Bay Shore soldier returns winning lottery ticket
BY ZACHARY R. DOWDY
Newsday Staff Writer
May 30, 2006, 12:10 AM EDT

***Begin Quote***

Boniberger, a sergeant with Bravo Co. First Battalion 69 based in Bay Shore, and his girlfriend, Marnie Hall, found a bunch of tickets on a counter in the store on Brentwood Road but couldn't locate Mary Ann Doerrbecker, whose name was on the back of the winning ticket. She knew she had won but didn't know she had misplaced it.

Boniberger contacted the Third Precinct, whose detectives called Doerrbecker, of Bay Shore, and arranged a meeting at the precinct where Boniberger could hand over the ticket.

***End Quote***

Ahh, I love “honest people” stories. But you know that. Maybe it was the long forgotten good nun who told her charges that by returning lost property that we were emulating the Good Shepard. Maybe it was the long forgotten good brother who graded us on “respect the rights of others”. Maybe it was the sermons casting thieves into hell. Who knows why? But I do know that my fellow alums would not be a tempted as I. That’s why I really never want to “find” anything. That’s easier. And, if I do find something, I’ll be like the Deal Or No Deal contestant. Small amounts only. See I know I’m no saint. But is inspiring to know there are some out there.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

: Cellphones in School? Yes No

To the Editor:

As a graduating senior from Manhattan College's School of Education, I can attest to the annoyance of cellphones. Last fall, I taught in two New York City public schools in the Bronx. Inappropriate cellphone use was a common distraction in class.

Students' cellphones would ring right in the middle of my lessons, forcing me to refocus their attention and wasting valuable time.

And much as Jesse Scaccia said, they are status symbols for youths much as cars are for adults.

Parents are naive to think that their children will use their cellphones only in times of emergency. Little do they know that the device they believed would be beneficial to them is actually hindering their children's ability to learn.

Then, congratulations are definitely in order and extended to the beautiful and lovely Lauren Ayesha Williams (daughter of Evan and Betsy Williams of Red Bones Blues Café fame) upon her graduation from the Manhattan College, New York, with a dual degree in psychology and sociology.

Dears, it was a family do too as mom and dad, Evan and Betsy Williams, along with daughter Enola Williams, joined family friends Claudia Robinson and John Zadie, Rowley Ramirez in the Big Apple for the occasion, with the celebrations continuing way after the officialdom was done and over with at Manhattan College.

Congrats all around and champagne toasts, y'all!

HEADLINE: 'Hank the Hammer' sports tough-guy reputation
BYLINE: By BEN WHITE
DATELINE: NEW YORK

While playing American football at Dartmouth college in the late 1960s, Hank Paulson earned the nickname "Hank the Hammer" for his bruising style of play.

Mr Paulson was small for an offensive tackle, just 6ft 1in and 198lb. But according to a record of the school's all-time football greats, Mr Paulson played with "near-flawless style" on teams that won 23 games out of 27 over his three years as a starter.

The nickname fits Mr Paulson's reputation on Wall Street as well, where he is both feared and admired. A Christian Scientist who neither drinks nor smokes, he took the helm of Goldman Sachs after its initial public offering in 1999 and turned what was already a blue-chip bank into a global player with a dominant investment bank and a powerhouse trading desk. He also emerged, as many Goldman executives before him, as an ambassador for Wall Street, meeting political leaders around the world.

Mr Paulson also ledthe charge to oust Richard Grasso, the New York Stock Exchange chief executive, when Mr Grasso's salary became an embarrassment.

"The world looks at the Goldman chief executive as probably Wall Street's chief spokesman," said Charles Geisst, Manhattan College business historian. "And if anything, Mr Paulson increased Goldman's visibility."

Mr Paulson earned more than Dollars 38m in overall compensation last year; as Treasury secretary his salary wil be Dollars 171,900.

Mr Paulson grew up on a farm in Burlington, Illinois and dreamed of becoming a forest ranger. But after Dartmouth, he chose Harvard Business School. He then spent two years in Washington in staff jobs under President Richard Nixon. But he kept his roots in Illinois, buying part of his family's farm and building a house where he and his wife raised two children and a menagerie of animals. "It's hard to think of an animal I'm not interested in," Mr Paulson told Fortune in 2004.

He has remained an ardent environmentalist, serving as chairman of the Nature Conservancy.

Mr Paulson ran Goldman's investment bank from Chicago for several years before moving to New York in 1994 to become president and chief operating officer. Goldman's IPO brought him vast wealth but Mr Paulson has never sold a Goldman share for personal gain and spends more time looking for birds in Central Park than hitting the Wall Street social circuit.

At Goldman, Mr Paulson is known for extreme bluntness in meetings, his long voicemails and fierce dedication to corporate clients.

His dedication helped Goldman cement its reputation as the top mergers and acquisition shop on Wall Street. But he also attended to other parts of the firm, grooming Lloyd Blankfein, a trading specialist, as his successor. Mr Blankfein's rise reflects a Goldman culture that Mr Paulson ardently championed during 34 years at the firm: whoever puts up the biggest numbers wins.

ONLINE EDITION FRIDAY May 26, 2006
Manhasset Press
American Legion Post 304 Announces Parade Plans

John F. Keitz, commander of the Manhasset Post 304, American Legion and Anthony W. Buzzitta, parade chairman, have announced the Parade Order and schedule for the traditional Manhasset Memorial Day Parade, and for the attendant memorial services. All Manhasset residents, their families and friends are invited to join the legion in this remembrance of the great sacrifices of American heroes. The theme of the parade this year, "Manhasset Remembers our Servicemen and Servicewomen," is a reminder that while Memorial Day is meant to honor all of our deceased veterans, we wish to remember in particular this year the servicemen and women from Manhasset. In addition to those honored at our Gold Star Memorial and the 21 Manhasset veterans that died in the past year, we want to remember the young men and women from Manhasset who are currently serving on active duty around the world to preserve our freedom. We honor the members of the 301st Area Support Group, 77th Regional Readiness Command from Fort Totten, New York, which Post 304, and indeed, the entire Manhasset community, adopted while they are deployed in Iraq last year. We are pleased that a contingent from the 301st will lead the Manhasset Memorial Day Parade.

The legion will place American flags on the graves of veterans in local cemeteries and will participate with other legion posts to decorate veterans' graves at Pinelawn National Cemetery, in preparation for the Memorial Day ceremonies. Memorial wreaths will also be placed at the five memorial monuments in Manhasset.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, May 28, at the Church of St. Mary, 1300 Northern Boulevard, Manhasset at 10:30 a.m. in honor of our war dead. All are urged to attend and join with the legion in remembrance of the great sacrifice of these citizen soldiers.

On Memorial Day, Monday May 29, the parade will start promptly at 10 a.m. There are over 40 organizations scheduled to march including six bands and more than 30 pieces of fire apparatus and other vehicles.

The route of the parade will be along Plandome Road from Plandome Court to Memorial Place, with excellent public viewing along the entire length. Those planning to march in the parade are expected to be present and ready to march in their designated assembly areas no later than 9:30 a.m.

The division commander will be William Martin.

The Fifth Division, which forms on Heights Road facing west, consists of the Plandome Fire Department.

The Sixth Division, which assembles on Summit Drive facing east, provides the parade climax - the Manhasset-Lakeville Fire Department with the Nassau County Police Department Pipe Band led by the commissioners of the fire district.

The parade will conclude in formation at Memorial Field, where a special area will be designated for public viewing of the memorial services. The program will begin with the National Anthem, played by the Manhasset High School Band under the direction of Randy Knudsen and Sung by Mrs. Catherine Lau.

The Reverend David Lowry, Pastor of Christ Episcopal Church, will give the Invocation. The Poppy Queen, Miss Johanna Lovecchio of Manhasset High School, will then be introduced.

John,

In your May 28th edition of Jasper Jottings you posted the obituary of Joseph P. McCarthy, who passed away on May 18th in Pompano Beach, Florida.

You didn't have Joe's class class number.

Joe was a member of Manhattan's Class of 1942.

I look forward to the "Jottings" every week. Please keep it coming.

And I am tickled when I hear that you’re still reading them. That just makes my week. To think that people actual read this stuff is it’s own reward. I can see it now. When I am standing on the dais at the College to get my honorary PhD in  Humane Letter, (It was the Humane thing to do to put this Letter out everyone’s misery), I’ll say that the readers made me do it. Ok, wake up, do you really think the College likes this effort? Nah, just stirs up the alums and make them difficult to put the arm on for contributions. I hear that they get a lot of “why can’t you do something like that for us alums”. Followed by “shut up and sign the check or we’ll revoke your diploma” or so I’m told. }

Subject: something to add to the debate over the FDA

Dear CIC,

Just something to add to the debate over the FDA between Curmudgeon and Jasper Stebbins.  Are you aware that during the last days of the Clinton Administration political pressure was put on the FDA to "fast track" approval of the abortion drug RU-486?  This drug was indeed approved and has been responsible for the deaths of at least 7 women in the USA besides countless children.  Critical studies of this abortifacient were ignored because the powers that were wanted it on the market.  Government science, anyone?

{JR:  Now Kevin, we just got them calmed down. We were going to have a week without the FDA! And you go and stir the pot. By The Way, you should know that the Democratic FDA, as opposed to the current Republican FDA, was just there protecting us all. When we have the Libertarian FDA, people will just be dying on the streets because there will be no one in the office “protecting” us. ALSO, I felt I had been transported to the National Spelling Bee, …abortifacient” … may I have the Language of Origin please?  Remember I r an injineer and we don’t do so good with the big words! Now if you had said 11-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-17-hydroxy-13-methyl-17-prop-1-ynyl-1,2,6,7,8,11,12,13,14,15,16,17-dodecahydrocyclopenta[a]phenanthren-3-one or even C29H35NO2, we’d have immediately know you meant the class of drugs exemplified by mifepristone, a synthetic steroid with potent antiprogestational and antiglucocorticoid properties.  (By the way, thanks for stirring the pot. It helps to have something interesting to report.)}

Subject: Hello

Hi John:

I hope this finds you and your wife well.  The last Jottings stimulated me to drop you a note.

I was interested to see that John M. Fahey, president and C.E.O. of National Geographic, who recently received an honorary degree from Manhattan, is a Manhattan College grad.  Over the past decade or so, I have been disappointed to find that National Geographic and Smithsonian magazine have lost their focus on History as we were taught it and the natural sciences.  Instead, they have increasingly become outlets for P.C. mythology cloaked in the new "Social Sciences" as deconstructed and revised by Boomer academics like Princeton's Elaine Pagels, the most avid proponent off Gnosticism.  I have stopped subscribing to both.

However, what particularly struck me in the context of his presidency was the National Geographic's recent promotion of "The Lost Gospel: the Quest for the Gospel of Judas Iscariot" by Herbert Krosney, published by the Society.  According to the book, it turns out that Judas and Jesus were such good friends that Jesus selected Judas to hand him over so that his guise as a man could be shed to reveal his eternal spirit.  In that way, he was actually the most favored of the twelve. This Gnostic Gospel is really not new and has been discredited by bona fide scholars.

I'm not sure if the fact that it was found in a jar in the Egyptian desert or the commercial possibilities that made it a National Geo must.

Best,
Peter E. Dans '57

{JR:  Wife still having problems but I’m well. Thanks. I am glad that you find it “provoking”. I have yet to figure out what the criteria for being honored by the College. I’m sure a big dination can’t hurt one’s chances. I would hope that it might be that you’ve accomplished something that can inspire everyone to try a little harder, work a little smarter, and yes dig a little deeper into the pocketbook to support an organization that awards or rewards people like the honoree. I do think that what passes for excellence in life these days (i.e., achievement; education; scholarship; leadership; innovation; Absolute Good of Plato) is a pale imitation of what has been the standard of the past. I can’t put my finger on it, but if I had to guess it has been a transition from American Pride of Accomplishment to a European Socialist Entitlement Mindset. America, that used to be a lot of things, is now a politically correct effete crowd of welfare recipients. Sad to say, Nat Geo which I too used to read avidly has just mirrored society.}

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

At the risk of throwing more gasoline on the old FDA campfire, I rushed this in:

Why Is the Best Sunscreen Blocked by FDA?
America Denied Sun Shield That Other Countries Enjoy
John Stossel

***Begin Quote***

June 17, 2005 — We think of July and August as the peak of summer, but when it comes to sunburn, now is the peak. Next Tuesday, June 21st, is the longest day of the year, when the sun is highest in the sky, so it's now that the sun does the most damage.

But even though dermatologists say Mexoryl is the best, you cannot legally buy it in the United States. It's illegal, because the Food and Drug Administration won't approve it. They won't even say why. The FDA is charged with making sure no drug is sold unless the government is convinced it's safe and effective. Dermatologists think it's just stuck in the bureaucracy. It routinely takes 12 to 15 years for a drug to get approval. After an approved drug — Vioxx, for example — gets bad publicity as a health risk, the FDA gets particularly cautious.

Everyone is always telling us, protect yourself from the sun, but then the government won't give us permission to have the best sunscreen?

Give me a break.

***End Quote***

Yup, that’s Jasper Stebbins’ FDA protecting us, like a good Mommy Government agency should. After all we are to dumb to choose what to put in or in this case on our little tushies. No, I’d say that there probably hasn’t been the right pay off to the correct or both political parties. Wake up, the gummamint isn’t your friend or your servant. It’s become your oppressor. Your just a slave to it.

What will it take for people to realize just what a terrible master it is?

And that’s the last word.
Curmudgeon
