock to the old system. And, there are no "girls" there, just "womyn". Or so I have been told by one of the female Jasper bloggers! ;-)  Enjoy. And tell us more about Dad and Uncle.  }

Brother David will discuss the basics of financial planning, financial aid, loans, and scholarships. The presentation also includes a line-by-line run-through of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) which is particularly useful to senior parents.

This is an instructive program for the parents of sophomores and juniors who would like to plan ahead, and for senior parents who will be filling application forms soon. Senior parents may want to bring their 2005 Income Tax Forms and their copy of the College Handbook as reference. College Handbooks, English, Chinese and Korean, will also be on sales before the presentation.

We're sitting down to discuss some roles for the show. Natalia Imperatori-Lee an instructor of religious studies at Manhattan College will join us as a co-host with Fr. Dave. I'll most likely be more of a features producer and have less of an air-presence than I do on the BustedHalo cast...but still a significant one. I'll be doing The View from the Pew...and Bible Bootcamp. Fr. Dave seems to like having people to talk to. We don't want to confuse the listeners with two male voices either...since a new audience will be getting used to us.

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

Naked Men Giving Lap Dances to Ladies

***Begin Quote***

Last night I went to the Palomino in North Las Vegas to interview the new owners for my Sunday Calendar column. This strip club is the only place in the area that allows both alcohol and fully nude dancers. It's the result of grandfathering; the Palomino's special license guarantees them this monopoly until 2019.

My pov is that on the gubamint can come up with a "special license". Wonder who got paid off for that. In my America, there are two kinds of people – those workers that produce wealth for society and those drones that consume. The Aztecs had their "priestly class". We have our politicians. They basically produce nothing. In the free marketplace, every consumer has their needs addressed. Only when gubamints involved do we get this non-sense. IMHO if we had any brains, then we would NOT permit politicians to do anything that didn't apply to all equally. When they get the ability to reward their friends and punish their enemies, that's when they cross from servant to master. (To steal a word that John uses a lot in his blog.) Arghhh!

And that’s the last word.
