Now who has stored more "treasure in heaven"? Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, or Waldemar Kaminski

I was always taught that "private charity" was done secretly between God and you. If you bragged, then it was not about charity, but inflating your own ego. And, then you "got no cedit with God". A child's story with a ring of truth. One has to marvel at the Kaminski story. And, those, that say we can't survive without government welfare, or that if we left people to their own devices there would  be abject poverty with people dying in the streets, or the rich people are "greedy" by definition, those people have never met Waldemar Kaminski, and those like him.

Wish I could have met him. Maybe he was a Jasper? He certainly had the qualities that I think are emblematic of Jaspers. Quiet effective active charity. Among all the other things.

EAST DENNIS, Mass. -- Thomas W. Scherer, formerly of Slingerlands, died suddenly at his home in East Dennis, Cape Cod, on Monday, June 26, 2006.

He was married to the former Mary Faith Hughes of Albany; father of Thomas Scherer Jr., Castleton, and Dana Calkins, Brewster, Mass.; and grandfather of Sara and Jessica Calkins. He was the son of John and Edna Scherer (deceased); and brother of John H. Scherer of Voorheesville, Ruth Henderson of Delmar, Kathleen Murphy of Albany and the late Donald.

Tom was a graduate of Christian Brothers Academy and attended Manhattan College. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. He resided in Slingerlands for 35 years, where he served on the Town of Bethlehem's Zoning Board of Appeals and the board of fire commissioners of the Slingerlands Volunteer Fire Department.

Interment will be in East Dennis. A memorial service will be held locally at a future date.

Former University of Kentucky basketball player Shagari Alleyne told the New York Daily News this week that he will transfer to Manhattan College in the fall.

"I like the program, I like the coach and it's close to home," the 7-foot-3 Bronx, N.Y., product said. "My time at Kentucky was great. The fans were great. I liked it there, but this is a good move for me. It's time to come home and get it done."

Alleyne, who won a city title with Rice High School in New York, languished in his three years at Kentucky, partly because of academic problems. At least six times in the past two seasons Coach Tubby Smith kept Alleyne on the bench and did not allow him to travel to away games. He asked to be released from his scholarship early last month.

Alleyne is hoping to reach the potential he showed as a senior at Rice with Manhattan College in the 2007-08 season. In accordance with NCAA rules, he will sit out one year before he can play for Manhattan.

Alleyne, who averaged two points and 1.3 rebounds for UK last season, has a chance to be an impact player in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Manhattan won the league's regular-season championship last season under Coach Bobby Gonzalez. When Gonzalez left for Seton Hall after the season, Manhattan hired Pittsburgh assistant Barry Rohrssen as its new head coach.

"I'm going to work out hard and get ready," Alleyne said. "I'm really excited about this."

Coastal missioners return from Honduras

BANDON — Catholics from the Pacific Northwest have just returned from a weeklong mission trip to a sister community in San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

The delegation came from Bandon and Brookings on Oregon’s south coast and from Vancouver, Wash.

Parroquia Santisima Trinidad, run by the Maryknoll order, is located in San Pedro Sula’s poor Chamelecon neighborhood. It includes more than a dozen missions, one named San Juan Bautista.

The church in Port Orford, a mission of Holy Trinity here, is named St. John the Baptist, a connection not lost on the visitors from the north.

A Bandon-based team of Catholics first went to Honduras almost two years ago and worked with Maryknoll Father Tom Goekler building houses for low-income people.

“The best description of this program would be to say that it kind of combines what we would call Habitat for Humanity, with Neighborhood Watch, Bible study and child care into one program,” says Father Heiko Junge, pastor of Holy Trinity in Bandon. “If you get a free house, you have to help your neighbors build their house.”

He and five parishioners made this year’s trip, meeting 13 students from Manhattan College, a Christian Brothers’ school in New York.

The Holy Trinity delegation helped build houses again this year and did even more. The parish also donated more than $6,000 in cash, enough to build about four houses.

They brought a parishioner’s son, Dr. Brandan Stark, from the Bay Area. Dr. Stark ran a clinic for the week.

They brought loads of donated goods, including medical supplies, clothes, toiletries and school needs.

Also on the trip was electrician Tim Stadelman, who brought electricity to some new buildings. Most of the houses have neither electricity nor running water.

The Bandon and Port Orford crew also finished organizing a scholarship program for 100 first-graders. Sponsors can adopt a child for 12 years and pay for the student’s schooling.

Public schools in Honduras charge no tuition, but require certain fees, a school uniform, and gym clothes. That adds up to about $125 per year for each school child, enough of an obstacle to prevent any children from studying.

Public schools offer classes only 95 days out of the year, so the Oregon group also wants to put 20 children through a Catholic school named San Diego de Alcala.

That school offers classes 225 days out of the year, but tuition runs around $500 per year.

Dear Jasper Sullivan,

I see you asked what is IM?

IM is Instant Messaging. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Instant_messaging  Basically it’s getting a message to predefined someone quickly and easily. Think of it as email with out all the wrapping.

There are several “flavors” of instant messaging – yahoo, aol, msn, and google – all have their own. To a greater of lesser extent there are “super clients” that can speak each dialect.

So for an example, if you installed an installed AOL’s, then you and I could be “buddies”. You would put “reinkefj” is as your buddies AOL screen name. It would ask me “OK?”! And I of course would say “yes”. Then each time you looked at the AOL IM CLIENT on your machine, it would tell you if I was “available”. If I was, you could shoot me a message like “wadda u think of the new 7 3 jasper just signed”. And,I’d shoot back “itsastart”.

It’s like a direct connect to each other for short messages. Minus the spelling and grammer.

Does this help? Feel free to add me if you want to try it. One try is worth hours of explanation.

When JasperJottings leaves Yahoo, it leaves as a text message. Not an attachment. Some ISPs like AOL, for whatever reason, morph it into a message with an attachment. Not being an expert in what the various ISPs do, (It's hard enough to keep track of what Comcast does!), or why they do it, I never solved that problem. Best I can suggest is poke around your ISP's help files and see if there is an option NOT to do that. Your other alternative is to read it, when you are connected to the net, from the JasperJottings website or the Yahoo Group itself. Either will work, it just means that you don't have the convenience of having it off line in your email.

Sorry. Maybe one of our fellow Jaspers will have a suggestion.

To one and all: Since the sale at auction last year of my "Willy Don Crab" (for Baltimore's "Crabtown" public sculpture project), I've often wondered what became of it. Well, I recently got a phone call from a young lady named Kelley Ray, inviting me to a dedication ceremony for the crab at its new home, in the parking lot of the Courthouse at E. North Avenue and Harford Road in East Baltimore, just about a block away from the Great Blacks in Wax Museum. The time is 12 noon on Thursday, July 13th, which coincidentally is my 58th birthday. So it will be a very unusual birthday party for me. The one-&-only (former Governor) William Donald Schaefer himself (the subject of my whimsical portrait) will be there, so it should be an amusing confrontation of life vs. art. If you have nothing better to do and you're in the neighborhood, stop by and say hello to the 2 Willy Dons, the crab and the . . . uh . . . other crab. Thomas T. Zale has experience in process engineering, with specific emphasis on environmental engineering and the risk management aspects of environmental compliance.

Tom has a bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from Manhattan College, and a Masters, also from Manhattan, in Sanitary Engineering. He is or has been a member of the American Petroleum Institute committees on Refinery Environmental Control, and on the Oil Spills Task Force. As a member of the Task Force, Tom contributed to the interpretation of OPA 90 regulations for transportation and non-transportation facilities and evaluated oil spill prevention and response plans prepared for refineries, marketing terminals, and pipeline facilities.

Dr. Zayas is the Shanti K. Khinduka Distinguished Professor of Social Work. He is also Professor of Psychiatry in the Washington University School of Medicine. He received Ph.D., M.Phil. and M.A. degrees in developmental psychology, and M.S. in social work from Columbia University, New York, and a B.A. in liberal arts from Manhattan College, New York. He completed psychoanalytic training at the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy. He is also a visiting professor of family medicine at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in New York City. He is a native of Coamo, Puerto Rico.

Dr. Zayas’ primary interests are in clinical practice with adolescents and families and in training clinical practitioners. His clinical experience spans 25 years of working with children, adolescents, adults, and families in community mental health, psychiatric clinics, pediatric rehabilitation, and community-based primary care medicine. He is a licensed psychologist and social worker.

His research has examined child and adolescent mental health, maternal mental health in pregnancy, parent-child relations, cross-cultural factors in child-rearing behavior, family functioning, psychiatric diagnosis, alcohol use among Latino men, and psychosocial interventions in community-based primary care health centers. Presently, Dr. Zayas is conducting research on the influence of ethnicity and language on the psychiatric diagnostic process, and preparing studies on the sociocultural and developmental processes that influence suicidal behavior among adolescent Latinas and on treating perinatal depression in urban health center

George Washington's address to the second session of the First U.S. Congress:
