Parents: The antidote to liberal brainwashing
Rusty Humphries
a nationally syndicated talk-radio host

***Begin Quote***

Home is the perfect place to try this. Kids need to make comments and arguments with their parents about current events and politics. This is where their education begins. Parents need to listen, offer their own insights and keep the exchanges calm and more discussion-like than argument-like.

***End Quote***

One can only hope that parents are the antidote to a lot of the nonsense that goes on today and pass for wisdom or intelligent discussion. Hopefully, people don't need permission from a talk show host to chat with their children at dinner time. I always knew what my Mom's opinion was. Hard work, good; Goofin' off, bad! In a lot of ways that formed my value system. I saw her schlepping off to work and coming home a lot worse for wear 'n' tear. I was not so stupid as to want to put more load on her back. I saw first hand what inflation, paying taxes, dumb laws, stupider regulations, and the "heavy lift" of the day2day grind meant. Inflation stole her savings. Taxes stole an ever increasing part of her pay. Dumb laws made her life tougher. Regulations made for angst to comply. And, the socialist mass transportation system that she had no choice about using stole minutes out of her life.

Nah, I didn't need to sit down to have any antidote applied. I'm a Jasper and we are quick studies.

And we don't need anyone's permission to think for ourselves.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

Stage Legend Barnard Hughes Dead at Age 90
by Broadway.com Staff

Barnard Hughes

Tony- and Emmy Award-winning actor Barnard Hughes died on July 11 at New York Presbyterian Hospital after a brief illness. He was 90.

Hughes was born in Bedford Hills, NY, on July 16, 1915. He held jobs as a dock checker in New York harbor, a Macy's salesman and a Wall Street copyreader before auditioning for the stage on a dare from a friend. His career, which began in 1934 with one line in the Shakespeare Fellowship Repertory Company production of The Taming of the Shrew, spanned seven decades. Hughes made his Broadway debut in 1935 in Herself Mrs. Patrick Crowley. He then toured the United States performing in stock theatrical shows before serving in World War II. By 1945, he was back in America on the stage. (While performing in a veterans' hospital show, he met actress Helen Stenborg, his wife of 56 years, whom he married in 1950.)

Hughes is best remembered for his signature performance as a curmudgeonly father haunting the memory of his playwright son in Hugh Leonard's 1978 Tony Award-winning play, Da. Hughes won a Tony Award and a Drama Desk Award for his performance and later recreated the role in the 1988 screen version. He also received a Tony nomination in 1973 for his performance as Dogberry in the New York Shakespeare Festival's production of Much Ado About Nothing. Other Broadway credits include Advise and Consent, Nobody Loves an Albatross, Hamlet, How Now Dow Jones, Uncle Vanya, The Good Doctor, Angels Fall, End of the World, The Iceman Cometh, Prelude to a Kiss and Waiting in the Wings. Waiting in the Wings, which was presented in 2000, marked his final Broadway appearance and also featured his wife. Other notable stage credits include You Can't Take It with You at the Abbey Theatre of Dublin andDa at Dublin's Olympia Theatre. In 2000, he and Stenborg received a Drama Desk Award for Lifetime Achievement. In 1995, he was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame.

Hughes also had a long history on the small and big screens. His film credits include Hamlet with Richard Burton, Midnight Cowboy, The Hospital, Cold Turkey, Where's Poppa?, First Monday in October, Oh, God!, Tron, Maxie, The Lost Boys, Doc Hollywood, Sister Act 2 and Cradle Will Rock. He starred in the television series Doc, Mr. Merlin and The Cavanaughs and played a recurring role on Blossom. In 1977, he won an Emmy Award for guest-starring on Lou Grant.

He served for over a decade as President of the Episcopal Actors' Guild and for many years on the council of The Actors' Fund. Hughes also held an honorary doctorate from Manhattan College, the school he'd dropped out of to become an actor.

Hughes is survived by his wife; his son, Tony Award-winning director Doug Hughes; his daughter, Laura Hughes; and a grandson, Samuel Hughes Rubin.

The New York Times
July 12, 2006 Wednesday
Late Edition – Final
SECTION: Section C; Column 1; The Arts/Cultural Desk; Pg. 11
HEADLINE: Barnard Hughes, Character Actor, Dies at 90
BYLINE: By CAMPBELL ROBERTSON

Barnard Hughes, a Tony- and Emmy-award-winning actor who was well-known for playing warm-hearted if not always serious-minded father figures, died yesterday in New York. He was 90.

His death was confirmed by his son, the director Doug Hughes.

Though Mr. Hughes made his acting debut in 1934 at age 19 and already had a solid career in theater and television work, it was the 1978 Broadway production of Hugh Leonard's ''Da'' that gained him his reputation as a skilled character actor, with a particular gift for jolly old Irishmen whose cheerfulness is tinged with melancholy.

Mr. Hughes played the title role, that of an exasperatingly affable and unambitious Irish widower who haunts the memories of his emigrant son. Walter Kerr, writing about ''Da'' in The New York Times, said Mr. Hughes was ''masterly in the role of a lifetime, working skillfully as a watchmaker with every jewel in place.'' John Simon, in New York magazine, said that Mr. Hughes ''gives one of the greatest performances of this or any year.''

Mr. Simon continued: ''Put this right alongside the achievements of the Gielguds, Oliviers and Richardsons.''

Mr. Hughes beat out Hume Cronyn, Frank Langella and Jason Robards for the best-actor Tony that year and also won a Drama Desk award. He did a reprise of the role of Da for a 1988 movie version, which also starred Martin Sheen.

A frequent presence in soap operas and television series of the 1970's and 1980's, Mr. Hughes won an Emmy for his portrayal of a senile judge on an episode of ''Lou Grant.'' He also starred as an avuncular physician in a short-lived comedy series, ''Doc,'' and as an Irish patriarch in the sitcom ''The Cavanaughs.''

He had recurring roles on ''The Guiding Light,'' ''As The World Turns,'' ''All in the Family,'' ''The Bob Newhart Show'' and ''Blossom.''

Mr. Hughes also had a long film career, appearing in ''Midnight Cowboy,'' ''The Hospital,'' ''Where's Poppa?'' ''Oh God!'' ''Tron,'' ''Doc Hollywood'' and numerous television movies.

Barnard Aloysius Kiernan Hughes was born in Bedford Hills, N.Y. on July 16, 1915, to Irish immigrants. Through high school and his first year at Manhattan College, he worked a series of jobs, including as a salesman at Macy's and a dockworker, before a friend tricked him into auditioning for a repertory company that performed Shakespeare in high schools. He won a tiny role in ''The Taming of the Shrew.''

Mr. Hughes soon dropped out of Manhattan College and stayed with the company for two years, eventually playing many of the major Shakespeare roles. He then began traveling the country, performing with a repertory company in Chicago and with a comedy troupe that toured the South. After a few years in the army in World War II, he returned to acting.

In 1946, while rehearsing for a show called ''Laugh That Off'' to be performed at a military hospitals, he met an actress named Helen Stenborg. They married in 1950 and would act alongside each other throughout their careers, appearing together in Mr. Hughes's last performance on Broadway, in the 1999 production of Noel Coward's ''Waiting in the Wings.''

In addition to his wife and son, Mr. Hughes's other survivors include a daughter, Laura Hughes of New York; and a grandson, Samuel Hughes Rubin.

For the next three decades, Mr. Hughes performed in Broadway productions like ''Advise and Consent,'' ''Nobody Loves an Albatross,'' ''How Now, Dow Jones,'' ''Hamlet'' with Richard Burton, and the New York Shakespeare Festival's production of ''Much Ado About Nothing,'' for which he received a Tony nomination for his portrayal of the dim-witted constable, Dogberry.

Speaking of the early years, when he was playing mostly minor parts in film and theater, Mr. Hughes said in a 1978 interview in The New York Times that he could have played the roles ''without pants.''

''I was always sitting behind something like a desk,'' he said. ''I was a judge or a businessman or a lawyer or a doctor. Nobody saw my bottom half.''

In 1981, Mr. Hughes played the rustic schoolmaster in the American premiere of Brian Friel's ''Translations'' at the Manhattan Theater Club. Frank Rich, in The Times, called Mr. Hughes's performance ''especially exciting,'' adding that ''funny as he is, Mr. Hughes always turns his eyes sadly downward, as if he's surveying the defeated landscape of his own soul.''

In the 1980's and early 1990's, Mr. Hughes alternated his film and television career with his stage career, acting on Broadway in Lanford Wilson's ''Angels Fall'' and Craig Lucas's ''Prelude to a Kiss.'' He also performed in Dublin, playing the role of Grandpa in ''You Can't Take It With You'' at the Abbey Theater in 1989, and playing Da at the Olympia Theater there in 1991.

''I'm a feeler,'' Mr. Hughes said of his acting approach in the interview with The Times. ''As a matter of fact, I think if we had more feelers and less thinkers we'd be a hell of a lot better off -- not only in the theater, either.''

Before the Downfall of a Priest, a Fondness for the Good Life
By ALISON LEIGH COWAN
Published: July 9, 2006

DARIEN, Conn., July 8 — The Rev. Michael Jude Fay had his hair highlighted each spring at a local salon at prices of $85 or more, his hairdresser said. His vacation getaway was an ocean-view condominium in Florida that he owned with a close friend from Philadelphia. And he repeatedly spent thousands of dollars on luggage, jewelry and designer clothes, even though his salary was a modest $28,000 a year.

SPRINGFIELD CARDINALS
All ears to turn to trade talks
With Terry Evans gone to Angels, Springfield players wonder who is next.
Kary Booher News-Leader

Springfield Cardinals right-hander Mike Parisi isn't going to lie. Having his name mentioned in trade talks would be kind of nice.

"The word around the clubhouse with trades is if you get traded, it's a good thing. It means that someone likes you," Parisi said. "The Cardinals are great, but we've got studs up in the big leagues, so it's definitely a positive."

The Springfield Cardinals return to Hammons Field tonight to play the Corpus Christi Hooks in the beginning of a seven-game homestand, but all eyes might as well be on the transactions wire.

Tonight's game sits only three weeks out from the July 31 trade deadline, and perhaps nowhere will the focus be as intense as on St. Louis' Double-A affiliate here in Springfield.

St. Louis accelerated its pursuit of the National League pennant last Wednesday when it traded Springfield outfielder Terry Evans to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for proven big-league pitcher Jeff Weaver.

That move was engineered to bolster a tattered starting rotation, but it also came a month after a St. Louis Post-Dispatch story noted that the organization would prefer to deal from its Double-A Springfield rotation in order to land a powerful bat.

"We're still looking," St. Louis assistant general manager John Mozeliak told The News-Leader following the trade of Evans.

Should Springfield's rotation become a central conversation piece in trade talks, it will be interesting to see which organizations send scouts this week to Hammons Field.

Springfield's recent homestand drew several scouts each game. That included one from the Baltimore Orioles, who later dispatched scouting director John Stockstill for the series' final two games.

The Orioles likely are sellers at this point of the season, considering Baltimore is 14 1/2 games out of the AL East lead.

Keep in mind that the trade of Evans came three weeks after a pair of Angels scouts evaluated Evans at Hammons Field.

That the Cardinals would give up Evans — one of the organization's most athletic outfielders — for a pitcher who was 3-10 with an unimpressive 6.29 ERA suggests St. Louis would barter much talent in exchange for a quality big-league bat.

And Springfield has a number of prospects.

"You've got a better read on a Double-A player than if he is in A-ball," Springfield manager Chris Maloney said recently. "If you can have a good year in this league, you've got a chance to be a major-league player. It's not as much of a guessing game as an A-ball player."

Springfield's pitching trio of Chris Lambert, Stuart Pomeranz and Blake Hawksworth — they received combined signing bonuses $3.575 million within the past four years are likely to generate talk.

But an intriguing possibility is the 23-year-old Parisi, a ninth-round pick of the 2004 draft out of Manhattan College. A strikeout machine in college and in the low minors, he has a pedestrian 19-18 career record, including a 4-4 mark this season with a 4.21 ERA.

Parisi's strength is his bulldog mentality. Tired of a string of mediocre starts, Parisi scattered five hits, allowing just a run, over seven innings in a 2-1 victory at Tulsa on Thursday night.

"When I'm on the hill, I'm thinking about getting that guy out. I don't care what scouts are here or who is in the stands," Parisi said. "It's a battle between me and him. Those extra things we might talk about in the clubhouse, it's all secondary at that point."

Parisi's stock is enhanced by the fact this is his first year in Double-A and he is still learning how to pitch. And yet he has compiled an impressive number of strikeouts (65) and kept walks to a minimum (38) in working almost 84 innings.

"These guys all have a plan," Parisi said of Texas League batters. "Those pitches that are three inches off the plate, unless the umpire is giving you that much, they aren't swinging. When I was in different leagues, I could throw a curveball a foot outside and they would swing at it. Here, they don't swing at it."

This is where Parisi is learning that he can't always lean on strikeouts.

"I'm still trying to figure out how to play that cat-and-mouse game where at the lower levels you don't have to," Parisi said. "It will all come together. It's just a matter of time. If I could get five good starts in a row, then that would be nice."

EMAIL FROM JASPERS

Sent: Thursday, July 06, 2006 2:27 PM
Subject: Thanks for joining my team

From the Desk of Rudy Giuliani

Dear Friend,

Thanks for joining my team. Your support is vital to our effort to ensure that America remains safe and prosperous well into the future. Twice a month, you'll be receiving an email update from Solutions America giving you updates on our progress, including information about candidates we're supporting and recent news items that may be of interest.

Independence Day is a time for reflecting on the blessings of being an American - the ability to live our lives in freedom. Leaders from the founding fathers to Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan have constantly sought to expand freedom here at home and around the world. The responsibilities and opportunities of our own time are no less great as we work to win the war on terror while handing our nation to the next generation better than it was given to us.

Candidate Update

As part of that effort, I've been traveling across our country to help strong Republican candidates succeed in November's midterm elections. Recently, I campaigned with David McSweeney, an energetic candidate for Congress in Illinois' 8th District. I also spent time with Jeff Lamberti, a candidate for Iowa's 3rd Congressional District who shares my belief that we must reduce America's dependence on foreign oil. They are among the GOP's best hopes to pick up seats in Congress this fall.

In the coming weeks, I'll be campaigning for Senator Mike Dewine of Ohio in Cleveland on July 10th and Senator Rick Santorum on July 11th in Pittsburgh.

I believe in optimism and playing offense as we approach the 2006 elections, and I encourage you to tell your friends about us and to consider making a contribution to Solutions America so that we can continue to support strong Republican candidates across the country.

In the News

The re-launch of Solutions America with its first fundraiser of the year sparked some discussion in the past month, as did recent speeches I gave on our nation's need for a diversified energy policy and increased school choice through vouchers, which I believe is a civil rights issue for our time. Some articles detailing these recent events can be reached below:

Peggy Noonan on Rudy and School Choice
Rudy Goes Nuclear
$2M Rudy is Life of the (Republican) Party

I look forward to sending out another update in two weeks. In meantime, enjoy the summer, stay civically involved, and thank you again for your support.

Sincerely,
Rudy Giuliani

Hi John-

Just wanted to give an update on what's been going on with me for publication in the Jottings.  After 8 years in California (4 as an engineer, 4 as a student again), I've moved back east.

I graduated from UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine 3 weeks ago and began an internship at Anne Arundel Veterinary Emergency Clinic in Annapolis, Maryland last week.  Hard work, but I love it.

If anyone from the Class of '96 wants to get in touch, my preferred e-mail is {privacy invoked} c/o Jasper Jottings.

Thanks for the hard work,

Dear Ms. Katie: Thanks for the update. It will go out next Sunday. I will suggest that they get in touch via Jasper Jottings. If I put your live email address in and then post it on the web you'll be besieged with spammers and such. No extra charge for the forwarding service. Once that first connection is made, then you'll each have the other's email address and no extra spam. Now that you're in Annapolis, no chasing the midshipmen, they're too easy. ;-) FjohnR68

Philadelphians value freedom. Philadelphia is known as the birthplace of liberty. For Philadelphia to blithely trade away pieces of that individual freedom to heavily funded lobbying groups pursuing social-engineering goals based on lies is nothing short of a crime—a crime that we can only hope will be stopped by Mayor Street.

Retiring state senator receives ceremonial gavel from judges at luncheon
By ROB HART  ADVANCE ALBANY BUREAU

The Staten Island judicial community feted retiring state Sen. John Marchi yesterday, lauding him for his years of service and presenting him with a ceremonial gavel.

Marchi (R-Staten Island) was joined by a slew of judges and a colleague, state Sen. Diane Savino (D-North Shore/Brooklyn), at a luncheon in the courthouse lounge of the former Stapleton home port.

"They treat me like family," said Marchi, 85, as he prepared to dive into a buffet that included wraps and pasta salad. "I value their friendship."

The gavel was presented by Justice Philip G. Minardo, administrative judge of state Supreme Court on Staten Island, on behalf of the Supreme Court Justices and the Surrogate of Richmond County.

A gold plaque was affixed to it, citing Marchi's 50 years in office.

Due to health concerns, Marchi announced in April that he would step down from the legislative seat he has occupied since 1957.

"He was an inspiration to remain in public service," said Civil Court Judge Philip Straniere, who added that Marchi was "always very approachable about legislation."

Surrogate John Fusco said that Marchi, as a member of the legal community, had been a "role model for all of us."

He added: "No matter who is elected, they have a big void to fill."

Marchi's legislative counsel, Robert Helbock, earned the Conservative endorsement for Marchi's seat and is waging a primary against local GOP pick City Councilman Andrew Lanza (R-South Shore).

The Democratic candidate is attorney Matthew Titone, son of late Judge Vito Titone.

Want to help Africa? End foreign aid

By WALTER WILLIAMS Syndicated columnist

***Begin Quote***

No amount of Western foreign aid can bring about the political and socioeconomic climate necessary for economic growth. Instead, foreign aid allows vicious dictators to remain in power. It enables them to buy the allegiance of cronies and the military equipment to oppress their own people, not to mention being able to set up "retirement" accounts in Swiss banks. The best thing Westerners can do for Africa is to keep their money and their economic development "experts."

***End Quote***

Ahh the essence of liberty ... MYOB! Keep your money and your experts out of other people's business. Let's declare the world's thugs PNG. Toss them and their phony diplomats out! "Retirement accounts"! How about the American taxpayer's retirement accounts?

And that’s the last word.
