It is one of the most romantic stories in the history of mathematics: in 1913, the English mathematician G. H. Hardy received a strange letter from an unknown clerk in Madras, India.

{End Quote}

We have really no idea what is possible. That's why I am pro-life. Now, I'm not gonna use the power of government to tell you what is "right" and "wrong" for you. I am going to marvel at what is possible. The evidence that says we have no idea what we are missing out on. Maybe that street urchin in Addis Adadoobie wherever, maybe he's the fellow that cures cancer. Maybe the aborted baby is the girl that brings us world peace. Or, just maybe that convict, we executed, might, if he lived, write something that influences the next Hitler to go a different route. I'm not smart enough to "rule" anyone but myself and I don't do such a good job at that. But, I do think that we are killing ourselves with lost possibilities. At the very least, all those aborted babies would have been hands we need now to deal with the grey-ing of Amerika. They could have been making great and small contributions. By wiping them out, we have cut off  for better or worse – a entire branch of the human tree. Sad. I'm sure that you can see what we have all lost. Irretrievable. Irrevocable. Insanity.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

Manhattan College Announces $17 Million Gift From College’s Board Of Trustees

RIVERDALE, N.Y.Manhattan College today announced a $17 million gift from its board of trustees to the College’s Sesquicentennial Capital Campaign, a significant step toward achieving the goals of the largest financial endeavor in the Riverdale institution’s more than 150-year history.

The $17 million gift represents over 10 percent of the capital campaign goal and brings Manhattan College past the $135 million plateau.

“This gift of $17 million from the board is a measure of our commitment to the College, by making sure that Manhattan remains a vibrant institution today as well as for students a generation from now,” said Anthony Scala, Manhattan College board of trustees member and president of Lowy & Donnath, Inc.

Tom O’Malley, the Board Chairman, matched the gifts from the balance of the Board, which is over and above their regular contributions.  It includes a collective gift to the College from the De La Salle Christian Brothers who serve on the Board.

O’Malley, who assumed the position of chairman in July, has been resolute in his desire to also build the endowment to enable the College to continue its historic commitment to first generation college students, especially those from New York City who have significant financial need.  Upon being named chairman, O’Malley expressed his desire to improve Manhattan’s financial resources “by generating greater participation of its alumni and benefactors,” and he strongly challenged the board of trustees to secure increased funding.

“The Manhattan College board of trustees’ $17 million contribution to the College’s Sesquicentennial Capital Campaign represents a dramatic new dimension of trustee support for Manhattan.  Tom O’Malley, in office only a year, is proving to be the development leader the board anticipated when we asked him to accept the chairmanship,” said John Paluszek, senior counsel at global public relations firm Ketchum, trustee emeritus at Manhattan and chair of the 2004-2005 search committee that nominated O’Malley.

O’Malley, a resident of Greenwich, Conn., graduated from Manhattan in 1963 with a degree in business administration and economics.  He has been a longtime benefactor and the College recognized his outstanding business leadership by awarding him the 1994 De La Salle Medal.  Most recently, O’Malley and his wife, Mary Alice, were honored at the College’s dedication of the Mary Alice and Tom O’Malley Library in 2002, after their gift of $7.5 million led to the construction of the new 24-hour library complex.

Announced publicly in January 2003, the Sesquicentennial Capital Campaign to raise $150 million is the most ambitious development program in Manhattan College history.  In addition to the recently renovated library, plans for a new residence building next to Horan Hall and an on-campus parking garage are among the campaign’s objectives identified by the board of trustees and school administration.

Founded in 1853, Manhattan College is an independent, Catholic, coeducational institution of higher learning offering more than 40 major programs of undergraduate study in the areas of arts, business, education, engineering and science, along with graduate programs in education and engineering.  For more information about Manhattan College, visit www.manhattan.edu.

MURRAY, JAMES J.

MURRAY -- James J. Of Bronxville, New York and Londonderry, Vermont. Passed away peacefully on June 18, 2006 at age 67, following a long and heroic battle with cancer.

Loving husband, father, and son. Graduate of Bishop Loughlin High School Class of 1957, Manhattan College Class of 1961, and Fordham Law School Class of 1964. An accomplished attorney who practiced in New York for over 40 years, his varied career included positions at Legal Aid, a Wall Street firm, and, ultimately, a smaller practice where he applied his skills to what fulfilled him most; advocating for the laborer and the vulnerable individual. Jim was a man of formidable intellect and legal acumen, but his chief legacy to his family and to those who knew him is a model of inexhaustible selflessness, unshakable devotion to family and friends, humility, and Christian manhood. Words are an inadequate medium for expressing the magnitude of his loss to his family and to the scores he touched throughout his life. Though he left us too soon, we are immeasurably richer for having been a part of his life. He lives on in all of us. Jim is survived by his wife of 34 years, Mary Jane Riordan Murray, his children John, Elizabeth, and James, his mother, Belinda Murray, his brother Peter and his wife, and many beloved friends and relatives. Wake Wednesday, June 21 at McGrath Funeral Home, Bronxville, New York from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Funeral Mass Thursday, June 22 at the Church of St. Joseph, Bronxville, New York, at 11 A.M.

After 29 years, Jost leaves with great memories
Wednesday, June 21, 2006
BY RICH BEVENSEE
For the Star-Ledger

The idea of leaving a high school track program which he started and has fostered for 29 years doesn't exactly appeal to Brian Jost.

But his explanation for retiring from his post as the head coach of the South Brunswick girls track team makes sense. He wants to leave the program on his terms, and with only good memories.

"Track kids have a way of making each day a little bit brighter," Jost said. "They have kept me young. But I've reached a part in my life and my career where I've learned that you leave while you still enjoy what you're doing. If you wait too long, it's not fun for the kids, it's not fun for me, and it hurts the program. I can't do that to the program."

So Jost, 59, will move with his wife to a little hamlet in central Florida called Poinciana with the memory of enjoying one of his finest seasons as a track coach.

His South Brunswick squad, with the bulk of the roster made up of sophomores and juniors, tied Old Bridge for the Greater Middlesex Conference Relays title and beat the top two teams from last season to win the GMC Track crown. South Brunswick went on to place third -- one point behind runner-up Hillsborough -- at the NJSIAA/Star-Ledger Central Jersey, Group 4 meet in Hillsborough, and seventh overall at the state Group 4 meet in Egg Harbor Township.

He also oversaw the development of three of the finer young athletes in the state in juniors Stephanie McIntyre, Indira Morton and Yesenia Boynton. McIntyre won the triple jump at the NJSIAA/Star-Ledger Meet of Champions, Morton placed second in the javelin and Boynton placed sixth in the 400.

"And every athlete that competed for us at Egg Harbor moved on to the Meet of Champions. We're very proud of that," Jost said.

Jost was a hurdler and sprinter at Mater Christi High School in Queens and at Manhattan College before turning to coaching in 1973 when he started South Brunswick's girls cross-country program.

All these years later, Jost joked that he didn't have much technical expertise to pass on to his likely successor, assistant coach Stefan Moorehead. There's a great chance his modesty has already rubbed off.

"People say I'm a good coach, but it's just that I've been around a long time," Jost said. "I'm more a jack of all trades and a master of none."

Pam McLeod

1996 Nyack High School valedictorian

Ten years after her high school graduation, Pam McLeod still remembers the opening lines of her speech: "Sunny days. Sweeping the clouds away. I'm on my way to where the air is sweet. Can you tell me how to get to Sesame Street?"

Now a postdoctoral student at Stanford University and an environmental engineer who routinely dons protective gear to check pollution levels in San Francisco Bay, the 27-year-old Menlo Park, Calif., resident said she still tries to hold on to the childlike curiosity and sense of wonder she urged her 250 Nyack classmates to cling to.

"My speech was about maintaining ties to childhood, staying young at heart," McLeod said. "I think it's something that we tend to forget a little bit as we do get older."

McLeod thought she would be an environmental lawyer when she graduated from high school, but she found law didn't really interest her as she began taking environmental engineering courses during her undergraduate years at Manhattan College.

She received a bachelor of science in environmental engineering in 2000 from Manhattan, then received her master's degree and doctorate in civil and environmental engineering at Stanford. She lives in Menlo Park with her cat, Bengel.

Her particular project has to do with water contaminants such as PCBs and studying wildlife such as clams and worms to determine whether cleanups actually do the job, she said. The mix of field and lab work is endlessly interesting to her, she said.

Few of her co-workers know she was high school valedictorian, she said.

"It's not something you really talk about in the real world," she said. "At the time, it was a great honor. I enjoy public speaking, and I enjoyed writing my speech and giving it. I was the valedictorian for college as well. The speech that I wrote and gave for that wasn't incredibly different from the high school one."

Former Camden Cath. star still has eye on NBA Draft
By KEVIN CALLAHAN Courier-Post Staff
CHERRY HILL

Justin Phoenix will be watching the NBA Draft tonight with special interest.

No, not because the former basketball star at Camden Catholic High School is hoping to get drafted. That dream is over for the 32-year-old.

Rather, the three-year varsity starter for the Irish is watching to see who is drafted, and who isn't.

Both the drafted and non-drafted players could affect the future of the former All-South Jersey selection who went on to become a three-year starting forward for Manhattan College.

You see, Phoenix is hoping to return for another season of pro ball in Italy's top league.

"I think I still have a couple of years left," said Phoenix, who has played pro basketball around the globe the past 10 years. "I will call my agent after the draft. I'll watch the draft to see what players I played against and where they will go. Europe will pick up all the good players who don't get drafted."

Phoenix was one of those players coming out of college. He had tryouts with the Celtics and Sixers before going to Europe.

Since he's not a "permanent player" in Europe, he must wait to see which players in the European leagues are drafted by the NBA for him to fill out a roster.

"Teams have a permanent player allocation of two Americans and three non-permanent players and everyone else is a national player," Phoenix explained Tuesday morning while helping out at the Camden Catholic basketball camp. "If a team has a player that is supposed to go to the NBA and doesn't get drafted, in a way that messes me up because if he stays there, it is one less opening for me. But, if he goes, that is one more opening for me."

Phoenix, who scored 1,302 career points under coach Jim Crawford, played in the highest division in Italy two years ago before suffering a knee injury. Last year, he played in England and Scotland. With his knee rounding back into shape, he is hoping to resume playing in Italy in August.

"I don't feel old; I'm still having fun playing," Phoenix said. "When I do have to stop playing, I can look back on my career and be happy."

A team captain and team MVP at Manhattan, Phoenix has played in Italy, Germany, Japan, Korea, Dominican Republic, Spain, Indonesia, England and Scotland. He has won championships in England and the Dominican Republic.

Phoenix, who was an assistant coach of a Division II team in Sheffield, England, last year, hopes to coach somewhere in college when he is through playing.

At 6-foot-8, Phoenix plays small forward.

"I play mostly at the top of the key and on the wing," Phoenix said. "I try to pull my man out and create space. Everyone in Europe can dribble and shoot and has great footwork."

Phoenix returns to his home in Williamstown each summer. The European season runs from mid-August until June. Each summer, he comes back with broader horizons.

"I've been in Japan and Korea and trying to understand their culture, to Germany and Italy where they are passionate about everything, to Spain where they are laid back," Phoenix said. "It makes you see difference in life. It takes a few days getting used to being home, but that makes you appreciate being home.

"Home is home."

Phoenix said the people of Italy and Spain treat the foreign pro players as celebrities.

"There are certain towns in Spain where you can't go anywhere without someone asking you for your autograph," Phoenix said. "When you go grocery shopping, they check out to see if you are eating properly or they will call the coach."

Phoenix has taken advantage of working in Europe to check out some of the sites. However, his schedule of playing one game on the weekend and practicing twice a day and lifting weights five days a week keeps him from becoming a tourist.

"I've seen a lot of things," Phoenix said. "I wouldn't take any of it back. I would do it all the same way."

That's why he still wants to do it. And why he'll be watching the NBA Draft tonight.

"There was so much I didn't know coming out of high school and college, you just think NBA, but there is so much out there," Phoenix said. "I used to watch the NBA Draft to see if I would get drafted, now I watch to see what country I can go to or get a look at."

Saugerties graduation: 'Ready to go, but ... not ready to leave'
By Patricia Doxsey , Freeman staff

SAUGERTIES - Together they have shared the trials and tribulations of life so far, and on Saturday the senior class at Saugerties High School gathered to share another memorable - and probably their last - moment together as a class: graduation.

It was a bittersweet event for the 241-member class. As the students received their diplomas, marking the end of a 13-year journey that many had made together, they bid farewell to friends and prepared to set a course for their journey into the future.

"I'm ready to go, but I'm not ready to leave," said Olivia Guerriero, the senior class secretary. "We really have a great class."

Guerriero, 18, daughter of Ernest and Patricia Guerriero, will beheading to SUNY Albany in the fall, where she plans to major in business.

Her sentiment was echoed by several of her classmates as they waited in the school cafeteria before walking down the school hallway and into the auditorium.

"I'm nervous, but at the same time, I'm excited and I'm very proud," said 18-year-old Elizabeth Pfeiffer. "It's a good class."

Pfeiffer, daughter of Suzanne and Robert Pfeiffer, is heading to Manhattan College in the fall, but she won't stay away from her hometown forever.

"We'll be back," she said with a laugh. "Everybody comes back to Saugerties."

"This definitely won't be the last time being together," said fellow graduate Kris Snyder. "Every time we have a reunion, we'll all come back. We're just that kind of class."

That the Saugerties High School Class of 2006 was tight-knit was apparent throughout the commencement ceremony, which was forced inside due to inclement weather.

Salutatorian Jams Harris Jr. said life will never again be as it was in high school, structured around the ringing of class bells and seeing friends seen on a daily basis.

He told his fellow graduates to take the lessons learned in high school as they work to make the world a better place.

"Seniors, we are that rising generation," Harris said. "It is now time to start making a difference."

Valedictorian Nicholas Malgieri also urged his classmates to remember their time in high school, but also to look toward the future.

"It's hard to say goodbye," said Malgieri, who plans to study law at Union College. "The little memories are what I'm going to miss the most about high school."

But "life goes on," and students need to embrace what awaits them, he said.

"Live every moment to its fullest potential because the future quickly becomes the past," he said.

Festivities Get Started

Notah Begay III, 2000 Greater Hartford Open winner, and Sadie Martinez, 11, of Hartford hit the ceremonial first balls at the opening ceremonies, which included Gov. M. Jodi Rell. Martinez represented The First Tee of Connecticut, one of the charities that benefit from the tournament. "I was nervous, but it was fun," said Martinez, who has been in First Tee for six years.

Begay lauded the community and the Greater Hartford Jaycees, whose major fundraiser returned to the main segment of the PGA Tour when St. Paul Travelers agreed in April to replace Buick as title sponsor for four years with an option for two more.

"I know sponsorship has changed a lot the last few years," Begay said. "But I would hate to see this event off the schedule because it's a genuine community event. We need to have a lot of those on tour." ... The Jaycees presented scholarships to Kelly Phouyaphone of New Britain ($25,000), who will attend Carnegie Mellon; Paul Bedard of Glastonbury ($10,000), New York University Tisch School of Arts; Linda Bujari of Rocky Hill ($10,000), Manhattan College; and Melanie Lastrina of Portland and Mercy-Middletown ($10,000), Elon University.

HEADLINE: ALLEYNE TO DITCH UK FOR JASPERS
BYLINE: BY KRISTIE ACKERT DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

FORMER RICE All-Star center Shagari Alleyne told the Daily News last night that he will transfer to Manhattan College this fall.

"I like the program, I like the coach and it's close to home," the 7-3 Bronx product said. "My time at Kentucky was great. The fans were great. I liked it there, but this is a good move for me. It's time to come home and get it done."

Alleyne, who won a CHSAA city title with Rice, languished in his three years at Kentucky. He is hoping to reach the potential he showed as a senior at Rice with Manhattan College in the 2007-08 season. In accordance with NCAA rules, he will sit out one year before he can play for Manhattan.

"I'm going to work out hard and get ready," Alleyne said of next season. "I'm really excited about this."

Alleyne is expected to be an impact player in the MAAC. "I think he makes them an instant contender in that league," said one local assistant coach. "There's just not going to be that big a kid in the MAAC. He brings experience from a high level at Kentucky and he was a serviceable player there. That is going to make him the best big man in that league."

Alleyne averaged two points and 1.3 rebounds per game in limited action with the Wildcats last season.

Where are you going? Some place exotic. I have Jasper contacts in Ireland, Hong Kong, all sort of places, and even one in Arabia somewhere.

Are you reading Jasper Jottings? Http://www.jasperjottings.com   Jasper Kahn is blogging from wherever in Africa and is pretty interesting. Blaire (2005) Lampe blogged her vagabonding thru Europe and Asia. If you have some time on your vacation, I know about 1500 Jaspers who would love to live vicariously thru your writings. See they have a profit motive. I am just trying to keep in touch and informing my fellow Jaspers.

>you cannot access the same information?

I have NO connection to MC or the Alumni Office (who does events) or the Development Office (that panhandles). I do volunteer at the College for the last decade, on their Computer Governance Committee. I also run an "underground" weekly email ezine called Jasper Jottings. I send my stuff to the alumni office. I don't think that Jaspers do a very good job in keeping in touch, networking, or helping others.

>Your notice does not explain what Platco is or why I should enroll

Plaxo is an email address sync tool. Free. It keeps address books up to date. If two people are both Plaxo members, then it does it automatically.

Otherwise, it will prompt on a settable interval to ask for an update. I use these tools to keep in touch. I had from some project or other, from some message or another, some message somewhere that you were a Jasper. Evidently, my processes sucked it in, like birds on a runway into a aircraft jet engine, and, poof, unlike the jet engine producing gull burgers, I got a couple of hundred "instant Jasper friends" that Plaxo asked for an update.

Sorry if it was intrusive, but I am interested in what all my fellow Jaspers are up to and out the "news" in my weekly Jasper Jottings. It's at http://www.jasperjottings.com and you can look at my web page and see that I don't have a tin foil hat. ;-)

I'm happy to report that recently, I've been more able to work on films in addition to "working."  Films were my "work" for about 7 years, then I started experiencing diminishing returns and had to do the unthinkable: go back to "work."

I plan to do a documentary on the reserve/guard experience post 9-11.  In 2003, I was in Iraq.  I am also working on a 5 minute short film on race relations.  I have a full-length screenplay on the same subject written as well.  I hope to market a friend's film, "Citizen Candy Man" at this year's Independent Feature Project Market (formerly the Independent Feature Film Market) in Manhattan (September.)  The film was shot on my equipment and I was a co-producer and a part of the ensemble cast.  Before the Market, anyone who wishes can view the film at: http://youtube.com/results?search=citizen+candy+man&search_type=search_videos&search=Search

I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Hi Jasper Ralph,

Yup, that's me, friendly pia, ;-)

>I was happy to read after this email was in my in-basket for a while

OK, you have me at a disadvantage. What email in particular?

The one where I was borrowing 5M$ to fund my new web 2.0 venture. If that one, cash or check would be fine. :-)

Seriously, I'm always doing something. Recently, I reached out to Jaspers on Execunet, LinkedIn, and via the MCalumDB. I "do" a dump truck full of email regularly so I can't even guess, especially if it's old. I've been annoying my fellow Jasper since 1998 on a regular basis. Give me a little clue, so I can babble more intelligently.

The fact that you came in on my "political" email seems to say that if it's not too old, I was on my soapbox about some political issue or another. But that's just a guess.

No, this is the first time that I have heard from you. That's of interest to me since I think I've bothered every Jasper at one time or another.

I've used MSFT Publisher, two hosting vendor's packages, NVU, Linkedin, handcrafted HTML with notepad, and handcrafted html with editpad pro. Some sites that are no longer around were created with café press, Open Office, Freemind, Google, and WebForge. In short, what ever suited my whimsy at the moment.

I'm not the exemplar that you want to follow for a good website. I was toying with the idea of offshoring my web work to India via Jasper MBA who was trying to start up a business that way. But, I forgot his name.

>>

Did you ever hear of Jasper Jottings? http://www.jasperjottings.com  That's "mine". I run two yahoo groups for alums. And, in my spare time, I network with lots of them.

I brag that I have the largest database of Jaspers outside of the College.

Don't worry it's encrypted. And, I don't have ssns ... yet.

BTW, you were cited in a past issue of Jottings.

My classmate Dickie L ratted you out!

But, somehow, you flew under the radar until now.

How may I help you?

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

http://tinyurl.com/ln5gg

"Nearly a quarter of people surveyed said they had zero close friends with whom to discuss personal matters. More than 50 percent named two or fewer confidants, most often immediate family members"

Luckily, thanks to the cic,  I have about 1500 of my closest friends to share my rantings with.

Now how do I change the world? One opinion at a time.

I challenge you to connect with one fellow Jasper. Sure it was easier at the College. But, now, pick one and connect. Then there "be a lot less lonely people in the world". Hmmm!?!

And that’s the last word.
Curmudgeon
