Monday September 18, 2006

Online Registration is now open for the 6th Annual James Keating O'Neill Memorial Golf Classic/Long Island Jasper Golf Outing (www.jkogolf.org).  This year's event is on Monday, September 19th at the Hamlet Wind Watch Golf & Country Club in Hauppauge, Long Island.  If you can't make it out for golf, join us that evening for the cocktails/reception.

The event is sponsored by the Manhattan College Alumni Society and the James Keating O'Neill Foundation.  All proceeds from the event benefit the James K. ***Begin Quote***

When Michael Graham's wife Elizabeth was diagnosed with motor neurone disease, she made up her mind to die before she became completely immobile. Michael knew he would have to help her - even though it could land him in jail. What he wasn't prepared for was how long it would take and how far he would have to go

***End Quote***

I would never criticize someone's journey; nor the choices they make along the way. I have enough trouble steering my own ship. This is a story with sadness all around. Sadness that they have to travel to get under the control of permissive government. Sadness that human ingenuity hasn't delivered a solution for them. Sadness that our ethical development has grown to understand the way out of the dilemma. The Intelligent Designer will have to sort it all out. It's way above my pay grade. But, I know that life must be supported, nurtured, and preserved. In a delicate balance, we need the fine control of the human conscience; not the heavy had of government regulation. Persuasion; not coercion. I'd have rather preserved life. But I understand the choice. I don't agree with it. But, I'm not prepared to use the force of  government to prevent it. Hopefully, we'll all learn a little from the story. I'm sure that my fellow alums are further along in their ethical development. Me, I'm an injineer, still stuck on the "Thou shalt not murder". With a war going on, we need to tend to what our government is doing in our name. Maybe after we solve the killing of "lots", we can focus on "individuals".

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

Uggh. I can't tell you how many times I started the e-mail to you about that. I guess I'm not great at writing about, well, me.

I was honored to be included in the list of "Irish Americans of the Year". (http://www.irishabroad.com/Irishworld/IrishAmericaMag/aprilmay06/features/TheTop100Writersmedia.asp  - scroll down)I flew to New York to attend the dinner at the NYAC. There I met fellow Jaspers Ray Kelly - the Irish American of the Year, his son Jim, also a Jasper and Tom Moran, another of the Irish Americans of the Year.

I had never met Tom before, but we had e-mailed back and forth as he is very interested in the N. Ireland Peace Process and, therefore, a regular reader at my web site, the Newshound (www.nuzhound.com). Tom talked me into marching with Manhattan in the St. Patrick's Day parade, which was something I hadn't done since I graduated. I had a great time. Unfortunately, I had to leave New York on St. Patrick's Day to head home, which meant my celebrating was cut short.

Honored

Last Thursday night I attended a dinner given by the people who publish Irish America. I was there because I was named as one of the Top 100 Irish-Americans. You may be relieved to know that the award had nothing to do with this blog and everything to do with the Newshound. Whether my efforts with the Newshound merited inclusion in such a list is hard for me to say, but I had a great night and was honored to be selected.

NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly is the "Irish American of the Year", was the keynote speaker at the event and is on the cover of this month's magazine. I got to meet him briefly and he seemed like a nice, down-to-Earth guy. I also met his son Tim Jim (I think), who, like his father, went to Manhattan College. He graduated two years after me from the same department (Math/Comp Sci), but neither of us had any recollection of the other (and I thought I was BMOC back then!).

{JR:  Jesh, it's like pulling teeth to get good news. What better reporter that than you to toot your own horn? It's not like I'm not going to EVENTUALLY find it. Don't make me work so SO hard! }

Hi John,

I'm delighted to tell you and my fellow alumni that my wife Kate (Siena '96) and I took home our son, Timothy Cornelius, from Albert Einstein Hospital in the Bronx, for the first time yesterday(August 14). He was born 6 weeks early on July 20th at 3.2lbs.  He is now a strapping 4.7 lbs.  He is our first child and we couldn't be happier with the little guy.

Thanks for all of the time you devote to Jasper Jottings.

Sincerely Yours,

Dear John,

Grace Feeney advised my today that Anthony Jablonski, '76 died on Sunday, August 6th. I do not have any of the other details, but he was the grand nephew of the late Brother Barnabas Edward O'Neill, a former Director of Alumni Relations at the College.

In Memoriam

Anthony Jablonski

Anthony Jablonski, brother of Susan King of the Graduate School and Professional Programs, died in Long Island, N.Y., after a long battle with cancer. He was 51 years old. He is survived by Kathy, his wife of 31 years, three grown children, his mother, and four siblings. He was diagnosed with an advanced stage of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma 17 years ago. King reports that her brother maintained a remarkable attitude about life throughout the course of difficult treatments and recurrences of the disease. He was actually a double survivor, having been in his office at the World Trade Center on 9-11-01 when it was attacked. Expressions of sympathy may be sent to the family c/o 205 Kimblewick Dr., Colesville, MD 20904. The family suggests that a donation to the American Cancer Society would be a fitting tribute.

{JR:  I wonder if he was really a casualty of the 911WTC disaster? So many Jaspers leave without telling their story and leaving us their wisdom! }

'They Remind Me of Everything That's Good'
By Suzie Schottelkotte The Ledger

BARTOW -- George and Diane Dosso Patisso had just moved to Florida when their lives brutally ended.

Married less than two years, they'd moved to Winter Haven from New York in July 1997, five months before they were slain at Erie Manufacturing in Bartow.

Diane's father, Felice "Phil" Dosso, was a partner in the business with George Gonsalves, who also was gunned down that night, and Nelson Serrano, who stands accused of the killings on Dec. 3, 1997.

George Patisso Jr., was just beginning his career in sales with the family business. He would have celebrated his 27th birthday three days later.

He was the kind of guy who thought of everyone else first. At 17, when most teenage boys are wrapped up in their own lives, Patisso joined the Big Brothers organization and befriended young boys in his community.

An accomplished athlete, he excelled on the football team at Clarkstown South High School in West Nyack, N.Y.

At his funeral, George's former teammates laid their football jerseys in his casket to honor their friend. He was buried with those jerseys.

George's family organized scholarship programs in memory of George and Diane after their deaths, awarding $2,000 for college annually at their high schools in New York.

When police sorted through the contents of George's pockets after the slayings, they found a list in his wallet of personal goals he hoped to achieve.

"To be a better husband," the list reads. "To be a better person."

George and Diane met in 1991 while attending Manhattan College in New York, where he was a sophomore majoring in finance and she was a senior preparing to enter law school. They married five years later, on Feb. 18, 1996.

After finishing law school in 1994, Diane became a prosecutor for King County, or Manhattan, in New York City in August of that year.

She loved that job, said friend and former co-worker Mary Catherine Green, now a Polk County Court judge.

"She liked that job very much, but she was very close to her family," Green said. "I think that's why she moved here."

Green said she and Diane joined the State Attorney's Office the same week, both handling misdemeanor cases.

"We got to be friends right away," she said. "Diane was the kind of person who could wear a burlap sack, walk down a runway and make it look like an evening gown.

"She had such style, grace and generosity of spirit that she was just a joy to be around," Green said.

The Patissos were practically newlyweds when she met them, Green said.

"Diane's loyalty and devotion to her husband was very unforgettable," she said.

"I still keep a picture of Diane and her husband in my office because they remind me of everything that's good," she said. "Everything about Diane lifted me up and made me a better person.

"Looking at her reminds me of good people," Green said. "I always want to remember her in my life because my memory isn't how she passed -- it's how she lived."

Dear John,

Peter Weiden, '49 was a member of a great Manhattan Family. His late Father Mathias was an Engineer who graduated from Manhattan as was his late brother Mathias, '46. His brother Bob is a member of the Class of 1954 and his son Brendan is a member of the Class of 1979, and Brendan's wife Kathleen (nee McCarrick) is also a member of the Class of 1979. His daughter Bernadette (Glendon) is a member of the Class of 1983. In addition, I believe that his nephew Conrad is a member of the Class of 1980, and his niece Elizabeth is a member of the Class of 1990.

I may have missed some other Jaspers in the family but I do not think so. The Weiden Family lived in Woodlawn for many years and were very active in the Parish, Saint Barnabas. Pete was a great supporter of Manhattan Athletics, and it is rumored that he once was one of the Jaspers that "borrowed" the Fordham Victory Bell for use at a Basketball rally in Smith.  He was a vocal  presence at many of the meets that his son Brendan participated in as an outstanding oarsman on the Manhattan Crew Team.

I forwarded the Obituary in a separate e-mail.
            May He Rest In Peace.

Dr. Crews Named Interim Dean of Graduate Studies

Thursday, August 10th, 2006

The College of Saint Elizabeth is pleased to announce Dr. John R. Crews, CSE Coordinator of the College’s Masters Programs in Educational Leadership, as interim dean of Graduate Studies at CSE.

A member of the College community since 2003, Dr. Crews succeeds former Dean of the School of Graduate and Continuing Studies, Dr. Dorothy A. Prisco.

A 1984 graduate of Rutgers University School of Education, Dr. Crews has had extensive experience in both public school and college/university teaching and administration within his 40-year career.

The College of Saint Elizabeth (CSE), 2 Convent Road, Morristown, New Jersey 07960, is pleased to announce CSE Coordinator of the College’s Masters Programs in Educational Leadership, Dr. John R. Crews, as interim dean of Graduate Studies at CSE. His responsibilities will include working directly with the graduate program directors on all matters related to the College’s graduate programs, while maintaining his relationship with CSE Education Department and the Graduate Education programs. Dr. Crews succeeds former Dean of the School of Graduate and Continuing Studies, Dr. Dorothy A. Prisco.

“John is well suited to lead in the operations of the College’s Graduate Studies division during this interim period,” said James Dlugos, vice president and dean for Academic Affairs at CSE. “His appointment will allow us to approach the selection of a permanent Dean with due consideration for both the short and long-term needs of the College in mind.”

Dr. Prisco relinquished her duties as dean of the School this past July and has accepted a new challenge as Vice President for Academic Affairs at Delaware Valley College in Doylestown, Pa.

“While we are happy for Dorothy and her new colleagues at Delaware Valley College, we are mindful of the many contributions Dorothy has made to CSE and to the School of Graduate and Continuing Studies during her time with us,” said Dr. Dlugos. “Dorothy’s experience and energy will be missed as we engage in the process of renewal for the Academic Affairs division.”

With extensive experience in both public school and college/university teaching and administration, Dr. Crews has served in several high-level positions within his 40-year career. He has served as the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction at Scotch Plains-Fanwood Public School in Scotch Plains, NJ (1997-2000), and Principal of both Ridgewood High School in Ridgewood, NJ (1989 – 1997) and Ocean Township High School in Oakhurst, NJ (1985 – 1989), and has been working at the College of Saint Elizabeth for 2003.

“It is an exciting time for both myself and the College,” said Dr. Crews. “The people in the Graduate division are a terrific group; bright, articulate and very committed to providing excellent learning experience for their students. I look forward to collaborating with my fellow colleagues in enhancing the College’s graduate programs and working closely with our surrounding business community members on developing new educational opportunities for their employees.”

A 1984 graduate of Rutgers University School of Education, Dr. Crews received his M.A. in Education and the Behavioral Sciences from Kean University in Union, NJ in 1972 and his B.S. in Education from Manhattan College in Riverdale, NY. He serves as a member of the Planning Committee for the Institute for Educational Leadership in Washington, D.C., an assistant coordinator of Laboratory for Student Success for the Mid-Atlantic Deans’ and Superintendents’ Network at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pa., and has been active in numerous industry organizations. He is a professional member of such associations as the New Jersey Principal’s and Supervisors’ Association, National Association of Secondary School Principals, and New Jersey Association of Teacher Educators.

Dr. Crews, resides in Warren, New Jersey.

Roman Zvarych, justice minister

He is 53 years old, born in New York (USA) and graduated either from the Manhattan College or from Columbia University - various versions of his biography interpret this page of his life variously, while Zvarych himself, as is known, is also incapable of answering this question intelligibly.

His foreign biography (up to 1991) arouses certain doubts and questions. On arrival in Ukraine he formally headed the Demos information and analysis service, but actually engaged purely in politics (he joined the leading bodies of Party of Reforms and Order and the People's Movement of Ukraine and was twice - not counting the current convocation of the Supreme Council - elected a people's deputy).

His only experience of administrative management comes from his leadership of the same ministry in the Tymoshenko government (moreover, it is typical that both then and now Zvarych started his activity by "outbidding" - with hints of resignation). This year and half have shown that Zvarych cannot be called a great connoisseur of jurisprudence, and so those analysts are probably right who consider that his present appointment was conditioned not so much by the need to run the Justice Ministry (it is one of the few bodies of the central executive that traditionally is distinguished by good organization of work and selection of leading staff) as by the desire of Yushchenko to have his own controller in the flow of statutory documentation, which, according to legislation, has to be registered there.

HEADLINE: Charter school leaders ready to blaze trails
BYLINE: By Rob Nelson, and Susan Langenhennig, West Bank bureau

Eight veteran educators are guiding the fledgling Algiers Charter Schools Association through its first full school year.

New principals also are taking the helm at Holy Name of Mary School in Algiers and three private West Bank schools as the new term begins.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, ACSA opened five schools in December and a sixth, William Fischer Elementary School, in March.

Earlier this year, the state approved ACSA's request to run two additional schools, Harriet Tubman and McDonogh No. 32 elementary schools, both of which have been shuttered since the storm.

The principals selected to lead the schools said they are excited to be a part of the burgeoning charter school movement that has emerged in New Orleans since Katrina.

Their work is helping to rebuild a public school system essentially dismantled by the storm, they said.

ACSA, which served nearly 4,000 students in 2005-06, is the only such system of charter schools in the city. Its school year began Monday.

Here's a look at the new school leaders on the West Bank:

Archbishop Blenk High School

Sister Maria Colombo, a Salesian who was principal for the past three years at Immaculata High School in Marrero, is the new principal of Archbishop Blenk High School in Gretna.

Having served at the West Bank's two Catholic girls high schools gives her a unique ability to help bring the two institutions together as they plan for a merger in 2007-08.

"Everybody I've met here (at Blenk) has been wonderful, very dedicated to the school," she said. "Of course I love Immaculata but I am happy to be at Blenk. I know it will be a great school year because the faculty is very dedicated."

A native of New York, Sister Maria holds a bachelor's degree in education from William Patterson University in New Jersey, master's degree in theology from St. John's University in New York and a master's degree in administration and supervision from Manhattan College in New York.

Strippers + Lacrosse = Duke Revisited
This entry was posted on 8/11/2006 12:00 PM and is filed under uncategorized.

Well, it's about time we posted another of our innumerous aggregate of college photos depicting apparent hazing.

A senior student on the women's lacrosse team at NCAA Division 1 Manhattan College has apparently publicly-posted some provocative photos of her final team initiation at the school.  And here they are:
      Stripping for the Freshmen
      Freshmen Drinking Dames
      Lap Dances
      Dancing with the Stripper
      "Let the Stripping Begin"
      More Lap Dancing
      And, More Lap Dancing
      More Drinking Games

Well, here is the Manhattan Lacrosse roster. You can easily surmise the team member responsible for posting these photos. Additionally, the college policy on hazing states:

"Hazing in any form is expressly prohibited at Manhattan College. Hazing is defined as any planned action or created situation, whether on or off campus, that is demeaning to an individual; produces mental or physical duress, harassment or ridicule; or which threatens or endangers the health or safety of any person.

Such activities and situations include but are not limited to, any action or situation that recklessly or intentionally endangers mental or physical health or involves the forced consumption of liquor or drugs for the purpose of initiation or affiliation with any organization, paddling in any form, creation of excessive fatigue, physical and psychological shocks, morally degrading or humiliating games or activities, late (post-midnight) work sessions that interfere with scholastic activities and any other activities that are not consistent with policies and regulations at Manhattan College.

This policy governs the conduct of students, faculty and other staff as well as visitors and other licensees and invitees on Manhattan College' campus and property. Violation of the policy will result in the ejection of a violator from College property and possible prosecution; and, in the case of a student or faculty violator, suspension, expulsion or other appropriate disciplinary action, according to existing judiciary procedures; and, in the case of an organization authorizing such conduct, rescission of permission for that organization to operate on campus property as a result of having its official recognition as a student organization withdrawn. Further, such penalties shall be in addition to any penalty, pursuant to the penal code or any other chapter to which a violator or organization may be subject."

You do the math and let us know what you think (email addy up top).  However, don't even try, "hey it's just kids having fun." We will neither read it nor refrain from what may ensue...

{JR:  Well, I'm no guru on "hazing", but from the pics I saw, it seemed pretty tame. It may well be "hazing", but comparing it to Duke seems over the top to me. I'm sure that Brother President will be NOT to pleased. As an alum, it probably doesn't represent the high standards that we espouse. Human frailty? I KNOW that at times I wasn't a paragon of virtue when I was in injineering skool. Paragon, heck, I'm not sure reached the level of "absurd", "obnoxious", or "disgusting". Would I cut them some slack? Nah, not likely. Toss 'em out? Nah! Would I put them in stocks on the campus … maybe? Would I say it "kids having fun"? Maybe. Would I say it's dangerous and fraught with opportunities for big problems? Yup. Does it happen, yep? Will it happen, yep? Is it the worst that can happen, nope?}

John, this note is regarding my fraternity brother, John Fusco.  John was a wonderful fraternity brother.  We lost contact after we graduated from Manhattan.  One thing many people may not know about John is that he was a representative to our Fraternity's (Alpha Phi Delta) National Convention in 1957 or 1958.  If researched, I could determine the exact year since the Fraternity Convention was in Schroon Lake.  The same location and time for the filming of the movie, "Marjorie Morning Star".  We both had the opportunity to meet and or see several actors and or their escorts.  Gene Kelly, Natalie Wood and escort Robert Wagner, Ed Wynne, Martin Balsim and Carolyn Jones.

John will be missed by his family and his fraternity brothers.  We will all keep him and his family in our prayers.

John Antenucci S'59

{JR:  Yes, it seems so easy to "lose" friends after graduating. And, making new ones is hard and they are never the same. Then, you hear of their demise, and wonder what should have been. Sigh. }

From valedictorian ... to the real world
By Patricia Breakey Delhi News Bureau

It takes years of hard work to attain the title of valedictorian.

But 10 years after graduation, four local valedictorians — Brandi Beers of Unatego, Joshua Vincentz of Stamford, Andrea Nikulich of Worcester and Ryan F. Coutlee of Edmeston — said that, in the grand scheme of things, it really didn’t make a difference being the best in class.

The title of valedictorian is given to the top graduate of the graduating class. The honor is usually based overall grade point average. The title comes from the valedictorian’s traditional role as the last speaker at the graduation ceremony.

Famous valedictorians include: "Weird Al" Yankovic, Cindy Crawford, Johnny Bench, Ben Stein, Governeur Morris, Robert Frost

Brandi Beers Miles was named valedictorian at Unatego High School in 1995. Like many high achievers, she didn’t spend all her time studying. She was a member of the band, Student Council, National Honor Society, varsity football cheerleading and French club. She earned a Regents diploma majoring in math, science and French.

Miles is now married to Bradd and they live in Murrells Inlet, S.C., with their two children, Mykenzi, 3, and Lukas, six months.

When she graduated from high school, Miles said she planned to go into the medical profession. She attended Manhattan College and then graduated from the University of Tulsa with a master’s degree.

Miles said her career took a "very different" direction and she is now a high school science teacher and is planning to pursue her Ph.D in educational leadership.

"Being valedictorian has had no impact whatsoever on my life," Miles said. "I just always wanted to be the best at what I did and earn the best grades I could, but I didn’t set out to be valedictorian."

Miles said she didn’t receive any financial aid based on her title and she has never encountered any situations in her career where the subject has come up.

"I don’t even mention it," Miles said. "And I tell my class that being first in the class doesn’t matter as much as their overall GPA and their ACT and SAT scores."

I will say this and I do not wander to anger anyone. Some college towns/cities rely greatly on their colleges and there colleges bring tons of new life to them. In New Haven Yale is a great asset to New Haven along with SCSU, Albertus Magnus, Gateway Community, University New Haven and Quinnipiac. In Burlington, VT there is UVM and Champlain College. In Boston we all know there are tons of colleges inclduding BU, Northeastern, Harvard, MIT and BC.

I have been to Providence and College Hill is beautiful. It reminds me of the Back Bay and Nantucket mixed. But while I walked the streets of Providence I did not see that many college students. Also these students are in college hill which is very close to downtown but still not downtown like in New Haven or Burlington.

NYC has NYU which adds life into that area of Manhattan. Other areas of the city though could live without there colleges because NYC is NYC. Fordham has a Linclon Center Campus that you would never know about where a few thousands kids live in two high rises. Now on the other hand some smaller colleges and universities in NYC help their neighborhoods immensly. For example I am going to Manhattan College in the Riverdale section of the Bronx and this is almost like Trinity in Hartford. Riverdale is a beautiful section of the Bronx like the West End of Hartford but there is also the bad part of the Bronx and schools like Manhattan College, the College of MT ST Vincent (in the Riverdale section of the Bronx) and Fordham Rose Hill in the Bronx draw students to local restaurants and stores and to help in these communities which may not be the best

Ciba hosts chemistry institute for top high school students

Two local students participated in the nationally recognized Ciba Specialty Chemicals High School Chemistry Institute from July 17-28.

The program, now in its 17th year, is the cornerstone of the Ciba Specialty Chemicals Foundation, the primary focus of which is to further the interests of science education and related school-to-career initiatives.

The Ciba High School Chemistry Institute is a rigorous two-week, college-level course in chemistry, designed for students entering their senior year of high school. The nationally-recognized program accepts 24 students from schools near Ciba Specialty Chemicals’ major U.S. operations in New York, Virginia, Arkansas, North Carolina, Alabama, and Delaware.

Courtney Mitchell and T. Wade Cotton represented Suffolk this year.

Mitchell attends Nansemond River High School and Cotton attends Nansemond Suffolk Academy.

“Through first-rate programs like this, we hope to inspire, develop and train the next generation of scientists, who will guide the future of the specialty chemical industry and deliver breakthroughs that will continue to improve the quality of all of our lives,” said Colin Mackay, NAFTA regional president.

Students explored organic synthesis, polymerization, chromatography and more, utilizing some of the advanced, customer-focused laboratories at Ciba’s Tarrytown, N.Y. headquarters and at its Newport, Del., plant facility.

They also spent time in laboratories at Irvington High School and Manhattan College while in the New York City metro area.

Particular attention was paid to helping students understand the myriad opportunities ahead for people with degrees in science, and help them prepare to move from classrooms to careers by exposing them to hands-on activities illustrating how chemistry and science solve real-world problems.

Though students do not receive official college credit for the program, they do have the opportunity to network with key scientists and other business leaders at Ciba. In fact, many graduates of the Institute return to Ciba after graduation to do summer internships in the lab.

“You can really see all the different aspects of chemistry,” said Mitchell. “I was considering a degree in chemical engineering before, and I am strongly considering it now. At the same time I know I need to keep my options open, but science will definitely be part of the equation.”

As part of the workshop, students also learned about the business of chemistry by designing their own companies and products, and participating in career-mentoring activities with Ciba scientists and business leadership. The faculty is comprised of local high school teachers, college professors, and Ciba scientists and business leaders.

The Ciba High School Chemistry Institute is funded primarily through the Ciba Specialty Chemicals Education Foundation, which forges partnerships among schools, businesses and communities to support career-based learning and help young people prepare for the transition from school to career. Ciba sites across the country also contribute funds to sponsor students from their communities.

Actually be social and leave the house. My friend Melanie lives in Chicago, but because she is going to be and R.A. this year, she will be coming to New York and moving into the dorms soon. I plan on going to see her, since the dorms in question are only 30 minutes away at good old Manhattan College . I also really need to get together with Caroline and Christina, two of the few people from high school I have any interest in ever seeing.

My name is Mike. I am 20 years old and I live in New Jersey. I am currently going into my senior year at Manhattan College in NY. I love two things...sports and school. I am a Government major, with an Econ minor. After three years at school, I have accumulated a ton of friends, a lot of good ones, a 3.5 gpa, a position as vice president of the Political Debate Club, a spot in the Honors Enrichment Program, jobs in Student Services, various scholarship nominations, involvement in intramurals, and a strong possibility of attending a good law school next year. That's great and all. But none of it matters when you spend every day feeling terrible

Police offer self defense classes for women
By Crystal Forester, Staff Writer
(Created: Tuesday, August 08, 2006)

***Begin Quote***

Carrollton Police officers Lauryl Duncan and Shannon Hartzell are hoping to empower women by giving them the tools to defend themselves both physically and emotionally against attacks.

Duncan and Hartzell are teaching a Rape Aggression Defense System, a program that teaches women realistic self-defense tactics and techniques, on Saturday and Sunday.

“This gives women an options. It gives that one person the tools to defend herself,” Hartzell said. “It is important for women to have that option to defend themselves.”

The class is two-fold, Hartzell said. They want to teach women what they can do to not become a victim and then how to defend themselves using their voice and strikes to specific areas, she said.

“We want women to be able to defend themselves enough so the attack stops and they can escape,” Hartzell said.

This class is designed to teach women everything from awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance to the basics of hands-on defense training. The R.A.D. system is not the same as a martial arts program.

No offence, but what a waste. Issue some "girlie guns", the small 380s, and take 'em down to the range. I trust them to tell the difference when they are threatened and when they are not. If they make a mistake, then I'd call that "collateral damage". I'd assume that the attacker, who wasn’t an attacker, didn't make their intentions very clear. I think Sam Colt did make women equal. It's only the racist gun laws of the Post Civil War South, that have been taken to absurd extremes, keep them defenseless. We trust women to raise children, work "big" jobs, and … heck … we even let them vote! BUT we don't allow them to have the tool that would ensure their physical safety!! It's the modern equivalent of barefoot and pregnant. Muggers, Rapists, and other Ne'er-Do-Wells would be well advised to reform. I know what I'd be teaching them girls. And, it wouldn't be about "realistic self dense techniques". It WOULD BE shoot straight, aim for the center of mass, and keep pulling until it clicks! That's "a realistic self defense technique" that is unequivocal.

And that’s the last word.
