The Economics of Groundhog Day
By DW MacKenzie
Posted on 8/30/2006

***Begin Quote***

How does this movie relate to economics? The first time through, the day is highly imperfect because Connors lacks knowledge concerning what will happen. He lacks knowledge of how to take best advantage of what will happen during the day. By his final iteration of Groundhog Day, he has acquired virtually perfect information on how to act during this particular day, given how everyone else will react.

In economic terms the final reliving of the day constitutes what economists refer to as a perfectly competitive equilibrium based on perfect information. With full knowledge of how to realize every possible gain during this day, Connors is able take advantage of every opportunity for gain. The difference between his first time through the day and his final reliving are dramatic. While this is of course only a movie, it does serve to illustrate the wide gulf between the economists' notion of perfectly competitive equilibrium and reality.

The ability of this fictional character to relive a single day points to vital issues in economics. Perfectly competitive equilibrium requires perfect information. Ignorance leads to errors that put the ideal state of equilibrium out of reach. Ignorance and error exist due to perpetual change. In a world where everything stays the same — except our knowledge of previous days — we can approach perfection.

Phil Connors is able to live a perfect day not only because the events of the physical world are repeating perfectly (i.e. the weather), but more so because people are living it as if it was the first time. Economists refer to "Nash Equilibrium" as a situation where everyone makes plans that are optimal given the plans of others. In such a situation the plans of everyone mesh perfectly. This situation requires everyone to know about the plans of others in advance. This is the essential idea behind equilibrium theorizing in economics.

***End Quote***

I knew I liked this movie for a reason. Predictability. I've watched this numerous times, like a child, trying to see Phil do something different. Is this a glimpse into the world of the Intelligent designer?

Sadly, we, like Phil the first time thru, have no clue as to how to help people best, with fame 'n' fortune, and win the girl's heart. We have to muddle along with some general principles ("First do no harm", "Every man is endowed by his Creator with …", "thou shalt not …",  "Love thy neighbor …"). They come to us in no particular order, with no particular instructions, and with varying degrees of intensity, authenticity, and urgency. Then we have to figure it out.

And, while we are still figuring, the universe demands an answer. Reminds me vaguely of exams at the halls of jasper land. And, like Doctor Zia, the universe is a harsh grader (Wrong sign, bridge fall down, noooooo credit!). At least the Universe doesn't have that grin while you are going down in flames!

I am sure, you my fellow alums, didn't take six decades to figure this all out. Or, need some dumb movie to illustrate the principle. But in any event, it's a hoot to listen to Sonny and Cher announce the repeating day. I listen every morning to see if my name is Phil.

So, realizing that there is no "do see over" in life, we journey down the road to the finish line with only our principles to guide us.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

Arthur Roos, of Case Western Reserve, Named Treasurer
By Greg Rienzi The Gazette

Arthur W. Roos may have begun his professional life as a civil/environmental engineer, but the lion's share of his career has been spent safeguarding billions of dollars in institutional and corporate financial assets.

Now he's going to watch over Johns Hopkins'.

Following a competitive and national search, Roos has been named university treasurer and is expected to assume the post Nov. 1. He brings with him more than 25 years of experience in such money matters as debt management, investment management, operation of endowment funds, strategic planning and risk management.

As Johns Hopkins' treasurer, Roos will be responsible for providing overall leadership and protection of the university's assets and serve on various internal and external committees in fulfilling those responsibilities. Specifically, he will oversee the university's debt, banking and cash relationships and operations, insurance and risk management, short-term assets, and receipt of gifts of securities and technology licensing stocks.

He will not manage the endowment and other investments because, in 2004, the university split these responsibilities from the Office of the Treasurer and created the position of chief investment officer. The move came in recognition of the increasing complexity of endowment management and treasury operations, both at Johns Hopkins and at universities across the country.

Roos, who is currently treasurer at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, said that he was attracted to JHU by the strength of the university's leadership team, the consistent excellence of its academic programs and the prominence of Johns Hopkins among major research universities. He will report to James McGill, senior vice president for finance and administration.

"I hope to contribute by supporting the administration and the divisions with a focus on the effective management and protection of the university's assets," Roos said. "On a personal level, the move to Baltimore brings me much closer to my two daughters, who live and work in New York and New Jersey, and to friends and family in Delaware and Virginia."

A native of Albany, N.Y., Roos attended Manhattan College, where he earned an undergraduate degree in civil/environmental engineering. He earned his MBA degree in finance at Syracuse University.

Roos' professional background includes senior-level experience in both higher education finance and the corporate environment. At Case Western Reserve, he planned and managed the largest financing in the school's history to fund strategic projects and negotiated $110 million in bank credit as interim financing for a new research building. He also improved the design of the student medical plan by broadening benefits, simplifying administration and freezing premiums for three years.

Previously, Roos served for 25 years at Niagara Mohawk Holdings, a $12 billion Fortune 500 energy services company serving approximately 1.5 million customers in upstate New York. At Niagara Mohawk, Roos worked his way up from a financial analyst position to become the company's vice president and treasurer. During his time with the services company, Roos was awarded the distinguished Alexander Hamilton Award for Excellence in Corporate Finance by Treasury and Risk Management magazine and received a Deal of the Year award from Investment Dealers Digest. He also managed the largest high-yield financing of the 1990s, a $3.45 billion venture for the company.

Roos replaces the retiring William Snow, who will continue in his role until Roos officially comes on board.

McGill said that Roos, who is "very familiar with the management of institutional cash," has the ability to step into Snow's shoes without missing a beat. "Art will be a terrific successor to Bill Snow, who has performed invaluably for Johns Hopkins since 1987," McGill said. "Art has performed remarkably well at Case Western, and he has the professional and personal character to be a very successful treasurer here."

Deadspin
September 13, 2006 Wednesday 3:00 PM EST
HEADLINE: By This Rationale, Most Of You Are "Hazed" Every Weekend

Sep. 13, 2006 (Deadspin delivered by Newstex) --

OK, what does this picture say to you, other than "They should really think about having those big whiteheads removed, or popped, or something?" Does this look like some debacherous, out-of-control, dangerous exercise? A way to maliciously prey on unsuspecting freshmen who don't understand the horrors of their surroundings?

Or, you know, a bunch of college kids drinking?

This photo, along with some others of a shirtless guy dancing around in a cowboy hat, are the reason Manhattan College is cancelling most of its non-conference women's lacrosse games and forcing its players to do community service. We know this is kind of how Bob Reno over at BadJocks makes his living, but in all seriousness: It's probably time for people to chill out on this "hazing" business.

We mean, look at, say, these pictures from SUNY Cortland's lacrosse team, which led to the team receiving an unnamed punishment and having games cancelled. We ask in all seriousness: What the hell is wrong with what they're doing? OK, maybe there's a couple people under the age of 21; the scandal!

We understand that, unchecked, some sports hazing rituals can become degrading or even violent. But come on: We guarantee that every single one of you did things far, far worse than what is seen in these pictures in college; we know we did. If you go searching for incriminating pictures of minor college athletes on Webshots, you're going to find something; they're college students. Some guy types in "initiation" and "lacrosse" into his search engine, and suddenly everybody's names are all over the place, and seasons are ruined.

But, most important: Please, college students of America ... stop putting your drunk pictures on the Internet. We can't emphasize this enough. You're only asking for trouble.

Manhattan College and the College of Mount St. Vincent are prepared to review their cooperative academic program this fall, citing concerns over purpose and efficiency. The news may be the death knell of a program in existence since 1964. On September 21, the Boards of Trustees of Manhattan College and the Mount will meet and examine the case.

Smart Career Moves: The Importance of Internships and Study Abroad

For many students, the wisest decision made thus far in life was attending Manhattan College, but it does not have to end there. Life at Manhattan is not confined to the boundaries of Riverdale. Some of the most important opportunities exist outside of the campus, and it would be a shame if students overlooked them Unfortunately, many students are going to school to get the stereotypical college experience, but in the real world, employers are drawn to students with internship experience and those students who have studied abroad.

R.I.P. Mom...I will always love you
Current mood: depressed

It has been one full year since my beloved mother Diane Chavis has left me and my family. I will always remember that day...it was just like this September 15....cold...raining...and depressing. I miss her with all my heart and I am so greatful for what she did for me to get here this far.

My mother worked so hard 4 me to get an education that she never had when she was a child. Her strong will to make me get all the opportunities possible made me strive 4 more. My family will never be the same without her. She was the backbone of the family...I always challenged her authority from time to time, but I always stood by her rules.

From the moment she opened eyes on me...till the day she closed her eyes 2 me I have always loved her. My father never took the responsibilty to be a Man and left me when i was to young to even walk. I pity him because he walked out on the best woman he could have ever had and the best son who isnt a crackhead or a alcholic like his other pathetic children who havent even gone to college.

Mom.....I know you would be sooo proud of be of what I have accomplished this past year without oyu and I know right now... at this moment in time that you are watching over me. I wish you were here so I could talk to you, I cant really talk to anyone like I use talk to you. Sandy is no help...I can't really talk to her about serious stuff  like that. But now since the past year from my best dudes from High School n some real Cool people from  Manhattan College. I have made very good friends who I can speak 2 about my problems, i feel most comfortable talking to them.

Moma.....I am still goin to fulfill your your wish that I have promised you on your death bed....to graduate from college and to make something of myself instead of waisting it like Sandy did.

I love you MOM....4 Ever and Ever. And I hope that one day when it is my time to pass on that you will be waiting for me at the gates of Heaven.

Paul Chavis....The Prodigal Son

[Blog Entry}

Next Saturday, I will be in Riverdale, New York honoring a very important person. On May 10, 2001, I received a phone call that I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. My friend Chris had contacted me from New York, to let me know that my best friend from college, Kim Kennedy had suddenly passed away. One day you are sending emails back and forth, the next day your are at a wake and funeral in Wayne, New Jersey. I won't bother you with the million of emotions I dealt with starting on May 10, 2001 and throughout the years that follow.

Each year the College Of Mt. Saint Vincent (sister school of Manhattan College), holds a fund raiser. We share stories, celebrate her life and raise money for the various scholarships and classrooms named after her. That's where I will be this Saturday- celebrating her life.

Now, to those of you who never knew her, words are not enough to descrive her. She befriended me when I was 20, and new to New York and away from home for the first time. Physically, evry man I knew had a crush on her. When she spoke to you, you instantly bonded. We remained the best of friends for 11 years, sharing sarcastic comments, insulting each other's jokes and making ecah other laugh and smile.

When my wife and I found out we were having a child, we both wanted a girl. When the doctors confirmed, my wife didn't flinch: and suggested we honor Kimberly's spirit in our child- thus her name Kimberly Annalise.

If you were lucky enough to know her- honor her somehow on Saturday! If you never met her- honor someone you love!

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/14620421/

Woman, 72, orders bears out of her kitchen
Homeowner scares off mom and her cub by yelling and clapping her hands
Updated: 8:34 a.m. ET Sept. 1, 2006

***Begin Quote***

VAIL, Colo. - A 72-year-old woman making pot roast in her kitchen discovered uninvited guests in her home Thursday: a bear and her cub.

The unidentified woman walked into the kitchen and found the bear standing six feet away, apparently surprising it, Vail police Sgt. Dan Torgerson said. The bear hissed at her and swatted her chest and arm, giving her some minor scratches. The woman then scared it off by yelling and clapping her hands.

***End Quote***

This lady was EXTREMELY lucky.

I'd recommend abandoning ship in the face of any predator. Until you return with your "equalizer" of the Sam Colt variety. The purpose of a side arm is to have your defense at hand when needed.  In this instance, one should have it even if you're wandering your own house. These days you never know when you'll have a two legged or four legged predator to defend against. Better them then you!

And that’s the last word.
Curmudgeon
