In pictures: Underground children

In hiding

Blink and you will miss the underground children in Ethiopia's capital city.

They live in tunnels, sewers and drainage holes, hidden beneath Addis Ababa's teeming streets.

They move from one makeshift shelter to the next, chased away by police or the rivers of water and refuse that flow when the rains come.

Growing up amidst the traffic, they learn to hustle at a young age seeking change or selling small items to drivers at traffic lights.

I find it hard to believe that in a free society this would happen. It has to be the government's fault. We have Jasper Brother Flynn in the front lines there. Yell if you would like to skip a donut for him to make a difference.

Hi John,

Just a note {extraneous deleted} … … Daniel Tigest in our Addis Hope program. His folks are lucky if they can earn the proverbial dollar a day as day laborers – what my late Irish father used to do in the “shape up” on the docks of NY.

{extraneous deleted} … … I haven’t been in contact for quite a while. We had to shut down the program for a week because of political unrest in the city. I, myself was caught up in a maze while driving home to my community one day. Most of the streets were barricaded but I finally persuaded a Methodist clinic to let me park my office car and was able to walk the rest of the way. I was more concerned about the safety of my car than myself since it’s the only one I’ll have in my lifetime, while I’m very good at dodging, having grown up on the streets of NYC.  Forty killed and thousands arrested but relative peace at the moment. Keep us in your prayers.

Fraternally,
Br. Greg Flynn

He can make your lost donut meaningful. And, I don't think he has a Rolls Royce. ;-)

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

MURRAY, JAMES J.

MURRAY -- James J. Of Bronxville, New York and Londonderry, Vermont. Passed away peacefully on June 18, 2006 at age 67, following a long and heroic battle with cancer.

Loving husband, father, and son. Graduate of Bishop Loughlin High School Class of 1957, Manhattan College Class of 1961, and Fordham Law School Class of 1964. An accomplished attorney who practiced in New York for over 40 years, his varied career included positions at Legal Aid, a Wall Street firm, and, ultimately, a smaller practice where he applied his skills to what fulfilled him most; advocating for the laborer and the vulnerable individual. Jim was a man of formidable intellect and legal acumen, but his chief legacy to his family and to those who knew him is a model of inexhaustible selflessness, unshakable devotion to family and friends, humility, and Christian manhood. Words are an inadequate medium for expressing the magnitude of his loss to his family and to the scores he touched throughout his life. Though he left us too soon, we are immeasurably richer for having been a part of his life. He lives on in all of us. Jim is survived by his wife of 34 years, Mary Jane Riordan Murray, his children John, Elizabeth, and James, his mother, Belinda Murray, his brother Peter and his wife, and many beloved friends and relatives. Wake Wednesday, June 21 at McGrath Funeral Home, Bronxville, New York from 2-4 and 7-9 P.M. Funeral Mass Thursday, June 22 at the Church of St. Joseph, Bronxville, New York, at 11 A.M.

HEADLINE: NASSAU; Development, zoning key election issues
BYLINE: BY WILLIAM MURPHY. STAFF WRITER

Today's election for trustee in Rockville Centre could shift power away from incumbent Mayor Eugene Murray and his Home Rule Party in a battle over development in the village of 25,000 residents.

A Murray ally, James Sutton, gave up his trustee position in March after moving to Pennsylvania, creating an open seat on the five-member board.

Emilio Grillo is making his first run for elective office on the Home Rule Party line, but he says he will be an independent voice, not necessarily allied with the mayor.

He is opposed by Suzanne Murphy Sullivan of the Residents' Voice Party. Sullivan is a recent past president of her party and seeks to join fellow members and incumbent trustees Andrew Karamouzis and Jeanne Farnan Mulry to form a majority of three on the board.

"There is one issue, and that is overdevelopment," Sullivan said in a recent interview. "About 95 percent of our board's votes are unanimous, but when we do disagree, it's often over development."

She and members of Residents' Voice favor repeal of a 2003 law that allows multiple-family dwellings in the business district and are at odds with Murray over the number of units allowed per acre in any new development. Residents' Voice wants lower density and less development.

Grillo expressed caution on the issue, citing his own battle after moving to the village in 1999 with a neighbor who wanted to build "a rather enormous house" next door.

"We were able to defeat that. About three years later, it was scaled down 35 percent. You can't stop all development, but there has to be controls on it," Grillo said.

Grillo, 40, is married and has three children. He has a law degree from St. John's University School of Law and works at a law firm in lower Manhattan.

Sullivan, 36, is married and has three children. She has a bachelor's degree in government, politics and urban affairs from Manhattan College and left her job as an assistant vice president of a securities firm to care for her children.

Voting is from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. at nine spots in the village.

Sullivan is next trustee
By Jacquie Rath
June 22, 2006

The residents of Rockville Centre have spoken: In Tuesday's special election, they elected Suzanne Murphy Sulivan village trustee. Sullivan garnered 2,544 votes, and Emilio Grillo collected 2,339.

Sullivan will fill the seat vacated by Jim Sutton when he left the state and resigned from his position last March. She will be sworn in at the Board of Trustees' organizational meeting July 10, and will immediately begin serving the remaining year of Sutton's term.

The campaign was heated at times, pitting neighbor against neighbor, as evidenced by the lawn sign displays. The main points of contention during the campaign were future development in the village, parking challenges in town, and the manner in which current trustees conduct themselves at meetings and with other members of the board.

"It was a tough fight, but we fought clean and the residents of Rockville Centre saw it," said Sullivan. "I'm looking forward to bringing positivity to the board, and the residents look forward to that, and expect it."

During her campaign, Sulivan pledged to repeal the 2003 multi-family legislation that permits construction of residential housing anywhere in the village's business district. She also vowed to continued to fight developers who are interested in building large-scale projects in Rockville Centre. And she has said that she would look for creative solutions to the parking issues that plague villagers and visitors alike.

Sullivan, a lifelong resident of Rockville Centre, attended Hewitt and St. Agnes elementary schools and graduated from Sacred Heart Academy. She went on to earn a degree in government, politics and urban affairs from Manhattan College.

Afterward she worked for both Merrill Lynch and Morgan Stanley, and was a licensed securities broker. She eventually left the business world to raise a family in Rockville Centre.

She lives on Rockville Avenue with her husband, Rob, and their children, Robert, Caitlin and Patrick. Sullivan is a member of the St. Agnes Mothers' Club and coaches soccer as well as the St. Agnes swim team.

In June 2007, a general election will be held for this seat as well as the trustee seat currently held by Wayne Lipton, as well as for the office of mayor.

{JR:  Congrats to Jasper Sullivan. By the way, I think the Dean of English want to speak to you about "positivity". Pay him no mind, I "r an injineer", know lots about electrons, and understood exactly what you meant.  }

Leaders & Success
Bringing Out Their Very Best
BY MICHAEL MINK
FOR INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY
Posted 6/16/2006

John Wooden led by example — and what an example he set.

He's considered the greatest college basketball coach ever, and some call him the greatest coach in any sport.

Today, Wooden says his record 10 NCAA men's basketball championships at the University of California, Los Angeles, were the result of his team working its hardest. But the titles were also a result of the values he imparted to his players.

He spoke to them about morality, compassion and decency for all people in life, and lived his words. He talked about hard work on and off the basketball court, and showed them how to do it. His players knew whatever he asked of them was exactly what he demanded of himself. Wooden had what every leader strives for: credibility.

One of only three men to be inducted into the basketball Hall of Fame as both a player and a coach, Wooden received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bush in 2003.

"A leader's most powerful ally is his or her own example. Leaders don't just talk about doing something; they do it. Swen Nater (a former UCLA player) told me once, 'Coach, you walked the walk.' He meant that I led by example," Wooden said in the newly released book: "How To Be Like Coach Wooden: Life Lessons From Basketball's Greatest Leader," by Pat Williams with David Wimbish.

"Coach was a great coach because he was a great humanitarian. You'd run through a wall for him because you believed in him," said Ed Ehlers, who played for Wooden in high school.

That's not to say Wooden, at 95 a living legend, was always the kindly, grandfatherly figure he's seen as today. As a coach he was tough on his players, strict and demanding, but he could be because they knew he cared about them. "In all my studying of coaching and leadership, if players know that you care about you them as a person, they will go all out for you," said Williams, a pro basketball executive, in a recent interview.

Wooden didn't raise his voice or use profanity. He believed the foundation to winning games was preparation in the form of well-organized practices and drills, along with superbly conditioned players. He also insisted players watch what they ate and eschew drinking and smoking.

Wooden wasn't interested in imposing his will on players, but rather in bringing out the best in people. He instilled in his players the mantra to perfect the smallest details and master the basics. Repetition, he believed, was the key to mastery.

"Little things done well is probably the greatest secret to success," Wooden said. "Keep things as simple as you can, and you have a chance to do them better. I'd always rather do a few things well."

He didn't rely on fear to motivate his players, but instead tried to spark their pride in a job well done. He offered encouraging words, analysis and advice after every game and practice.

"There are coaches out there who have won championships with a dictator approach," Wooden said. "I had a different philosophy. I didn't want to be a dictator to my players or assistant coaches or managers. For me, concern, compassion and consideration were always priorities of the highest order."

Wooden never strayed from the classroom teacher he'd once been, and has never stopped learning. He even took psychology courses at UCLA in order to better help him reach his players. His goal wasn't just to help them improve on the court; more important, he wanted to help them be better people.

"I believe effective leaders are, first and foremost, good teachers," Wooden said. "We are in the educational business. Whether in class or on the court, my job was the same: to effectively teach those under my supervision how they could perform to the best of their ability in ways that best served the goals of the team.

"I believe the same is true for productive leaders in any organization. We must get our players to believe that the best way to improve the team is to improve themselves, and, in doing so, we must not lose sight of the fact that the same principle holds true in regard to the coach."

Wooden measures success not by his championships and icon status, but by the apex of his famed "Pyramid of Success" diagram.

"Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming," he wrote.

The shaping of Wooden's values began with his parents. His father taught him to always be true to yourself and help others. Although the family lived in a part of southern Indiana that had plenty of racial intolerance, Wooden's father taught him that all people are equal.

Those lessons showed in full flower years later, when Wooden was told he couldn't bring Clarence Walker, a black bench player from his Indiana State University team, to the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletic tournament in Kansas City, Mo., in 1948. Wooden told tournament officials, 'If I can't bring Clarence, we're not coming.' "

Soon news of Wooden's stand reached officials at Manhattan College, the tournament favorite and biggest draw, and they decided to back him and withdraw also. Tournament officials then backed down, and both teams and Walker played.

At a 1962 coaches' convention in Louisville, Ky., Wooden skipped the banquet when the hotel refused to allow the black coaches attending to eat there. He instead dined with them at a "colored" restaurant.

Although he retired from college ball, Wooden never really left coaching. Today, he gives about 30 motivational speeches a year to different organizations.

He still takes time to learn and reflect. He delves into books on his two favorite historical figures, President Lincoln and Mother Teresa. He enjoys reciting long poetic verse.

He lives by Mother Teresa's credo — that a life is important only in that it is lived for others. To that end, Wooden speaks at length with the multitudes of everyday people he meets daily who are just hoping to learn something from him.

And he still displays the same enthusiasm for life as he did as a coach.

"Regardless of whether you're leading as a teacher, coach, parent or businessperson, you must have enthusiasm," he said.

"Without it, you cannot be industrious to the full level of your ability. With it, you stimulate others to higher and higher levels of achievement."

HEADLINE: Nevins pitches in NCAA tourney

It was quite a run for Matt Nevins and the Manhattan College baseball team.

Nevins pitched twice for the Jaspers during the NCAA Division I Lincoln regional in Lincoln, Neb.

The Beacon High School graduate threw two scoreless innings to pick up the save for Manhattan in a 6-4 victory over the University of San Francisco, earning the Jaspers a spot in the Lincoln regional final against perennial national power Miami.

In the final, the sophomore received the starting nod on the mound and left the game in the sixth inning when Miami took a 5-4 lead. Nevins allowed five runs, four earned, on eight hits and struck out one in his team's 10-4 setback.

Nevins completed the season with a 3-6 record and 3.44 earned run average for the Jaspers. In 55 innings, he allowed 62 hits, walked 24 and struck out 47.

Manhattan finished the 2006 season with a 34-23 record and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference title. The Jaspers upset top seed and host Nebraska in the first game of the NCAA regional.

Ferddie-san:

Glad you got my e-mail from last night. I was sending from my mobile telephone & was afraid it got "spammed-out" on your side.

 {extraneous deleted}

Any connections to fellow Jaspers in/around Asia will be welcomed, and I would certainly appreciate the invite to access jasperjottings.com.

On the serious side, one of the things that helps keep me sane is counting the small miracles that occur every day. Sometimes things happen from out of the blue that have major affects in my thinking. Your e-mail contact may be one of these occurrences.

I have been wrestling with a problem here for more than one year. We're having trouble trying to identify/hire bi-lingual (Japanese-English) environmental engineers & scientists who are willing to work/re-locate to Japan. Are there any resources available through MC (internal or external) that you might be able to recommend for recruiting purposes?

Please feel free to mention me in your blogs/newsletters. I can provide any additional information that you need to craft a short piece, including life & working in Japan (definitely NOT the U.S.)

I leave for Shanghai this Saturday & will be back in Tokyo by Tuesday next. I do get to HKG on a fairly regular basis so contacts with other "gaijin" would be appreciated.

Best regards & keep up the good work!

Kevin

The Manhattan College Alumni Association and the James Keating O'Neill Foundation are proud to announce that the 6th Annual James Keating O'Neill Memorial Golf Classic/Long island Golf Outing will be held on Monday, September 18th.  This year's event will again be held at the Hamlet Wind Watch Golf & Country Club in Hauppauge, Long Island.

Last year's event raised over $20,000 and brought the scholarship fund to over $200,000 at Manhattan College.  This is due to the generosity of the family and friends of James and fellow alumni of Manhattan College.

More info on this year's event will be posted online www.jkogolf.org.  In July online registration will be available as well.  We hope to see you on September 18th!

Subject: Sign the Voters Pledge for Peace!

Spread the word!

A majority of Americans now want to 'Bring the Troops Home.'

I just signed the Voters Pledge at www.VotersForPeace.us. In order to end the occupation of Iraq and stop future wars of aggression we need to let politicians know that we will not vote for them if they vote for war. VotersForPeace.US is an effort to organize and make visible the Peace Vote as a powerful new voting block. The Peace Vote is now large enough to speak with a united voice of conviction which candidates and incumbent politicians CANNOT AFFFORD TO IGNORE!

VotersForPeace is trying to get 2 million voters to sign its Peace Pledge in time for the 2006 elections. The Pledge is a statement of support for peace candidates: "who publicly oppose wars of aggression."

Please visit the Voters Pledge at http://www.votersforpeace.us/signUp.jsp to sign on and help spread the word!

Thank you,
Douglas

{JR:  Well, I don't think it will be very effective. As a voting block, peace advocates are mia. See like the "war on terror", the "war on drugs", and the "war on poverty", so to "peace" is a misnomer. Don't get me wrong, I am "for" peace. But the politicians are hoodwinking us at every election. "peace at any cost" is associate with Neville Chamberlein. So, you're gonna have hard time getting Joe Sixpack to back that idea. I think you can have a grazzion signature on all the petitions you want and nothing will change. I think that people see "peace" and think left wing socialism. I don't have a good answer about how to move the country. I'd hack at the roots. Cut off the money and any war is hard to fight. I'd attack the Federal Reserve and its inflation tax that allows the Gubamint to fight wars. IMHO.  }

Subject: Hi from a long way and a long time ago

Dear John,

I received your missive from the blue.  I graduated from Manhattan in '68 (BS), '78 (BEChE), and '83 (MEChE)....and Fordham in "69 (MS).  Being from the class of '68, I have looked (somewhat secretively, I suppose) for classmates who might be around.  Not many, I am afraid.  So when I got your email on LinkedIn, I figured I would take the opportunity to say Hello.  I am currently in Cebu, Philippines running my own business (RO water sales, and hopefully health supplement beverages) as a start-up company.  We've been open just about 4 months, and I should have known this would be a 24/7 business.

I retired from Estee Lauder in January of this year, and left the US in February.  I previously worked for E.I. DuPont, Colgate Palmolive, and Uncle Sam (Major USAF Viet Nam era).  Before I retired, I worked just 5 days a week.  Now I work 7!  Well, be careful what you ask for, you sometimes get it!  My particular specialties are process engineering (all types and the more exotic the better....more fun!), chemistry and biology...I am setting up an analytical site at my factory.  I will turn 60 in November of this year, and this stuff keeps me feeling young.  If you or anyone you might know can use information or a hand with something I can help with, just let me know.  As a fellow Jasper, you are an instant friend.  I wish you the best, and once in a while, if you wish, drop a quick email to me!

My best regards,

Jerry Rotando

Hi Jerry,

I wish it was skill but I’m just blundering around.

Your risk taking is impressive. I know from having been in my own business twice and I know how tough it is. I can’t imagine it in a foreign country.

I’ll keep you in mind.

Also, I run a weekly email ezine called Jasper Jottings, I’ll send you an invite.

With your permission, I’d like to put this in my weekly Jottings.

Regards,
Fjohn68

Hi John,

You certainly may (as long as it doesn't result in 50 requests for donations!  hahaha!).  And I look forward to seeing your ezine!  Risk taking is a lot easier when your almost 60...what the hell??  The worst that can happen is I wind up broke and on welfare back in the states.  That's pretty common for old codgers like me, so I suppose I am better off so far!  I will keep in touch periodically, John.  Again, let me know if you think there is any way I could be helpful to you or a friend.  And if you ever get the urge to go banging around on the other side of the world, you have a friend in the Philippines!

My best always,
Jerry

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

http://tinyurl.com/jk6me

VA to offer vets free credit monitoring

Heard 'bout another episode of "your government at work for you protecting and serving". This one is the new free credit monitoring service for all vets. What a great benefit magnificently magnamouly provided by your Federal Government. At taxpayers' expense, of course. Why? Cause the gubamint lost all the records.

John often repeats a challenge from some where to name a government program that works. Any program, subprogram, anything!

Does anyone REALIZE that identity theft is IMPOSSIBLE without the gubamint mark of the devil – the "social security insurance" number? That number is the key to your gubamint number! And you can find it easily exposed around or buy it from a broker.

And, don't you think that calling a ponzi scheme "insurance" should violate some truth in labeling law? Oh that's right laws apply to the peons not the royalty!!

And that’s the last word.
Curmudgeon
