Any Volunteers?

The Jasper Jottings Editorial Board --- Me and Mike --- are now accepting applications for "MySpace Investigative" reporter. No salary of course! Join the exciting world of inet investigations. You get to (at your own expense, of course) look at strange websites, some of which are … … less than tasteful. Your duties should you accept are to investigate the 1460 current "jaspers" there, find the real Jaspers, and report back to the weekly distribution your findings. Also, included are some minor clerical duties, like inviting them to join the distribution, maintaining a spreadsheet of your findings, uploading that spreadsheet to headquarters, and keep your heart pure in the quest (Some of these sites are VERY "less than tasteful"). Once the quest is completed, we'll need you to "farm" it. Keeping the seatch current that is. As a semi secret agent there is of course danger and sex involved. You must risk virus infections (computer virus, not the other kind) that are known to exist on MySpace, as well as the other Sexy sites. The Jasper Jottings Editorial Board takes no risk in this position. Should you or any of your MySpace Investigative Team be killed or captured, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of you. Good luck. Send an email to apply!

For the less adventuresome, there are also similar assignments (minus the sex, and most of the danger) in:

è the Martindale's site of lawyers (sex around lawyers? Nah!) with 223 Jaspers. (Can you spell boring?)

è the webshots site with 6819 photos to be investigated.

è the friendster site with 412 "friends" to be investigate.

è the flicker site with 72 photos to be investigated.

è the omegli site with 149 blog entries to be investigated.

And a bunch of other places that need qualifying and quantifying.

WWII hero Gabaldon dies
By MATT SEDENSKY, Associated Press Writer Mon Sep 4, 7:14 PM ET

***Begin Quote***

MIAMI - Guy Gabaldon, who as an 18-year-old Marine private single-handedly persuaded more than 1,000 Japanese soldiers to surrender in the World War II battle for Saipan, has died. He was 80.

***AND***

His exploits earned him the nickname the Pied Piper of Saipan.

***End Quote***

I remember hearing about this in the Fifties, but had forgotten about it until I read this story. I put a different spin on it. Rather than "My actions prove that God takes care of idiots" as he says, I say the Intelligent Designer was demonstrating the "blessed are the peacemakers" part.  Too bad we could not have learned from him a little more about driving crazy ideas to completion. Saved gobs of lives. That's a better than a lifetime of work of better people than I am have ever accomplished.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

Parthenia, Consort Of Viols, To Perform At Manhattan College
Quartet receives praise for its repertoire of viols
Performance to feature actor Paul Hecht and soprano Jacqueline Horner

RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Parthenia, the much-praised consort of viols, will perform at Manhattan College on Tuesday, Sept. 26 at 8:15 p.m. in the Chapel of De La Salle and His Brothers.  The program is free and open to the public.

The performance at Manhattan College is entitled “When Music and Sweet Poetry Agree: Shakespeare, Donne and their Elizabethan Musical Contemporaries.”  The performance will feature actor Paul Hecht and soprano Jacqueline Horner.

A New York-based quartet, Parthenia has thrilled audiences across the United States and Europe since 1989 with its extraordinary repertoire for viols of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, from Elizabethan England to the court of Versailles.  The consort of viols, much loved by musicians in Renaissance Europe, is the precursor of today’s string quartet.

Parthenia has been hailed by The New Yorker as “one of the brightest lights in New York’s early music scene.”  The New York Times says it’s “a first-rate consort of viols.”  Parthenia collaborates regularly with other ensembles, such as Piffaro and Lionheart and has performed at the Regensburg Tage Alter Musik Festival, among other acclaimed music events.

Rosamund Morley is Parthenia’s treble viol player, and Lawrence Lipnik is the tenor viol.  Beverly Au and Lisa Terry are the bass viol players for Parthenia, which is devoted to playing passionate viol consort programs for the contemporary listener.  The members are well known individually, as well for their engaging performances with some of the best early music ensembles in America.

“We’re dedicated not just to singing these songs, so to speak, but to making them have a sense of movement through the evening,” says Morley, a former member of the New York Consort of Viols.

Hecht, who served as N.Y. branch president of the Screen Actors Guild from 1991-95, made his Broadway acting debut nearly 40 years ago and earned a Tony nomination for his role as the Player in Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.  He has also appeared on such television shows as Law and Order and Remington Steele.

A native of Northern Ireland, Horner is a member of the world-renowned ensemble Anonymous 4 and has a career as a soloist, singing the music of composers such as Bach and Babbitt.  She also teaches singing and ensemble vocal technique.

For more information about this concert, please contact Liam Mulligan, Manhattan College’s director of performing arts, at (718) 862-7254. More information about Parthenia can be found at www.parthenia.org.

If you are a member of the press and wish to cover the event, please call Scott Silversten at (718) 862-7232 or e-mail scott(DOT) silversten (at) manhattan (DOT) edu.

Manhattan College is located at West 242nd Street near Broadway in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, one mile from the Westchester County line and accessible by MTA subway line 1.

Founded in 1853, Manhattan College is an independent, Catholic, coeducational institution of higher learning offering more than 40 major programs of undergraduate study in the areas of arts, business, education, engineering and science, along with graduate programs in education and engineering.  For more information about Manhattan College, visit www.manhattan.edu.

Carton looks for upset in sheriff's primary race
September 05, 2006
By Brendan Scott Times Herald-Record

Goshen — Four years ago, Republican voters had had enough with scandal and embarrassment emanating from the Orange County Sheriff's Office.

They ousted the well-liked but management-challenged sheriff, Frank Bigger, in the Republican primary. The spoils went to Carl DuBois, a little-known retired police lieutenant from Middletown with a Boy Scout image and a promise to reform the 400-employee agency.

By most accounts, DuBois has delivered. Since 2003, the sheriff has overhauled policy, restored relationships with estranged county leaders and taken on new, high-profile roles for the office.

The change has improved the credibility of an agency once so unruly, lawmakers threatened to disband it. It has also made DuBois politically strong. In what many predict will be the best election year for state Democrats in recent memory, the local party decided to leave DuBois unchallenged.

Then there's Tom Carton.

More or less unknown outside Monroe, Carton's dogged advocacy for police causes has made him something of a celebrity in local cop circles. With little support or money, the retired New York City police sergeant has risked his political future and challenged DuBois to a duel.

They meet Sept. 12 in the Republican primary. It's a rematch of sorts.

"This is a case of history repeating itself," Carton said.

To be sure, some are hoping this underdog can turn the tables on DuBois. What aid Carton has received has come largely from quarters still simmering over DuBois' unprecedented defeat of Bigger and the management regime the new sheriff installed.

But Carton says his interest in the sheriff's post predates the Bigger-DuBois feud, and that he actually considered challenging Bigger in 2002. Carton admits the $48 million-a-year agency has improved since then. It just fails to live up to its potential under DuBois, he says.

To Carton, press conferences and photo-ops about the office's drug sweeps or expanded tactical team conceal an ineffective use of such resources. He says the tough discipline DuBois has doled out on rank-and-file deputies betrays favoritism towards the agency's top brass.

"I'm not saying the office is falling part, just that it's not being used properly," Carton said. "Four years ago, it was falling apart, but there are still resources that aren't being used. These are tools, not toys."

But, out-raised and out-spent, Carton has struggled to gain traction. As of mid-August, his campaign had $2,446 on hand, while DuBois had $23,989.

There are no published polls on the race, but most see DuBois as a strong favorite to repeat his 2002 win. For his own part, the incumbent sheriff says Carton is a candidate without a constituency.

"Where is the outcry?" DuBois said. "If what he says were true, people would be hollering. They would be calling for my head. They're not. He's the only one calling for my head."

Jack Conceicao

He has one of the most recognizable names in the business...and for over two decades, Jack Conceicao (pronounced con-say-so for those of you who care) has been doing his thing here at WINS.

Jack started out as a desk assistant while still attending Fordham University. He worked his way up through news and sports and has been at the editor's desk since 1984.

While at Fordham, he spent most of his waking hours at WFUV-FM where he did everything from news to sports to DJ to Public Affairs Director.

Jack has also worked at Channel 5, at the Fox News Channel, and as an Adjunct Professor at College of Mount Saint Vincent and Manhattan College.

Jack doesn't just sit at the editor's desk. He's the writer and producer of our "Good for New York" series...and he's our NPA coordinator, in charge of newsroom entry-level hirings.

So what doesn't Jack do?

"Windows and diapers," says Jack.

Don't worry, Jack. The windows here are sealed and your two girls, Susie and Christina, aren't far from their teen years.

On second thought, Jack...be worried. Be very worried. :)

Hi John,

Thanks for your comments regarding my daughter Mary. Actually, I do not have to pay to get the announcements printed, but I do have to compose and send them in. Our beloved Alma Mater doesn’t believe in sending out press releases or announcements concerning their students.

And while I’m at it, I might as well admit that my son Thomas gets his brains from his mother too. But his looks come from me, poor kid. BTW he’s a sophomore at University of Rhode Island majoring in Pharmacy.

Always good to see your kind remarks about a fellow Prepster and Jasper!!

Louis87, You should connect with Doctor Dans [Dans, Peter E. (1957)] via Jottings. HE wrote "Doctors in the Movies". And, yes, he is an MD. Fjohn68-

ZFound (Jaspers Found on Ziggs http://www.ziggs.com)

Ziggs harvested all the public personal pages as a search engine would. Using their free offering, I have identified ~700 possible Jaspers from it. I'm planning to share 10 "found on Ziggs" Jaspers each week in the coming weeks. The first group moves in this week's issue. I don't like to overwhelm the readership with too much of anything. Besides "harvesting" takes a lot of time. And, these folks thought they could hide from Jasper Jottings!

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

http://www.theNewspaper.com

Article Date: 8/19/2006
Title: Federal Appeals Court: Driving With Money is a Crime
Subtitle: Eighth Circuit Appeals Court ruling says police may seize cash from motorists even in the absence of any evidence that a crime has been committed.

***Begin Quote***

Associates of Gonzolez testified in court that they had pooled their life savings to purchase a refrigerated truck to start a produce business. Gonzolez flew on a one-way ticket to Chicago to buy a truck, but it had sold by the time he had arrived. Without a credit card of his own, he had a third-party rent one for him. Gonzolez hid the money in a cooler to keep it from being noticed and stolen. He was scared when the troopers began questioning him about it. There was no evidence disputing Gonzolez's story.

Yesterday the Eighth Circuit summarily dismissed Gonzolez's story. It overturned a lower court ruling that had found no evidence of drug activity, stating, "We respectfully disagree and reach a different conclusion... Possession of a large sum of cash is 'strong evidence' of a connection to drug activity."

***End Quote***

Oh, I see. Travel with cash and the modern day highwaymen can rob you at will. At least in the old days, you could shoot robbers. Now they'll shoot you.

This is un-American.

But you sheep just keep thinking that all's ok.

And that’s the last word.
Curmudgeon
