SPORTS: Yes or No?     Answer: No.

By a vote of 4 to .5, I’m going to drop the weekly sports coverage. Sports junkies can get their fix at the MC official site and I’ll blog the external sports stories over at http://jasperjottings.blogspot.com/ where they can be read online or via one of the many RSS tools. If anyone cares? I think it is a loss but I tire of it for zero return. Fight the wars one can win.

Lost an iPod or wallet? Look for it online
ANDREW RYAN Associated Press

{Begin Quote}

BOSTON - Maureen Silliman felt her empty pocket and gulped: Her new $300 iPod must have bounced out as she ran to catch a train. While she sobbed, her boyfriend suggested a message on the lost-and-found section of Craigslist, an online bazaar of classified ads.

"No," the 24-year-old Silliman said. "Nobody would ever turn in an iPod."

Her boyfriend posted the message anyway. Within 24 hours, Silliman's iPod was back.

In an increasingly cynical world, there are still places where people try to do the right thing. Everyday on Internet message boards, honest folks post notes about valuables they found: cash, bank cards, diamond bracelets, engagement rings, wedding bands, digital cameras, and even a cockatoo valued at $1,200.

In turn, when there is no place left to look for something missing, the desperate sometimes take the longest of longshots and look online themselves.

Occasionally, it works for both sides. People such as Silliman get back their iPod, still loaded with Radio Head and Broken Social Scene.

The impulse to be honest doesn't surprise Lawrence M. Hinman, the director of The Values Institute at the University of San Diego.

"I think we perceive ourselves as being much worse than we actually are," Hinman said. "There are people who live lives of quiet honesty."

Take Monique Peddle, 48, in Hollywood, Fla., who posted a note online when she found a diamond studded gold bracelet that she could have just as easily slipped quietly in her pocket. Or Blake Facente, 30, who also turned to Craigslist when he discovered a Dell Inspiron laptop leaning against his building in San Francisco.

The same for Agnes Satoorian, 27, who climbed into a cab in Boston last month and found a pricey digital camera that another rider had left behind.

"I know that pain," said Satoorian, who had recently lost her own camera loaded with sentimental pictures. "I decided I would try to make it right for someone."

Craig Newmark, the namesake and founder of Craigslist, said that the company added the lost-and-found message board in March 2003 after they noticed a proliferation of people looking for things that they were missing.

"The culture of trust is key, and the fact is that we work really hard at that," said Newmark, 53, who now has Web sites in 190 cities that boast more than 10 million users a month.

That means everyday there are new lost-and-found posts. Like the drawer in a school secretary's office where missing scarves wait to be claimed, the message boards accumulate a disparate collection of goods.

Some are outlandish.

The three teeth - including a molar with a filing that needed replacing - pick up in downtown Honolulu. The $100 bill found on a sidewalk on the Las Vegas strip. The man in Copenhagen who lost his ex-wife. Or the New Yorker who misplaced her clean-shaven cowboy and implored: "If found please send him to Queens."

In the lost column in Dublin, Ireland, a post under the heading, "$1 Million US reward," has a link to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted poster for Boston fugitive mobster James "Whitey" Bulger.

"I just want him caught," said the post's author, reached through e-mail, who declined to elaborate or give his name.

Other posts are authentic, and even touching.

The 39-year-old woman in Frankfurt, Germany, looking for her birth mother (Bridgitte Siglinde Stolba). The Homestead, Fla., mother searching for a lost dog named Sparky that detects her 17-year-old epileptic son's seizures and barks for help. The 1-carat diamond engagement ring that slipped off a woman's finger in the hills outside Berkeley, Calif.

Success of the Lost and Found is difficult to measure. Craigslist does not track its sites, and the free posting are only valid for 30 days.

But as stories about triumphs like Silliman's iPod circulate, more people keep playing the odds.

Last Fourth of July, scuba diver Stephen Klink found a solid platinum men's wedding band buried in sand beneath 30 feet of water off Cape Cod. Klink, 36, recently posted a note on the Boston-area Craigslist.

"It's a long shot, but I figured it's worth a try," Klink said from his home in Hillsdale, N.J. "Some married guy somewhere is getting whopped on because he lost his wedding ring."

{End Quote}

I love when the good side of human nature comes out. For my part, I don’t want to find anything too valuable. I don’t know how big a temptation I’m up to.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

John P. D'Angelo, 85, who practiced family medicine in Prince George's County for 43 years and was chief of the medical staff at Capitol Hill Hospital, died of complications of a stroke March 25 at Asbury-Solomon's Island assisted living facility in Solomons.

Dr. D'Angelo, also called "Doctor D," maintained privileges at the hospital until he retired in 1988. He also served on the board of directors of Washington Hospital Center.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., and after the death of his mother when he was 7, he grew up in New York with his father, an ear, nose and throat doctor. After graduating from Manhattan College, he moved to Washington and married his childhood sweetheart. He served in the Army during World War II and graduated from Georgetown University's medical school in 1945.

Dr. D'Angelo enjoyed reading, traveling with his family, golf and boating and fishing on Chesapeake Bay. He also enjoyed gatherings with his family and friends and good food.

His first wife, Kay D'Angelo, died in 1982. His second wife, Marjorie Dooley, died in 2001. "He never left the side of either Kay or Marge," said his son, adding Dr. D'Angelo was a devout believer in the healing power of loving others.

He loved being a doctor, often saying: "What makes a family physician special is his desire to be close to his patients. There is nothing complicated about it. You simply love what you're doing and who you are doing it for."

Dr. D'Angelo, whose office was in Suitland, moved from Upper Marlboro to Asbury in 2002.

Survivors include two children, John D'Angelo Jr. of Beaver Creek, Ohio, and Kathy D'Angelo of Boulder Creek, Calif.; three grandchildren; two sisters; and three great-grandchildren.

Barry Rohrssen took the easy way to work on his first day on the job yesterday. He got on the 1 train at Columbus Circle and took it all the way to 246th St. in the Bronx, then walked up the hill to Manhattan College.

"I had my copy of the Daily News, read it cover to cover," he said. "I was on a local."

Rohrssen, 45, knows his way around this city. The Jaspers' new basketball coach grew up in Brooklyn and attended Xaverian High School and St. Francis of Brooklyn before getting into coaching and emerging as one of the best recruiters in the country as an assistant at Pitt.

"To cop a phrase from the Wizard of Oz, 'There's no place like home,' " he said.

Rohrssen dressed appropriately for the occasion, wearing a green tie he had just purchased in Pittsburgh and an "M" pin on the lapel of his pinstriped suit.

Manhattan sprung into regional prominence in the 1990's when AD Bob Byrnes made some inspired hires, starting with Steve Lappas and continuing with Fran Fraschilla and Bobby Gonzalez. All three - who were Big East assistants - graduated to Big East head coaching vacancies.

The Jaspers' job has become one of the best stepping-stone gigs in the country. But it takes a street-smart city kid who has strong ties to the high schools and the area's powerful summer travel teams to max out its potential.

Rohrssen fits the profile.

Like Lappas, Fraschilla and Gonzalez, Rohrssen does not have any head coaching experience, so there will be a learning curve. But the formula has worked here before.

Rohrssen helped build the foundation for Pitt's nationally ranked program by opening the door for Ben Howland and then Jamie Dixon to sign local prep stars such as Chris Taft and Levance Fields of Xaverian, Ronald Ramon of All Hallows, Keith Benjamin of Mount Vernon, Mark McCarroll of Christ the King and Tyrell Biggs of Don Bosco in New Jersey.

That is what resonated with Brother Thomas Scanlan, the Manhattan president. "Did I say recruiting was the key to our success?" he said. "Our success has always been based on our ability to sign a player who is a cut above."

Manhattan should be happy Rohrssen opted for coaching over acting. He has a Screen Actor's Guild card and has appeared in movies, TV shows and commercials, including a role as an assistant detective in the movie, "Glengarry Glen Ross," which starred Al Pacino and Jack Lemmon.

"I was good friends with Mike Starr and Chazz Palminteri," he said. "I was even in Chazz's wedding.

"They just let me tag along."

Rohrssen liked acting. But he loves coaching.

He has always been a basketball junkie ever since high school. During college, he worked for Howard Garfinkel at Five-Star camp. That is where he picked up his nickname "Slice."

"I used to play in the counselors' games," he said. "The only way I would score on the outdoor courts was by slicing to the basket, so Garf named me Slice."

Rohrssen has sliced through the Big East with his recruiting pitch. If history is any gauge, he should have no problem selling Manhattan. When he was a 17-year-old senior at Xaverian in 1977, he used to go to the Garden to watch Manhattan games.

"I had a student ticket," he said. "I would start up top, then I would navigate my way behind the bench to watch (Jack) Powers coach and watch guys like Ricky Marsh and Stevie Grant. That was my first experience with Manhattan basketball and I was hooked ever since."

GRAPHIC: ROBERT SABO Barry Rohrssen puts own spin on Manhattan job and new coach looks like right fit for this school.

HEADLINE: PACHECO PICKS JASPERS
BYLINE: By KRISTIE ACKERT DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

MICHELLE PACHECO knew all along that basketball could be her ticket to college. The Bronx product kept that in mind when the recruiting process got a little crazy late last season.

She punched that ticket last weekend, signing a national letter of intent with Manhattan College.

"A lot of people told me that if I waited I might get more offers," Pacheco said. "We seriously thought about going to prep school and doing a post-graduate year.

"But I like Manhattan College and I had an offer of a scholarship in my hand. I am very happy. It's what I wanted."

A 5-8 point guard who led JFK to the PSAL semifinals this past season, Pacheco averaged 14 points a game for the Knights.

She liked the idea of being close to home, where her family and friends will be able to watch her play.

"Besides basketball, Manhattan College is also a great school," said Pacheco, who is academically qualified to play as a freshman. "I want to major in business and it's a great school for that."

Pacheco was considered one of the city's top guards. She might have improved her ranking and widened her options had she decided to attend prep school. That was a gamble she was not willing to take.

"A lot of schools said they would be interested in me if I put on more weight and spent a year in prep school," Pacheco said. "But the goal was to go to college and I had a scholarship to a good school in hand."

Pacheco chose Manhattan over Nicholls State and Stony Brook.

"I'm excited. I am going to spend all summer working out with Brittany Ray, who is going to Rutgers," Pacheco said. "We are both going to be ready for next season."

Dropping the sports coverage is fine with me especially if you can make better use of your time.  I never read any of the sports items and a while back wrote to you to recommend moving the sports coverage to the end of Jasper Jottings.  As to your non-sports coverage I enjoy reading everything you include.  Thank you for your efforts in getting Jasper Jottings produced and emailed each week.  All the best.

I really don't read most of the sports stuff.   Maybe some highlights from time to time would be helpful for the major ones.   Are there other sources for sports info, e.g. the  College Website or something posted by the athletic department that those interested could check?

Just one person's opinion, but I did want to respond.

{JR:  Thanks. I’ve acted on it. }

Hello JR

Hope you are well!

I meant to write you last you week about this, but forgot. Sorry!

I think it's fine if you leave out the sports and just put the web link. Why waste your valuable time when the information is already available online?

Hope my input is a teeny bit helpful in your decision.

Thanks for all you do.

{JR:  My thoughts precisely. I’ll blog the pointers to the non-web-able. And, point to the MC site. }

Sports:

The editor has pretty much a thankless job in the first place, so I would not put too much credit into the fact that you don't hear from people about sports items.

I am a news junky in a fashion and I am glad to see whatever appears about the college in the press, right down to obits. The fact of the matter is that the sports press is a big part of what gets said in the papers about Manhattan, at least the references to the name (and the tradition). Running sports programs is expensive, and whatever your values may be, or your priorities, those same references are a kind of payback, be it a limited one, for all the effort that goes into running those programs at the college. They also help us with recruiting and with forging that stereotypical old fogey alumni tie.

George Mason is a good college with a lot going for it. But, it was "discovered" last month by the great unwashed bulk of America because of a few fine wins for the basketball program during March Madness. Millions of dollars in publicity followed and countless opportunities to talk about what else the college has to offer.

People don't have to concentrate on the sports stuff but I for one like the fact that it is there and I can get into it when I want to. Then again, I am an ex Sports Information Director of the college, so I probably have an axe to grind in my "objective" analysis.

One way to cut down on the work may be to just show the reference and very briefly paraphrase/summarize the rest of the story, particularly if it actually has very little to do with Manhattan.

Bill McGuire, 65 Arts.

{JR:  Actually, paraphrase and edit is too time consuming. I’m going to drop the sports from the distribution. How long before some one notices and complains? }

Hi John,

I have no interest in most of the sports postings. I am interested in the men's basketball scores, and what I consider major events such as: athletic department changes, coaching changes, and team and individual accomplishments in major events such as national track meets and MAAC team championships.

Joe Yamaoka '56 BEE.

{JR:  Well, you’ll get that from the MC site. If you want the odd balls, then pick up the blog. Thanks for the input. }

I agree re  removing the sports section.  It's too much work for you.  A link to the Manhattan sports webpage might be better than the blog.

{JR:  Ahh, thanks for your learned insight, now get back to that golf course. You’re retired. Act like it. ;-) I’m jealous. Did the web and the blog solution until I tire of it.  }

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

Gatto’s speech clearly outlines what is wrong with “education” in USA today
April 3rd, 2006

http://www.masternewmedia.org/news/2006/04/03/experiential_learning_vstraditional_schooling_john.htm

Some great snips:

We live in a time of great school crisis. Our children rank at the bottom of nineteen industrial nations in reading, writing and arithmetic. At the very bottom.

AND

The truth is that schools don't really teach anything except how to obey orders.

AND

Schools were designed by Horace Mann and Barnard Sears and Harper of the University of Chicago and Thorndyke of Columbia Teachers College and some other men to be instruments of the scientific management of a mass population. Schools are intended to produce through the application of formulae, formulaic human beings whose behavior can be predicted and controlled.

AND

It is absurd and anti-life to move from cell to cell at the sound of a gong for every day of your natural youth in an institution that allows you no privacy and even follows you into the sanctuary of your home demanding that you do its "homework".

AND

At the core of this elite system of education is the belief that self-knowledge is the only basis of true knowledge. Everywhere in this system, at every age, you will find arrangements to place the child alone in an unguided setting with a problem to solve.

AND

Time for a return to Democracy, Individuality, and family.

Oh, I seee, you take my money by force (taxes) to fund an institution that doesn't work and I can't use. Good plan. Drive old people from their homes by high taxation. Drive young people to self-destruction. And, foist the dregs on the dole. Hey as long as it empowers the gumamint!

And that’s the last word.
Curmudgeon
