SPORTS: Yes or No?

In my continuing effort to spend my time wisely, I am reexamining the sports. By my watch, that is absorbing the largest about of time and I feel it delivers the least value. I get zero comments about it. No one reports on any of the events. So maybe it’s an idea whose time has past. Opinions?

I could blog the sports stories over at http://jasperjottings.blogspot.com/ where they can be read online or via one of the many RSS tools.

Does anyone care?

Cat in Germany saves baby's life
Sat Apr 15, 2006 8:30 AM ET

BERLIN (Reuters) - A cat saved the life of a newborn baby abandoned on the doorstep of a Cologne house in the middle of the night by meowing loudly until someone woke up, a police spokesman said on Saturday.

"The cat is a hero," Cologne police spokesman Uwe Beier said. "Its loud meowing got the attention of the homeowner and saved the baby from suffering life-threatening hypothermia. The homeowner opened door to see why the cat was making so much noise and discovered the newborn."

Beier said the boy was taken to hospital at 5 a.m. on Thursday, when overnight temperatures fell toward zero, and had suffered only mild hypothermia. He said there was no indication of what happened to the boy's mother.

{JR: Isn’t there something about birds, that neither sow nor reap?  And, His Eye’s on the sparrow.  Hmmm?  How much more valuable a human life. I’m not the religious type but this certainly makes an anecdotal argument for Divine Providence. }

HEADLINE: ExxonMobil, Employees, Retirees Donate More Than $2.6 Million to New York Colleges and Universities; Educational Matching Gift Grants Presented to 95 New York Institutions
DATELINE: IRVING, Texas April 14, 2006

ExxonMobil announced today that more than $2.6 million has been donated to 95 colleges and universities in New York through the ExxonMobil Foundation's 2005 Educational Matching Gift Program. ExxonMobil employees, retirees, surviving spouses and directors contributed $678,000 to New York institutions of higher education in 2005, which was matched by the ExxonMobil Foundation with more than $1.9 million in unrestricted educational grants.

Initiated in 1962, the ExxonMobil Foundation's Educational Matching Gift Program matches gifts to higher education on a 3-to-1 basis and has provided more than $323 million to higher education in the United States. This year, the program's combined contributions provided 908 colleges and universities across the country with more than $30 million. Individual donations totaled $9 million, and the ExxonMobil Foundation matched that number with an additional $21 million.

"For more than forty years ExxonMobil and its employees have demonstrated their commitment to institutions of higher education through our Matching Gifts Program," said Kenneth P. Cohen, vice president for public affairs, Exxon Mobil Corporation, and chairman, ExxonMobil Foundation. "Each year, the generosity of our employees has enabled hundreds of universities across the nation to enhance their current educational programs to achieve new levels of excellence."

Under the ExxonMobil Foundation's 2005 Educational Matching Gift Program, a donor can give up to $7,500 a year to colleges and universities with which he or she is affiliated and the Foundation matches those gifts on a 3-to-1 basis up to $22,500. The affiliation requirement is waived for gifts to the United Negro College Fund, the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and the American Indian College Fund.

ExxonMobil Foundation is the primary philanthropic arm of the Exxon Mobil Corporation in the United States. The Foundation engages in a broad range of philanthropic activities focusing on the communities where Exxon Mobil Corporation has significant operations. In addition, the Foundation supports research and dissemination on selected topics of national interest to the energy industry. Focus areas include education, health and environment. In 2005, Exxon Mobil Corporation, its divisions and affiliates, and ExxonMobil Foundation provided $133 million in contributions worldwide, with $42 million dedicated to education.

Subject: FDA

Dear Jasper John,

Have everyone Google FDA  poison 1906 and they will find ample evidence of the need for the FDA.  I again have to ask which planet Curmudgeon is occupying.  I found the article below when I Googled FDA patent medicines.  The need for the FDA was clear and remains so.   Many of the "dead old white guys" might have lived a lot longer if they'd had an FDA.  Then again maybe living young women of color might do better than most of them did. Our Constitution is under serious attack by the Bush/Cheney administration and their fellow travelers in the media and Corporations.  People will have to wake up if our Republic is to survive.

Sincerely,
Donald M Stebbins

===

THE PATENT MEDICINE MENACE

Patent medicines have had a long and ignominious history in the U. S., reaching their zenith in the late 19th century. As the population became more urban and somewhat more capitalized, a ripe target emerged for some post-industrial entrepeneurs, entrepreneurs who would thrive in a marketplace best characterized by the dictum, 'caveat emptor'. Communications had expanded, and the printed word became a crucial venue for the proliferation of patent medicines. The rise of advertising in America, not coincidentally, parallelled the rise of nostrums. At the same time, the biomedical sciences in this country were still in their infancy, and medicine was ill-equipped to deal with most diseases. An army of enterprising individuals were prepared to step in and alleviate the suffering.

Nostrums permeated American society by the late 19th century; Products appealed to exotica, the medical knowledge of Native Americans, death, religion, patriotism, mythology (a natural for this industry!), and especially new developments in science. There was nothing to stop patent medicines makers from claiming anything and putting anything in their products, clearly seen in the famous morphine- and alcohol-laced soothing syrups for teething and colicky babies. Cancer and arthritis cures, baldness remedies, bust developers, manhood restorers--wherever a need existed, patent medicine makers stepped in. They did not have a monopoly on the market, though. The ethical pharmaceutical industry, those firms that advertised for the most part directly to health professionals, sold their share of nostrums as well.

Quacks developed successful marketing techniques, but they also promoted their interests in more surreptitious ways. For example, they subdued any curiosity in the press with their economic strength. By the 1890s, patent medicine manufacturers used so-called "red clauses" in the their advertising contracts with newspapers and magazines. These muzzle clauses voided the contract if a state law regulating nostrums were passed. Thus, not only were many editorials silent on the need for such laws, they actively campaigned against them.

But quacks and their trade associations were not able to stifle the entire fourth estate. A few muckraking journalists helped expose the red clauses, the false testimonials, the nostrums laden with harmful ingredients, the unfounded cures for cancer, tuberculosis, syphilis, narcotic addiction, and a host of other serious as well as self-limited diseases. The most influential work in this genre was the series by Samuel Hopkins Adams that appeared in Collier's on October 7, 1905, entitled "The Great American Fraud." Adams published ten articles in the series, which concluded in February 1906; he followed it up with another series on doctors who advertised fake clinics. The shocking stories of the patent medicine menace were accompanied by startling images, such as "Death's Laboratory."

That same month saw the publication of another work which, more than any other single event, spurred on passage of the 1906 act. Socialist writer Upton Sinclair published The Jungle, a fact-based novel about immigrant life in the meat-packing industry of Chicago. Sinclair's shocking and revolting story, verified by government undercover investigators, primed the final push for a federal law.

The first federal Food and Drugs Act was passed four months later. The exposés of muckrakers like Adams and Sinclair had a major impact on passage of the bill, as did the untiring work of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, state food and drug officials, the American Medical Association, and the American Pharmaceutical Association. Most notable among the reformers was the head of the Bureau of Chemistry of the U. S. Department of Agriculture, Harvey Washington Wiley, who stumped for remedial legislation since his arrival in Washington in 1883 (though Wiley was much more concerned with food supply). The law prohibited adulteration and misbranding of food and drugs, and though it had many shortcomings, it was arguably the pinnacle of Progressive Era legislation. It did not put quackery out of business; that still thrives. But it brought some disclosure and accountability into the marketplace, an important first step in consumer protection.

{JR:  Well we agree on one thing, people will have to wake up if we want to keep our republic. As far as the FDA is concerned, we’ll have to disagree on its worth. If I were dictator, and I don’t think that I’m any better than anyone else, and I’d probably do pretty badly at running everyone else’s life, based on my own track record, I’d end the supposed war on drugs, empty the prisons of non-violent offenders, reduce the FDA to an advisory role with the exception of fraud. Libertarians believe that fraud is violence (i.e., theft). So you would not be permitted to put salt in a sugar box and sell it with impunity. I would then CLOSE the courthouse to suits for adverse drug impacts. People, that used drugs, would then be at their own risk. They are anyway since we have ample evidence that an FDA recommendation, even after years of testing and approvals, still winds up with people killed.  So you could then only sue drug makers for their promises. The FDA could then be used as an arbiter of scientific fact. Yes, judge, the drug does cure cancer. No judge, this drug doesn’t make you thin, smart, and blue eyed. Judge, Maybe, we don’t know. Short of that, I’d say that the FDA is a symptom of socialism that’s killing us and making us stupid. People have to be responsible for their own health. They are anyway. }

John,

Can you tell me if there's a MC alumni group in the Nashville, TN area?

Derek95: Not that I am aware of. But, if any of the Jottings readers know, this message will bring them out next week. If there isn't, you can find Nashville Jaspers using the mcALUMdb. John68

John:

A couple of years ago, we heard from a guy who ran his own book publishing firm.

He offered to personally consider any work from Manhattan alumni. I think he had an Irish sounding name, and for some reason Green was either in his name or in the name of the business.  I am not sure.

This is awfully vague, but do you recall, and do you have any way of tracking and pulling the info up for me. I have a manuscript that I think would be a good children's illustrated book.

And, I would like to give him a shot if you can somehow provide the info.

I do not have a Manhattan alumni directory either. Perhaps, since as I remember they cross list for industry, it might be in there as well.

If you have no way to go on this, don't fret over it. I realize it is all a stretch but I thought I would try.

Thanks,
Bill McGuire (Manhattan A, 65)

I found this as a result of a really quick search in jasperjottings20030316.htm

That’s all I see. I know several self-publishing resources – Author House and Lulu – appear NOT to be scams. IMHO, john68

{JR:  The only reason I know this is I think each of us has an affirmative duty not to leave the world without leaving our knowledge behind. At the very least, if I can’t write like James Patterson, then I was thinking of creating the “Jasper Jottings” book. Prune it into something neat. Even if I only print a single volume, maybe someday someone will look at it. :-(  Egotistical, yup. But each of us rages against the dying of the light in our own way. }

Go support "our" teams. I'd appreciate any reports or photos. What else do us old alums have to do? Right, encourage the young ones to max their achievement to 100% potential. I don’t think you have to win or die. Just give us it all and we should applaud. What better things do you have to do today, but to go to some strange place, support the team, dress up “funny”, and cheer for “our” athletes. So what if they think you’re a loon. You’re their loon. You are a loon. You never know what kind of difference you’ll make! Go to one of the women’s events and meet hot chicks! Or if your persuasion is different, got to the men’s events and meet hot guys. Besides no one ever reads the boilerplate, eula, or the fine print.

LATE RUN POWERS PROVIDENCE PAST MEN'S LACROSSE, 8-4

Providence, R.I. (April 19, 2006)—It was a critical game for positioning within the MAAC standings and both teams were playing like it, as Manhattan Men's Lacrosse found itself in a back-and-forth affair with Providence through 44 minutes. With his team clinging to a thin 5-4 lead late in the third quarter, Providence's Henry Pynchon stepped up and put some separation between the two clubs en route to an 8-4 Providence victory.

BASEBALL'S BATS BUST UP LEHIGH, AS FITZPATRICK BECOMES MANHATTAN'S NEW HOME RUN KING IN 9-3 WIN

Riverdale, N.Y. (April 19, 2006)--The legendary Earl Weaver once said that the three keys to victory in baseball are pitching, defense, and the three-run homer. Well, senior designated hitter John Fitzpatrick wasted no time in making sure the Jaspers would get at least one of the three in the first inning by blasting a three-run bomb to dead center field to give Manhattan an early lead over Lehigh en route to a 9-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Van Cortlandt Park. With the homer, which traveled an estimated 430 feet, Fitzpatrick not only gave his a three-run lead, but it also made him Manhattan's all-time home run king with 22.

SPRINGFIELD CARDINALS »
Parisi, Gorecki lift Springfield to win
NEWS-LEADER STAFF

This time, Mike Parisi made sure to keep his focus in the face of adversity.

The right-hander retired 18 consecutive batters after an ominous beginning and Reid Gorecki continued his hitting binge with three more extra-base hits as the Springfield Cardinals dumped the Tulsa Drillers 8-3 on Saturday night in Tulsa, Okla.

The victory was Springfield's fourth in the five-game series and has the Cardinals (6-3) riding plenty of momentum into their 10-game homestand that begins at 4:10 p.m. today against the 1-8 Wichita Wranglers.

Iker Franco's two-run double in the third inning off Ubaldo Jimenez (0-1) broke a 3-3 tie. Gorecki swatted two doubles and popped a solo homer, his fourth of the series, to extend his hitting streak to six games and raise his batting average to .400.

Matt Dryer also hit a two-run double and solo homer. The two home runs Saturday gave the Cardinals 14 in the series, and 17 so far this season.

But the star was Parisi, who earned his first career Double-A victory. The right-hander, a ninth-round pick out of Manhattan College in the 2004 draft, worked 6 1/3 innings and struck out nine to match a franchise record, recovering well from a shaky first inning.

Parisi, who was pulled last Sunday after 3 2/3 innings against Arkansas, ran into trouble right off the bat Saturday, surrendering a two-run double to Ian Stewart and a run-scoring single to Joe Koshansky, wiping out the Cardinals' early 3-0 advantage.

However, Parisi responded by carving through the Drillers' lineup from there and didn't allow a baserunner until Jud Thigpen drew a one-out walk in the seventh. At one point, Parisi struck out five in a row, and his nine strikeouts matched a franchise record set last July 7 by Chris Lambert against Tulsa.

Jimenez, ranked No. 5 among Colorado Rockies prospects, was tagged for 10 hits and six runs, all earned, in 4 2/3 innings. Franco's key double came on the heels of Matt Dryer drawing a two-out walk and Jarrett Hoffpauir singling to right field.

Article published Apr 15, 2006Small-town Torsell sets sight on big city

TIM CREASON Tribune Correspondent

NORTH JUDSON -- Talk about culture shock.

Diane Torsell says she is looking forward to it. In fact, she can't wait.

The small-town sprinter from North Judson High School is heading for the fast lane of New York City.

Torsell, a three-time Indiana state finalist in the 100- and 200-meter dash, is set to attend Manhattan College on a track scholarship.

"I want to compete D-I (NCAA Division I) in college and I wanted to go someplace with a lot of arts and cultural opportunities. New York is like the Mecca for that," says Torsell, a senior who owns just about every Bluejay record in the sprint events.Manhattan is a member of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, a collection of East Coast colleges including Niagara, Marist, Iona and Loyola (Md.) among others.

The Jaspers also compete in the ECAC.

"I asked Diane if she really wants to go live in a city that large, and she's all excited to do it," says North Judson coach John Hampton. "Manhattan flew her out for a visit and showed her a great time. I think it was pretty much settled after that."

Though inquiries arrived from colleges all over the country, Torsell's sights were set on the East Coast right from the start.

Rhode Island was on her final list. Coastal Carolina was in the mix, as well. But one trip to Manhattan and the decision process was over.

"I'm interested in journalism and New York is the place to be for that," Torsell says.

Before she leaves the Hoosier farmland, Torsell hopes to make a fourth trip to state and win a better medal than the one she got last year, when she finished ninth in the 100.

"All I'm saying is that I want to get back to state," says Torsell. "I'm not going to jinx myself and make any predictions, but sure, I've dreamed about what it would be like to get up high on the (awards) stand."

Uncharacteristically, Torsell is off to a slow start this season, at least by her standards. In a dual meet Monday at Winamac, she easily won the 100 in :13.3 seconds, the 200 in :28.0 and 400 in 1:04.5 ... all slower times than she is used to.For instance, she ran :12.56 in the 100 last year at state.

"She's not where she was last season at this time, but that's all right. She may have peaked a little early last season," says Hampton. "She'll be there when it matters."

Torsell and Hampton both admit North Judson's schedule -- which consists mostly of dual meets against other small schools -- doesn't really help her state finals preparation. And it certainly hasn't helped her statewide exposure.

Despite three previous trips to the IHSAA finals, it seems as if few track fans outside of Starke or Pulaski Counties have heard of her.

"That's OK. I know I have to push myself hard if I want to get faster. I wish I could run races against the girls in South Bend or Elkhart, but I can't, so I'm not going to worry about it," says Torsell. "I just run with our boys team in practice and try to beat them."

The federal government grows each year. Taxes rise and regulations pile higher -- and our quality of life suffers. Bristling with data and drama, Size Matters warns of big government's measurable negative impact on the lives of ordinary Americans. The book argues that excessive government reduces family income, drives up the cost of housing and health care, hurts employment, and stifles vital marketplace creativity and innovation. Please join us for a discussion of how the federal government impedes the pursuit of happiness with the author, Joel Miller, and award-winning journalist Jonathan Rauch.

***End Quote***

Well, we have seen that when the “small government” republicans wrested control from the “tax and spend” democrats, we were rewarded with a federal government that is busting at the seams. Fooled you? Not me. I told you there was no difference. It’s like arguing over “less filling / tastes great”. Nothing is going to change in the swamp of Washington DC. When you all wake up to the Ponzi scheme that is being perpetrated on you, maybe then you’ll try a third party like the Libertarians. Go over to http://freetalklive.com and listen to some of the outrages. Listen to the boys eviscerate the “Fair Tax”, the Drug “war”, all the nonsense that the government is trying to do, and the abuses of our government police. I like the CIC’s blog about the need for “separation”. Separation of the School and State. Separation of Money and the State. Separation of Medicine and the State. Just think. It’s like the Post Office teaching children, minting money, and curing you of disease. Dumb, broke, and dead. Call me when you get a clue!
