Manhattan honored its top players from the first 100 seasons of Jasper basketball, but you’d never know it. There’s no list on any internet sites. Is it a secret? Classified by Homeland Security? I was interested in Dearie and Slattery who I watch play when I was but a wee lad! Maybe I should volunteer to build them a page?

Exhortation

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/news/archives/2006/03/01/the_pizza_popes_utopia.html

<extraneous deleted>

The US entrepreneur who made $1bn after founding the Domino Pizza chain is a man with a utopian vision.

Tom Monaghan - nicknamed the pizza pope by the media - has a £230m plan to build the first town in the US to be run according to strict Catholic principles.

The idea is to create a community for 35,000 people - including 5,000 students at a new university - in which, for example, cable television is controlled so there is no pornography, and there are no places where an abortion can be carried out.

The Catholic philanthropist said pharmacies in the town would not sell contraception because their owners would be able to put conditions in lease agreements.

The town - which has the rather inspired name of Ave Maria - is in the earliest stages of construction. It lies on the edge of the Everglades in farmland 90 miles north-west of Miami, Florida, and a ground-breaking ceremony was held last month.

<extraneous deleted>

Now that is putting your money where your mouth is. I’m not sure that “Catholic-land” is the right thing to do. Putting yourself in a ghetto seems to have bad consequences. It probably will run afoul of the established religion here in the US of A –- secular humanism. Further, it will be attacked verbally by all the extremists who seek to impose their beliefs on others. But, it’s a lot like the Free State Project, that I am enamored with – http://freestateproject.org where all the Liberty lovers will move to NH. I heard that the Christians were moving to SC. And we already have blue and red states. So, the further fracturing of civil society seems to be going quite nicely thank you. But, if I ever get to FL, then I plan to visit it and see how it’s implemented.

Reflect well on our alma mater, this week, every week, in any and every way possible, large or small. God bless. "Collector-in-chief" John reinke--AT—jasperjottings.com

Donald King

Donald Francis King, 85, a resident of Valley View Road in West Dover died Friday, Feb. 24, 2006, at his home.

Born in New York City on March 26, 1920, he was the son of the late Peter and Margaret [Griffin] King.

He was raised in New York City, attended schools there and was a graduate of John Adams High School.

He enjoyed sports throughout his life, everything from ice-skating to bowling to baseball to basketball to track. Whenever any sport was mentioned he jokingly claimed to be "the best ever to come out of Woodhaven."

This part of Queens was close to Brooklyn and he fondly remembered catching many a game at Ebbets Field. He was asked to play basketball at St. John's University but he decided he would rather work than go to college. He remained, however, a lifelong learner and reader, a curious and compassionate conversationalist and listener.

He was a devout Catholic.

He met his wife, Mary while working at Chubb Insurance Company in Manhattan. His sister Peggy asked her buddy Mary at Chubb if she would write to her brother in the service. His father had at first hidden his draft notice for World War II "because he already had one son fighting for Johnny Bull."

His mother reluctantly let him go and his father suggested he join the Navy so he'd at least have a warm, dry place to sleep. When he visited his daughter in Boston, he would reminisce about his classes there learning to become a radioman and how Ella Fitzgerald bought him and his sailor buddies a round of drinks in Boston's Scollay Square.

In the Pacific, his destroyer the Thatcher was hit by a kamikaze plane causing burns to his hands. He was the recipient of the Purple Heart Award for his injuries. He relied on his friends to feed him while he healed. Months later, he watched a second kamikaze approach his ship only to fly his plane into the ocean and he theorized the pilot decided not to go through with it and he prayed for that man every night of his life.

Mr. King and his wife started to fall in love through their letters and when he came home they'd walk through Inwood Park at night. They married on Sept. 14,1946, in Manhattan.

His wife's father, a New York City police lieutenant, suggested police work would be a good steady job for his future son-in-law, so he joined the force. He walked a beat for awhile and was once bribed with a chicken on the lower East Side if he would forego writing a ticket to a merchant who had run a red light. He was so amused he let the guy go. He switched to desk duty after a time because of pressures that beat cops were under at the time and his priority was spending time with his family.

He coached his three boys and numerous others in New York and Sayerville, N.J. He was criticized for playing all of the boys when games were lost but he continued to coach as he saw fit since it was, after all, little league. The family moved back to New York because residency was a requirement for policemen at the time and he continued to be involved with youth and sports.

He was the first president of the Men's Club of Good Shepherd Church and school in Inwood and decided to start "gym night," rotating the supervision of teenagers at the gym with other fathers in the neighborhood.

He enjoyed youth and knew most of the kids in the neighborhood by name, connecting with them because he genuinely liked teenagers.

He did not approve of the Vietnam War and was thankful that his three sons did not have to go. Though this was considered unpatriotic he most sincerely loved his country.

He enjoyed watching his sons play sports at Iona, Dominican and Syracuse. Upon retiring from the police force he worked for the Internal Revenue Service where he considered himself more of a social worker than anything else, much as he had when he was a policeman.

He ended his career as a security guard in the computer center at Manhattan College where he would "help the kids with their computer problems."

His wife had a stroke in 1992, which left her paralyzed on one side and unable to speak but still lively and lovely. With determination and good humor she and Mr. King remained active and still communicated and socialized with family and friends.

They greatly enjoyed eating out and still did so, even if it meant they needed the help of their son and his friends to get down their apartment stairs.

They moved to Vermont with their daughter and her family in 1995 and continued their weekly trips out to restaurants with the help of the Moo-ver van and family.

Mr. King once made an appearance at his granddaughter school on "bring your pet" day. Ursula and their other grandchildren were the light of their lives lately, especially when they all gathered at the seashore.

With characteristic resilience, the Kings had made a new life for themselves with new friends in Vermont. He wan avid reader and enjoyed frequenting the Dover Free Library.

He leaves his wife of 59 years, Mary of West Dover; his daughter, Mary Mulford and her husband Russ of Cleveland; his son Donald [Buddy] King and his wife Joan of Steamboat Springs, Colo.; his son Michael King of New York City, N.Y. and his family,; his son Kevin King of Syracuse, N.Y. and his wife, Cathy; his daughter, Judy King of West Dover and her husband, Fred Casey and their daughter Ursula; his daughter Sheila King and her husband Steve Cogger of Topsfield, Mass.; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Bobby King of New York City; and an extended family of McDermotts and Kings.

He was predeceased by a brother Edward King and a sister Peggy King.

The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated on Wednesday at 1 p.m. from Our Lady of Fatima Church with the Rev. Charles Wallen officiating.

Private interment services will take place in the family lot in the West Dover Cemetery.

Friends may call at the COVEY & ALLEN FUNERAL HOME in Wilmington today from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m., when the family will be present. The vigil service will take place today at the funeral home.

Memorial gifts may be made to the Dover Free Library or the Men's Club of Good Shepard, in care of the Covey & Allen Funeral Home, P.O. Box 215, Wilmington, VT 05363.

Subject: A Message to friends of the JKO Foundation

I am very saddened to let everyone know that my mom, Margaret O'Neill, passed away yesterday, less than three months after my Dad's death.  Many of you know that my Mom has been fighting cancer for the past year.  She was so excited to be as healthy as she was last September at our 5th JKO Golf Classic.

Both of my parents were always so appreciative of the support that all of you showed to our family since my brother passed away and the generosity to the Foundation, the golf outings and the scholarship in my brother's name at Manhattan College.  They were both loved very much.

Below is the arrangements for my mom.

Wake – O’Shea Hoey Funeral Home, 29-13 Ditmars Blvd., Astoria, NY 11105.  Thursday and Friday 2pm – 5pm, 7pm – 9pm.

Funeral – Immaculate Conception Church, 29-01 Ditmars Blvd., Astoria.  Saturday 9:45am.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the James Keating O’Neill Foundation, PO Box 5524, Astoria, NY  11105.

Pat

[JR:  Pat, I am sorry to hear that news. I think there is a study linking spouse’s deaths. I have not had my mom pass on yet, but each day I think that day is coming. She, on the other hand, I think, sits around thinking of ways to drive me nuts! Like recently, the 4am phone call announcing that she was going to go for a walk. Or the Sunday night call, asking when I was coming to visit, after I had just left about 90 minutes prior. And, my all time favorite, sharing that she thought it would be a good idea if she went out and found work for me! Yup, I thought you might get a chuckle out of those. And, I am sure that all our fellow Jaspers will add to their prayers: your mom, you, and all those “nearly Jaspers” out there. ]

JASPERS TAKE PART IN A GREAT TRACK AND FIELD TRADITION THIS WEEKEND IN BOSTON

Boston, Mass. (March 3, 2006)--It still remains as clear as crystal in Dan Mecca's mind. As a youngster, Mecca had an opportunity to attend the most prestigious track and field meet in the eastern United States. “I will never forget sitting at the IC4As for the first time and the public address announcer's annual opening words to the meet. He would bellow, ‘This is not just a track meet, this is THE IC4A.'” Mecca understands the tradition that the announcer was referring to, partly because, now as a long-time coach, many of his teams have been a major part the tradition. This weekend, Jasper Track and Field will be taking part in the great traditional meet as the IC4A/ECAC Championships commence in Boston.

The meet, hosted by New York University, was a last chance to qualify for the championships, and several Manhattan seniors competed as if it was their last chance to don the Kelly Green and White, having a career night.

BYLINE: BY SEAN BRENNAN DAILY NEWS SPORTS WRITER

TO GET A FEEL FOR just how intense last night's Iona-Manhattan game was, all you had to do was check out the benches during a timeout in the second half.

On the Iona side, there was Gary Springer, sporting a large bandage over his right eye to cover up his newly acquired gash. Over on the Manhattan side, Mike Konovelchick had his head wrapped to cover a wound, while Kenny Minor was getting his bloody nose worked on by the team trainer.

Many games, especially this time of year, are called wars or heavyweight bouts. This one actually lived up to the hype.

And as has been the case countless times throughout his four-year career, it was Jason Wingate who saved Manhattan's bacon in crunch time.

Wingate, the Jaspers' senior guard, sank four clutch free throws in the final 17.5 seconds as Manhattan rallied from eight points down to knock off Iona, 78-74, in front of a standing-room only crowd at Draddy Gym.

Manhattan (18-9, 14-4 MAAC) scored 18 of the game's last 24 points to win its third MAAC regular-season title in the past four seasons and earn the coveted double-bye into the semifinals of the conference tournament that begins Friday in Albany. Iona (20-7, 13-5), which dropped its first conference road game of the year, will play Saturday night in the quarterfinal round against either Fairfield or defending champion Niagara.

The Gaels could almost taste their first conference title in five seasons when they held a 68-60 lead with 5:37 left. Manhattan already had lost Devon Austin to fouls, and Arturo Dubois and Konovelchick were each barely hanging in with four personals.

But the Jaspers hit back in a hurry. Wingate (16 points) drained a three-pointer to start a 7-0 run that pulled Manhattan within a point. Manhattan eventually tied the game at 70 on a Konovelchick free throw before Wingate converted a layup with 1:57 to play to give the Jaspers the lead for good.

The news got worse for Iona just seven seconds later when leading scorer Steve Burtt was called for a charge and fouled out, taking his game-high 24 points with him to the bench.

Manhattan added a pair of free throws from Jeff Xavier (23 points) before Wingate finished off the win with his four foul shots and Manhattan was off to cut down the championship nets.

"I'm disappointed," Iona coach Jeff Ruland said. "We had a lead and we're a senior team, we're supposed to know how to put the game away and we wind up throwing it (away)."

As for Wingate, Manhattan coach Bobby Gonzalez has seen his clutch act before.

"It was very fitting that Jason Wingate was on the line for those free throws at the end," Gonzalez said. "That kid has just been Mr. Clutch. Senior Day, he's on the line. For him to take us home is fitting."

The New York Post
February 27, 2006 Monday
SECTION: Sports+Late City Final; Pg. 63
HEADLINE: CITY GAME ALIVE AND WELL
BYLINE: MIKE VACCARO

ALL day, all season, they’d waited for this moment, ached for this moment, even in those long, dark stretches when it seemed their season was careening toward the abyss. Somehow, the Manhattan Jaspers never tumbled into that black hole. Somehow, they kept their legs.

Somehow, they had fought their way to this wonderful basketball moment, with the final seconds of the regular season melting off the clock at Draddy Gymnasium, with the MAAC title about to be theirs, with all but a small pocket of the 2,345 witnesses about to hurdle the press tables and gather for one of the great celebrations you’ll ever see.

"One of the great moments of my life," sophomore center Arturo Dubois said, shaking his head, the glee of the moment still quaking his knees, the reality of this splendid 78-74 victory over Iona gently taking hold within his heart.

"It was," Bobby Gonzalez would say, "a great New York day. For one day at least, we were the toughest ticket in town."

And for one remarkable season the Jaspers have been the toughest team in town, the grittiest gaggle of gamers anywhere within the five boroughs. Iona’s got the better talent, especially since the Jaspers lost C.J. Anderson, their best player, over a month ago. Yesterday, the Gaels had a 68-60 lead and they looked primed to flee to the Westchester County line with the No. 1 seed in the MAAC playoffs in hand.

"We’re supposed to put the game away there," was Iona coach Jeff Ruland’s hoarse postgame lament. "Not start throwing the ball off the back of our heads."

More precisely, they shoved the Jaspers one last time to a place with which they’ve grown intimately familiar, a spot where lesser teams wobble and die, where champions refuse to be vanquished. One more time, back the Jaspers came. Mike Konovelchick, wearing a head bandage and looking like a member of the fife-and-drum corps, made the game-tying free throw. Jason Wingate made the tiebreaking lay-up, and four clinching foul shots.

"They’re a blood-and-guts team," said Gonzalez, his whole life a blood-and-guts gym rat who knows the species well.

New York deserved an afternoon like this, in a basketball place like this, one team from the Bronx and one from the ’burbs and a whole bunch of city kids reminding us that just because the Knicks have given up the ghost, just because St. John’s is struggling to qualify for its conference tournament, this is still the greatest city on earth in which to watch the city game.

The basketball cognoscenti might have offered up Storrs, Conn., as the place to be yesterday, where Villanova and Connecticut and their mutual March ambitions collided for what was little more than a glorified exhibition game, since what was at stake at Gampel Pavilion was this: absolutely nothing.

At Draddy, the only thing in play was everything. A double-bye in next week’s MAAC Tournament was on the table, which in a one-bid league is a prize plated in platinum, meaning all the Jaspers need now is two wins to qualify for the NCAA. And even if they don’t get them, winning the regular-season title assures them of an NIT berth.

"We were playing for our season," Kenny Minor said, "and we were playing for the championship of the MAAC."

They were also playing for the informal championship of New York, on the first day in a good long while when that meant something again. All the important New York gadflies were there, beginning with Howard Garfinkel, the old Five-Star guru. Everywhere you turned you saw Riverside Church jackets, and old Gauchos gear, and people with their faces and torsos painted either green-and-white or maroon-and-gold.

"SAFETY SCHOOL!" the Manhattan fans chanted at the Iona cheering section.

"SO ARE YOU!" retorted the invaders from New Rochelle.

A perfect soundtrack on a perfect basketball afternoon in New York City. There’s a good chance these teams will meet again soon, with even more at stake. Somehow, it won’t seem the same. That game would be in Albany, far removed from the city that would know how to treat that match-up right. Too bad.

GRAPHIC: PARTY AT DRADDY: Manhattan College students and players celebrate the Jaspers’ surprising 78-74 victory over Iona last night in Riverdale. Manhattan will have two byes in the league tourney. [Neil Miller]

Curmudgeon's Final Words This Week

May I recommend to you:

http://www.FreeTalkLive.com

Free Talk Live is a Syndicated Talk Radio Show, on-air since 2002. These fellows talk about anything from politics to personal issues. It can get you out of the right / left, democrat / republican or is it democan / repulicrat paradigm.

You might find it interesting to challenge your assumptions. Learn that we are NOT a democracy. Taxes ARE theft. And, to be free, you have to allow others to be free as well.

I find their show interesting. Sometimes, juvenile, but thought provoking. I take away at least one idea from every podcast I listen to.

And that’s the last word.
